Clear. W.3.  Furnace fire went entirely out and coldest morn in house this winter.  W.C. didn't freeze although forgot to "fix" it.  Dr. Dudley calls on measles patient.  Tue did not attend church, but went up for Sunday R.H.  Nobody called mostly clear day with brisk westerly wind becoming S.W. at night. Read Tom Jones till bedtime.  Am nearly through with it.  Tue read it after I retired 9.30

About clear SW3. Hazy.  Am cutting my rations short and think sleep better.  The coal of last Tuesday bout gone.  Grace Sefton called AM.  Her father is very low.  They don't expect him to  get any better.  Harman phones that will be in tomorrow to see about some clover seed he knows of.  Florence Moon called P.M.  She is married and lives at Fort Collins, Col.  She has come E to get her mother Nettie Highland Moon from Janesville to Charleston.  She is paralysed(sic), and they recently got here.  Tue reports that Mort and K will be over, but they didn't come so I nearly finished Tom Jones.  Mostly clear till night SW winds and cloudy with light rain at night.  Gobed 9  R.05

Cloudy.  Wind S. but noon changed to west or NW and grows colder. all day;  work at store  two or three hours AM.  Cleaning up counter and desk.  Baby better and seems pretty lively.  Tue irons a part of the washing which she has done herself.  Brought lap robe down home.  Mostly cloudy day, wind NW.  Gobed 10 PM.

Cloudy wind, North.  Pay Mitchell for Maggie's shoes 1.50 and buy  pair for baby 50c.  Settle with Alan Fisher wood sold him (?) statement wood a/c to C. Mason.  He owes 11.00  2.00 of it being for delivering.  Find my ladder lost over a year ago on roof of City Hall.  All Crass gets it down for me.  Draw off balance of whiskey B,&L. left in Bbl. about 6 gallons in all.  Caylor pays me for 1/3 cd wood by Bob Gileman.  Sold Dr. Hall 1/4 cd.  Mrs. Feagan over at night.  Go bed 10 P.M.  Cloudy NE wind.

Most clear.  NW.2. W.C. again froze up.  We have to thaw out with lantern.  Rhoda came to wash 7.30.  Tue went up to Parker sale at store AM.  Rhoda does other work and stays the dinner.  This the coldest day this winter.  Light westerly wind all day.  Mostly cloudy  PM with snow flurries.  The weather forecasts predict same for several days.  I did not get out much.  The furnace "off" again early and had to work an hour before could build fire.  Ordered cobs Whalens for morn.  Self feel poorly.  Gobed 9.30.

Mostly Clear W.1.  Again trouble with W.C. freezing.  I did not let loose till noon.  Think I can fix it good tonight.  Attic tank ran dry last night.  We borrow lamp lanterns in coal room  might benifit W.C.  Could not see difference: it froze all same.  Load cobs from Whalens came 1.00 cr. per load P.M.  Tue works of PM on R.C.  lesson.  Think have WC fixed so  will stand cold night - will let it run all night.  Part cloudy  day: light SW wind.  Mrs. Fulton called to see  Tue P.M.  Tue got armful of books from library.  One of cold days.  Go bed 9.

Cloudy wind NW.  Baby slept well and think she is  all right.  Don't think she has the whooping cough.  It is very prevalent in town and several children have died from it quite recently.  W.L. Montecue died suddenly at Dr. Steele's office yesterday morning.  Maggie and Phebe got to S.S. in AM. and up to Davis after dinner.  Open Bbl of Baldwin apples, have just finished one of gradings.   Tue went over to Perrills a while toward night.  Called at Mrs. Shaw's she is not much better.  Have been smoking cigar since July 11 and have decided to quit for a while toward night.  Cloudy AM  clears off  and  clear night.  Go bed.  9.30 P.M.

Clear with S. wind.    Girls both go to school.  Mrs. is reported better today.  Get  John Savely to saw up  half cord wood.  Comer up town.  Order him to saw  me 2000 ft.  2 in. plank and 2000 ft. 2.3 and 4 by 5 such as city uses @ .70 on the yard in wood.   Pay him check $100.00  on balance due him.  A. Taylor working  for Winter was  found dead  in his bed this morning.  Jim Perrill  got some more sheeting and ordered 400 ft. 2 in elm plank 14 ft.  Baby had  a severe time with her bowels after supper.  Mostly  clear day, wind southerly.  Go bed 10.30 PM.

Mostly cloudy. S.3.  The house was colder this morn than have noted this winter.  Ther in setting R. 57.   Something wrong with  furnace or the coal.  Rhoda came about 11 AM and washed done before night.  Phebe cutting  out new brown dress.  Harman phoned AM that would be in with some meat P.M. brought 19 3/4 lb lard 8 1/2 sausage, tender loin, spare rib and beef in all 40 lbs. Pay him check 4.80.  He took out old harness he had left in barn.  Fern was here at night.  The snow went off except north hills.  Mostly clear day with strong southerly.

Clear. haze, S.3. Phone J.E. M.  Learn that Jessie Dunn's baby died last night after long illness.  Tue got a letter from Marie AM.  Hitch up mare 11 AM., first since Sunday.  The scaves (sic)of funeral procesh (sic) on E side.  Tue went down to Jessies A.M.  I got same P.M. after make two trips.  Look for JEMc 5 PM  didn't see him.  Meet Rogers Bennett with Zoll.  Ora was here at night.  She is thinking of going with Phebe next week to Chicago.  Clear AM but clouds up PM. with dashes of rain 5 P.M. and later strong southwind(sic) becoming N.W. before morning.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Clear snowfl. (sic) N.W. 3. some light showers early in night.  Harman phones that thinks will finish NW tile today.  They plowed yesterday.  Tue goes to funeral P.M.  Jessie Moffets baby.  Helen Ferrish went with her.  Phebe has friends for supper.  Frances, Ora and Fern and Tue made quit a function of it.  Had a roast of Harman's beef which was fine.  Lear of death of Ike Cassell an old settler from way back.  Mostly clear day with high N.W. wind.  It began to grow colder about noon and we are worried at night for fear W W will freeze.  New WC frozen twice this winter.  Go bed 9 P.M.  I spend much of time sorting over old papers and mags.

The Weather

The weather &c for Jan. 1913.  Average daily mean. 37.1;  Max 60 on 17 and 30.  Min 10 on 12 and 31. Precip. mostly Rain, 5. 91 in .90 on 5th .65 on 6th .60 on 10th 1.00 inch on 16th; 1.41 on 20th and, 83 on 22d an inch or two light snow fell but went off at once.  The Prevailing winds N.5 1/3; N.E. 2/3; E. 1 1/3; S.E. 2; S. 10; S.W. 4; W. 1 2/3, and N.W. 6 days.  The ground has hardly been frozen and they have been plowing this week Cloudiness for Mo, 60%.   Corn say 40.  oats 30.  Hogs 7.00  Eggs 25 butter 30 to 40.  The roads have been very bad and are so still  I have not used roads much.  There has been lots of rain and streams are high.

S.W.3  Have not heard from Geographic since writing them with remittance of 2.00 Dec. 18.  Mail checks P.M.  to Fuller Bros 20.75 Coal  Tucker Bros 3.50 concrete basement.  Gray & Gray shoe bill to date.  Russell and Erwin New Brittain (stamps) for two front door keys.  Tue mailed and stamped  these letters.  I did not go up town.  Tue attends RC at Iknyans P.M.   Ray Bennett levels up stables.  Tue attends church at night with Mrs. Webster.  Fern N and Ora here evening.  I lie on lounge which we moved to dining room last week.  Look over many  old papers &c AM.  Cloudy day with light rain at times (.10) R. strong southerly winds.  The rains yesterday raised branch some.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Mostly clear W. 2.  Rene phoned Tue to come over to Mattoon.  Which she did  on 10 car returning 3.  Phebe ironing.  We got small box of N. Yakima Apples from M & C, from Buddy.  I had a hard tussel with furnace late P.M.  Ray helping.  This coal is very dirty, full of stone.  Bright clear day NW wind I did not get out.  Mort and Kate over at night till nearly 10 oc.

Mostly clear early S.3.  Wh. fr. ice 1/4.  Tue went to church AM.  getting R.H. I wrote two firms for literature on Motor Plows.  Fern and Ora call late P.M. making candy with Phebe.  I had thought of taking drive today but did not feel like hitching up.  The roads are reported very muddy except gravel.  The branch still runs  good stream.  River water muddy.  Cloudy day with strong southerly Part clear at night.  Tue attends church at night.  warm day for winter  Gobed  10 P.M.

Mostly  cloudy W. 6.  Cottingham's man came to put in new grate and finds it a misfit and one piece lacking.  It didnot work well and they will return in morn to remedy it if possible.  Mostly cloudy with high  wind W to NW diminishing late P.M.  Clear at night ~~  Tue got  tickets to show at Opera House at night and took Mrs. Brooks.  Alfred came late P.M. and tinkered round a while.  I did not hitch up.  I read at night with good fire  in grate went to bed before Tue got home.  Gobed. 10.  I did not hitch up nor visit town.

Cloudy and raining lightly.  Fresh S.E. wind.  Was up with Phebe good deal in night.  Baby not well this morning.  C.G.(him) still has slight cold in throat.  Went over to (Dr.) Patton's forenoon says Fan* very bad.  Nobody there.  Tue went down to see Mrs. Nott.  Couldn't go Mrs. Dowling said she would go. I took her down after dinner.  Found Fan very low.  Saw Dr. at night after he had been there.  Didn't  give any encouragement.  Mrs. Davis and Kate Myers were over at night.  Doctor Phebe with fatbacon &c  at night and she was not so bad as usual.  Misty damp.  P.M. roads pretty bad.  gobed 10 P.M.

*Fan is Tue's younger sister.  Fan has three children and had a stillbirth in November 22.  She is 27 years old.

W. 3.  Rhoda washes A.M.  Tue puts up a box of peas to send Buddy.  Quite a thunder show last night between 8 and 9 oc.  Rhoda  washes and works till noon.  Mrs. Galbreath did not come as promised.  Tue sends Buddy (and writes to her at night) another box of peas also another  package ~  I did not  hitch up nor go up town.  Helen Ferrish called an hour or two P.M.  Tue up town later.  Muggs down to Lelas at night.  Mostly cloudy with strong N. W. wind.  Go bed 10.

Cloudy.  N.W. 3  Fullers deliver 5 tons coal A.M.  He got stuck at coming  in from back St.  Rhoda ironed P.M.  Muggs and Tue busy getting ready to start for Jeff. City next Monday morn.  Didn't hitch up - too cold at night.  Mostly clear day, strong northerly winds.  Read a while  in Chamber at night.  Go bed 8.30

N.1.  heavy white frost. ice 3/8 in tub.  Coldest morn to date and get good fire in furnace by 8 AM.   Harman phones AM.  Ss will finish 30 a piece tomorrow.  had intended  going out but too cold.  Tue  and Muggs busy sewing &c.  Muggs has  party at night Grace, Dora, Hat, Johnston and others - cards.  Tue sells old cook stove and gets new Majestic range which they put up late evening.  Get 1/2 gal a varnish for furnace.  I drove out to Huffmans late P.M.  Clear day light variable winds.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Cloudy N.3. Maggie finished painting the  radiators today.  I did not hitch up nor go to town.  I let mare in pasture P.M.  Tue attends R.C. at A. Alexander.  She is talking of giving up the R.C.  Grace was here to supper and Muggs went home with her.  Cottingham has not appeared to do work on W.C.s and furnace.  Much cloudy day strong northerly wind.  Gobed 9

Clear.  N.W.2.  White Frost.  Thin ice - Tub.  Alfred worked hour or two AM fix celery and carrots.  Harman with Paul bring 6 bales hay 2.88 2 bu oats 50 and 1 bu corn  my half .20  Was about out.  I drove E. + S. of town say 4 P.M.  The roads good, little mud.  Maggie gets letter from Mo Library accepting her offer of 85 per if she will come at once or by middle of month.  She has not yet decided to go.  Tue spent evening at Dr. Brook's, Maggie out till 9 mostly clear clouding at times sp rain 4 P.M.  strong northerly wind, clear night and freezing by 8 P.M. gob 9

Mc early for "same".  I work cleaning up old furnace flue door to have in needed.  Hitch up late; go get glass 14 x 28 for coal window ordered Monday.  Try the painting in W.C. again doing better.  Grace Sefton here to supper. Her father is getting no better.  Mostly clear day, light variable winds.  I got jug of Monarch ordered this morn.  Gobed 9.30

Cloudy and raining began perhaps after midnight .06 to 7 A.M.  wind N.W.3  Tue and I had intended to go to Loxa early but light rain most of A.M. prevents.  Tue went  Loxa 3.45 car collecting West's rent and seeing Alva Armstrong about plastering.  I hitch up 4 P.M. and drive to lumber yard.  Have decided to put strip in W.C. and begin it at once.  Frank Balch cleans off of furnace and  adjusts doors- putties up all cracks.  Paid 2.00 ch  Helen calls at night.  I take mare to Nickles.  Mostly cloudy day with strong northerly wind.  Sprinkles rain occasionally AM and after dark clears off late at night.  Muggs out with Dora A getting home after we retire.  The rain amounted to .10 altogether barely laying the dust.  Gobed 9.30

N.W.1. heavy white frost.  Rhoda washed A.M.  I put up strip in W.C. doing a poor job get can flat white at Briggs cr. 50 cts. and begin putting it on.  Think will have to quit trying to do anything.  Tue working hard all day mopping &c,  I  felt very poorly and think overworked this morning.  Gus and George brought some eggs &~  Clear day with light northerly wind,  Mare in pasture.  Gobed 9.30

Mostly clear red at sunrise E. 2.  Light white frost.  Tue and Muggs went to church AM.  Muggs got  Sunday paper- Interocean.  Was too late for R.H.  After they left I  drove south to Woodson place returning by Wrightsville about 1 P.M.  the roads are good most of the  trees hold their green leaves especially the oaks, Hickory walnut and some other trees  have shed.  I met but one auto in twelve mile drive today.  Toward night I drove over to Frank Balch's.  Will call to look at work tomorrow.  Mostly clear with moderate S.E. to south winds.  C.O. Rennells has not appeared to finish painting on W.C. and we will get other man.  Gobed 10.30

Part cloudy S.2.  Take quarter R2ps  back to  BPa & Co.  The shortage in coal still continues and they have no coal but Pana.  Order on glass for  coal room window 14x28.  Didn't find strip for W.C. to suit.  Our painter has never appeared.  think he "doped" the paint left as it refuses to dry.  Frank Balch looks at furnace and will clean and put it up tomorrow for two dollars.  Harman and family in town in Surry.  Hitches team in barn.  Mrs. Bell takes 1 1/2 bu pears.  Tue and Maggie to function at  Pres. Church toward night and later.  I drove east after 4 P.M. return 5.30.  Part cloudy with fresh southerly winds.   Clouds W. at sunset.  Quite warm day and in night.  Tue was over at LeRoy's night.  Go bed 8.30 P.M.

Clear N.W.  Drove to Frank Blach's to get him to clean up furnace &c.  Not at home.  Tue sweeping and cleaning up.  We are needing painter and plumber.  I try to build hot fire in furnace.  I say I can't burn that Pana coal in it and keep house from freezing.  Helen called and she with Muggs and Tue left for town leaving me to handle Alfred.  He came about dark to do chores.  Pay him 30 cts which is 30c. more than he has earned.  Clear day  moderate northerly winds.  I met John Glassco  up town.  He does not wish to buy Perkins lot.  Bel Scott called P.M.  Bill Decker wants to saw off the timber.  Gobed 8.30

Clear, NW.3.  I grate ear corn making some good pancakes.  This is nearest frost since spring.  Think my trouble becoming chronic.  Not much change in rheumatics or bowels.  My appetite pretty good, but am afraid to eat all I want.  The "Country Gent" subscription has expired.  I may not renew it.  Tue went up town with Mrs. Curd P.M.  Alfred carries up coal &c. we kept a little fire in furnace all day.  Chimney choked up.  I drove SW late P.M. to Kickapoo and take mare to Nickles.  Clear day fresh northerly wind variable toward night.  Tue feels badly and got meddy  of Dr. Starr P.M.  Gobed 9 P.    Mare to Nickles

Cloudy and raining.  N.2.  The rain (.63) began 4 A.M. with thunder.  Light rain much of the day wind becoming southerly with heavy rains (1.05) at night 1.68 inches in all.  Tue's company came The party consisted of Miss T. Moore of Col.,  Mrs. J.E. Curd,  Mrs. LeRoy, Hat and Mrs. Mrs. W. A. Campbell.  I did not drive them was at barn repairing old buggy.  I did not hitch up.  H.G. came for Hat at 5 P.M.  Cottingham called A.M. looks over our plans for W.C. and makes some good suggestions.  His man puts door on furnace P.M. also repairs smoke flu.  The pieces for grate have not come.  Cloudy day with heavy rains dark till say 10 P.M.  Gobed 9.  Tue got letters from Mugs and Bud.

Clear.  N.E.2  We are pasturing all neighbor chickens.  It is too cold without fire.  We have to stand it.  Saw Cottingham again AM.  Says furnace repairs shipped and likely to reach us any time.  We can't have fire in furnace until they come.  Tue ironing AM.  She attends concert at church with Mrs. Card at night.  Mostly clear day With moderate northerly wind.  I drive after 4 P.M.  going out out by Latta's and on past Slab and home by Helen's.  They are putting in concrete bridge S. of Noble place.  Think they have finished grading at Cassell near Big Four  R.R.  They have done good job.  Got home before dark.  All roads are good; becoming dusty.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Clear.  Emmett came 7.  We set him to mowing yard., which he finished 2 P.M.  and worked at clearing up furnace room most of P.M.  broke pipe.  Picked apples in bottom later 2 bushels:  will come in morn.   Mrs. Grove over P.M.  Tue ironed an hour or two.  I drove  up town AM.  Got letter from Kate with two dollars for Frank which I took over to  him AM.  The authorities released them last Friday.  Stella was to be married last Saturday one of our  most oppressive days.  My rheumatism and the heat has held me down pretty close.  Go bed  8.15

Mostly clear, SW.2  Nick Smith over yesterday.  He has quit  the Dole House of present.  My Rheumatism appear to be getting worse.  We will have to get new grate to our furnace before setting it up.  Kate's Libbie came over from Mattoon on 11 car.  I took her with provisions, which she brought, over to Frank Balch's where they  had daughter die last week of scarlet fever.  Another is not expected to live.  Buddy and  Chas. arrive from Mt.C about noon for visit.  Phebe is getting ready to go to Chicago tomorrow morning.  Alfred finishes yard A.M.  Much cloudy day with severial (sic)  PM,  Mort and Kate over at night.  The rain to 6 P.M.  measured .22 in.  Go bed 9.30  Buy 29oz chick of Ray Smith.

Cloudy S.1.  Alfred Smith came  mowing on yard till rain stopped him.  It rained much of AM pretty heavy at times with heavy thunder (.65) I  decided not to come up till about noon.  Tue got letter from Buddy.  She has decided not to come up.  I met Parker up town, says P. +P. worked about 3 hours at Loxa AM.  Bill Scott calls for fence Catalogue.  I drove to town P.M. and SW but cut short trip afc (sic)  thunder storm.  Get breeching at Frommel's.  Heavy rain about sunset with much thunder (.55)  All electric lights out till about 10 P.M.  Tue and girls ironing AM and sewing P.M.  Phebe is going to Chicago soon.  My rheuatiz has settled down to bad all time.  The furnace still down.  Gobed 9.  Take mare to Nickles

Monday, 5.30 AM.  Ther.  46.  74.  64.  =61 1/3

Clear N.E.1.  Shriver comes AM.  looks over roof  and gutters and will fix it today or tomorrow.  Old mare did not come up early.  I "hunt Harvey" again finding him down at  Elevator.  Says has got an engineer now and "thinks" can put up furnace at once.  I eat early dinner and start Loxa 1.30  Jack dog went having fit near Defenbaughs.  Went and return by Loxa.  Saw May and Retha at long range  P & P having finished splicing their posts will rest up a day or two.  Did not see nor hear from Harman or Burge.  Threshing at E. Smith's.  I shall start home say 5 P.M.  spr. rain all the way but does not lay dust.  I take mare to Nickles.  Mostly cloudy E.11.  Gobed 9.30

Clear, N.E.  We need furnace this weather, but no signs of getting it.  I drove over to Parkers AM.  Wants me to go out Monday, have decided to tear down the old shop in Loxa.    I hunt for Harvey every chance I get.  Today ends the Chautauqua for this year.   It has been pretty good weather.  Maggie got home 7 P.M.  she has been away since Jany 12 last.  Have fire in grate all day.  Mostly clear, light N.E. wind.  Mare at home.  Gobed 9.30
