3.  Wednesday  5.30 AM.  Ther.  27.  55.  44.

Clear.   S.W. wind Very heavy frost.  The finest hard one in town.  Wrote Dorsey for bbl quinces wrote letter to Aunts Fair Mate and Helen about Ma started down there about 8 AM. staying till marly night.  (?) home by Uncle John's  but didn't see him round Ma very low but likely to live several days perhaps.  Bim came there before we left.  We left the baby home with Maggie and  Grandpa.  Gobed 9 P.M.

4.  Thursday.  5.30 AM.  Ther. 45.  65.  55.

Partly cloudy and looks like rain but cleared off strong S. wind statted for woods at 8 AM.  Five men at work and Warren Decker hauling rails.  Light rain about 3 P.M. and some thunder the boys have got the land about clear of logs and brush.  Have decided not to put in wheat it has got to late.  Gather lot of butternuts and persimmons on way home.  Buy saddle at Skidmore's this morning on cr. $9.25 with briddle.  Mostly cloudy afternoon.  Gobed 9.30 P.M.  Tue ironed today.

5.  Friday. 6 AM.  Ther.  58.  58.  57.

Cloudy and much like rain. dics K pays rent for Sept.  Winters tells me Cooper not very good pay.  He owes me for 8 cords of wood.  Uncle John was in at 10 AM.  Ma died at 7 this morning.  Took Tue out there after dinner.  Bim was in to dinner.  Hat came down Uncle John went down to Sniders and I didn't see  him any more.  It began to rain about 11 AM and continued nearly all day.  I got home at  about 7 P.M.  The roads are very heavy Gobed 9 PM with baby.

6.  Saturday.  5.30 AM.  Ther. 53.  64.  55.

Cloudy, no rain in night.  Baby slept better than usual  Met Uncle John up town.  He says any deal (?) dies this morning at 7 oc.  It began to rain before noon.  After dinner I took Tue down to Bert's going by Harman's and (?) by stage road.  Rained slowly most of PM.  I got home at 7 PM.  Tue stayed down at Bert's.  Baby slept well with me.  Dark foggy night  Gobed 8.30 PM.    Got started to Bert's about 8.30   Roads very heavy got there at 10.30.  Mr. Swain preached funeral sermon.  Snider overtakes me on road we got to Cemetery at about 12.30.  They bury her at lot with Fan.  Rene and Hat  (?)  Hen went home with us and ate dinner.  Clears off toward night .  Gobed 9 P.M.

Cloudy S.E.2.  Tue irons much of forenoon.  "Barley" Elkins calls for Ellens trunk P.M.  the family has returned from Kentucky and ll are at Bushton.  Harman phones about some hinges which he thinks he needs.  Says will be in town Wednesday and will bring me some feed.  It began light rain or mist about noon and continues all day.  Wind S to SW3 not much water fell say .05 in.  Am reading Wilkie Collins Woman in White.  Gobed 9 P.M.  

11.  Tuesday  6.30 AM.  Ther.. 32.30.22.= 28.

Cloudy. N.3. growing colder.  Tue repairing new dress.  She attended function at Fullers with Mrs. Brooks P.M.  Fern Nichols here at night.  Tue helping her about dress.  She is going to Indianapolis tomorrow to work the season.  Cold day with northerly wind.  The ground pretty well covered with the snow that fell night of 2d inst. Part cloudy.  Go bed 9. P.M.

Partly clear, wind N.E.  baby cried some in night with colic

not feeling well this morning.  Tue went over to

Curt Davis to baby's funeral in forenoon.  Maggie and Phebe came from

school about 10 AM.  Snider called about noon.  Mostly cloudy day

with N. or NE wind.  Quit tobacco again at night have been chewing good

 deal since Sunday.  Gobed 10.30 P.M.

11.  Saturday.  6.30 AM.  Ther 16. 32.  16.

Cloudy.  wind N. or N.E. Tue got up and made fire this morning.  Tue got a letter from Aunt Mate saying they could not come out here.  Uncle John was down at noon but did not eat dinner, H. Hildreth paid balance of fine to me $2.50.  Comer was was up, pay him 25.00  He thinks I owe him a few more dollars than my a/c shows.  Maggie went up town with me toward night.  Took yellow cat to Wrights.  Buy Coffee, nutmeg, lard.  got three reserved seat tickets for McGiberry Show which will be here Monday  night.  Has been a pretty clear day with N. wind.  Go bed 10 PM

January 25-28, 1888 in Charleston, Illinois

25.  Wednesday.  6.30 AM.  Ther  30.  36.  10.
Cloudy.  Wind SW. light snow flying Maggie and Phebe both went to school.  Phebe has not been since 9th  inst. Pay off men for piling ties yesterday $4.30.  Comer up and working at ties, am going to let him finish them.  Ed Eastin pays me balance on note.  12.30 releasing mortgage on lot. Cleared off before noon: wind W.  Tue  got letter from Aunt Mate.  Went down to tie pile after dinner.  Strong wind from N.W.  Snow melting fast.  Pay winter bal 13.36 Recketts 15.00 both in full.  Caught more cold and laid up at nights with sore throat.  Maggie has very bad cough.  Turns colder toward night.  Gobed.  10 P.M.

26  Thursday.  7 AM  ther 2.  22. 20.
Clear NW.  Maggie and Phebe don't go to school.  My throat some better this morning.  Worst cold I have had for two years.  Sell Ike Hughes half cord of wood.  Somebody hauled load of new posts to yard 52. probably Riley Eastin.  Comer finished stacking ties.  I have been out $6.50 on this job.  Recketts took clock up to shop and repaired case.  Bought Gelatin and glycerin.. N. Main returned borrowed book by Sexhres.  Hat was down toward night.  Pleasant day get chilly with westerly wind.  Maggie and Phebe both have bad colds.  Gobed 10PM~~


January Paid McKee1.25 and Sandy .45 for Comer for work done yesterday.

27.  Friday.  6.30 AM.  Ther 14.  29.  26.
Nearly clear.  Wind North.  Undertake to make a copying pad but fail.  Tue sewing on dark dress for her mother.  Maggie and Phebe still remain from school   their colds not being any better.  Went down to switch ties and put Comer's on each pile according Bruner's instruction.  Tue writes a letter to Aunt Mate at night.  Has been pleasant day,  clear with chilly north wind.  Gobed 11 PM

28.  Saturday  7 AM.  Ther.  14.  32.  24.
Nearly clear.  Wind easterly.  Baby cried good deal in night and coughed like croup.  R.R. Browne of Helena, Ark in town   A.Bunk pd. a/c in full $1.65.  Uncle in and down to dinner. seems to think Snider biz. in pretty bad shape.  Comer in before noon.  The R.R. man did not receive ties up again Monday.  Bought  1 lb coffee at Vansickles.  Sold  half cord of wood to C. Mason Cr.    Total eclipse of moon in evening.  The roads are still good and lots of wood coming in.  Gobed.  10 PM  Pay Riley Eastin for 105 posts $3.25.
