Cloudy.  N.W.3.  Raining.  It began probably after midnight.  Tue got letter from Muggs.  It rained light  much of AM.  I did not hitch up.  Nobody called.  It grows colder and snow flies for two or three hours in afternoon.  Toward night I covered our beans and a few of the tomatoes.  Tue went up town toward night getting some grub.  Cloudy day with N. to W. high wind and light rain or snow most of time.  Gobed 9.  Clear at night.

Part cloudy N.W.3.  The first frost here.  Ice 1/8 in.  Miller came and went to BPA & Co. ordering flooring and glass for repairs at Loxa which he will do tomorrow.  Hatton came and began again at wood pile.  We spent an hour trying to fix furnace grate: he took out the ashes.  They read E. Meter today first for two months.  Rhoda came 10 AM washes &c. staying  to dinner, and working a while P.M.  I hitch up 4 P. and get boxing set in  (Sibert cr.) rear buggy wheels  Billy worked all day and will come tomorrow.  Tue up at library till after 9  Part cloudy light N to easterly winds Gob 9.

left in heavy shower leaving me alone with Jack.  She got home on 4.30 car.   Loxa  phones that glass for door a misfit and will have get other.  Rene phones she didn't go to party on account of rain.  It began regular rain 9 AM continuing all day and into night.  Got letter from Phebe.  Says will be here Thursday.  Cloudy rainy day.  The sun shone once 8 AM.  When thought of hitching up but didn't.  Gobed 9 P.M.  still raining

N.2.  Light rain till after 6 A.M.   This measured in with yesterday except  morn 1.88 in.  See yest.  Miller called says patched floor at Loxa house yest. working 8 h.  He can't account for his mistake in morning glass.  Hitch up 11 AM and get "same" ord yet T.W.P.  Phebe came 1 P.M.  Later she and Tue  went up to courthouse and she got her decree of divorce from Tom and alimony.  Phebe presents me with victrola No. IV which I fool with  till midnight.  Phebe and Tue went to Francis Stodderts to call a while.  We all sat up till near midnight.  Cloudy day lt. R. 8 PM and nt.

Cloudy rain in night  not enough to wet the make mud.  Got some things up at room and over store.  John Parker says will repair buggy seat for 75c.   Father has been sawing wood lately.  Riley Eastin called to settle paid him 6.00 which is  nearly all I owe him.  He has made nearly ten thousand boarsd for me.  Snider brought us a can of sweet cider.  Help Tue at night with her tomatoes.  Rec prices of seeds from AD Co.  Cloudy most of day cooler PM  Go bed 10 PM.

Partly cloudy N.W. wind.  Post up books in morning.  Pay up Jim Decker in full.   Grand Democratic rally today.  Big crowd in town not all democrats   (?) Uncle John and Bert were down to dinner.  Cooper paid 4.00 on his wood instead of 8.00 as promised.  Buy steak at Bill Meyers on Cr 20.   Laura and her family were here at night.  Phebe and baby both sore throat.  Gobed 10 PM.

Clear.  The girls did not go to Sunday School.  Had dinner at 2.30 P.M.  Went out to Uncle John toward night getting home before dark all the children have bad colds.  Go bed 9 P.M.

Cloudy.  Light rain good part of night .  Write to Wheatly about timothy seed, but before night buy all I want of Geo Wyth @1.85  Got M Miller to put extension on back chimmny at store to stop smoking.   Went to look at  F Knocks Stable in P.M.  Phebe had cold stays home from school.  Light rain fore noon clear off PM.  Gobed 9 PM

Clear.  Road somewhat muddy.  J.R. Haddocks rides with me part of the way.  Lost my whip, but got it at night.    Boys work at poling and staking fence.  Bob not at home.  Storm comes up about 3 P.M.  Much wind down there and very little rain.  Heavy rain and hail uptown.  Came home by Handley's ford road dry  down then muddy.  Near town two or three day.  Phebe went to school got caught in rain.  Gobed 9.30

Ck. 6.50.  Tues finishes fixing an old rug for Buddy.  Tue  attends Aid meet at McCravys P.M.  Fern N; helping Phebe with dress most of day.  I drove E. to Alexander woods. late P.M.  there is  nothing doing in the  woods.  Got home about 7.  Mostly clear day.  Heavy clear day.  Heavy cloud from northerly at 8 P.M. with lots of wind and dust No rain but good deal of thunder.  a light shower later in night.  .o5.  Gobed 9.30.

Mostly clear.  S.W.2.  Rhoda comes to wash, working till 3 P.M.  Get shave A.M. pd.  Later hitch up and drive up town.  Pay E. Light bill for June 1.89 ck.  Perry Grove has recently resigned his posish with Public Service Co.  I got jag of corn of I.B.M. yest.  they pay 65 and sell @ 75c.  I drove N.E. P.M.  going N. on Anderson road and returning by Ashmore road corn look well up that way- No corn firing as yet.  I got home 7.30  Part Cloud day Showers S.E. P.M.  Heavy thunder in that direction about  3 oclock.  wind northerly at night and cleared off.  Go bed 9.30.

Clear. N.E.2.  another change in weather without rain.  Tue goes up later.  I get start to Loxa 9 A.M. going through to farm which look over pretty well.  Cliff at work in B.C. south of house with five teams.  Talk with him while.  Paul and Mr. Cox both sick.  He has four hands hired in  field. has cut say ten acres oats.  Asks me to  send Abbott out - which I did P.M.  Return through Loxa getting home say 1 P.M.getting sheaf oats.  Met Zeke Gilbert.  Toward night drove round by Siberts: he will shoe horse  &c in  morn.  Saw Abbott: Says will go out in morn.  Says Jo Bill now working for Interurban.  Clear day with a steady N.E. whirlwinds.  Lighter at night.  There is no running water in Cossell Creek.  All streams are going dry.  Plenty of water at head wall Loxa Branch.  Tue  and Phebe were up to  hear band in evening.  Fern here during day working with Phebe.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Clear.  N.E. 2.  Tue got letter from Muggs yesterday:  says will be home Saturday.  Got mare shod in front AM.  at Siberts on 7th St.  Cr,  They came for her and return her when shod. Get good steak at Dorsch's.  S. Emmett helping him put up hay.  Clouds up light shower about 1 P.M. with thunder.  More light showers in night.  Order of I.B. late P.M. bu oats and bale threshed timothy which they deliver.  I drove late down Myers house through Wrightsville getting home after 6.  Part cloudy day Strong southwind P.M.  Go bed 9.30.

Cloudy early W.4.  Strong southerly wind all night with light dashes of rain - Not enough to do any good.  I drove S.E. nearly to river AM looking for chickens.  Didn't find any.  I got home noon finding Muggs here, sooner than she expected.  She has four weeks vacation.  Grace and Fern here P.M.  Mostly clear day with high westerly winds.  Old man McGaham died yesterday.  Learn that Sam McPheron is dead at Mattoon.  Tue and girls went up town a while at night.  I  have had bad pain in right side for week.  It worries me.  Got buttermilk at Creamery.  Gobed 10 P

Clear mostly S.W. 3.  Hitch up early.  Tue and girls sleep till about 8.  Tue attends church morning.  Shave self AM.  Had intended to go to ranch or elsewhere AM. but proves to be too hot about 5 P.M.  drove to ice plant for ice and later took drive down by Woodson place.  Corn looks well in spite of the drouth.  I got home 7.30  Roads dry and dusty.  Little signs of rain.  Mostly clear day with strong SW wind.  Go bed 10 P.M.

Cloudy and very threatening.  Heavy black cloud approaching from N.E.  It yielded little rain (05)  The rheumatism in right side which has annoyed me for a week or two so much worse today that keep pretty still.  Toward night I drove SW getting home 8 P.M.  I got three chickens at Louis Songer's 1.00 check.  Part cloudy and threatening but no rain here except sprinkle in morn.  The  corn Emmett planted is up two or three inches.  Corn in country looking well.  Part clear S.W.3.  Go bed 10 PM.

Cloudy with thunder S.2. Sp. rain 6 P.M. .03.  The pain in my side gets worse.  I did not hitch today on account of heat.  Didn't go up town.  Sat in buggy in barnyard much of P.M. reading.  The heat very oppressive.  No rain although cloudy and threatening late P.M.  This drouth is pretty general in the middle West.  Sat with Tue, Muggs and Phebe on hillside after supper.  Wish Buddy was here.  Mosquitoes still pretty bad.  Jack dog something in his throat.  Gobed 9.30 P.  Tue sends box to Buddy Express.

June 3-5, 1913 in Charleston, Illinois

Part cloudy.  Griffins B.C. warehouse burned last night.  Emmett came 7.  Cuts long grass.  Sets out 25 tomato plants.  John Hall hauls away load of wood for Emmett.  Wells did not bring lawn mower.  Get birthday card from Hat.  Maggie sent me a small mem. book.  Let Emmett go at noon paying up 2.65.  Tue and Buddie iron.  Ad Miller called P.M. and will help me at any time.  I drove late P.M. to see Rhoda to wash tomorrow:  from there continue W and return by Helen's getting home 7 PM.  The folks were out at night.  Most clear day N. and N.E. winds.  Cooler at night.  Gobed 9 PM.

Mostly clear.  N.E.2.  oil old buggy.  The new one not yet received.  Has  been shipped since 23 (?).  Rhoda came to wash working till 4 P>M>  I get start for Loxa 9 AM getting home 1 PM.  Drove out through place from Loxa.  Think Harman's crops look better than the average.  I drive to Dennison line.  Found Cliff on NW 40 replanting corn.    Talk a while with him and refuse to go to dinner with him.  I did not take lunch nor Jack.  I stop in Loxa returning long enough to pay Hough S. for putting up yard, fence $7.00 ck.  Few people visible in  in Loxa.  I left Loxa about noon.  The  roads are very dusty.  Before night drive over to Well's for lawn mower.  Paid 50c.    Tom Snider was badly  hurt by auto today.  Mostly clear day with fresh N.E. wind and numerous  small whirlwinds:  Mrs. Curd and Mrs. Brooks over at night.  Go bed 9.30 P.M.

Partly cloudy.  S.E. 3.  learn by phone that buggy has been received at CL Depot. Put in  good  post of forenoon hunting but not finding dray man.  They are very busy.  Phebe writes will be home Sunday.  A letter from Muggs P.M.  does not state when she will be at home.  Gwin and McK brought up buggy P.M.  Sibert came over and set it up.  Although a good buggy I do not feel stucdk on it.  Mostly clear day with moderate S.E. winds.  No signs of rain.  The drouth here is becoming serious.  I had bad spell cramps.  P Maud night.  Tue  and Buddy went down to H.G.'s after supper.  Go b 9.30

Cloudy S.2.  Thunder 7 AM and light rain.  Mostly cloudy day with occasional light rain also some thunder and showers around   Rain here .31 in.  It will help but we need more.  Wind S. getting NW before night and cooler.  I hitch up late P.M. drive round town a little.  Rain didn't make much mud.  Too cold for things to  grow much.  Tue spent evening at Groves.  Strong northerly wind all night.  Mare at Nickles 1st for long time.  Gobed 10.

Cloudy mostly N.4.  Mare from  Stable 8 oc.  Get shave of Yates Brown owe.  Tue writing to girls.  Expects Buddy Friday  and Phebe Sunday.  I take trip S.W. to get Parker and Hatton.  Parker came after dinner and monkeys  with old screens all P.M.  He went down to BPAs for screen wire, and did not do much.  Emmett says will help all I want in a day or two.  I drove late up by Stodderts.  Went over in Dicewoods.  There has not been rain enough to help much.  It but little more than laid the dust round town.  The roads are fine.  Clear day.  Wind N.W.4.  Bradleys have them new auto.  No word from my buggy order. was rec.  May 13.  I get home 6.30 go bed 10.

N. 1.  Phone Sibert to come for old buggy to set tires.  Mrs. Toups washes 1st and works all day at cleaning setting and kitchen.  Bill Hatton worked all AM.  Cut some wood and went with me to cemetery.  Parker worked all day at screens.  Think he will make a weeks work of it if possible.    Phelps SH buggy has been shipped.  Get  bill today.  One of hot days and clear with SW wind 3.  Bill Hatton called at night.    Wants to renovate back house at Loxa.  I leave mare at Nickles and may visit Loxa in the morning.  Warren called a while on front porch about noon.  Gobed 9.30

Parker came and crowded in another half day.  I spent good deal of time hunting for Hatton.  He will do Loxa closet Saturday.  I was over to see Sibert AM.  He will set up new buggy in my shed.  It was shipped last Friday.  One of hottest days to date clear with fresh W. wind.  Harman phones at night.  Seems to be  discouraged about the drouth.(sic)    Think pretty general.  Tue over at Mrs. Curds at night.  Mare at Nickles.  Go bed 10 PM

W.2.  We  go out to cemetery early - before 7 AM. with flowers.  Getting home 8.  Tue went to 11:30 Big 4 train to meet Buddy but she did not come till nearly 3 P.M.  We got letter from  Phebe yesterday saying she had decided to stay another week and will not be  home till about  June 8.  Harman was in 4 P.M.  bringing sack of corn and two bush. oats.  Mrs. Grove was over soon after Buddy got here.  Tue gave me  "jacking up" because I looked at an old lady and her daughter.  This is the warmest day to date and the heat has about floored me.  Mostly xlear clouding up toward night sprinkle rain 8 PM.  Lightning with very distant thunder ten oclock and later.  Gobed 9.30  P.M.

Clear S.3.  I don't know but what I am getting worse-can't get better.  I got hitched up driving up town.  Got lot of stamps . at P.O. and mail letter to H.G. Phelps with 58.50 check for buggy.  I soon drove home.  John Simons, he had just called to see Dr. Patton, called P.M. and talked a while, says has cleaned out our fence row west of him.  Tue busy most of  day cleaning in D. Room. I went up toward night and got sack of corn and bale of straw at Mitchell's.  Tue spent evening at Grove's.  Self take a B.M. pill.  Clear day fresh southwind [sic]  gobed 10

part cloudy S.2. haze.  Learn that Dr. W.R. Patton died last.  Harman phones has about 35 acres corn to plant wants me to come out.  Can't do it.  Tue drawing party today alone P.M.   and drove to see Ray Bennett getting home after 6 about time Tue.  Ray will help me all forenoon if needed. Tue went over to Mrs. Curds after supper.  Part cloudy day with fresh to strong southerly wind.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Part cloudy.  Slept fairly well but still carry pain on right side with some fever.  Rhoda wash AM and worked PM at cleaning.  Ray came  and cut wood for an hour pd. 10c.  I went up early and get shaved.  Feel unusually tough AM.  This the hottest day to date.  Mrs. Grove and Mrs. Heeb called P.M.  I drive late P.M. to country N.W.  I went north to town line W to Pophams S. to R.R. and home S. road.  Many people  planting corn -  some breaking.  The roads are very dusty.  Some clouds today.  Bureau predicts  rain not many signs here.  Mostly clear with strong southerly wind.  Tue worked most of day and went to bed early pretty tired.  Gobed 9.30

N.E.  Don't feel pretty well.  Tue went up to  Dr. Starr getting meddy for me P.M. which I take till bed time with some benefit.  Eastern Ill Interscholastic meet and big crowd from distance - not many farmers.  Hat and H. were here to dinner and he brought package C.O. ordered from JEM early AM.  Pay Alvey Armstrong for paper Loxa house 8.00  Helen sent us 1 lb. butter, 1 dozen eggs and some bread.  I didn't hitch up or go town.  Try several times to fix up order for buggy to HC Phelps but could not finish it.  Tue went up town at night  for grub.  Clear day moderate NE winds.  Keep good furnace fire.  Gobed 10 PM

Clear.  S.E.  Tue went to church AM getting Sunday R.H.  I did not hitch up.  Turn mare in pasture 3 PM.  Am about out of deed of all kinds except pasture  The beans show traces of light frost.  Nobody called.  Can't  see that my case improves any.  I finally get buggy order documents in shape but could not mail letter tonight for want of stamp.  It is to Ohio Carriage Co. Columbus, O.  Check for 58.50 enclosed  also list of names which calls for rebate of 1.00 which I neglected to deduct.  Clear day light southerly wind.  Gobed 9.30

N.3.  I continue to feel poorly sore throat and head ache but have fair appetite.  I do nothing about ordering a buggy today.  Emett (sic) Fritz's boy and another boy were sentenced to reform school.  Have heard nothing from Emmett.  I drove out to  Cemetery late P.M. return S. road.  Cloudy AM clears off P.M. fresh N. Wind.  Gobed 10 P.M.

N.E.2.  Tue accidentally left faucet running and emptied tank last night and had  to keep pump running till bed time.  Cool morn but think no frost.  I drove up town before noon.  Met Geo Rosebraugh near his office.  He wants to trade prairie farm in Morgan Tp for our house and lot.  I try to write order buggy but have to give it up.  Don't feel well as yest.  Rhoda came at noon washed and did other work P.M.  I drove 4 P.M. to Alexander timber and old mare came near  upsetting me when I turned back at top of river hill.  I got  back 6 P.M.  Few people planting yet and much ground still unbroken.  Gobed 10 P.M.   Tue to PM with Mrs. B.

Clear. S.E.2.  Feel poorly all day.  Kit Carson Circus in town Don't think large crowd.  Write H.C. Phelps that will send him list of names and an order for buggy tomorrow.  Tue spent afternoon at Hats.  I drove up town toward night.  Mr.  Bell had operation performed last evening. Dr. Greer.  I have eaten but little today.  Have had little appetite for a week.  Clear day moderate S.E. winds.  It is becoming very dry, grass is not growing fast, nor oats.  Gobed. 9.30  Ellen Elkins calls P.M.

N.E.3.  Looks much like rain,  Can't complain of feeling any worse this morn.  I gave buggy good oiling and cleaning and drove up town.  Tue ironed before dinner.  I felt worse P.M. and at night.  Think took more cold.  Intended order buggy from Phelps but feel hardly able.  Light rain about noon and very  light drizzle much  of P.M.  We did  not fire in furnace but needed it.  It grew rapidly colder after 4 P.M.  Gobed 9 PM.  R (.10)

Clear mostly S.2.  Had high fever all night didn't sleep much.  Emmett cleaned up site of old house and quit at noon Pay him up in full check $6.75 will get his wood away Monday if possible.  I felt very poorly all day and took big dose oil about.  Ate nothing much during day - very sore throat - Drove up town AM. but didn't move round much P.M.    Tue out a while go bed 8.30 some cloudy P.M.

Mostly cloudy. S.2. Some better this morn and ate some breakfast.  Drove up for paper.  Tue  went to church.  I am trying to decide on a buggy from H. G. Phelps.  Sprinkles rain several times during day.  I drove down by hog farm after 3 P.M. very light shower sent me home.  Mort and Kate were over P.M. till near night, after which Mrs. Curd called till about 9 oc.  It threatened rain many times today but did not lat the dust heaviest about 8 P.M.  Go bed 11 P.M.

clear mostly S.2.  Tue cleans house some alone  upstairs.  Trial of Chas Fritz and other boys did not come up.  Threatening weather all day.  Heavy clouds with thunder N at 8 AM  Thunder NW 4 PM. with sprinkle rain here wind S to SW. about 4 PM  I drove down by Woodson place returning by Wrightsville.  The roads are good  getting dry and rain is  needed.  Several have planted corn.  Have felt slightly better today not enough to encourage me much.  Harman phones that planter does not drop regular and will get  a grader today for his seed  corn.   I got  another letter from Phelps today but have not yet scketched(sic) buggy.  Read catalogues of books at night.  Gob. 9.30

Clear.  Good many people in town today.  Uncle John down to dinner.  Snider called after dinner.  Sold old buggy to Nicholson for 12.00 to pay next week.  Comer was up P.M.  Has not yet decided what he will do.  Pay freight & dray(?) on case Bethesda recd recently.  Learn that Ed Eastin was partly paralyzed and is going  to springs.  Pay Warren Decker 5.00 on hauling wood.  Engage Riley Eastin to make lot of red oak (1 tree) boards and deliver in town @ 40 cents per hundred.  Lightening N & NW at night storm came up about 11 P.M.  little rain 8,30 P.M.

Most ly cloudy S.2.  Mare had foot fast in wire fence for the third time.  I went to Brown's for shave(pd) after breakfast at  8 AM.  Thunderstorm (.43) held me at meat shop for an hour.  I did not hitch till after dinner went to bank 2 P.M. Jack Hurst reports big wind today at his place.  Talk Bill Decker.  Thinks can get cull ties cheap of Threlkeld.  I drove E. to  timber.  Thunder NW sent sent me home before ready.  Get home 5 P.M.  Jack did not go with me.  Much cloudy today and threatening all day.  Much cloudy all day.  Heavy  storm 6 P.M. and after .  The thunder and lightening were great.  It continued over an hour.  R. 2.10 inches  this is the biggest we have had for several years.  The branch was well up and trolley line shut down.  Our electric lights were nixed all evening.  Took mare to Nickles after storm first time since.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Clear.  Shaved myself before breakfast.  Dug some potatoes in garden  will not have many more than I planted owing to bugs and drouth.(sic)   Girls went to  Sunday school wearing blue dresses whichTue has just finished.  Perfectly clear with E. wind  and a little more comfortable than yesterday.  Went up to store and stayed awhile after dinner.  Everybody seems to be driving.  My buggy not done so I have to stay at home.  Write to Cha Bot Works remitting 11.00.  Write  Phobest Co. to inquire about over charge.  Gobed 10.30

Clear, hazy. N.1.  Tue set out her celery plants yesterday.  I drove uptown A.M.  Met Rairdin at P.O.  He wants me to go to ranch and report as to his ranch.  They are putting an iron railing around monument.  Tue got  letter from Buddy, she arrived at Reasor's all right   Phebe went riding with Sue P.M. and Tue went up town.  Mostly clear AM.  Milky blue sky.  Some lazy cummili deloflofi into light thunder showers north.  Light south wind.  Was alone till bed time.  Go bed. 9.30

Clear or nearly so.  Wash and oil  my harness.  Girls went to Mary Fackler's School in forenoon.  Hammock recd from St. Louis does not suit very fell.  Express 45c.  Mauice  Larry here most of P.M.  Went up to see how Listen was getting along with buggy,  had just begin to work on it.  H.G. down today Trying  to figure how much lumber the city has.  Tue    making some blue dresses for Maggie and Phebe.  Mostly clear day E wind Go bed 10 P.M.

Monday, June 24, 1912  5.15 A.M.  ther.  58.  82.  70. = 70.

Clear, N.1.  Parker went to Loxa and found work done by Weal.   So phone from Loxa.  Otherwise going out.  I didn't see Parker.  Try to get Tue  to go out to Helen's* with me but didn't..  Drove up to Frank Balch's P.M. taking packages left here by Kate.    Buddy went P.M. to see Jessie Dunn taking Charles in his buggy.  I did not drive much.  Mare very nervous about fire crax which are now in season.  Today got letter from Muggs AM.  Tue over at Grove's at night.  Mostly clear light northeasterly winds.  Gobed 9.30

Clear.  Start for Mill at 8.30  with father.  Tried to get some hickory bark but gave up.  Horse got scared while I was getting ready to feed her ran away and tore up every thing "Dad" and I  had to ride home with Jo Easton  gathered up what we could find.  Left buggy down there in two or three places.  Get home at about 8 o'clock P.M. pretty well tired out.  Clouds up toward night and looks like rain.  Need it everything is drying up.  Wheat looks well and mostly cut  Go bed 10 P.M.
