Clear with SW wind.  Uncle John in town and down to dinner.  Warren brought up half cord of wood which he sold.  H.G learns that his dog shot yesterday was still alive and he went out after him in afternoon.  N E Welch pays 19.78 for lumber bought last summer.  Maggie starts wearing truss which Tue  bought some time since.  She didn't go to school P.M.  Tom Houghton drummer  here.  I caught some cold the first of week worse today.  Clear day with SW wind snow mostly disappears.  gobed 11.30~

Mostly cloudy wind N.N.W.  Settle with March & Bradley $4.00.  Remit in full to Mullany & Hagen 372.95  Warren brought half cord which sold from wagon.  Tue interested in doings at Pres. church keeping her from noon till bedtime  The girls took their supper there  Brownfield brought down two barrels.  Old Mrs. Eastin died about 5 P.M.  Doug Clark had his leg crushed by locomotive last night and had it taken off.  Sal Greenfrilder drummer in town.  Gobed 12.30

Clear, NW wind.  Brownfield cleans out stable.  Bill Myers takes out 3 hogs to kill.  Tue and went out to old cemetery to  old Mrs. Eastins burial in afternoon.  Warren brought up load of wood which sold to Brownfield.  Warren take out hangings for barn door.  Trade dull clear day with NW wind.  Get horse shock at Pucks.  PD 85c  Gobed  12.30  Myers took out 3 hogs to kill.

Mostly clear.  Southwind.  Marie sick before breakfast and did not go to school, but she went up town P.m. Wilton phones me that axle not heard from yet.  I did not go up town today.

Chilly partly cloudy day.  with S. wind.  House very cold AM.  Lizzie Shoats and their girls here P.M.  I sat in basement reading magazines &c till go bed  11.30 PM

11.  Wednesday  6 39  AM.  Ther  28.  44.  33  =  35

Mostly clear E. wind.  The snow did not disappear yesterday.  Mrs. Smith came abut 7 AM. to iron.  She works till 5 P.M. raking off leaves. &c.  Wilton has heard from buggy axle.  It will be here in a day or two.  I ate too much dinner and went without supper.  Felt badly all P.M. and night.  It is reported that there are several cases of small pox in town.  Sat and read Sunday R.H. in basement   Go bed 10 P.M.

Partly cloudy: easterly wind.  Light white frost.  Growing warmer all day settling in south.  Hire buggy at Buckley's at noon and after dinner went out to Gaines, getting there about 2 PM.   Met Mrs. Shirley who said Shirley got-ran in" yesterday and she had not heard from him since.  I helping Charley Talbot.   Mrs. Gaines brother Wal. there.  Shirley stock running in corn field  Partly cloudy hazy day with high southerly [sic]  Roads pretty good.  Little mud on  un-graveled portion.  I got some carrots today.  Coming home met Mrs. Shirley with him  Tue went at night to entertainment at Normal along with Groves.  Phebe helping Marie  out with her algebra  Tue got home about 10.30  Gobed 10.30

Note to readers:  Due to my jobs I have gotten behind,I am sorry that I must catch up by just giving the highlights from those entries I have missed.

May 1914

29.  The schools let out today.  The high school had a big show at theater tonight.  

30.  Saturday.  We went out to Cemetery .  Many people out there early.  There has been a big steamship wreck on St. Laurence The "Empress of Ireland" lost in collision over a thousand reported drowned.

The memorial  parade will be tomorrow.  Will not be able to participate.

31.  Sunday.  The boys  get started at ball playing , but quit at Tues request.

June 1914

1.  Monday.  Dan McCarty is putting fixtures  for jewelry Store  in the Monroe room next to my old stand.

2.  Tuesday.  This birthday biz is becoming monotonous.  Phebe sent me a pocket book.  

3.  Wednesday.  The State  meet of G.A.R. is going on at Mattoon with large attendance.  Tomorrow is a their big day.  

4.  Thursday.  Mrs. John  Abbott died yesterday.  

5.  Friday.  The encampment elected Bishop Fallows Commander State GAR this AM.  Learn Tom Threlkeld died this  morning.  

6.  Saturday.  Tue puts in much of day, cleaning house and ironing.  She broke electric iron.  I made three trips to plant to repair it.  The Warman kids are annoying us some.

7.  Sunday.  Tom Threlkeld funeral 2 P.M.  Lost my specs.  Old mare made break getting bridle tangled with shafts.

8.  Monday.  Tue cleaning in dining room.  Moves her ice box into pantry and gets ice in it for fish.  Morty came over and did the carpentry work.  He also put up Phebe's swing on porch.  The alarm of fire about 3 PM in S part  of town.  It would serious time  for fire to get started every  thing is day as powder.

9.  Tuesday.  4.30  AM.  Ther.  72.   98.  84.  =  84 2/3

clear S.2.  Jones phones Duggins is about move out of Loxa house.  I spent morn tying up old papers for junk.  Helen called with butter and eggs.  Pay her a/c in full except today ch. 4.15  Mrs. W. Gro calls to see Tue.  Emma quit at noon.  Tue rests  P.M.  I drove E of town down by Sain Stevens Lane; got to warm.  Crops look better than one would expect with such weather.  Today the warmest to date.  Pick up Alfred Smith on road.  Get IC at Teeples which was all for sup.  Tue over to Julia Kenayers at night.  Lightining round at night.  Mostly clear day with brisk southwesterly winds  Gobed 10P

Cloudy wind S.E. looks like rain.  Cloudy.  H.G. was down in morning.  Baby broken out with measles or something similar.  Drove down to river to shoot turkey with Bill Kelly at 5 P.M.  got home at 9.  Ate supper down  down there.  Shot several but didn't get any of them.  Tue  churns first time.  the Alumni folks call on Tue for assistance.  Gobed 10 PM.

24.  Thursday.  6 AM.  Ther.  63.  80.  65.

Some cloudy wind S.E.  Thunder with some rain toward morning.  Sultry day.  Clouds up P.M. and began to rain about 4.30 with much thunder.  Rain continuing into night.  Decker brought half cord wood for  winter.  T. Thelkeld Pd me  5.00 for Bethesda.  Got 6 pans at McNuts on Cr.  Last day of school M &P both went.  Find curculio have been working at the plums.   C not very well today.  Gobed  9.30 PM.  

25.  Friday. 5.45  AM.  60.  75.  61.

Cloudy W. wind, misty.  Snider was up AM wanting some spirit.  Got brown suit of clothes at Winters, they seem to  suit very well.  Drove over to  Miles over with  Tue toward night.  The Alumni meeting is there  tonight.  Kate  Myers and Kate Perrill called toward night.  Has been mostly clear day.  The  rain last night made roads pretty muddy.  The suit at  Winters cost 30.00 on Cr.  He owes me for 3/4 cord wood 2.25.  Go bed 10 PM~

26.  Saturday,   5.45 AM.  60.  85.  70.

Clear Very heavy dew.  did not find any curiculio but see they have been at work some.    The old cow has about eaten up her pasture.  She is a great eater but does not give much milk.   The locust

trees are in full bloom.  Grass on meadows looks short owing to dry weather.  All kinds of fruit seems ti be set pretty full.  Lombard plums are about an inch long.  Peach trees have good many on. Corn looks yellow and small but is beginning to grow now.  Cut worms have been very bad this year.  Garden stuff of all kinds is backward on account of early dry weather.  Ground  up scythe and mow grass for cow.  Engage Bill Kelly to help me next week perhaps a latter week.  Uncle John in town.  Sultry day.  Took Tue out to cemetery after  supper to set out some flowers.  Go bed 10 PM.

20.  Wednesday.   6 A.M.  Ther.  44.  66.  52.  = 54

Mostly clear S.W. 2.  Tue and I start to Loxa about 9 A.M.  taking Jack and no lunch.  Tue stopped to see Mrs. Gaines and Mrs. West.  We drove up to to house.  They have some thirty acres corn to shuck.  We drove over to Cliffs but would not stay to dinner.  Look at his hogs &c.  He gives me check for 42.79 for 104 50/70  bu corn bringing my half of "pond" called 3 1/2a.  After going about an hour  we get home  at 2 P.M.  Tue gets letter from Muggs at Jeff City.  She seems  to like it pretty well.  Mrs. Knock calls P.M.  Fine day with light S.S.W.  wind clear.  Tue  stirs up old afcs at night and reads an hour or two from this book.  Gobed 8.30 P.M.  We stop at cemetery returning.

Clear.  Waterworks froze up in house  also out doors.  Went up to store after breakfast for Doc Dunbar some corn.  Peel lot of  quinces and sweet apples which Tue cooks after dinner.  Got  mare out about 3 P.M.  Took Tue drive round town awhile.  Baby has a bad cold. from yesterday.  Gobed 9.30~~

Mostly cloudy, S.2.  Got sauce P.M.  Rhoda came to wash early, staying to dinner.  We engage two or three plasterers and painters but none show up.  Andrews & Co take back all our unused lumber P.M.  Tue gets letter from Phebe.  Two boys from Douglas Co took 4 bu pears P.M. shaking them off.  I drove to Dicewoods late P.M. return by cemetery and south road.  Part cloudy day threatening at times Light showers about noon, did not lay the dust.,  Lightning at night.  Must have been quite a shower out by Corsel Creek.  Tue went to PM with Mrs. Brooks.  gobed 9 P

Cloudy.  Heavy rain in night with some thunder.  Bim brought in some eggs after breakfast.  Learn that Jas Ashmore is very low has been sick some time.  Drive with Tue toward night out by Cemetery and round town.  Has been cloudy day with sprinkles rain AM.  Maggie and Ph. went over to Perrills toward night.  The rain last night was the heaviest since last spring.  Was getting dryer than before.  Gobed 9 PM.

Cloudy, N.2.  Tue and I drove out to cemetery 10 AM taking a few flowers which we distributed among the graves.  Flowers are not plentiful this year.  Big crowd at cemetery.  We drove out to  Helens getting home before noon getting some butter and eggs of Helen.  We did not go out in P.M.  Late I drove out by Latta's returning by Helen's.  They have put in a temporary bridge over Cassell Creek near Big 4 RR preliminary to building new cement bridge.  Tue over to Brooks at night.  Part clear day.  Moderate N to variable winds.  Go bed 10.

Cloudy and light rain.  Thunder shown in the night.  Start for timber about 9 AM.  Roads very muddy part of the way.  Got to Milt's after 11oc. after he got his dinner we drove up to Hanleys.  He gave his consent for us to drive with lumber through his place.  Left Milt at Handley ford and got home about ?PM. quite a shower fell while coming home.  Kate Davis here to supper.  Find that ants have been destroying a good many of my worms.  A little coal oil put near their track seems to stop them.  Went up to P. McGurtys place after supper to consult with other fellows about license on a vote on license which will (?) at council meeting Thursday night.  Go bed 10 PM.  Got osage from Handley's hedge.

Clear S.E.3.  The "song birds" are eating all our cherries.  The Gov. Wood* had more than usual on. Drove out to Cemetery AM.  Find Snider boys have cleaned up Hildreth lot.  Tom Talbott is breaking piece N of fairground.  I got home before noon.  Tue spent P.M. at H.G's.**  As before said they are living in E.H. Clark's house N.E. Mon & 4 where they have no rent to pay.  Part cloudy day self remain at home feeling rather worse than common.  Phebe went to Frances after supper.  Tue called on back St. till 9 P.M.  The city authorities seem to be examining library lot and incidentally (perhaps) my premises.  They made not report.   Lightening N.W. at night, and many other reliable signs of rain.  Electric light people read meter (389.000)  This is my reading as I was not present  when Miller was here.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Clear some cloudy P.M.  N.W. wind Young comes early and mows yard and hillside.  Boys continue to rob our berry patch.  Tue and Delia take up carpet in hall in afternoon and tear off old paper.  The silkworms are so much trouble from having no place to keep them that I may have to let them go.  The  alumni meeting was tonight at Fackln's.  Tue did not go.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Clear S.S.W.3. Emmett came, was sick yest.  He mows yard A.M.  The machine worked fine.  Cut weeds in pasture.  In P.M. we went to cemetery and worked an hour or two cleaning off lots.  Kate and Stella call about 11 A.M.  They are back on a visit from California where they went four years ago.  Emmett went to cutting weeds on Perkins lot after we got back.  Tue washed A.M. and was over to Grove's by request several times today.  Mr. G does not seem well today.  Tue visits Mrs. LeReck at night.  Clear day strong southwind (sic).  K&S went over to Frank's to dine Phebe and Ora Webb arrive 11P.M.  Phebe lost her trunk on trip home.  Go bed 10.30 P.M.

 Hot day and mostly clear.  Drive with Tue, Phebe and baby up N. of town and also down to water works after dinner.  Kate Davis over while  P.M.  Went with Ruth and Maggie after Osage.  Thunder shower with wind and heavy rain after 10 P.M.  Caught a large gray moth last night, she deposited after I caught her about 100 eggs.  The  roads are getting very good.  The silk worms are getting to be very much in the way.  There are some 10,000 or 15,000 of them and they occupy more room every day.  Gobed 10 P.M.
