Clear E wind.  Phebe and I start for ranch 8 M.  Nobody at home.  we stay round barn a while them went over on Long Point and ate our dinner looked for fungi finding very few.  At no time since early spring have they been so scarce.  It is very dry and corn is needing rain.  The boys have gone over all of it plowing and cutting out weeds and sprouts,  Think will thresh this week.  Folks were at home when we got back to barn.  Left for home about 530 went up Indian creek  Gobed  930.

Mostly clear hazy.  Phebe went with parties to "breakfast picnic" and was early.  Abbott came to work at 7.  He hitched up for me and I left at about 8 AM.  Met C. Talbott and D Auduson up town, and got out to Gaine's about 10 AM.   Jo trimming hedge  I drove down to to Loxa for  for barbed wire and employed Ed Wright to help Jo Hicaure at 1 PM. and they patch up fence around.  They had worst rain at Loxa ever known Branches higher.  It must have been much heavier than in town.  Jo avens that he measured it five inches in can in yard. Riley creek was over the road at near Township line.  Buy 100 b.wine  @ 3.50 and 10 cts staples at Chad H. Jones'.  Jo says he has had to sit up nights to watch water gap.  Mrs. G. and girls picking blackberries P.M.  I went over and thinned out E. half of seed plot  It is looking better.  I was also out where Jo and Ed were at work.  Corn looking well except down some  Oats all right but more of them down than other day.   I got home at say 6 P.M.  Jack dog came with me has been at Gaine's since Wednesday.  Muggles are the order with the the authorities now.  Much  cloudy today with sprinkles rain at times: distant  thunder AM SW and W. wind S.E. to S.W. 4  Heavy storm develops about 9.30 with much wind and thunder considerable rain.  It tore up Kitchen screen door  It continued lighter till perhaps midnight  gobed 10 P.M.

Mostly cloudy, or foggy light easterly wind  Shirley called AM.  I did not have lease ready for him to sign.  Pete Drake carried out ashes from setting R.  pit.  but didn't have time to clean out the stable.  He was drunk before night.  Will attend to stable Monday.  Republican primaries PM.  Vote about 4 P.M.  The regular organization won.  Cloudy day with easterly wind self feeling badly  Several young people here at night playing cards till after 10 P.M.  Light snow P.M. and  night.  Say 2 in. and grows colder.   Snow and mist 5 P.M.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Clear, strong NW wind which was blowing all night  The 2 in snow that fell after dark last night drifted good deal.  Kept petty business making fires today. Tue sent package to Maggie by Lewis Marshall.  Clear day with brisk NW wind and colder at night.  Gobed  8 .15 PM.

Clear Light. N.W. wind Pete Drake came to work but stable frozen up.  Mrs. Smith came to wash before 7 A.M. and worked till after 5 P.M.  Mrs. Knock and Mrs. Grove visiting Tue toward night.  Clear AM but mostly cloudy P.M. with variable wind settling into south with 1 in snow at 5 P.M.  Tue feeling badly with  neuralgia in face all day, and retired early  Gobed 9 PM

Clear N.W.wind.  Change in night blowing a regular cyclone  about  1 oclock with snow.  Proves to be  one of worst days this winter to keep house warm.  Very high NW wind clear and pleasant with  ther. but little above zero.  Tue still suffers with her face and retired early.  Mort and Kate  were over till 9 P.M.  I got up at midnight fearing something wrong with furnace but was all right.  Got meddy for Tue in night.  Gobed 9 PM.

Mostly clear, wind W. Rhoda ironed AM.  Tue did not get up today,  but seems to be feeling better.  Charley Talbot called P.M. reporting Jo's Folks all right,  but want me to come out.  Met Tennant Bridges yesterday.  He said would mail me amt due on rent at once.  Mostly clear AM Cloudy P.M. south wind with light snow about dark.  one inch.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Cloudy, Southwind, Snw flying.  Tue feeling some better and got up late P.M. eating supper with us.  Self feel badly with stomach all day  and take medicine which gets me out in night.  Dick Cadle offers me 1000.00 for 100 feet bottom.  Jack dog did not show up today and we fear he is lost or dead.  Cloudy day wind south to NW and colder at night.  Buy lot gro. at night Wrights PM.  Light snow again toward gobed 9 PM.

Clear, NW. wind  Jack came this morning having been gone since night before last.  They are moving barn from Woodson place to seventh St.  Have it as far as church.  Tue lay in bed till after breakfast.  Buy bread 10   hominy 10    beans 15     at Wrights AM Cr  Had some trouble getting water at barn thawed out  today.  Dick Wright wants to work for me also wants to borrow money.  Our water pump has not worked this week been out of  order several weeks.  Kate and Mort came after I went to bed.  Mostly clear day NW wind gobed 8 P.M.

Mostly clear, light NW wind.  Sort over lot of old papers AM. finding tax receipt for Loxa land, (8 1/2 a) that has been sold.  Marie and  and Helen went with Ferd out to Sniders to visit over Sunday.  Phebe has party of fourteen girls here to supper 8 P.M.  I spend evening in basement reading.  The suit of various parties against the County comes up Monday 24th Long article with picture of  Court House in Chicago Record Herald today.  Meet tie man at McGurty's Combs.  Mostly clear day NW wind gobed 9 P.M.

Mostly cloudy SW wind.  Bert and Rene came in A.M. and stayed to dinner and until 4 P.M.  It began to snow before 10 P.M.  and continued until 5 P.M.  about 1 1/2 inches.  Court  adjourned last Saturday to meet again  on Feby. 24, when Courthouse case will be tried.  My stomach feeling badly  Gobed  7.30 P.M.

S.2. white frost.  Ice 1/5 in.  Self poorly today stomach off~~  Bill came early working at wood mostly.  Fixed fences along hill  Cleaned up wood pile and to things in good shape.  .Tue attended RC at Chenowith's PM.  Think ate too many tomatoes for dinner.  Bill carried up coal and wood and grist at 5 PM.  Paid him in full to date 3.00  He works only 9 hours per day now.   Lyndhorst has started a mail order house  style of S.R.& Co.  See ad in Courier.  I did not visit town.  Part cloudy with high southerly wind.  Gobed 8.

Cloudy with light rain.  10.  Feeling better this morning but not up to mark.  It quit rain 7 AM.  I did not feel able to hitch up today and drive.  chilly northwesterly wind all and part cloudy.  I have very little appetite and feel worse than usual.  Tue went up late getting grub.  Pleasant day and good many people hitch in wagon yard which think they have to pay for now.  Gobed 9

Clear. N.W.1.  white frost. Ice 1/8 in.  we heard door slam up stairs in night last.  1.30 AM. and feared burglars, but proved to be nothing more than a latch slippery.  I  had to shave myself again and don't like it very well.  Tue went to church AM.  Boys seem to be figuring on playing ball again at the Library  lot.  I hitch up 3 P.M.  Tue went over to Groves  till night.  I drove to Alexander woods going by Ashmore road crossing to S. road on E road.  Clear day light NW winds.  Self not feeling well.  Go bed 9 P.M.

Clear.  N.1.  Bill and Jo plant their potatoes at Mrs. Curds.  I hitch up and start Loxa about 10 AM.  Mare was very downsy(sic) along road.  I did  not get there till nearly noon.  Harman and Shrievs sowing oats east of branch.  They have only about 15 acres sown.  I drove up through place.  They have got 80 wired up.  Had to go up to gate west of house.  Met Shrine at BC shed.  He went over the east cover meadow with  irri(sic).  It will have to be plowed up.    The S.W. field, 20 a, very doubtful except small piece of timothy.  I took him home and return through Loxa.  Did not see Harman.  He started for his other place soon after I got to shed.  Drove round by  Loxa house but did not stop there.  Get sack meal at Jones  paid 10.  Charley  pays me house rent 6.70.  Talk with Hugh Sidenstricker and  Al Harman.  Stop at Gaines.  Mrs. G. brought the Retha baby out to see me.  They are remodeling their house.  the roads are dry, some rough except gravel.  I got home say 4.30.  Got  new record from Phebe AM.  Jack dog didn't go.  Mrs. Chas. Griffith called P.M.  Mrs. Grove came over at night and Morty later  Gobed 8.30

Cloudy . heavy fog N.W.1. write short letter to Tue and send her three Couriers, also letter recd. from Muggs.  The fog clears off about  10 AM.  Bureau predicts cold wave tonight and tomorrow and then began falling about noon dropping 22 degs. by bedtime.  Saw McG. PM. and settle to date.  Forgot to order more of same which will need soon.  I had thought to go up town P.M. but too cold and sloppy.  There is much snow still on ground.  Jack dog seems better today.  Phebe out at night with Fern till after I retire.  I play graphophone most evening.  Gobed 9.30

Part cloudy N.E. 1.  S. neglect to call Ph. she came down at 8.  It is not cold morn although feels so.  A very cold wave has visited north of us some parts report - 44.  We got letter from Tue written yestermorn.  The sta(?) was mostly rain down there.  Phebe went to dentist AM.  She intends going to Chicago in a week or two and to Havana Mar. 1.  The  The President Wilson has removed embargo from arms into Mexico and we may look for livelier time in Mex.  I put in most of the day and evening sorting over old letters back in the 60s.  Fern down P.M. staying to supper and the night.  I sat up much later than usual looking over letters.  I think ate too much supper.  Mostly clear day and promise of cold night Gobed 12   Chas chored

Self feeling poorly think have been eating too much.  Get JEMc bill AM and find error which will adjust later.  Hat phones AM asking about Turie.  H.G. called and will get package at Interurban late this evening.  He brought same 5 P.M.  and did not seem feeling  very well  I gave him two bundles of old letters today (war letters)  Fern was here to dinner.  She is helping Phebe sew.  Phebe is due at Havana Mar. 1.   Fern helps Phebe but went home.  Part clear day light easterly winds.  Gobed 9

Cloudy.  E.3.  Rain 4 AM freezing to trees &c fog later at sunrise.  Send some Couriers and patterns to Buddy.  I felt poorly all AM. but was very glad to eat quite a dinner about 2 PM.  The rain and ice that fell last night and early AM measured .55 in Wind got westerly AM.  Predictions are out for cold wave today.  Charley Smith chored and pay him up to date 45 cts. for week.  Fern came to help Phebe P.M.  Phebe intended going to Ferns after supper but it grows colder with fierce west wind and snow flurries which,   continues all night.  (she didn't go)  It took good fires  P.M. and night and P and I fix up pipes & WC so think cant freeze.  When we retired house was warmer than has been this winter.  Gobed 11 PM.

Cloudy, W. 6. with light snow flying.  There was violent wind all night.  some  of the gusts must done damage. I could not sleep much.  The fires went down and by 4 AM the house was  pretty cold.  Ground about covered with light snow say 1/4  in.  Nothing in house frozen up.  Phebe gets letter from Miss Fagen says must be in Chicago  next Sat. and ready to work at Havana on 23.  Phebe takes check check up to deposit being what have left of Harman  last settle.  Deposit  2d 57.75  I slept  an hour or so in den after dinner.  Fern called and she and Ph went  to Mrs. Littletons.  Phebe woke me about  to say Tue  was coming.  It proves a mistake.  Gobed 8.30

W.3.  Phebe did not go out.  Fern got R.H. stayed to dinner  Phebe trying to get ready to start with Fern to Chicago.  Tuesday, if Tue should get home.  I shave self AM.  o.k.  Went out to  barn to thaw out hydrant but find it open  all right.  We had dinner 2 PM.  The  cold continues much the same and about all self-can do to keep fires.  Charley Smith who does chores did not chore today.  there is coal enough to last this week  the weather permitting.  Much of the old snow on ground in spots.  It didn't drift.  I have to fix up S.W.  W.C. to keep from freezing these nights.  fine day but cold.  Moderate westerly wind.  Gobed 9

Clear.  S.E.2.  Phebe got out  before 8  She fed a tramp.  Another called for sox getting none.  The furnace balked and burnt out  after breakfast.   (?) to dump whole thing and start over.  Helen calls AM.    We get letter from Tue AM stating will come home today.  She didn't however, Phebe gets letter from Miss Fager.  She  wants her to begin work 23d (?).  Fern leaves for Chicago tomorrow.  Phebe has to go but fears cant get ready unless Tue comes.  She got large suitcase.  Tue has her grip  clear day with variable winds.  gobed 8.30 P.

Most clear N.E3.  Tue getting ready to go Mt. C.  all AM. and leaves on 3.13 PM.  Train late.  A bad day for it.  Light rain or sleet much of day beginning at 7 .  She thinks of staying with Buddy about 10 days.  Phebe went to train with her.I intended to hitch up.  Had I done so would have left Mare at Nickles for night.  Freezing all day with Northeasterly wind, but into sleet toward night and kept it up till after 2 AM when turned to snow.  Everything covered with ice.  Gobed 8.30

Cloudy. N.W. 3.  snowing with 4 or 5 in. of ice and water on the ground. Ther. fell last night.  H.G. call to renew note to renew for 90 d. 35.00.  Cold water, Bill cleans out paths.  Pd 50 c.  It stops snowing 9 AM.  Harman came in after dinner and settles for several old lots of corn.  Pays 112.07 of 12.00 being for 30 bu. soft corn @ 40 c sold to him.  He brought us 1 lb. of butter.  I pay him 2.15 for butter, beef and glass.  After he left I hitch up mare to take her up to barn but phone them to come for her.  Precipitation today measured about six inches snow and sleet which fell last night and yesterday 1.57 in. in all.  Learn by paper that Mr. Marvel has been nominated for P.M. at Clinton.  Mostly clear day light westerly winds.  

The Weather &c at Charleston, Ill.  Jany 1914.

Average temperature 37.7.  Maximum 68 on the 28th.   Minimum 12 on 12th.  Cloudiness 64 per cent.  Precipitation 2.73 inches S(?)now say six inches.  Coldest day 12th. warmest 58 2/3.  The winds have been North 4 2/3; N.E. 1;  S.E. 2 1/3;  S 10;  S.W. 4 1/3; W. 1 and Northwest 6 2/3 days.  The roads have not been so bad.  I have not driven much and horse has been at nickles most of the month.  Corn is selling at 52 cts  Cliff says.  There is much poor corn last year.  Country butter 30 Eggs 30.  The ground is covered with say 5 inches heavy snow' an sleet.  Trees loaded with ice.  This wont compare with same of our sleet storms.  In Feb. 1869 much large timber was destroyed by a sleet.

W.2.  There seems to be little doing here today.  Phebe went up for R.H. getting a  later edition than usual which contains weather report.  The storm was pretty general in the north Central west.  I fix up my weather for January.  Shave self rather late P.M.  Jack dog is sick, had a fit in kitchen, also had one yesterday when Harman got scared.  We got letter from Muggs yesterday.  Nobody called  Phebe anJ.E.Md self spend day reading.  The ice mostly leaves trees an snow settles good deal.  Gobed 9.30

 them all well.  The snow gets patchy today but it  grew cooler P.M. after the rain.  Electric bill 3.90 for Jan.  Talk with J.E.M. as he passed in morn.  Mattoon votes tomorrow on commish proposition 1 or 3 .  Charley does chores and will return Wed. eve.  I made mush at night.  Ph bought same also.  Clear at night.  gobed 9

Clear.  S.W.3.    Tue did not get up till past 7.  I get off to ranch say 9.  Get there about11.  Warren was at home and he and I drove over both pieces land   in buggy.  Warren has done good deal of work cuttingbriars on his part burning.  We parted near back gate and I ate my dinner out on usual point after walking about an hour on north side.  I had not been there for two or three years.    The brush and trees are growing fast.  Warren has good passage where says can get down the hill and will try it some day.  We drove round by Ikes he was not at home.  Warren went with me down to Jo Hadley place where they are building a new barn.  Had to  wait to Jack dog  at ford.  I got home 6 PM.  Jack would not ride  and about gave out.  Mrs. Grove Mrs. Brooks and Mr. Grove were there when I arrive.  Idid not meet them but stay down till church time when they left  Tue going with them after setting out supper.  Clear day with moderate westerly winds.  Gobed 8.30

Clear. S.E.1.  Gas,  Miller worked the day painting mostly N. side .  The waiting paint expected today.  Itdidn't come.  Gus was here and picks some pears for us.  Tue went to Albert Alexanders with Ollie Rosebraugh with flowers for May Edman who died yesterday.  I drove to Loxa 2.30 Pm Call at Loxa house.  Family has moved in.  They want latches on inside doors and floors patched.  Harman is cutting B.C. south of  brick house and met him near shed.  He rode with me to NW 40 where he has several acres of five bull nettles with very little corn.  At Loxa settle with Charley Jones to date getting sack Canarota flour and one of meal. paid bal. 7.16 check  He paid me 4.50 for posts and rent on house 5.00  They are about half done the B.C.   The seeder Bill Decker pulled in  4 P.M.  Harman let me out NW gate and rode to his house.  Jack dog went but wouldn't ride.  I went home from Harmans N. rode getting there 6 P.M.  Clear day with southerly wind Gobed.  8.30.

Part cloudy SE1.  gas.  Miller came working till 10 AM. where quit for want of paint which failed to come.  H.G. came AM. and got a few pears.  .  They are nearly gone.  Pay telephone for Sept. 1.50 ch.  Tue went driving with Mrs. Chas. Griffith going to Loxa and the farm.  Seibert sets boxing in front wheel and tightens up fifth wheel so that I came near wreck several times before I knew what was wrong.  I drove S.W. meeting  Mrs. Reed.  Says peaches all gone.  Order 2 bu oats and 1 of corn IBM.  The roads are all good.  There is large amt. of corn cut up.  Tue went over to library a while at night.  Most clear southerly moderate winds.  Harman reports 50 a broken. Are seeding BC today.  Gobed 9P.

Part cloudy S.2.  Miller came nut went home to wait for paint.  The paint came this morn and I drove down to till (sic)  Miller.  Briggs says will not let me return any surplus.  Get steak Dorsh.  Called at Interurban Sta Manager says did not read our meter last Mo.   Will mail bill next Mo.  Miller painted P.M. most first coat front porch.  I drove E. to woods P.M.  getting home 5.30.  My new pants were sent down P.M.  Tue and Mrs. B went to PM night  Gobed 8.30

Ck. 6.50.  Tues finishes fixing an old rug for Buddy.  Tue  attends Aid meet at McCravys P.M.  Fern N; helping Phebe with dress most of day.  I drove E. to Alexander woods. late P.M.  there is  nothing doing in the  woods.  Got home about 7.  Mostly clear day.  Heavy clear day.  Heavy cloud from northerly at 8 P.M. with lots of wind and dust No rain but good deal of thunder.  a light shower later in night.  .o5.  Gobed 9.30.

Mostly clear.  S.W.2.  Rhoda comes to wash, working till 3 P.M.  Get shave A.M. pd.  Later hitch up and drive up town.  Pay E. Light bill for June 1.89 ck.  Perry Grove has recently resigned his posish with Public Service Co.  I got jag of corn of I.B.M. yest.  they pay 65 and sell @ 75c.  I drove N.E. P.M.  going N. on Anderson road and returning by Ashmore road corn look well up that way- No corn firing as yet.  I got home 7.30  Part Cloud day Showers S.E. P.M.  Heavy thunder in that direction about  3 oclock.  wind northerly at night and cleared off.  Go bed 9.30.

N.E.2.  another change in weather without rain.  Tue goes up later.  I get start to Loxa 9 A.M. going through to farm which look over pretty well.  Cliff at work in B.C. south of house with five teams.  Talk with him while.  Paul and Mr. Cox both sick.  He has four hands hired in  field. has cut say ten acres oats.  Asks me to  send Abbott out - which I did P.M.  Return through Loxa getting home say 1 P.M.getting sheaf oats.  Met Zeke Gilbert.  Toward night drove round by Siberts: he will shoe horse  &c in  morn.  Saw Abbott: Says will go out in morn.  Says Jo Bill now working for Interurban.  Clear day with a steady N.E. whirlwinds.  Lighter at night.  There is no running water in Cossell Creek.  All streams are going dry.  Plenty of water at head wall Loxa Branch.  Tue  and Phebe were up to  hear band in evening.  Fern here during day working with Phebe.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Emmett helping him put up hay.  Clouds up light shower about 1 P.M. with thunder.  More light showers in night.  Order of I.B. late P.M. bu oats and bale threshed timothy which they deliver.  I drove late down Myers house through Wrightsville getting home after 6.  Part cloudy day Strong southwind P.M.  Go bed 9.30.

Cloudy early W.4.  Strong southerly wind all night with light dashes of rain - Not enough to do any good.  I drove S.E. nearly to river AM looking for chickens.  Didn't find any.  I got home noon finding Muggs here, sooner than she expected.  She has four weeks vacation.  Grace and Fern here P.M.  Mostly clear day with high westerly winds.  Old man McGaham died yesterday.  Learn that Sam McPheron is dead at Mattoon.  Tue and girls went up town a while at night.  I  have had bad pain in right side for week.  It worries me.  Got buttermilk at Creamery.  Gobed 10 P

Clear mostly S.W. 3.  Hitch up early.  Tue and girls sleep till about 8.  Tue attends church morning.  Shave self AM.  Had intended to go to ranch or elsewhere AM. but proves to be too hot about 5 P.M.  drove to ice plant for ice and later took drive down by Woodson place.  Corn looks well in spite of the drouth.  I got home 7.30  Roads dry and dusty.  Little signs of rain.  Mostly clear day with strong SW wind.  Go bed 10 P.M.

Cloudy and very threatening.  Heavy black cloud approaching from N.E.  It yielded little rain (05)  The rheumatism in right side which has annoyed me for a week or two so much worse today that keep pretty still.  Toward night I drove SW getting home 8 P.M.  I got three chickens at Louis Songer's 1.00 check.  Part cloudy and threatening but no rain here except sprinkle in morn.  The  corn Emmett planted is up two or three inches.  Corn in country looking well.  Part clear S.W.3.  Go bed 10 PM.

Clear S.#.  Fritz is still working for Dorsch.  I drove down there late P.M.  thinks Saturday morn soonest he can come.  This proves to be about most oppressive heat we have had,  Clear day with fresh southerly wind.  Tue over at Brooks' at night.  Will Ginther and Harry Wright call P.M. to obtain options on Perkins lot.  They didn't get it.  they claim that the new P.O. is to go to old Weber lot on Van B. and 7th sts.  Gobed 10  Tue got letter from Muggs at Jeff Cy: thinks be home July 10.

 Clear.  SW.1.  Tue ironing AM.  I drove round town a little AM but too hot for driving.  Call on Sibert and He with hand take off axles from new buggy and get same ready to ship back to Columbus.  I don't think he followed instructions and I expect to fear about it later.  This has been most sultry day yet.  Mostly clear. light S.W. to N.W. winds.  We need more rain but  no hopes of it soon in the reports.  Tue at Fannie Coons at night.  Phebe out with  Fern.   Get letter from Buddy P.M.  go bed 10.

Clear, E.1.  Get shave of Yates:  Bob Wilton there.  Harman called a few minutes at barn while was hitching up, said he called to see buggy.  Think he is fixing up scheme about hay but said nothing about it.  I would have gone to Loxa if had not felt so badly  Emmett Fritz called a while P.M.  Says will help at any time after tomorrow.  Gets iron bar.  I try to write letter to H.G. S.W.1.  Wrote a hasty letter to Phelps asking advice.  The program today is for me to go to Loxa and rest  of family to dinner at Helens.  I start 9 AM.  Teach Loxa 10 AM. and drove pretty well over place.  Did not meet Cliff.  He does not seem to be doing anything with the clover meadow.  It is ready to cut.  The crops are looking better than average of this season.  Talk while with Cox and start home via Loxa and S. road.  I  saw Mrs. Gaines, Retha's boy was born last Friday.  Hugh putting up fence between  Jones 5a and  our farm.  Get small sack meal of C.H. Jones and reach Helen's about 12.30.  Tue, Phebe, Marie with Charles there and were eating.  I joined them.  the Normal Grocery and adjoining residence burned  2 P.M.  I start home 4 P.M.  the rest follow on 7 P.M. car.  Tue was ordered over to at once.  Rob Mitchell called after I left.  I got home wanting some poles.  He didn't get them.  Clear day light S.W. winds quite sultry but cool night and  and morn.  Jack dog crippled and couldn't go.  Go bed 9.50

Part cloudy, red. S.3.  Hitch up and start Loxa 9.30.  Drove through Loxa Mrs. Gaines says Retha was married Aug. 4 but has just divulged it.  Saw Alva Armstrong and promise to send over at once sack wood plaster for patching Loxa house.  Expected to see Harman shucking in "pond" but they had finished it.  Drove up to B.C. shed.  The  BC is baled and lies in shed on west.  After driving round the field an hour or so drove up to premises and made a stand on Harmans house.  He soon came over and after talking a while about  selling BC at 100.00 said he had to go and take Lola to  Dr. Preston & Co had gone to field and were shucking on south side NE of W 40'.  Preston says they have been shucking to feed and today J.V.H. consented to take a few loads.  My part of their shucking.  I got nearly  a sack from Preston's wagon.  It began to rain and I start home say 1.30 P.M. getting there about 3 P.M.  The rain just lays dust.   Jack went.  We ate dinner S. of house N end B.C.  The roads good.  Clear till toward noon with light drizzle much of P.M. - Over take Geo. Veach & Co. with big drove cattle at Loxa school house.   Muggs painting radiators also upper walk in W.C.  She was out with friends at night.  Gob 8 P.M.

Part cloudy S.!.  Tue , Maggie and Ferd busy getting ready for the function tonight. viz.* Ferd's wedding to Florence Purtill in Mattoon at 7 P.M.  They all went on the 5.15 car leaving me alone with house.  Tue and Muggs got home 11 P.M.  F. & F. left at once for Haskell, OK where they intend to live.  I drove N.E. of town A.M.  Tue got her new new dress of Mrs. Patterson and wore to function.  She got card from Mrs. Eagleston saying might call but she didn't.  Rene and Grace attend wedding but Bert is laid up with injury received last week.  Roosevelt is reported doing well but his case in much doubt yet.  I try the paint P.M. but fear can't do it.\\  Mostly clear day, moderate southerly winds with some signs of rain.  Make pankakes (sic.) for my supper and Jack's and go bed 10 P.M.

Part cloudy S.2.  I find two spokes broken R rear wheel of old buggy.  Tue and Maggie iron A.M.  I drove to Dicewood and beyond: no fungi excepting Clitocybe illudeno which meet in Stoddert's  pasture.  I got home say 11 AM.  There is a teacher's meeting at E.I.S.N. and great crowds are coming in especially on interurban.  Tue takes four of them to lodge just for tonight - all young ladies.  Tue attends RC* at Ed Millars P.M.  Grey Anderson and help put coat plaster on new W.C. and will come in morn and finish.  J.B. Hill filling New Silo as I pass AM.  The  mud is light and will soon be gone..  Mostly clear day with light to high S. to SW winds.  Lightning around at night.  Tues lodgers attended theatre (sic) til late and keep us awake &c.  Gobed 9 lightning nt.

Clear.  W.3.  Kit skinned her back rolling.  Broke strap on harness which repair.  The water leaked out to 1st floor radiators but think slacking up.  Harman phones for nails and roof roll.  Order Andrews to send same Loxa this P.M.   Harman will get nails says P.P. & another man at work at roof Harman says .  Bert's Helen calls AM staying to dinner.  Tue sending Buddy box of a +Ps.  Walter Smith works a while P.M. trying to stop furnace leaks.  He didn't do it, and thinks may have to take it down again.  I drove down to Wrightsville  and return by Normal late P.M.  Clear day with W or NW. wind.  Gobed.9

Part cloudy S.3.  Tue makes fire in the furnace but leaks continue bad. as ever.  I repair girth and drive to  B.P.A.  Talking  a while with Jackson.  Order jag of coal which deliver late P.M.  Can't fill coal room until proposed W.C. is put in.  Mrs. H. over P.M.  Jack and I drive to Dicewood 4 P.M.  Didn't see any fungi.  More burrs than anything else.  Bert's Helen stopped P.M. on way home from Normal is sick.  The road mostly dry and somewhat rough.   Most cloudy P.M. threatens rain 8.30

Tue getting ready for a function which will occur tomorrow.  I hitch up AM but did not drive till toward night when I drove E.  to timber roads very dry and dusty.   The little shower S at night all gone.  I went Westfield Road to Huckabee return N. road.  No fungi anywhere.  Jack went He can'tuse his left hind leg very well yet.  Tue has not heard from Buddy for three or four weeks and is beginning to worry.  Tue kills chicken for friends tomorrow.  Partly clear quite warm.  Gobed 9.30

Clear E. or S.E. have been keeping mare at home for past week.  She gets six ears twice a day and pasture at night.  Never saw flies annoy horses so bad.  After getting paper drive  E. to timber and to river Hill.  Left Jack at home.  He is not getting better very fast.  Tue talking of going out to Helen's to dinner but gets dinner and went out on 2.30 car.  Mort and Kate call an hour or two P.M.  Tue got home about 8 P.M.  bringing some ice cream from Helen's.  Ora Webb called P.M.  Dawson didn't deliver our milk.  Mostly clear day with light southerly winds.  There were a few claps of thunder about 3 P.M. from small cloud S.W. but no rain.  Everyday has been a scorcher for the past two weeks ~  Little air stirring.  The roads are fine and becoming dusty.  Gobed 9.30

Cloudy, light fog.  Tue ironing AM.  I drive S.W. looking for "flux weed."    The mare felt foxy and flies are bad so she made good time.  It tired me out to hold her.  I did not find any of my weed.  Mike Fletch formerly  of Loxa calls to rent farm.   Also (?) Hensley of Humbolt.  Tue deposits oats check at 2nd NB.  Jack and self both getting better.  Toward night we drove E. to scene of his accident last Thursday.  Take mare to Nickles.  Kate Grove and her sister Sarah call this evening.  Mostly clear light southerly wind.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Part cloudy S.W.2.  Tue and self get off for Loxa before 8 AM. driving to Loxa first.  Tue calls at Mrs. Wests and at store.  Pay up Charley Jones for R.H. and afc to date 7.77 ch.  Met Cliff at Loxa and he follows us to farm.  Parker and Plow working on shed.  Harman went to W. side with Tue and Self. I offer him clover meadows to cut for seed for half.  Says will cut new clover S.W. cor of NW 40 about 5 acres for half.  Tue bought chickens of Lulu.  We went out to Cliffs to weigh it.  Harman when struck me at Loxa was on his way to thresh S.  We reach home before noon worn out with  Harman the heat.  One of the hottest day, light SW wind.  H.G.  called P.M. to renew &c.  Mare about worn out when we got home.  I drove to Fritz before dark.  He will work for me Monday.  I put mare in pasture.    Mail check 82.05 to S.H. Record for tile.  Gobed 10 P.M.

The Weather for August, 1912.  Mean daily temperature 73.  Max 92. on 13th, 18th, 19th, 29th and 31st.  Min 46 on the 5th on.  Rain 5.17 in.  thus 1.2 on 9th, 1.21 on 13th, .34 on the 16th and 1.37 on 20.  It rained on 15 days and has been a damp month for August.  Clonchieress 33 1/2 %  Many oats are still un threshed.  Streams are high for season.  There has been much thunder.  The roads have been quite muddy at times.  Corn promises well but much weedy.    The roads at present are fine.  The duration and direction of winds have been - N 2 2/3 days N.E. 4 2/3; E 1 2/3;  SE 2/3; S 6; SW9 2/3; W 4 2/3 and NW1 days  The winds have been light, few winds  storms.  Corn is standing up, grass weeds and trees are making unusual growth.  Oats 25 cts, Eggs 15 young chickens 20c per live pound.

Most clear S.3.  I rubbed R with new remedy last night.  I hitch up but did not feel able to drive much.  Find not so well as I had thought but have pretty good appetite.  Harman came in AM giving me check for my half of oats 1837 1/2 bu on 60 acres @ 25c.  He stated that there would be more for some damaged which he took un-threshed.  Wants to cut second crop for seed.  Tue gets letters from Muggs and Marie.  Both arrived safely at destinations.  Tue called on Mrs. Curd P.M.  I drove down to Grimes corner to water mare P.M.  Am trying to kill the fleas on Jack and he seems better.  Self feel quite poorly.  Have quit taking Starrs meddy. Tue and Mrs. Brooks attend P. meet at night.  Mostly clear day clouding up by night, light rain(.02) and great amount of lightning.  The electrical display lasted most of the night.  Go bed 9.00 P

Part cloudy, SW. 2.  There were lightning and thunder much of night.  We were married 35 years yesterday.  I went up for shave, Brown's , after breakfast today.  settle 30c.  Met Andy Moon at shop;pay him my share partition flood gate 2.14.Ask permish for LaFayette commissioners  to join road line of tile to line to branch which grant.  Rhoda washing.  Harman phones that need more lumber out there., while I away promises to phone same move but didn't.
My trouble not so bad today except for the heat which nearly prostrates me.  Clear day with light SE to NE. winds, heat oppressive.  I hitch up toward night and drive to Fritzs but could not see him.  Tue up to band concert at night.  Go bed 9 P.M.  Mare to Nickles.

Clear, S.3.  Walter got paper.  Oil up and drive to Dicewood seeing no fungi anywhere.  Continue North and West returning by Bond road.  Drove down to crass at Carrall bridge but they have not graded up yet.  I get home time for dinner.  Walter and Marie took their Supper at Park with friends getting home after dark.  Charles went .  Jack dog does not seem to be getting well very fast ~ eats very little  and can hardly walk.  Think his hip broken.  Clear AM.  clouding up toward night with light showers after 10 P.M.  Much thunder and heavy wind along about midnight  Go bed 9.30

Clear.  S.W.3.  Harman phones  that will thresh today wants me to come out.  Feel pretty weak today and can't go.  Did not hitch up.    Maggie left for Columbus at noon and Marie and Chas. at  PM.  Tue went to train with Buddy.  It proves to be one of our hottest days with light SW wind.  Tue got lot of medicine of Dr. Starr which I take till bedtime and think it makes me worse.  My rheumatiz however is better.  Very warm at night with change to cooler before midnight and strong N.E. wind later part of night.  Go bed 9.30

Clear.  N.E.3.  Don't feel as yesterday morn.  My rheumatiz is much better.  Emmett was expected but did not come.  I took meddy all day without much apparent benefit.  Did  not try  to hitch up.  The mare was not out of pasture.  Tue was up town a while P.M.  They have been threshing oats out at place today.  On account of wet weather and consequent delay in threshing will not have much of a crop.  Jack dog does not seem much better than the day after getting hurt.  think the fleas are eating him up.  Clear day N.E.3.  Go bed8.30
