Cloudy. S.2.  Emmett comes 7 AM.  Burns brush, mows yard, took out ashes.  Puts lot wood down cellar and  straightens up in barn till 5 PM. Pd  ck 1.50 M&M work till 3 P.M. when finish and take away their outfit.  Didn't settle.  Emma helps Tue wash &c till 3 P staying to dinner.  Tue got so tired she went to bed.  M &M work on roof and porch floor.  We are well pleased with job.  Total net cost about 75.00  Have three gallons paint to return to Briggs but may use it at Loxa.  Mostly clear day strong southerly wind.  Sharp lightning N & NW at night with dash of rain about midnight.  The warmest day since last Sept. 11.  Gobed 9P

Cloudy SW 3 light rain 7 AM.  also in a little in the night.  Turns colder 7 AM.  M&M came AM and I pay firm  check 21.00 in settlement.  Cold cloudy day.  Strong NW wind.  Went to town for tobacco late PM.  Tue gets letter from each Muggs and Phebe.  Phebe expects to be at home early in June.  Didn't hitch up.  Get bale timothy of Ryan Cr .60  Have just enough coal for a good fire in furnace.  Go bed 9

Cloudy N.3.  Mist.  Tue ironing AM.  Make good all wood fire in furnace.  Hitch up 10 A.  T.W.P.  The Warman children running over and order  P.M.  Shave self P.M. later drive to Andrews' Lumber yard and order two glass for kitchen door at farm 40 1/8 x 10 1/2 half circle at top.  Helen sent butter by John.  I saw JE McGurty this morn : he has been to  French Lick Springs for health.  Tue went to town for book for Journal  She got one but it did  not fill the bill.  Partly clear day with moderate northerly winds  Gobed 9

Part cloudy.  Telephone rang about  5 AM  We could get no response.  Old woman calls selling "numbers" in a quilt.   Tue didn't buy any.  Tue cleaning windows upstairs.  I drive uptown and E a mile.  Several large fields corn E. of town up and  looking well~ the finest corn I have seen.  Mrs. Harman phones Tue about paper hangers.  Reports Mrs. Shrivers sick.  Sent package by P.Post to Phebe to  Mail papers to each of girls.  Roads are getting dusty.  It is  very dry:  Things not growing much.  Cool mostly clear day very day.  The Morties came over 7 PM  Mrs. Curd soon joined us all sp(?) evening till about 9 PM  write 3 &BCo Peoria

Clear NW1  Had thought to go to Loxa early but didn't get off till after 10.  Took kitchen door glass 2 and 3 panes 10x16 for Loxa house.  I pass through Loxa going out  Drove through place to NW 40  where met Harman.  He had quit for noon and rode with me to front which he opened for me.  Think has planted 37 acres I get to Shrieves just dinner time.  Mrs. S had  gone for seed corn.  Jack and self ate our cake at BC shed.  Shrieves has about 30 acres in the ground.  Start home at noon going south and the  sweetwater getting home 3 PM.  Roads dry and  dusty.  Most people busy planting.  Harman has one piece up.  I reached home by Al Latta route  Met McKee boys near Greens  Emma helped Tue today  Tue lost her specs and we hunt for them till dark.  Clear North wind whirlwinds.  Gobed 10

Clear NE 1 Tue and I look for  glasses till 10 oc when she found them in N. Chamber.  Get letter from Phebe she has sent home a porch swing, not yet recieved.  Pay Telephone for Apl. 1.50  I was up town.  Tue went down to Hats  late P.M.  Mostly clear day: light easterly winds.  Not many in for Saturday, all busy planting.  I have not seen Simons since he lost his horse.  Gobed 9

Clear. S.2. white frost.  Ice 1/5 in.  Self poorly today stomach off~~  Bill came early working at wood mostly.  Fixed fences along hill  Cleaned up wood pile and to things in good shape.  .Tue attended RC at Chenowith's PM.  Think ate too many tomatoes for dinner.  Bill carried up coal and wood and grist at 5 PM.  Paid him in full to date 3.00  He works only 9 hours per day now.   Lyndhorst has started a mail order house  style of S.R.& Co.  See ad in Courier.  I did not visit town.  Part cloudy with high southerly wind.  Gobed 8.

Cloudy with light rain.  10.  Feeling better this morning but not up to mark.  It quit rain 7 AM.  I did not feel able to hitch up today and drive.  chilly northwesterly wind all and part cloudy.  I have very little appetite and feel worse than usual.  Tue went up late getting grub.  Pleasant day and good many people hitch in wagon yard which think they have to pay for now.  Gobed 9

Clear. N.W.1.  white frost. Ice 1/8 in.  we heard door slam up stairs in night last.  1.30 AM. and feared burglars, but proved to be nothing more than a latch slippery.  I  had to shave myself again and don't like it very well.  Tue went to church AM.  Boys seem to be figuring on playing ball again at the Library  lot.  I hitch up 3 P.M.  Tue went over to Groves  till night.  I drove to Alexander woods going by Ashmore road crossing to S. road on E road.  Clear day light NW winds.  Self not feeling well.  Go bed 9 P.M.

Clear.  N.1.  Bill and Jo plant their potatoes at Mrs. Curds.  I hitch up and start Loxa about 10 AM.  Mare was very downsy(sic) along road.  I did  not get there till nearly noon.  Harman and Shrievs sowing oats east of branch.  They have only about 15 acres sown.  I drove up through place.  They have got 80 wired up.  Had to go up to gate west of house.  Met Shrine at BC shed.  He went over the east cover meadow with  irri(sic).  It will have to be plowed up.    The S.W. field, 20 a, very doubtful except small piece of timothy.  I took him home and return through Loxa.  Did not see Harman.  He started for his other place soon after I got to shed.  Drove round by  Loxa house but did not stop there.  Get sack meal at Jones  paid 10.  Charley  pays me house rent 6.70.  Talk with Hugh Sidenstricker and  Al Harman.  Stop at Gaines.  Mrs. G. brought the Retha baby out to see me.  They are remodeling their house.  the roads are dry, some rough except gravel.  I got home say 4.30.  Got  new record from Phebe AM.  Jack dog didn't go.  Mrs. Chas. Griffith called P.M.  Mrs. Grove came over at night and Morty later  Gobed 8.30

Part cloudy.  N.3.  Ice 5/8 in.  snow flys most of A.M.  Order ton of coal (nut) from B. Pa &  Co which came 2 P.M.  We needed it badly.  Tue attends Emma Knock funeral P.M. and then went over to Mrs. Curds.~L.D. Norton called signing collector receipt which he had forgotten.  Paul Warman calls leaving horse at shed at night.  I fear will not like new lot of coal.  The house has felt cold all day.  Part clear day snow flying much of day.  License was voted down in Mattoon and a large portion of state yesterday  Gob 8 P.M.

Clear. N.W.2. wh. fr. ice 1/2 in.  Billy Hatton came but didn't expect him.  He works m(?) if day in bottom cleaning up in bottom:  cutting up fallen willows.  Worked a while at wood pile later. and before quitting carries up coal for night.  The new coal does not show up well.  John S. Parker calls an hour or two P.M.  Since Mrs. P. died he is batching.  Bill will come in morn but too wet to spade garden, quits at 5 now. ~  Mrs. Will Stoddert called P.M.  Most clear day light N.W. wind.  Later.  Tue went to town.  The Morties were over 7.30 to 9.30 P gobed 9.30 P.

Clear or nearly so.  light white frost.  H.G. thinks there is not doubt about license this year.  I start to timber at 9.30 taking two bags orchard  and blue grass seed.  Get  Steve Decker to  sow it on ground we have cleaned up.  The other boys work at burning off N. of middle hallow.  found two gaps down in my fence.  Got home at 8 P.M. pretty tired.  Kink and Warren were hauling out ties.  Go bed 9.30 P.M.  Warm with S. wind.  Very dry .  Had good deal of trouble with the fires today clouds up at night and sprinkle rain.

Cloudy tart at 9 AM.  Wind S. sp rain on way   Boys cutting on ridge making wood fence.  O.D. and others worked P.M.  burning brush and helping hang gate near house.  All the cleaned ground is now seeded.  Steve finished sowing the S.W. corner this  AM.  The enclosed field  sown last winter is up nicely but needs rain.  The whole county is suffering from drouth.  Buckeye leaving out.  An occasional peach blossom open - the trees are very full.  Service berry in full bloom.  River getting pretty well down.  Got home at 8 PM.  Gobed 10.45 PM.-

Cloudy S.E.1. Light R. began in night.  Bowles not any worse.  I build a fire in furnace 10.30 AM. to dru off the damp mess.  The atmosphere is loaded with moisture.  A light drizzle all AM does not better things.  It continued to drizzle till say  2 PM.  Meas at 3 P 53 Tue got some "Cod" fish last evening which is too different.  Tue attends RC PM at Dillards with her article on Margaret Fuller.  She  got home 4.30 and later went up town Learn that Ruth Talbot died yesterday  Uncle John died nineteen years ago today.  Cloudy day think sun out once.  SE wind till toward noon when shifted to light northerly.  The Groves were over to 10. P.M.

Cloudy, heavy fog E.2. Supposed would be much colder, but not so.  The cold wave passed a thousand miles NW and North of us.  Get letter from Chickerings and sons regarding old piano. No. 1049.  It was  sold from him factory to Mr. William Savage of Boston Mass.  Apl. 24, 1832.  That was ten years before I was born. Frank Wilson died today.  Harman brought me sack of oats  first time in long time.  I owe him for same.  He drove in to Ruth Talbotts funeral at 2.30 P.M.  Tue attended same.  I hitch up late P.M.  driving up town.  Later got shoe at Evan's pd 50.  Mrs. Curd was over after supper.  She went with Tue to Grove's and elsewhere till after I retire.  Mostly cloudy day light E. to S. wind.  Gobed 9

Cloudy thick fog. S.E.1.  There was light rain about 4 AM. Sham Self did fine job- no blood.  It took rest of AM to oil buggy repair harness and harness mare.  Tue  attends church AM.  We had dinner about 1oc.  By time I got ready  to take drive it began to drizzle.  In driving out of shed about 4 PM. came near wrecking shed and other things.  I drove round by Sanitarium and got home time to miss showers, all rain today .15 in.  Streets very sloppy.  Grass and weeds are growing.  Gobed 9.30

N.2.  Tue was expecting woman to wash.  She phoned she couldn't come.  Miller called AM for ladder.  Says will finish painting soon as weather predicts.  Catharine and Betty Shaffer call to  play an hour or two play an hour or two A.M.  Steve Decker was here wanting work.  He lives at N. E. of 11th St.  Gus got  old shelfing with drawers.  Frank M. Wilson buried today.  Tue has trouble finding was woman.  She mops kitchen P.M.  I walk up town P.M. Pay Charleston taxes at Court House 118.98 which makes our total tax 319.54.  The highest on record I think for us.  Tue spent evening at Groves.  Cloudy light northerly winds 9 PM.

Mc early for "same" and try to see him when passing uptown but didn't.  I hitch up mare A  Mostly cloudy day with easterly light wind becoming southerly.  Gobed 8.30M.   She acts very bad.  Curry her off  She is very dirty.   I went up to Interurban Sta for same.  Saw Latta who has bought house near Sta.  Get same about noon.  I drove south to Phipps and return.  the gravel and other roads pretty bad.  I got back 6.  Mostly cloudy day with easterly light wind becoming southerly.  Go 8.30.

March 1914 Weather

The Weather &c at Charleston, Ill for March 1914.  Mean temperature 41.  Max 70 on 15.25 and 29th Min 10 on 1st.  Clouds 49 1/2 % Precipitation 1.16 inches on fourteen days.  Snow about 3 inches in light falls on nine days  Winds ~ North 4 2/3;  N.E. 3;  E. 2 1/3;  S.E. 1 2/3;  S. 6; S.W. 3 2/3;  W. 4 2/3 and N.W. 5 days.  The precipitation has been light with much damp foggy weather.  The roads are  pretty bad (Mar. 31) gravel roads mushy in many places.  Roads have been worse early in month and were better about middle.  No farming done yet.  Rains have kept people out of their ground.  Grass growing fine in yard and will soon need mower.  Eggs    .  Butter country 30.  Oats Corn  Hogs  .  the wagon yard has been  closed to country people several weeks.  The city can't afford to pay rent on same.

Wrote Theodore Rare St James MO about fungi.  We get two new records from Muggs.  The boys return sash AM with new glass, later Mort put it in.  Tue and Mrs. Curd on the authorities P.M. and they promise to  make boys stop playing on library premises.  I got mare AM drive round town a while View remains of Methodist church and Harryman's warehouse.  Drove to Hatton's P.M.  Bill  working for McNeal.  Took mare to Nickles at night.  Harman and Shreivs came in at night staying  till near 9 oc to consult about the farm.  They are preparing to sow oats will have perhaps 50 or 60 A  Gobed 10.30 P.M.  Talk with Nels Martin he has bought 91 A near church.

Cloudy S.5.  High wind S all night with dashes of rain in night TWP early.  Order mare and drive up to  see Felix about my big loan interest.  Says wait day or two.  Met Hatton who will work PM.  Call I.B.s and look at C seed two grades 10.00 and 11.00 per bu.  Shall need six or eight bu.  Bill worked  P.M. mostly cutting wood.  Repairs fence round pasture.  He will work for Latta tomorrow.  The boys keep off Lin lot today.  Tue went  church with Mrs. Brooks at night.  Harman phones  9 P.M.  He thinks some of sowing oats tomorrow but fears too wet.  It is up to  me to get the seed out soon as possible.  The trouble in bowels has annoyed me good deal today.  Harman has sold disc drill bought of me and will broadcast  oats.  I prefer the drill.  Clear day with strong southerly winds.  Gobed 9.30 P.

Cloudy, light fig.  S.3.  Am dieting on thickened Milk today and think it helps me .  Get horse from Nickles after dinner driving up town:  get sample CS from Janis seed  store but hardly as good as Mitchells although some cheaper.  Order Cliff phones will take care of same.  H.G. calls PM. returns magazine, stayed  quite a while.  I was alone Turies having gone calling 1.30 PM.  I drove south and east of town toward night.  Farmer's  are not doing anything yet.  The roads are good.  Put mare in own barn for first time in several  weeks.  Mostly cloudy day, moderate south wind.  Tue visits Library to look at pictures.  Gobed 9 PM.

Cloudy, N.E.2.  Self not well as usual.  Did not rest well.  Bill came 7 working till noon.  He took out ashes from furnace and cut wood which put in cellar also some pieces old walnut (braces).  It snows most of the day and Bill did not return.  Mrs. Curd was over an hour or two P.M. talking politics.  Tue reading up on RC work.  She was over at library at night.  She is feeling badly:  has been taking some kidney pills.  Cloudy day with some snow 1 1/2 in. north wind  go bed 8.30

KW  Tue attends RC at Dillards.  Bill works P.M. and pay him  un full 1.50.  Shave self PM. doing fine job.  Bill cut up some of worst lumber I am trying to sell.  Will work Monday if Paddy McNeal does not want him.  Pleasant  day but raw and chilly northerly winds.  Bill fills up coal hods and wood box.  Sarah Myers Hall is visiting Mort and Kate.  Tue went over to library at night.  Gobed 9

Cloudy W 2.  There was skift of snow fell early morn and snow flying tr much of AM.  Mort Grove got the paper for us.  Gus  brought us 1 lb. butter AM all some pieces of  chicken which were very acceptable.  Self troubled in bowels and have to discontinue beans &c.  Mort and Kate over P.M.  Part cloudy day with moderate westerly winds.  Gobed 9

Clear.  W.1. get a letter from Phebe  and a package by P.P. for Tue  also Phebe.  Weather predictions are for warmer weather and more of it.  Tue wrote Muggs, AM.  Boys annoy us good playing  ball on library lot running over our garden and  lot.  Their ball broke E. DR window in afternoon stirring them up to extent of  two dollars.  they took sash up to Briggs where it remained all night.  Tue had conniption about it and went over to Groves  till 10 P.M.  Clear day with brisk southerly wind.  I try to trim some grape vines.  Had to give it up.  The trouble with is becoming chronic.  Gobed 9 PM.

S.E.2.  The weather bureau gives hope of warm weather for this week at least.  Receive letter from Phebe AM.  She had gotten packages sent her last week.  I spent several hours sorting over old papers in attic.  Tue  getting ready for Rhoda to wash tomorrow.  Rene phones Tue but she happened to be at Morty's.  Clear and fine much of A.M. but colder after dinner wind shifting to NE and stronger cloudy P.M. with snow flurry sometime in night.  Gobed 9  No Alfred

N.E. 4 ground covered  with "skeft" of snow.  Rhoda's people phone before I got up to say she was sick and couldn't wash today.  Tue went  at it herself after breakfast.  finishing about 2 P.M. when she got ready later went up town with Mrs. Curd to prepare for tomorrow's function.  H.G. called P.M. and engage him to do an errand for me tomorrow.  Gus brought us a dozen eggs  P.M. also brought me some dried apples from Helen.  Mostly cloudy day strong N.E. wind clears off at night.  There was a fine eclipse of the moon from 9 P.M. till 1 AM.  Old fiddlers contest at Opera House at night.  I had intended to go but forgot it.  Gobed  9.30

Clear N.W. wind Maggie and Phebe went to Sunday School.  they went up to Davis with the baby a while toward night.  All therm of them have very bad cough.  I went up and talked with Reub Davis a while at night about sawing up my timber.  He did not give me very much satisfaction ~ wants me to buy interest in his mill ~ can't go down there for a month or so anyhow.  Yesterday I made him same offer as agreement with Comer that is  75% of the proceeds for him  25% to me.  Clear day and chilly.  Baby cough very bad at night.   Gobed 9.30 PM.

White telling him could not take tie contract and deliver on  big time, that is May 30 .  Started to timber about 8.30 getting there about noon.  Rode round on east 40.  Went to Warren and engaged him.  John and Jim to help tomorrow also Riley and Steve.  Bob moving Riley Decker.  Pleasant and roads  pretty dry in places and very rough  River up pretty  high but fordable at Walkers.  gobed 9 P.M.

N.W.  1.  Mostly clear day: moderate westerly winds.  Sent late couriers to Buddy.  Harman called before  5 P.M. giving me check for my share of the remainder corn 30.90.  this finishes corn deal for last year he says.  There is biz. still unsettled however.  Mrs. Curd called to consult about Hat's birthday function and  Tue went over there after supper until after 9 oclock try to make out list for S.R. &Co.  gobed 9.30  Alfred didn't come.

clear, NW wind about 1/3 in. of snow  or hail on ground.  The girls all caught more cold last night.  Baby seems about sick.  Got up in night and rubbed Phebe's chest with coal oil.  Warren Decker came up  sent out lot of tools by him and will go down tomorrow or next day.  Got stray chicken speak to Rueb about sawing my timber.  Cloudy day now N.W. wind snow flying at times.  No word on cow yet and too cold today to  go after her.  Go bed 9 P.M.

Cloudy and snowing N.E.5.  Snow seems to be about six inches deep.  Drifted badly and can't tell much about.  Phebe got away at 5.40 for 5.55 car.  She  soon returns no chance of her to make Havana trip today.  The  Methodist church was destroyed with only $6,000 ins.  It was valued at 22,000.  Cold and stormy most of day with light snow till toward. (sic)  The late coal is half slack and snow.  This makes mud.  Alfred came to chore but employed him mostly digging out  paths.  Will come tomorrow P.M.  Chas still sick.  Godbed 8.30 P.M.

Clear.  NE.2.  Phebe makes another start on 6 car getting far as Mattoon  Can get no farther for day or two.  Order through 436 Same to be sent today.  Phebe gets home before noon.  Mrs. Curd called P.M.  H.G.  went to Interurban Sta for  same toward night.  ~~  Alfred did chores.  I did not get out.  We get yesterday's R.H. today.  The storm was general through middle west and traffic is still  tied up  Phebe will try  H again  tomorrow morning.  Clear day with light N.E. winds.  gobed 9

Clear SW wind.  Broke the coffee mill this morning and tried without success to mend it.  Byers called PM to say that he and Woodrum had been unable to find a place to board down at timber.  There was an eclipse of the sun from 3 PM till sunset.  The  globe - (?) did not come today.  Hat was here toward night.  The Myers girls were over in evening.  I made a batch of candy for Maggie and Phebe.  Clear day  go to bed  10 PM

Clear and fine.  Westerly wind.  School begins again today after a vacation of 10 days.  Get $40.00 for ties of Geo Sefton Agt.  Looke insures dwelling for three years for 600.00 premium  $6.00.  R. Rutherford up pay him for Kirk fifteen dollars.  Helen went home P.M.   Went  down to depot at night.  Sefton paid me for 100 ties.  Went up to  Frank Dunns office at night.  Tue and M & P spent evening at Davis'  Gobed 10 PM  (?) on dwelling for 1,000 for 3 years.

Readers, I have been so busy  that I have not been able to keep the journal up.  I have thought of abandoning this project, but I do enjoy sharing it.  In order to get it caught up I will only put in key points until I get caught up.  If you want to know more about something, please, just send me a message.

2.  Sunday.    Maggie came about 2:30 P.M.  She passed through here on noon big four train got off at Loxa and made a crazy trip home mostly on foot.  Maggie has to leave for Jeff City at 3:40 so stayed up till nearly midnight.  

3.  Monday.  Tue and I  get up and help Muggs off on 3.40 train.  She expects to  arrive at Jeff City about noon.  We return to bed till 6 AM.

4.  Tuesday.  

5.  Wednesday.  Tue went to prayer meeting with Mrs. Brooks at night.

6.  Thursday.    Tue got letter from Muggs.  She arrived at J Cy (sic) all right.Tue over at Groves P.M.  Spends the evening after supper "playing out" some records brought down from Whites.  

7.  Friday.  Go to Interurban Station and pay light bill for Sept. and Oct  $3.80 and mdse. a/c 74 cents.  Take Tue to R.C. at Dr. Fulton's 2 P.M.  Sam Popham is dead today.

8.  Saturday.   

9.  Sunday.Tue went with Mrs. Brooks to hear Robert McIntyre at the Methodist Church who preached here many years ago.

Marvel and sent the note to Tue.    She expects to  finish at Havana in two weeks, is thinking of going out to  see Muggs before coming home.  Mrs. Bell was worse today and she  phoned Tue to come over.  Tue went uptown P.M. getting ham and eggs.  Eggs are 40 c. per doz.  I did not hitch up.  My lips and face some swollen and feeling much worse than usual.  Pay phone 313 for Oct. 1.50  Gobed  9.30

Cloudy N.E. 2.  Misty.  Hatton came working all day at wood pile.  Order "same" fro, J.E. Mc morn, getting it about 6 P.M.  Got sample of early ohio potatoes of Crciu.  Try again to see E.E. Tate but didn't.   Learn our phones will be(g)in 3.30 which did.  Meanwhile I drove down E. of normal and get nice mess of  campertris.  Harman and Shrives here when I return.  They want to rent the farm together and I tell them can have it subject to conditions which will discuss later.  They were in buggy and took out ome pears.  Mrs. Brooks over at night, also Mrs. Curd.  The latter went with Tue and  Helen to band concert.  Much cloudy with easterly winds.  Gobed 9.30

Cloudy. E.1.  Hatton worked all day at wood piling S. of old house site.  I drove up to Dicewood again but met nothing in fungus line.  C.H. Mitchell call P.M.  I drove by E. of Normal and round by Phipps place.  Find  fine mess campertris W. of Phipps~~

Clear and mostly clear day.  Pick and peel basket of peaches for Tue AM.  Tue about sick from washing yesterday.  After dinner we drove out to Uncle John's and got basket of apples.  Drive round by Perrills when came home.  Wrote letter to Sal Shaw of Parils about lot in bottom.  Warm day.  Sprinkle of rain in P.M.  Go bed 8.15

Neal.  Drive uptown fir steak A.M.  Mrs. ONeal called P.M.  Simultanessly peddler calls.  Mrs. Reed came with half bushel fime peaches 70 c  Paul Harman borrows new buggy while his is at shop and I hitch to old buggy driving S.W. to Phipps road getting home for supper.  Mrs. Curd spent evening here.  I retire before she leaves.  Clear with fresh N.E. wind.  Paul Harman and sister are attending Normal.  They drive in every morn.  Gobed 9

Cloudy N.E. 2  Light rain in night to 7 this morning .54.  It quit rain before 7 AM.   I  hunt up Bill Hatton finding him at Joe's.  He will work for for me tomorrow.  After dinner Tue went up town and to Hat's and I decide about 2 P.M. to go to Loxa.  Pay J.H. Pinnell a/c 16.95 ck.
I went N. Jack went,  Saw C.H. Jones.  Oakley moved out about Sept. C.H.J. and  self decide not to rent to  Theodore Arnold who wants the house, until make repairs my be not then.  I went on up through place.  Much seed in SW clover.   Corn does not promise much.  I drove to house and to front gate but found gate out of order and return through
loxa.  Four calves, unknown, pasturing on  S. end.  Darling has moved to J.O. Linder place.  I got  home after seven oclock.  Mostly cloudy day with N.E. wind  Go bed 9.

N.1.  Bill Hatton came before 7 AM. and goes to work allover place.  Helps hitch up.  I take she to Evans for repair.  Pay Nickles Bro. a/c 8.50 ck.  They are building big stable on site of Sam Rays old barn.   Call at Andrews and think can get coal to send @ 2.90.  Bill cuts  old cherry (Gov Wood)  SW. of house.  It has beeb there 30 years.  PM. he cut up two willow trees that had fallen across the branch, took trash &c. out of ditch on 5th St. and cut up old kindling.  Pay him in full 1.50 ck.  We will come Monday.  Learn that Jake Daizy is dead to be buried tomorrow.  I am off in my feed and made batch mush at night clear mostly with Northeasterly wind  Go. bed. 9.

Clear W. 1.  After getting the newspaper Tue and I plan to take a little drive but decide to let it go till after an early dinner.  Mrs. G came in before we ate, disarranging everything.  Morty came later and both stay the P.M. till nearly 6.  Tue very much disappointed.  I left alone about  5.30.  Drive up to to T. line on J.B. Hill road, west to next road and nearly a mile north past She(?) Popham's where they are building a road of crush stone.  I return by Watsons and south road.  Crop look some better than a month ago not much however.  Mostly clear day light variable winds.  I got home 7 P.M.  Gobed 9

S.E.1.  I didn't sleep much last night - sour stomach and found trouble.  I drove over to see Hatton but he is working on section.  Paul Harman brought in old bureau and took out jag of old lumber ate dinner.  They are going to put a new floodgate accross branch at road.  Tue got a letter from Muggs.  None from Buddy.  Will look for home about Wednesday.  Tue went to Mrs. Brook's 2 P.M.  I stop there for her later and we drove down to Rhoda's and by many devious streets down by Osgood place and home at  6 P.M.  We met Dr. Byres and wife S.E. of town.  Tue went over to see Mrs. Curd at night who has recently returned from Colorado visit.  Gobed 9.

Millers AM. to employ him.  He will come tomorrow and repair plastering &c charges 25 c. per hour.  I find patch of campestiss E. of Normal - too old but we have them for dinner.  The Mariesors returned from their Hindsboro visit AM.  Skinner brought them in surry.  Order 3 sacks of wood fiber plaster from Andrews which they deliver P.M.  I drove down to see Emmett but saw only his wife.  He is working.  O ur yard needs mowing.  Walter made a start on it P.M.  Tue got letter from Muggs.  Mostly clear till  late P.M.  Light sprinkle rain at 6 - 7 P.  My bowels get no better and fear will have to call in Doc.  Take small (/) at night.  This seems to be the only meddy in house suitable.  Gobed.9

Part cloudy N.E.1.  Slept fairly well after 1 AM.  Tue got up 4 AM to get me some milk.  My flux seems much the same.  Rhoda washing.  Miller came early.  Hall Record called with bill which did not pay quite yet.  Harman calls about noon but did not stay long.  He wants to turn cattle by corn to S.W. clover.  I did not consent but may do so under conditions.  I feel better P.M.  Have taken little meddy or food: have lived on thickened milk mostly.  Rhoda ironing P.M.  Miller finishes plaster in cellar but as I expected balked(?) at porch piers, fear will have to tear out much of lower part front porch.  Felt so bad did not hitch up.  Walter and Marie drove out to Helen's toward night getting home about dark.  Mostly clear day sprinkle rain AM.  Gobed 8.30

Cloudy S.2.  Thunder 7 AM and light rain.  Mostly cloudy day with occasional light rain also some thunder and showers around   Rain here .31 in.  It will help but we need more.  Wind S. getting NW before night and cooler.  I hitch up late P.M. drive round town a little.  Rain didn't make much mud.  Too cold for things to  grow much.  Tue spent evening at Groves.  Strong northerly wind all night.  Mare at Nickles 1st for long time.  Gobed 10.

Cloudy mostly N.4.  Mare from  Stable 8 oc.  Get shave of Yates Brown owe.  Tue writing to girls.  Expects Buddy Friday  and Phebe Sunday.  I take trip S.W. to get Parker and Hatton.  Parker came after dinner and monkeys  with old screens all P.M.  He went down to BPAs for screen wire, and did not do much.  Emmett says will help all I want in a day or two.  I drove late up by Stodderts.  Went over in Dicewoods.  There has not been rain enough to help much.  It but little more than laid the dust round town.  The roads are fine.  Clear day.  Wind N.W.4.  Bradleys have them new auto.  No word from my buggy order. was rec.  May 13.  I get home 6.30 go bed 10.

Clear. N. 1.  Phone Sibert to come for old buggy to set tires.  Mrs. Toups washes 1st and works all day at cleaning setting and kitchen.  Bill Hatton worked all AM.  Cut some wood and went with me to cemetery.  Parker worked all day at screens.  Think he will make a weeks work of it if possible.    Phelps SH buggy has been shipped.  Get  bill today.  One of hot days and clear with SW wind 3.  Bill Hatton called at night.    Wants to renovate back house at Loxa.  I leave mare at Nickles and may visit Loxa in the morning.  Warren called a while on front porch about noon.  Gobed 9.30

Parker came and crowded in another half day.  I spent good deal of time hunting for Hatton.  He will do Loxa closet Saturday.  I was over to see Sibert AM.  He will set up new buggy in my shed.  It was shipped last Friday.  One of hottest days to date clear with fresh W. wind.  Harman phones at night.  Seems to be  discouraged about the drouth.(sic)    Think pretty general.  Tue over at Mrs. Curds at night.  Mare at Nickles.  Go bed 10 PM

W.2.  We  go out to cemetery early - before 7 AM. with flowers.  Getting home 8.  Tue went to 11:30 Big 4 train to meet Buddy but she did not come till nearly 3 P.M.  We got letter from  Phebe yesterday saying she had decided to stay another week and will not be  home till about  June 8.  Harman was in 4 P.M.  bringing sack of corn and two bush. oats.  Mrs. Grove was over soon after Buddy got here.  Tue gave me  "jacking up" because I looked at an old lady and her daughter.  This is the warmest day to date and the heat has about floored me.  Mostly xlear clouding up toward night sprinkle rain 8 PM.  Lightning with very distant thunder ten oclock and later.  Gobed 9.30  P.M.

Cloudy N.W.2.  Cloudy all day with  moderate northerly winds.  I hitch  up AM driving up for  coal oil and potatoes.  Mrs. Grove was over P.M.  Tue finishes her cleaning in dining room and parlor.  I drove 4 P.M. to  Wrightsville and beyond.   Saw some good chickens but didn't try to buy any.  Met John King on road home: says there was big fire SE of his place last night.  I feared it was at the ranch.  I got home 6 P.  Chilly day time in the country.  Most of corn is planted but little of it is up. yet.   Oats are very small and thin but good color.  Garden stuff not doing anything,  I got lot of white oak leaves which will try on my mouth.  Had good furnace fire all day.  Gob 9.30

Clear N.W.2.  Harman phones early.  Says is through planting corn yesterday.  Will get ready  for B.C.  Mrs. Harman came in 10 AM putting her horse in barn while she attended a market of Loxa church people.  I drove over to Jo Hattons AM  but could not find Bill.  Buy chicken at church market 85 c.  Met Jack Scott up town and he talks a  while in buggy.  Later I drive out far as Watsons returning S. road.  Mostly clear day light variable winds.  Tue  over on back St at night.  I  decide the "oak extract" too strong for me.  Go bed. 10 P.

Coudy.  SW. 2.  Tue did not get up till after 8.  She did not go to church.  Duval's boy brought our paper.  The old mare would not leave pasture until noon when I hitch up.  Late P.M. to look the crops.    Went up by J.B. Hills, E. on  Tp. line to Anderson road. and then home.  The prospect not encouraging.  The earliest corn is about two inches high.  Oats are small and not growing.  A good rain would change everything.   The dust is getting deep in ruts in roads.  Cloudy day light southerly winds.  I got home 6.30 PM.  Tue and Mrs. Curd went down to Hats evening.  Light rain about 8 P.M. Clear S.3.  I don't know but what I am getting worse-can't get better.  I got hitched up driving up town.  Got lot of stamps . at P.O. and mail letter to H.G. Phelps with 58.50 check for buggy.  I soon drove home.  John Simons, he had just called to see Dr. Patton, called P.M. and talked a while, says has cleaned out our fence row west of him.  Tue busy most of  day cleaning in D. Room. I went up toward night and got sack of corn and bale of straw at Mitchell's.  Tue spent evening at Grove's.  Self take a B.M. pill.  Clear day fresh southwind [sic]  gobed 10

Patton died last.  Harman phones has about 35 acres corn to plant wants me to come out.  Can't do it.  Tue drawing party today alone P.M.   and drove to see Ray Bennett getting home after 6 about time Tue.  Ray will help me all forenoon if needed. Tue went over to Mrs. Curds after supper.  Part cloudy day with fresh to strong southerly wind.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Part cloudy.  Slept fairly well but still carry pain on right side with some fever.  Rhoda wash AM and worked PM at cleaning.  Ray came  and cut wood for an hour pd. 10c.  I went up early and get shaved.  Feel unusually tough AM.  This the hottest day to date.  Mrs. Grove and Mrs. Heeb called P.M.  I drive late P.M. to country N.W.  I went north to town line W to Pophams S. to R.R. and home S. road.  Many people  planting corn -  some breaking.  The roads are very dusty.  Some clouds today.  Bureau predicts  rain not many signs here.  Mostly clear with strong southerly wind.  Tue worked most of day and went to bed early pretty tired.  Gobed 9.30

Clear mostly S.2.  Had high fever all night didn't sleep much.  Emmett cleaned up site of old house and quit at noon Pay him up in full check $6.75 will get his wood away Monday if possible.  I felt very poorly all day and took big dose oil about.  Ate nothing much during day - very sore throat - Drove up town AM. but didn't move round much P.M.    Tue out a while go bed 8.30 some cloudy P.M.

Mostly cloudy. S.2. Some better this morn and ate some breakfast.  Drove up for paper.  Tue  went to church.  I am trying to decide on a buggy from H. G. Phelps.  Sprinkles rain several times during day.  I drove down by hog farm after 3 P.M. very light shower sent me home.  Mort and Kate were over P.M. till near night, after which Mrs. Curd called till about 9 oc.  It threatened rain many times today but did not lat the dust heaviest about 8 P.M.  Go bed 11 P.M.

clear mostly S.2.  Tue cleans house some alone  upstairs.  Trial of Chas Fritz and other boys did not come up.  Threatening weather all day.  Heavy clouds with thunder N at 8 AM  Thunder NW 4 PM. with sprinkle rain here wind S to SW. about 4 PM  I drove down by Woodson place returning by Wrightsville.  The roads are good  getting dry and rain is  needed.  Several have planted corn.  Have felt slightly better today not enough to encourage me much.  Harman phones that planter does not drop regular and will get  a grader today for his seed  corn.   I got  another letter from Phelps today but have not yet scketched(sic) buggy.  Read catalogues of books at night.  Gob. 9.30

Clear S.3.  Helen Hildreth called a while AM on her way to the Normal.  Tue attended the Rankin Funeral P.M. with Mrs. Brooks.  At night she went with Mrs. Curd to concert at Normal.  I hitched up about noon and after Ray got shores done He went with me up town.  Pay A.G. Frommel a/c to date 12.30 check.  Will Campbell 35 cts cash.  Got some eggs Helen left at IBs.  went to P.O. no mail.  Drove out far as Huffamns Ray going.  Meet Harman going home.  He had bought a pump at Olivers my a/c.  I did not tell him to.  Clear day with high southwind.  Was surprised to find the roads dry most of the way.  He supposed the mud deep.  Tue got home 10 oclock.  Gobed 10.

Clear, light white frost.  Went to s(?) Rays in morning to look at house to ride but did not see one I would like to try.  Measure up wood on yard.  there is just about  8 1/2  cords.  Gueney wants half a cord tomorrow morning.  This is about the first spring day we have had.  Mostly  clear with light south wind.  The ground  is frozen pretty solid on N. side of house.  Kates Myers and Davis over P.M.  9.30 ~~
