Clear, Smokey, Brisk S. wind. Very heavy smoke all day, otherwise would probably have been clear. It is supposed to come from fires in southern Illinois and MO and Ark - has been so for over two weeks whenever wind was southerly. Mrs. Young didn't come to wash today. Comer was up and had kind of a squaring up with him. Snider called morning says Fan* is sick came for Dr. Pay Comer $75.00 and settle bill at Wrights for him 32.20. Ed Eastin and wife have gone down in country for few days. Tue gets wood box in house. Strong SSE. wind all day. Gobed 9.45 P.M. Baby cried till nearly midnight.

Smokey. Wind S. Snider called this morning. Fan's baby born last night was dead. Took Tue and baby down there* forenoon, getting home at noon. P. Snider brought Tue and baby up at night. Sell Farrell lot of posts and fencing. Had to come home with Phebe. Maggie got lost, but found her at Wentz. Lean that Ark hunters will be home this week. Basier got home a day or two ago. Dark smokey day with south wind. gobed 9.30 PM
*Fan lived in the house high on the hill just before the Lake Charleston entrance. It is still there, at least it was last time I was out that way. The house was known as the Blakeman house. You used to see that there were steep, steps from the house down to the road. My Grandmother always told me Fan fell on those steps when she was pregnant and she lost the baby. There is, however, no mention of her falling in this journal.

Nov. 16-18, 1887 in Charleston, IL
16. Wednesday. 6.30 A.M. 45. 65. 45.
Hazy, Smoky strong S. wind. Mrs. Dickenson comes to iron. The apple trade not very good. Some folks complaining about the quality. Tonight there are 95 Bbls left. Grand Jury in session Large number of witnesses over from Mattoon on liqour biz. Geo. Weber called at Store. The smoke was very thick today wind S. and S.W. change to N. toward night and Smoke cleared away. Engage Mr. Albott B. to work tomorrow. Tue and self both have toothache. Gobed 8.30.
17. Thursday. 6 A.M. Ther. 27. 45. 32.
Clear, wind N. Father's birthday. Buy him hat and hankerchiefs. John Gucing got killed on Narrow Guage R.R. last night or the morning. Abbot comes to work some after 7 A.M. Chopped up kindling wood, patches roof and piles posts. Will help tomorrow morning. Mrs. Young was to help Tue today but will come tomorrow. Ezekiel Easton finishes hauling wood, has brought up in all. Cord I owe him 11.24. Riley has brought up 116 oak posts from which I have culled 10. Pleasant day N. wind dusty gobed 9 P.M.

Clear. Abbott comes about 7 A.M. Pulls carrotts and beets and puts sawdust round the house quitting at 3 P.M. Pay him in full 1.40. Pay Carnes old a/c .50. Jo Liston's Carriage Shop took fire about 4 P.M. but was soon put out. Went out to coal shaft toward night to see (?) Gannaway. Father stayed at store most of day, bis. dull. Took back Bill Hills sacks. Clear day but very smokey . Wind S.W. Self not feeling very well. Phebe's right cheek swelled, think mumps. Gobed. 9 P.M.

Clear wind S. Drove out to coal shaft after breakfast then to Comer's to Janesville, Linder land and back home at 4.30 P.M. Seph McClasky went with me. Roads good. Fresh S. wind all day, cloudy toward night. Tue and girls up at Davis. Go bed 10.30 P.M.

Clear but clouds over and rained a little about 9 AM. Mrs. Young came to wash but went home on account of the rain. Wind changed to N.W. before noon getting cooler. Comer was in P.M. we went out to Coal Shaft. Got another lumber bill from Cumming. Rec. letter from Brunen saying will be here in morning to look at switch ties. Council began today and good many people in town. Gobed 9.30 P.M. Kate Perrill and friend call at night. Sold Shackleford some old lumber.

Clear. Wind, about N. Met Bruner up town went daown to switch ties. He seems well pleased with them. Drove down to Kickapoo before dinner. Riley Easton brought up a load of posts which don't suit me very well. Trade dull today. Clear day wind S.E. toward night. Mrs. Young washes. Mrs. Feagan over in evening. Tue not very well non self. coudn't sleep. Drank ten for supper. Phebe crys good deal in night. Go bed 9.30 PM

27. Thursday, 6 A.M. Ther. 24. 58. 37. Clear E. Wind. Rutherford came with load of old lumber in morning. Snider in P.M. Mrs. Young came and washed bul. clothes charging 50 c. which goes toward rent. Seph helps pile load lumber. Crass helps on load toward night. Gobed 10 PM
28. Friday, 6.30 AM Ther. 38. 65. 50.
Clear. White frost. Snider, MClasky and Rutherford each had load of old lumber. Easton brings me load of wood. Engages Bill Halton to cut my wood next week and put in woodhouse. @ 1.50. Get return from B & L of Bbl wh withdrawn. No word from apples yet. Pleasant day S wind Kate Myers over at night. Gobed 10 P.M.

Clear. Baby feels much better. Sprinkle of rain in the night and turns colder. Wind gets in north and snow flying most of the P.M. Apples and Quinces from Donay arrives. No.2 apples don't suit very well. Receive dispatch from Donay saying will ship Monday. Wire him to substitute. Comer in town and whole gang. Snider hauls a load of lumber which is about the last. Go to bed 10 pm. Clear night.

Clear. Maggie and Phebe go to Sunday School. Clear and cool, E. wind. Went down to tell Mrs. Deckerman not to come tomorrow as Mrs. Young will wash for us. Phebe went with me. Go to bed 10 P.M.

About clear. Baby cried good deal in night with supposed earache. She tries to say Maggie and Phebe first time today. Got shoes for Maggie and Phebe at Musieles, Maggie begins setting down family expenses. Saw Mrs. Young this A.M. Says he has returned from Terre Haute. She promised to come and wash some for Tue Wednesday. There was a fire last night which burned up Shackleford's team which Seph had been using. S. P Gary delivers winter. 40 Posts and 240 ft. fencing L. Dunbar talks while in P.M. Mrs. Dickenson washed. Mrs. Ed Easten got home this morning. Mostly clear day, wind N.W. Gobed 9.30~
