22.  Friday.  5.30 AM.  Ther.  75 92. 76.

Cloudy southwind, Mary Davis stayed all night last night with Maggie.  Get 25 sacks of McCarty and start for ranch getting there before  noon.  Riley cutting sprouts.  John helping somebody thresh.  I look round in Bennett Hollow for fungi a white and start home at 5.30 used up with  the heat.  Went to bed without going to store too tired to sleep.  9.30

23.  Saturday 6 AM ~ ther.  78. 98. 82.

Clear S. wind, Lay round house all day.  Hottest day for several years.  Clear and blazing hot all day.  Can't stand this kind of weather  Gobed 9 PM  Uncle John were in to dinner.  Settle with E Fritz 1 day too much.

 Clear northerly wind.   I notify E light people that dont want them to put up pole in front.  They refer me to whom I didn't see.  Talk with Charley  Ricketts about it at Post Office  Start to Loxa 9 AM.  Talbott finished cutting oats at noon  I went down to see Gilbert about hay  He offers me 30.00 for north piece, and I decide to cut and put up whole thing.    Talbott will begin in morning on north piece.  Retha still sick with earache  Jo and May took her to Charleston early this morning.  I took Jo over to his hedge cutting and start home about 2 P.M. didn't eat any dinner.  Gobed 9 P.M.  It didn't rain at Loxa last night.

Clear N. 1.  Talk with Colby at office before starting to  Loxa get to  Gaines noon and eat dinner.  Talbott cutting north hay Harry and Sam Owens helping also Jo.  Downey and Talbott kids there while P.M.  Reatha still crying with her ears.  Talbott and I drove whole meadow and I decide to sell it if I can at 8.00 and pitch it on the wagon.  I went up with him on his way home  to Morris Bungnens and beyond, and  got home at 7 P.M.  I was up town a while at night.  Clear day with light northerly wind   Blackberries are very plentiful and selling at 20 cts per gallon

Foggy early AM.  Leman Circus in town big crowd but said to be their show Maggie and Phebe with Rairden.  Hitch up horse and Tue drives P.M. after which she and Buddie [Marie] went up to Sniders.  He brought them back about dark and Phebe went home with him staying all night.  First lot (lot C) Cecropias began spinning today.  About 44 days old.  Partly cloudy day Gobed 1130 PM

21.  Tuesday.  5.30 AM.  Ther 62.

Cloudy SW wind 3  Mrs. Cunningham washed.  I bought half a ham at Mitchells 1.20  It cleared off 9 AM.  I went out Gaines after dinner.  Went to Loxa before going house  Drove up on W. side  8V. as far as old orchard returning to Loxa where I saw young Gilbert  He decides not to take 5 a piece at my price but will look at N. piece tomorrow.  C.  Talbott cutting oats and thinks will finish before noon.  Mrs. Gaines gave me  1 1/2 gal blackberries.  Ruth Talbott there.  I did not see Joe.  He was working for Talbott.  I drove round oat field  they are not very heavy  Talbott thinks will make 40 bu per A   I got home 7 P.M.  Partly clear day with SW wind  Clouds up toward night  and short thunder shower after dark.  they are putting up big telegraph pole in front of house which we don't like  Gobed  8.30 P.M.

August 1-17, 1902 in Charleston HIGHLIGHTS

1. Friday.

Buy some tools at Yellow Store square 90  Level 70  File nails &c and start for ranch about 8 am.  John Simons grunting.  I got whip last time down  I drove  to river to water horse.  The stream is not fordable at Handley's Ford.  I go tangled up in the brush on point could hardly get out.

2. Saturday.

The Normal summer students mostly left today.  they have began moving the Maples.  Have it south about 20 feet which is near half way.

Miss Ford left P.M.  Maggie had visitors at night.

5.  Tuesday

[Coming home from a day at the ranch]  Had to face storm of wind and light rain for last two or three miles coming home.    The boys   Jim Riley   Steve & Ike began on shed at noon and had posts all up when I left.  Kentuckian rides with me to 5 Mile house.  Helen and Marie went to Loxa on local to stay all night

6.  Wednesday

I started for ranch about 10 AM  getting there noon time.  Boys had got their posts out of the woods and up.  They were nailing up strips and putting up plates all P.M.  Think will get rafters up tomorrow  [I get home] before dark.  Tue had been feeling bad all day and found her in bed.

(6)  We decided yesterday to add another section on N. end of shed making it 42 ft instead of 35.  Jo will go to work at Shed at Loxa fixing roof and stripping.

7.  Thursday,

Tue felt badly all night and I called Dr. Patton in morning.  I  lost my  knife Tuesday and bought a new one at Yellow Front today.  I start for ranch about  10 AM.     The boys had the rafters up and were eating dinner.  They side up gables and nail on rest set of strips P.M.  B.C. looking pretty well.

[Heads home]  roads are dry but rough S. of  Five Mile.

Tue spent rather bad night and I had too go to  barn for meddy for her  Dr came 8 AM  Tue had a bad spell about 6 PM and does not feel as well as she did in morning.

Tue had Dr. Patton this morning.  

10.  Sunday

Tue got up and helped with breakfast and went back to bed and felt very badly all day.  She has symptoms of the bloody flux, otherwise I intended to go to ranch.

Tue feeling better, didn't have Dr. today.

Mare doing better.

13.  Wednesday

Tue not feeling as well and did not get up.  I feel very badly all morning; think too much coffee.

Tue up today at dinner [lunch time]  Start out to Gaines 2.00 P.M. came back and started again.  Stop at Fair Grounds looking for mushrooms with Clark.  Find Lepiota Morganii lycperdons. and A cauepectuis  I got to Gaines after 4 P.M.  Jo came up while I was there is mowing weeds in corn.  The rest of the family gone hunting grapes get home 6.30  Cow got out today, Mrs. B got her.  Tue got up P.M and think is improving slowly.

Tue got up to breakfast and remained up most of day.  Self feeling badly.

My fountain pen filled by Geo. W. Hustland first time  I have used it: see June , 2. [his birthday- I can see the difference in the writing in that entry.]  Went down down to Wrightsville P.M.  Tue was up all day and feeling better.  Self felt badly all day.  Drove  up town at night.  The Salvation Army have a tent up at 3rd and Madison with big crowds at night.

Self feeling worse than usual than usual this morning.  Was up town at night after steak and tobacco.

Mostly cloudy S.E. wind.  Tue kills two of her chickens for dinner.  I went out to Jim Warren for cabbage and tomatoes.  Drove up to Decker getting fine mess of Plutuis cerviness   Stop at Fair ground getting seven large puffballs.  Florence heree too dinner.  She is going too  Seattle on visit soon.  I drove P.M. down by Mat Browns place.   Find Ledpita brocenus near Parkers place and  unknown Psolliolta near Mt Zion School house.  I return by Billy Browns and M.Zion, getting home about dark.  There was light sprinkle  11 AM.  and it clouded up again P.M. with thunder all round.  Gobed 9 P.M.~

Clear, NW. wind.  Tie up rest of tomato plants  Some of first cecropian worms getting ready for them.  Second molt 11 days old about 3/4 in long bright yellow turning brown.  More of the eggs hatched this morning.  A cheap circus brings quite a crowd to town.  Trade good Warren and Chut bring each another load of ties.  Grocery Stores decide to close tomorrow at noon.  Learn that Bill Meyers has sold his butcher shop  Clear day with northerly wind  Phebe stays all night at Davis  go bed 11 PM~

Clear wind S.  Pretty good crowd in town considering there was no celebration  Most people went to Mattoon or elsewhere  Tue went up to Oakland with Hat at noon returning at 5 P.M.

Clear south wind.  Thought to get early start to Loxa, got ready by 7,30 AM. but did not get off till about 10  Ate dinner at Gaines.  Glenn and Ruth Talbott there P.M.  Jo cutting in south piece.  Very warm day.  Met Charley Talbott on way home says will help me about meadow.  I drove down through Loxa to get Tues gloves.  Hen and Ora drove to town ahead of me.  Shirley rode to store with me.  Seems to be out of humor.  Mostly clear day with fresh SW wind  I got home .6 oclock.  Tue got message from Phebe today, relieving her mind  muchly.  Gobed 9 PM

Clear light southwind.  Drove up to Decker Park A.M. looking fungi.  Rather dull n town today.  Most of the people gone elsewhere.  John Simons and family were up.  I drove SW of town P.M. looking for fungi.  Find a few puff balls.  Lepiota Margariri coming up in fields.  Try a piece for supper, and had case of diarrhea most of the night.  Tue spent evenings at Mrs. Knocks.  Mort and Kate and Mrs. Baird here a while in evening.  they are excavating for Carnegie building  the excavation will extend from Eastin house north to old Davis house  Gobed 10 P.M.

Cloudy and raining southwind.  Rain began about midnight or after being in light showers.  Thunder about 8 AM.  Sign of moderate weather to come.  Rain all day wind getting north P.M.  With sleet after dark.  Spent long time today sorting papers and looking for Shirleys old lease which I didn't find.  Was up town toward night getting home 6 P.M.  Gobed  10 PM

Trim covered with with ice drops: Chickens about frozen.  We have 8 or 10 chickens.
Cloudy early but clears off.  The storm quit in night   Strong north wind all day.  It was the worst storm we have had in years and the first  cold wind we have had this season.  Perhaps two or two and a half inches of snow fell.  I spent most of day with furnace which had to run full capacity to keep house warm..

Mostly clear E. wind.  The snow did not disappear yesterday.  Mrs. Smith came abut 7 AM. to iron.  She works till 5 P.M. raking off leaves. &c.  Wilton has heard from buggy axle.  It will be here in a day or two.  I ate too much dinner and went without supper.  Felt badly all P.M. and night.  It is reported that there are several cases of small pox in town.  Sat and read Sunday R.H. in basement   Go bed 10 P.M.

Talbot get tickets.  Jo has 14 tickets 334 bu at 56 and 94 5/7 @ 55 = 428 5/7 = 239.14  Garrison pays me rent to 14 inst. check.  Florence Gaines at home sick.  Shirley not quite done shucking corn  Capt Tillotson called P.M. to see me but I was not here.  Grows some cooler before night.  Cloudy day Northerly wind.  Roads good.  Gobed 9 PM

Partly cloudy, hazy, Easterly wind, white frost morn.  Tue and self buy some oysters for the Col and start for his house about 9 AM  old mare made break on Madison St breaking up shafts, buy new pair at Wilton & G costs me 3.00  The Col. better this morn.  Gaines came in with part of a load of straw.  Will be in again tomorrow.  Simons and Warren brought two loads corn 60-50 sold to Griffin @ 60.  Shirley brings in Linders check for balance of his corn 776.56  They think there is error somewhere but I fail to find it for certain.  Buy Warrens grey horse for 80.00 and he will bring him up tomorrow or Saturday.  Hannah Marshal here  at night.  Turie over at Groves till bed time.  Light cloudy day E to SE light winds  Farm's returns so far think the farms have yielded in money about same as last year  Gobed 10 PM

Clear light SE wind.  Self sore throat.  Worse this morn has been coming for several days.  Jo Gaines in with anther small load of straw.  While he was in house his team & was tore off both hind wheels, breaking shaft off at collar.  I spent most of the day trying to find way to fix it and finally order entire new axle through W.&T.   Tue and Helen went down to H.Gs. toward night finding him much better Simons and Warren did not come in with wood.  I figure up Shirley corn tickets for sure getting it about same as Linders check.  Mostly cloudy day E & SE wind.  Phebe attends dance at night with Bres???  Gobed 9 P.M.

Mostly cloudy. Southwind.  Jo came with small load straw taking out four joints of 15 in sewer tile for well at Loxa from Andrews @ 30 c per foot.  I went over to Loxa 11.38 AM returning 1.12 P.M. Settle with JD Linder for balance corn  779.14 Shirley 239.14 Gaines in two checks 777.56 and 240.72  Deposit 777.56 at State Bank KG a/c 240.72 at 2d Natl C.G.  Shirley raised 3663 bushels on about 130 acres.  J.W.Gaines (heard) raised 1373 50/70 bushels partly estimated on about 47 acres.  Warren and Simons brought about cord of wood and grey horse which did not pay for today.  Cloudy day mostly with southerly.  Indications of rain.  Was up town most of PM.  Wilton ordered axle yesterday.  Paid W.M. Scott (Bill)  14.40 Ins. on house and furniture  Cloudy day southwind.  Light rain after dark  Gobed 9.30 P.M.

Cloudy and colder wind N.   Mrs. Rogers ironed, washed yesterday  Manifold sawing wood will finish in day or two  Tue puts up stove in front room.  Made exchange of bonded whisky with F Shiness & Co remitting balance.  Had mess of puff balls for supper which we thought did not agree with us.  Milt drove Uncle John cattle up today and stays in town till 10 PM.  (?) very a(?) to rent south end of my place fencing and cleaning up for first crop.  Think will let him do it.  Mostly clear day with N wind  Gobed 10.30 PM.

Clear Northerly wind.  Maggie started to Champaign when she expects to take Library Course.  Bid her goodbye at 11:38 train.  Get shave AM.  Drove out to Gaines' PM. 2.30  Joe still culling corn.  Shirley bulking down his B.C. began this morning.  Jo will work for Pat Downey tomorrow changing.  Clear A.M.  N.E. wind but turns colder about 2 P.M. with N.W. wind.  Strong and mostly cloudy P.M.  I started home 5.30 P.M. taking tomatoes onions and sack of potatoes.   Sent HAB premium list of fair which begins tomorrow.  Seems to quite a stir at F.G. today  Mrs. Gaines says she is thinking of going away on visit leaving Jo to "batch"  Gobed.  8.30 P.M.

Clear, SW2.  Smith says he will cut my oats soon as ripe.  Pay Jubal for work on yard this week.  80c.  Jo came for rake but did not see him.  Get Roan shod at Hosteleters paid 75.  Take Maggie to 11.38 train to go to Loxa to stay a  day or two .  This about the warmest day we have had.  Self about prostrated by the heat.  Start to Gaines 4,30 P.M. Find he has most of meadow raked.  Rake broken.  Drive down through Loxa  Shirley will loan hayrack.  Met  Doroney, says will help us tomorrow.  Get home about 9 P.M. very warm night.Clear hot day wind SW AM.  NW E. at night.  I called at Ora's in Loxa nobody at home Hen not returned  Gobed 9.15 P.M.  McPheron pays 10.00 on rent.Seattle

H. G. changed on beer last week PT car load to come yesterday not come and will not probably.  Start for timber 4.30 P.M.  Met Comer at Kickapoo  got there before dark.  Simons cutting sprouts  No one else working  Gobed 9.30

2.  Wednesday 5 AM.  Ther  70  85  67.

Clear.  Simons goes with Spurgeon to look up logs on Decker ridge R & J cut sprouts AM.  Afternoon boys cut logs over near river bottom, fell large white oak across hallow and had good deal of trouble with it.  Mill not running say they are out of logs.  Start home about 6 P.M. getting there at 8,  Settle in full with Simons wages and board to July 1.

Clear.  Worry nearly all day with pile of city lumber Geo Kellogg and two other men pile whole lot over in afternoon  Maffett sick and could not come over and recive it   Drove over there at night.   Council met and ajourn without doing anything to meet Monday night.  Comer up town and pretty full full  thunder shower about 5 P.M. light rain here.  Been about sick all day took medicine and ate nothing  Tue not very well.  Gobed  10.30 P.M.

Cloudy with N. Wind quite chilly, but sun comes out after a while and turns out to be a fine day  Crowd in town only moderate and trade only fair for 4th.  John Kings little girl got hurt with a sky rocket at night.  John Simons and Warren brought my wool and two large hogs.  Send out new C.C. sow by Simons.  Go bed 11 P.M.

Clear  Temp was 44. early this morning.  Frank Maffett counts up lumber and makes it substantially same as myself  the bill  unpaid at date amts. to 26599 ft $398.98  Give Hutton Tp bill to Geo Dallas $11.99  Not a very busy Saturday.  Bert was down to dinner.  I took buggy up to Pugh PM to repair but didnt finish it Crass pulled it down again.  Settle today with R. Eastons and H House for hauling lumber.  Pleasant cool day with easterly wind  Gobed 11 PM.

Clear, southerly wind.  Was about sick all night.  Mrs. Smith came to wash about 7 AM. with her  mother.  We are out of both coal and wood.  engage Jubal Jones to cut the load of wood on hand 7/8 of cord.  Tue and girls sewing P.M.  Phebe went to picnic.  Gone all night.  Very sultry with southerly wind mostly clear some clouds.  Calhoun says 1.89 in rain fell last Thursday after midnight.  Gobed  9 P.M.

Mostly clear:  light southwest wind.  Jubal comes to saw wood at 7.  Helps hitch up and  I start to country 7.15 A.M.  Jo plowing on E side N. piece.  Stop at Courtneys says will look at my meadow today and report in morn if I  go out.      Owe Mrs. G. 30 cents for eggs.      Mrs. Gaines washing.  I get a lot of beans, beets and other vegetables, also eggs.  Getting home time for dinner.  McGintry ask for use of   bottom lot for balloon fourth of July celebration which didn't get.  Very sultry day s.w. wind mostly clear AM. but cloudy after 4 PM  Light shower  between 5 and 6P.M with signs of more.  I lost my knife today.  Maggie and Minnie drove roan while at night. Cooler at night  gobed 9 P.M.

Partly cloudy, N. wind.  Jubal sawing wood and helped hitch up.  I start out to Gaines about 9 AM.  Jo Courtney says cant cut meadow.  Jo plowing SW piece  Edith there.  I got home before dinner  Leave house and buggy  at Binkleys for cleaning up getting him toward night 75c  pd.  Storm comes up just after dinner  Much thunder and wind blowing many limbs off trees in yard also everywhere in town.  Lost cane today think where I hitch near Evan's.  Gobed.  9 P.M.  Cloudy P.M. and cooler.

Mostly cloudy, Southwind.  I went up to Wrights for ham before breakfast.  They have our block  each side of square blocked off today.  I drove up to Decker Spring AM.  Saw no fungi.  Pet Dickens rode to town with me.  Balloon ascended twice near Baptist Church.  Very sultry.  Said to have been good trade in town.  The heat hurt me worse than usual.  Mostly clear except early and late southerly wind  gobed 9 PM.

      Cloudy and raining since 3 AM. said to have been quite heavy.  Get check books at both State and 2d Banks.  They redeem stamps t State.  Checks vc do not require stamp after 1st inst.  Get blank of Charley Lee and have John Marshall fix amt   Wall bankrupt a/c which mail to E.S. Robinson Referrce (sic) Springfield.  Jubal came after dinner and picked up litter left by storm in front yard also saws splits wood a while.  Drove SW looking for fungi.  Several species Rusula , Telephera  Scherwinity  Small hycoperdone. are all I saw.  Maggie and Minnie  had some entertainment P.M. - girls.  Mostly clear day with strong S.W, wind much of time.  Gobed 9 P.M.

3. Tuesday.  5 AM.  Clear and pleasant day but very warm.  Cut logs on ridge till noon finishing it.  P.M. worked along river having bad luck with two large trees.  All force hands cut logs today making about 3500 feet.  I start home about 5.30 P.M. getting there before 8  Find the girls both gone on visit to Berts.  Nick sick and H.G. grumbling  Clear day with southerly wind Tue has been cleaning house Mrs. Rogers helping  Gobed 10.30 P.M.

4.  Wednesday, 7 AM.  Stay at store most of day.  Nick did not come up and understand he is  sick abed.  Tue still cleaning house, thinks it will take all the week  Buddie very cross.  Welch takes lumber brought up for him except 4 sticks  Clear day signs of rain at night and light sprinkle at 10 P.M.  strong south wind all night  10.30 PM

Cloudy with light rain, eastwind  Jubal Jones did not come today AM. as promised probably a/c of rain.  See him forenoon and he worked all of P.M. Beginning 12.25 They began grading Street back of us P.M (5th St,) but didn't get much done on it.   They may not change my crossing to street much if any.  I started to Gaines 2.15 P.M.  Jo working on southeast piece.  did not go down to where he was.  Mrs. Gobol and daughter there there  Mrs. G. papered E room last Sat. doing very good job.  I get home 6 P.M.  Jubal Jones worked till after . cleaning up yard and will come tomorrow morn.  Miss Ford has function in dining for supper.  Mostly clear day easterly wind  Gobed 9 P.M.

Fair SE wind.  Jubal came 6.20 AM. and worked till 4 P.M.  Cleaned up yard pretty well.  Cleaned out stable   I sold heifer calf today to Pinnell 4 1/2 c. weight 320.  Jube led him to W. & T. Scales.  Marie graduated today Grammer grade.  Ora called P.M. and attended exercises with Tue.  Probably warmest day we have had this year.  Mrs. Owens sick and did not wash as usual.  Fair day with fresh S.E. wind.  Lightning SE at night  Gobed 9.30 PM.

Partly cloudy Brisk west wind,  Tue feeling very badly today.  Helen came in  morning remaining to dinner and all day.  Hitch up after dinner - 3 PM - and drive out to Gaines' and Loxa.  Jo reports that has hedge about half trimmed.  John has hired to Sam Berry by month.  Is staying at Janesville, Cumber. Co. ILL.  I drove down to Loxa for Clara.  She  and Daisy riding to town with me.  Roads good.  Slightly rough except gravel.  Get pretty cold going out.  Clear day with W to SW wind.  Helen here to bedtime.  Maggie and Buddie took her way home.  Horses in pasture made raid on my buggy today.  We got home about 7 P.M.  Gobed  9.30 P.M.  ( shorthand)

Cloudy SW wind and snowing late.  Clara washes  Her father leaves today for Indiana.  Daisy called to see Clara AM.  I quit tobacco for sure last night.  Went up after grub toward night.  Get Capon 75 and steak 20 at Pinnells, Cr. 95 c.  Tue, Maggie and Marie went to church at night.  Lois Shortess has the measles.  After dinner I got ready to go to Loxa but decide to wait till tomorrow.  Snow falling much of forenoon about an inch falling mostly disappearing P.M. sunshine.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Clear NW wind.  Clara ironing P.M.  Tue went to church and to lecture afterward.  Wall pays me 10.00 on last month's rent and will pay bal. 40.00 tomorrow, is talking again about selling out.  Tue and self bought several lots of soap and  starch.  Too cold for me to drive out to Loxa but hitched up mare after dinner.  Clear day with NW wind.  Play Cinch at night  Gobed  10.30 P.M.

Clear,  N.W. wind.  Phebe making shirt waist.  Hitch up to go to Loxa but decide to wait till P.M.  eating early dinner.  Get Mrs. Gaines' bucket and towel.  Their clock not yet repaired.  Get to Gaines  2 PM  the the two Mrs. Gs drove to Loxa.  John and wife there.  Look over meadow north of orchard but can't tell much about it yet  start home 5.30 P.M.  Clear day N.W. wind.  Roads first rate.  Tue feeling badly but went to church at night.  Marie Clara and self play cinch  Gobed  10 PM.

Mostly clear S.E. wind.  Began snowing  A.M. from E.  Caught big rat in trap in old house A.M.  Got a letter from Mrs. Perrill - first since they got home.  Pay up Pinnell for stuff got there last Mon. night 95 cts.  Occasional light snow till along in P.M. where it began to snow in earnest, stopping before dark.  About 3 in damp heavy snow fell  Calf from Brown cow due Mar 12 likely to appear sooner.  Clara finished ironing.  Tue sewing but feeling badly.  East.  Play cards with the girls at night.  gobed 10 P.M.

Clear, N.W. wind.  Got tp store 7.30 H.G. opened this morning.  Nick still at home His wife had baby girl P.M.  Bill Jeff sick at home C. with grip.  Bishop, also.  Frank McGurty buried this AM.  Father not very well thinks he has caught cold.  Baby better  Milt Drake up P.M.  One old ewe has died and are (?) twin lambs.  He is going to try to get some hay tomorrow.  Baise tells me he has persuaded John Simons to backout(sic) of baigins with me.  Have not seen Simons.  Gobed 11 PM.

Clear wind E.  I got up and made fires this morning.  H.G. and Nick both on hand today  Pay Ginther bal. 20.00.  Sal Myers $17.30 $3.75 in old liquor a/c Pay John Riri $$1.60 cash settle with Wright- my a/c 44.  Began to snow about 7 P.M. till 10 P.M. wind S.E. about 3 inches fell.  Ground is frozen land.  Nick went home early and father stayed at store with me till closing 11 PM.

H.G. sent word to Nick this morning the he was worse and would not be able to open up.  So Nick did so but was rather late about it. Bill Kelly helps clean up some in morning and washes bottles cleans out stable, shovels snow off side walk.  Grows warmer and snow melts a good deal.  Pay Dr. Patton in full 20.00

24.  Friday 7 AM.  

Nick opened this morning  He has been complaining a good deal and knocks off after noon. goes home - thinks he has the "grip" as nearly every body else.    Feeling badly myself all PM.  had some fever  Took medicine at night and did not sleep very well.  Did not go home to supper but ate some herring and crackers.  Bill Jeffrees still sick with the grip  Learn that Gen Mack Mitchell very sick. Dad stays at store till I close as usual.

Clear southwind.  Get to Gaines' 10 AM John went to Janesville today.  Jo burning brush in hollow S.E.  He went round W and S. line fences P.M.  I went to Elisha Smiths to see about selling cow at tomorrow's sale.  They haven't room for her.  Look at his horses  Think will go to sale tomorrow.  After going back to place get home 6 P.M.  Clear AM S. to NW.  Jo Fasnot at Gaines PM.  Tue very sore throat at night.  Clara washed AM.  Gobed.  9.30 P.M.

Cloudy light easterly wind.  Tue was complaining much in night of her throat but was up to breakfast and around all day.  Clara ironing.  I went out to E Smiths sale and to Gaines' to dinner.  Did not bid nor buy at sale. large crowd and things sold well.  Bert was there.  Will have  a sale of his own about Feby 15.  Think will take veciores(sic) cow down there to sell.  Mostly clear day.  S.E. wind  Roads good and dry  Marie went to H.Gs. to stay all night with Helen.  Tue better than last night.  Gobed 10 PM.  Marie spent night with Helen.

Light shower before day.  Cloudy with light rain or sleet in south, Clara finished ironing.  Roads and streets are generally dry.  Mostly clear day with southerly wind.  Tue feeling about the same. Very sore throat but did not get Dr.  Queen Victoria died Tuesday eve.  Daily papers have been full of this for several days.  Tue Groves at night 9.30 P.M.  Wednesday had talk with Ira Brown.  Claims there are 1100.00 feet logs in woods.  Ask him for offer on his interest in mill yard.

Cloudy. Snow fluries from NW all day not much falling.  Clara making cream puffs.  W.E. Jenkins will have paper put on room where falling off.  Took Queen up to Ric shop after breakfast but they didn't shoe her.  Strong NW wind all day.  Pretty hard  keeping the house warm. Tue sent waist to Phebe by express 26cts. Tue feeling better today. Didn't hitch up today. Tue and Clara played cinch at night.  Gobed 10 PM.  Marie sick at night.

Mostly clear.  easterly wind.  Queen was loose in barnyard this morning.  My throat very sore and kep(sic) me awake much in night.  Make print of pin hole picture taken the other day and had better success than expected.  Simons and Warren up with stove wood for thernolies(?).    They will work my land down there except west end of Decker piece putting into corn for half, delivered in crib there.  Good many people in town in town and roads getting smoothed down.  Clara got letter from her mother at Loxa that one of her children was sick and she left after supper to return tomorrow evening.  Tue and Marie went up town for grub &c after supper to return tomorrow evening.  Walls shows me where paper has fallen off north side of store room.  My  cold continues abut the same.  Throat some better  Gobed 10 PM.

Clear.  Strong southwind.   Tue gets breakfast and dinner.  Tone photo of Kate's boy and break celluloid tray.  Hitch up before dinner.  Start out to Gaines' before 3 PM.  Staying there about an hour.  Got home with Clara about 6.30  Daisy didn't come.  Tue feeling very badly PM and at night.  The roads are nearly as good as in summer  No mud.  Clear day and about as warm as warm as it ever gets in Jany.  Gobed 8.30 PM.

Cloudy S.W. wind  Snow flakes  flying.  Very hard wind all night.  Ther at 1 AM was 35.  A letter from Freiburg.  He sold Boh for 2.55  Old Mr. Weiss died rather suddenly yesterday.  The awning in front of our Perkins building blew down last night.  Phebe  didn't go to school .  Clear day W or NW wind.    Trade very dull  Mrs. R decided not to wash.  Gobed 11 PM

S.W. wind.  Warner reported yesterday nothing going on at milt  They  have Jackson St. closed at alley  below 5 & 6th and 6th bet Jack & Van B. putting in Steam heat pipes.  Tue feeling badly.  Abbott worked till about 4 P.M. getting wood in cellar and several odd jobs done.  Mostly clear day.  NW wind.  Thought to go to Loxa but did not get off soon enough.  Tue attended R.Circle.  I sort and cut out pieces from big lot of Records AM & PM.  Mort and Kate over at night till 9.30  Tue and Lillie went after Marie at party at Gannaway's about bed time.  Gobed 9.30 PM

Cloudy Southerly wind.  Snow flying several times AM.  Buy two bridles at Shoemaker Cr. 3.25  Start out to Gaines 10 AM  taking them and old harnesses repaired  Jo shucking.  Get home 12.30 P.M.  Warren and Simon brings up two loads of corn.  Own in crib 31 bush other sold to Rickter 28 bu @ .30  $8.40  use check in pocket.  Their Simon's corn is not going to  time out as well as expected.  May make 50 to the a(?)  Tue feeling badly.  Lillie does not satisfy her.  Pay up Abbott for work 2.25   in full.  Light  rain about dark  Mostly cloudy day.  Went up after supper for shave.  Frank May got sick before finishing.  Driving ran.  Roads good.  B.C. better price.  Gobed 9.30  P.M.  Pay up Mountjoy at night

Cloudy, N.W. wind.  have five loads corn from Simon's in crib about 160 bu. One sold A. Richter 28 bu.  also 17 bu first load = 205 fr. ranch.  Mort Grove and sister Mm. Wilson called about noon  Find Ferd here most of the day.  He and Tue went down to HG after dinner.  Took Ferd home from there and back after Tue.  Garrett  Wall in town,has been west. Mostly cloudy day  Snow flying in AM.  Marie and Lillie make taffy.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Clear southwind (sic).  Drive out to Gaines AM get  home time for dinner.   Jo was burying his potatoes.  He has delivered to Linder 764 5/7 bush corn a  mostly at 29 c  This besides  what he has cribbed  altogether amts to about 1050 bush  thinks he is more than half done.  Take couple snap shots of Marie and Lilly in back yard.  Develop at night.  Ferd calls at night.  Clear day southwind (sic)  Gobed 930 PM.

Mostly thought to drive out to Gaines early but have to return and oil buggy.  Pay back dues &c on H.G. Loan Stock 113.45  giving  Tue's check to Phonso Shera great deal of interest in tomorrow general election  Many men drunk at night.  Received by mail John Linder check 222.74 being for  764. 50/70 bush corn all of Gaines to date.  Clear cool day with  NW wind.  Gobed 11 P.M.

Part cloudy.  Self feeling badly.  Went  up town after bacon before breakfast.  Vote 11 AM.  Start to Gaines' 2 P.M.  No body at home till after 4 oclock (sic)  Mrs. Groat shucking corn.  Started home at 5.  Went up town after supper but couldn't hear anything about election, went home and to bed.  The roads are pretty good, slightly rough in places no dust.  Trees are mostly green.  Many tomato vines are growing.  Maggie had company  at night: Her companions at Jenkins store.  Saw Roger Bennett on west side at night.  Says  I Brown not saw till next week and that he did not get the Cumberland Co. bill he expected  The other Mrs. Owen washed AM.  Sprinkle rain 4 to 5 P.M. very light  Gobed 10.30 PM.

Cloudy smokey or foggy.  Up town before breakfast learn that Republican carried every thing.  Tone up some pictures of Lillie Beck, printed yesterday.  W.R. Highland was beaten several hundred.  Crowley dem for Congress supposed to be elected.  Cadle dem for eglization (sic) board thought to be elected. otherwise all elected on repub ticket.  Tate Gov probably 75000  Pay all Frommel a/c in full 7.80  This for this year and last.  Tue F. Shatsburger pays 100 on lumber; still owes 50 c.  Will Decker in town and says will fire up and saw tomorrow.  Mostly cloudy day N W wind.  Tue got letter from Phebe which answered sending 500  Lillie washing windows.  Abbott will work at wood tomorrow.  Gobed 9.30 P.M.

Cloudy but not raining  Ride down to river bottom  Cut L board tree in S. Hollow which wouldn't work.  Look for  more which couldn't find find boys cut one in little Fritz hollow P.M. which we think all right  Start home at 3.30 PM arriving at 6 P.M.  Roads very muddy and slow driving.  Mist and fine rain PM and night  Gobed at 10.30 PM~  Trade has been light this week.

Cloudy and rain at spells all day.  Interested going to woods.  Pay Popham per load of hay. 3.00 .  HG will start for Ark. next Tuesday, with hunting party.  Trade not very lively, am somewhat discouraged about my shed and feed for sheep.  Have done but little toward it for two weeks on account of  rain.  Gobed 11 PM

(shorthand)  Learn at Gaines' that Irene was expected home today.  The roads excepting paved streets are very muddy this morning   Lend Deffenbaugh abstract for ranch.  They are  getting their pipes together in front of Perkins lot.  on way to square with steam heat.  Simons did not come up with corn as intended.  Hatton has not shown up this week.  Went out to Gaines' 2 P.M.  Jo. shucking shock corn.  Has got 14 loads in to  elevator.  They  have only paid 29 cents for past week.  Get a  basket full of vegetables and start home 5 P.M.  Partly clear day slightly cooler than yesterday.  Got pretty good mess of Caprinus comatus at Bill Hill's which which have for dinner.  Jo Gaines has shucked about 750 bush corn to date.  I did not visit Loxa today.  HOme in time  for supper  Gobed 8.30 P.M.

Drove up to Dicks AM and beyond No mushrooms in sight.  See Teo Sefton about coal.  Take Bill Campbell down to his place AM.  They are digging ditch for heat pipes in ally back of store.  Lilly ironing.  CD Mitchell gives me bill for 1200 feet more lumber.  Saw Hatton crossing overhead bridge AM.  They have had saw mill on Decker land north of spring a week or two.   T. Armstrong out of common corn.  P.M. load still in barnyard.  Got a letter from Charley Popham saying need not bring rest of his bill.  Showers P.M. with heavy rain toward night and after dark.  Take Marie over to Weyths after supper to Halloween party.  Corn 30 cts here am entirely out of corn except sweet.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Cr.  Sent draft $120.00 to Loan and Trust Co.  John Simon and Warren up with wood.  Says Ira does not intend to sow any more until after after the election.  Give Bob Chapman key to Perkins room for station purposes.  Charge no rent.  Harry Stoddert wants lot of 2x4 - 12 and 14.  Dun Evans for small bill due.  Tue  sends some shirts to Phebe in newspapers.  Bill Hill called with Caprinus comatus while we were at breakfast.  John Simons calls after dinner and give him bills amounting to some 3600 ft.  Saye Brown in town.  He called P.M. and we settled for all collected by both of us, self to pay hauling.  Give Ira ch for $19.04  Simons not very well satisfied with Tom's management.  Pick balance of quinces.  Had about  1 1/2 bu on three trees.  Fair day westerly wind.  Tue over at  Groves at night.  Gobed 9 PM.

Clear heavy white frost.  Stove(?) came at 6 AM.  Took all caws and calves except one  Frank went with him to help  Frank and Milt got in about 7 P.M.    Riley & Rogers cut red oaks and cut load of stove wood for me P.M.  Had better luck with logs than yesterday.  Clear day and warmer.  Very dry down in timber pasture short  but plenty of water for stock.  Gobed 9 PM

Clear  Drive out to Gaines AM to see Shirley try the BC stubble but was too late  Jo grubbing  Was down at Hazel  (?)  (?)  and Shirley.  Shirley cribbing.  Took Linder sample of our corn says too sappy yet for 70lbs  Get lot of stuff at Jones for Gaines folks  Decide to go to shucking tomorrow.  Shirley says will gather road through field tomorrow.  Get home dark  Gobed 8 PM

Clear.  SE wind.  Sign contact selling Shirley BC to Geo Rosebraugh @82.50    See W E McCravy about Minton note due tomorrow.  Boy and self went over and count Briggs  fencing 43.1x6-14.  He wants 62 more pieces.  Considerable B C unloading at W & C warehouse, for which they get 80.00.  Pretty red clouds up and shower south with thunder.  Sprinkle here  Thought to go to Loxa tonight and started but came back home.  "Roads getting dusty.  Gobed 11 PM.

Partly clear S.E. wind.  Clyde Ashby and self drove out to Gaines after breakfast getting lot of tomatoes &c got home before noon.  Jo about done hauling out B.C. Seed.  Simon was in town but didn't bring any lumber because couldn't get a load of good.    Self feeling badly all day  Pay Owen 2.00 P.M which is about all I owe  him     Marie got home from visit to Terre Haute about noon.  Partly cloudy day with shower 5 P.M. much thunder   Nothing new in BC market today and  heard of no sales  Didn't go uptown after supper.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Mostly cloudy, southerly wind.  Tue and I start for Berts  8 AM.   Head N. road by Loxa.  Rene not home but came in a few moments, Andy Leitch there.  I stay about an hour go home away south of old road  Buy water melon of Bill Brown.  Get home before dinner  Shower came up about 2 P.M. raining for nearly an hour  Bring home samples of water from Berts new well.   Gaines folks were going to Cumberland but we saw the team in pasture as we passed.  Clyde has lot of boys looking round its farm much of P.M.  Drive south of town alone a while at night.  Campbell not there Develop 2 plates BC hands  Go bed 9.30
