Clear N.E. wind 2.  I hunt up Pugh and he gets me plows from shop for which I owe him 50cts.  I drove down to Woodson place and around by Wrightsville.  Find nice lot of  A abreption on Stoddert land.  Arriving home to dinner.  All sorts of fungi- are growing, some A Cuepestries in front yard.  After dinner toward night Drove with Nick to Dice Woods where we gather the finest lot of A abrupties  I ever saw.  We quit because we could not bring them home.  I give Bacon a mes and put some in my ketchup jar,  He thinks he will have to set his house back about  20 feet on account of street in front.  Montz and Kate over at a/c water melon.  Mostly clear - some cumuli-  with northerly wind self not feeling pretty well.  Gobed, 9.30 P.M.

2.  Monday, 5 AM.  Clear.  Rile Decker went to town JS and John Decker help dip the lambs today till noon.  Then cut logs P.M. on ridge south of mill cutting about 1200 ft.   ? JD and Steve have the west end of that ridge about finished.  Left sheep in pasture today.  They have been running outside.  10 P.M.

Clear westerly wind.  Found light in sitting room had been burning all night.  This is C.G.'s birthday - 59.  Start for ranch 9.30 AM.  by Wrightsville, getting to Timons 10.40 AM.  He  I drive down through his place to where mill was and down to Val Handly line, back by Ira's .he was not at home.  Ate dinner at Simons and drove down past old place.  they have plowed up pasture and orchard and put in corn.  Went as far as Milt Hand(?);  Will not at home, waited to see his tax receipts.  He went with Ira  John Simons tells me Sunday about trade Geo Martin has figured on making.  Thinks can get 10.00 per A for ranch land.  Did not have time to look over lumber Sunday.  Stop at Aunt Malinda's going back.  Settle with  Warren, but did not pay anything.  Owe him 5.50 bal on labor done.  7 days @ $1.50 10.50 less 200 posts 5.00  Get home 7 P.M.  Mostly clear warm days  Light shower sprinkle 4 P.M. at ranch. and  thunder shower at night while milking.  Roads fair, dry but rough south of Five Mile House.  Gobed 9 P.M. Most cloudy N.E. 2.  Rhoda washes and irons till 2 P.M.  Mostly clear day and averages the hottest to date this year.  Too hot to move round much light variable winds.  No signs of rain.  After 5 P.M.  I drive south to Kickapoo soak up old buggy wheels return via Wrightsville getting home 7 P.M.  Am still waiting for new axels.  Tue patched up old hammock in garden.  The girls went over to Wolmsley's P.M.  My pain in side much better P.M.  Phebe and Muggs dye a red dress.  Gobed 9 P.M.

May 3-5, 1913 In Charleston, Illinois

3.  Saturday.  5.30  AM  Ther.  60.  86.  70. = 72.

Clear mostly S.2.  Had high fever all night didn't sleep much.  Emmett cleaned up site of old house and quit at noon Pay him up in full check $6.75 will get his wood away Monday if possible.  I felt very poorly all day and took big dose oil about.  Ate nothing much during day - very sore throat - Drove up town AM. but didn't move round much P.M.    Tue out a while go bed 8.30 some cloudy P.M.

Mostly cloudy. S.2. Some better this morn and ate some breakfast.  Drove up for paper.  Tue  went to church.  I am trying to decide on a buggy from H. G. Phelps.  Sprinkles rain several times during day.  I drove down by hog farm after 3 P.M. very light shower sent me home.  Mort and Kate were over P.M. till near night, after which Mrs. Curd called till about 9 oc.  It threatened rain many times today but did not lat the dust heaviest about 8 P.M.  Go bed 11 P.M.

clear mostly S.2.  Tue cleans house some alone  upstairs.  Trial of Chas Fritz and other boys did not come up.  Threatening weather all day.  Heavy clouds with thunder N at 8 AM  Thunder NW 4 PM. with sprinkle rain here wind S to SW. about 4 PM  I drove down by Woodson place returning by Wrightsville.  The roads are good  getting dry and rain is  needed.  Several have planted corn.  Have felt slightly better today not enough to encourage me much.  Harman phones that planter does not drop regular and will get  a grader today for his seed  corn.   I got  another letter from Phelps today but have not yet scketched(sic) buggy.  Read catalogues of books at night.  Gob. 9.30

Mostly clear red at sunrise E. 2.  Light white frost.  Tue and Muggs went to church AM.  Muggs got  Sunday paper- Interocean.  Was too late for R.H.  After they left I  drove south to Woodson place returning by Wrightsville about 1 P.M.  the roads are good most of the  trees hold their green leaves especially the oaks, Hickory walnut and some other trees  have shed.  I met but one auto in twelve mile drive today.  Toward night I drove over to Frank Balch's.  Will call to look at work tomorrow.  Mostly clear with moderate S.E. to south winds.  C.O. Rennells has not appeared to finish painting on W.C. and we will get other man.  Gobed 10.30

Part cloudy S.2.  Take quarter R2ps  back to  BPa & Co.  The shortage in coal still continues and they have no coal but Pana.  Order on glass for  coal room window 14x28.  Didn't find strip for W.C. to suit.  Our painter has never appeared.  think he "doped" the paint left as it refuses to dry.  Frank Balch looks at furnace and will clean and put it up tomorrow for two dollars.  Harman and family in town in Surry.  Hitches team in barn.  Mrs. Bell takes 1 1/2 bu pears.  Tue and Maggie to function at  Pres. Church toward night and later.  I drove east after 4 P.M. return 5.30.  Part cloudy with fresh southerly winds.   Clouds W. at sunset.  Quite warm day and in night.  Tue was over at LeRoy's night.  Go bed 8.30 P.M.

Cloudy.  SE.2.  Mort made and set window frame today~  The plumbers did not do anything.  I hitch up early and drive S. to Woodson road returning by Wrightsville getting home noon.  Roads generally good - becoming dusty.  The late frost 30 and 1st have touched corn in places.  Mort worked all day.  Cottingham didn't appear.  Bill Scott called to see about Perkins lot.  Burbank wants it.  Ferd writes will he married this month to Florence Purtill.  I drove up for grub toward night.  Breald and B.S.  Tue over to  Groves at night - a party of friends.  Mostly clear day light to fresh southerly winds.  Tue put in P.M. varnishing floor of hall upstairs.  Buy whip at Frommels.  Go bed 8.30.

Clear.  S.E.1. Gas. Cottingham's men work most of AM at furnace.  They had to take off two  top section to stop leak.  Mrs. Grove was over P.M.  I try the roads south after 3 PM down by Woodson place gettinghome before 6 P took mare to Nickles.  The roads are dry except a few mud holes.   They are a silo south of Wrightsville.  There have been many silos put  this season.  Clear day; light S.E. wind.  Tue attended church at night.

Clear.  W.3.  Kit skinned her back rolling.  Broke strap on harness which repair.  The water leaked out to 1st floor radiators but think slacking up.  Harman phones for nails and roof roll.  Order Andrews to send same Loxa this P.M.   Harman will get nails says P.P. & another man at work at roof Harman says .  Bert's Helen calls AM staying to dinner.  Tue sending Buddy box of a +Ps.  Walter Smith works a while P.M. trying to stop furnace leaks.  He didn't do it, and thinks may have to take it down again.  I drove down to Wrightsville  and return by Normal late P.M.  Clear day with W or NW. wind.  Gobed.9

Part cloudy S.3.  Tue makes fire in the furnace but leaks continue bad. as ever.  I repair girth and drive to  B.P.A.  Talking  a while with Jackson.  Order jag of coal which deliver late P.M.  Can't fill coal room until proposed W.C. is put in.  Mrs. H. over P.M.  Jack and I drive to Dicewood 4 P.M.  Didn't see any fungi.  More burrs than anything else.  Bert's Helen stopped P.M. on way home from Normal is sick.  The road mostly dry and somewhat rough.   Most cloudy P.M. threatens rain 8.30

Part cloudy S.1.  Rheumatiz seems to be getting all over me.  I manage to hitch up.  My renewal to R.H. by Chas. Jones has not shown up yet. have been buying it for several days.  Last Sat. was last number with lable.  It has been renewed.  Rhoda washes AM.  I did not hear from Parker or Harman.  There was light shower 4 AM.  (.02).  I drove S.W. PM.  They are putting in concrete culvert on Woodson road so  I turn W and get around to Wrightsville and finally home about 6 P.M.  Roads somewhat muddy Gravel good.  I feel poorly all day and take B.M.p. at night.  Muggs spent night at Seftons.  Tue and (?) went uptown.  Gobed  9.30

Cloudy, SW.1. Rheumatics worse than ever this morn but I hitch up my mare.  Write letter to Phebe enclosing 10.00 for birthday.  Later P.M. drive down by Wrightsville going by Myers have return by hog farm.  A dash of rain about noon has made the roads somewhat muddy round town at  W.ville.  There was no rain.  Harman phones that would be in for lumber.  I did not see him.  He has not threshed his oats yet.  All oats round Charleston have been threshed.  I called on Parker late P.M. says they finished piling old shop at Loxa today.  They will go out Wednesday to work on B.C. shed.  Harman phones that the roofing is hauled out.  Take mare to Nickles.  Part cloudy, southerly wind.  Gobed 9.30

Clear N.E. 2.  Tue feeling bad this morn.  I kept up mare last night on account of the rain.  Jack has flavored up the whole farm  with  his carrion.  Get mare shod at Hostler's, old shoes all round.  Pd cash.  Get some bread at Fausts~  Tue and Ellen work all day at old S R carpet getting it patched and laid.  Some cloudy P.M. threatens rain P.M. wind N.W.  I drove S. by Woodson.  Saw one party planting corn S.W. town_ the first I have seen.  Came through Wrightsville stop at store.  Mrs. Hibbard calls P.M.  Tue got letter from Buddy.  Gobed 10

125 Years Ago

Monday, May 9, 1887  6.30 Ther 68, 85,65  Clear, This is the last day of License, Trade rather dull except in larger lots.  Took Gnass in afternoon and deliver considerable stuff.  Very few people in town.  Delia washes.  Warm pleasant day.    Cross gets off  and fails me get Bounce Chauceller to finish   A few days more would finish all the stock I have on hand.  Shut up for last time and go home.*  Gobed 12 Midnight.

*This must be the end of the tavern that Charles and his brother owned.
