21.  Wednesday.  7 AM  Ther 31  37  29
Cloudy and damp, wind W.  was probably sprinkles from before daylight  Chet Bennet brought up load of 55 posts, very small, Uncle John was down to dinner.  I got too much fire under meat today and injured it some.  Mrs. Rogers ironed in afternoon.  Hat was here to supper  Tue stills feels badly.  Trade dull.  Cloudy with mist and light rain and W wind.  NW at night and clearing.  Gobed  1230

22.  Thursday  7 AM.  Ther  29.  35.  29
Cloudy, wind w about 1/2 in snow on ground fell last night occasional snowflakes most of day, dark and disagreeable Briggs offers bottom field for 500 dollars  Tue feeling some better.  Crail works over stable  manure and cleans out stable.  Gobed 1230 ~~

23.   Friday  7  AM.  Ther  24. 34.  27.
Clear, light wh. frost.  Clouds up AM and cloudy day with 'westerly wind.  NW toward night clear at 9 P.M.  Tue feels better today Self not very well took med at night.  Trade very quiet and has been all the week.  We do not decide to buy Briggs' lot thought would wait and consult Uncle John.  Mrs. Curt Davis here P.M.  Kate Davis over toward night  Gobed 12.45

24.  Saturday.  7.30 AM.  Ther 23.  26.  18
Cloudy.  Turie can't decide to buy Briggs lot Uncle John was down to dinner but we said nothing about it to him.  Johnny Decker was up settle with him to date.  He reports that Nannie goat got killed in hog pen.  Heard that Latta and Alex Richter were going into the saw mill business.  Father not very well.  Hat was down at night and stayed to supper.  Trade light for Saturday Order claret and rum from Meyer.  Partly cloudy day.  Clear at night.  Wind N.W.  Roads are said to be rough  gobed. 

 25.  Sunday, 8 AM.  Ther.  20,  41,  32.
Clear, Wind S. Heavy  white frost.  Tue did not go to church.  I start for ranch 3.45 getting there about dark John and Lucy gone to meeting Rile Decker and Warren there.  Clear day with westerly wind, roads good much of the way. river very low.  Go bed, 9 AM.

26.  Monday  6 AM.  Ther.  29.  37.  36.
Partly cloudy.  John fixes to separate sheep so can feed the thin ones, and burn brush.  I walk out to rye No. 2 find it looking pretty well.  John and Rile go to work at posts in river hills.  Lizzie and Lucy are willing to tend a small field of onions on shares (half) I to furnish land and seed John and I look at Fritz hollow and think it will do first rate.  I started home after dinner John went to  F Hol with me.  Got home 5 PM. been sick since Saturday has not been to stove.  Buy lot of Briggs for 510.00 go bed  10.15  PM  Bob Reat died.

Top of page:  Post Office was broken into last night young Drummer arrested for same today.

27.  Tuesday  7 AM.  34.  52.  37.
Mostly clear..  Went to store without breakfast which I didn't get till 10 oclock  Dinner at 3.  Mr. Piper called P.M.  Tue and self sign note to Briggs 12 mo 8% int for lot in bottom.  Briggs makes out deed squeezing in the taxes on lot.  Father not very well yet.  Weather Jim Roads good Warren Decker brought up 52 Posts go bed 11 P.M.~~

28.  Wednesday, 6 A.M.  Ther  40  46  42
Cloudy and raining lightly, continuous till afternoon sunshine occasionally PM.  foggy at night.  Nick not round yet.  Uncle John in town has been to Snider several days  Stays all night with us  Hat was down to supper.  R A Reat was buried today.  John Reat was buried today.   John Snider of town died last night  Trade quiet go bed go bed 12

29. Thursday  7 AM  Ther  41.  51.  37.
Cloudy, wind S.  Nick still sick.  I went up before getting my breakfast  Look over records at Court house regarding the lot in the bottom.  John Snider was buried today.  Brownfield cleaned out stable.  Mrs. Rogers ironed  Trade fair warm and pleasant with SW wind tell about  1 P.M. wind charged to W strong.  gobed 12

Part cloudy.  Nick not yet up town P.O. inspector here examiner Drumifer P.O. robbery suspect Ed Bond was brought to town crazy to night.  Father still complaining.  Somewhat cloudy day wind variable.  Gobed 12

Cloudy with light rain which continued till night with short rests.  Uncle John in town but not down to dinner.  the deed for Phillips farm have come.  Nick was up town today first time since last Saturday but he didn't stay long  Cloudy wet day Trade better than expected  Gobed 12

June 1890

2.  Monday, 5 AM.  Clear.  Rile Decker went to town JS and John Decker help dip the lambs today till noon.  Then cut logs P.M. on ridge south of mill cutting about 1200 ft.   ? JD and Steve have the west end of that ridge about finished.  Left sheep in pasture today.  They have been running outside.  10 P.M.

June 1901

Sunday. 5.30 AM.  Ther.  60.  82.  70 2/3
Clear westerly wind.  Found light in sitting room had been burning all night.  This is C.G.'s birthday - 59.  Start for ranch 9.30 AM.  by Wrightsville, getting to Timons 10.40 AM.  He  I drive down through his place to where mill was and down to Val Handly line, back by Ira's .he was not at home.  Ate dinner at Simons and drove down past old place.  they have plowed up pasture and orchard and put in corn.  Went as far as Milt Hand(?);  Will not at home, waited to see his tax receipts.  He went with Ira  John Simons tells me Sunday about trade Geo Martin has figured on making.  Thinks can get 10.00 per A for ranch land.  Did not have time to look over lumber Sunday.  Stop at Aunt Malinda's going back.  Settle with  Warren, but did not pay anything.  Owe him 5.50 bal on labor done.  7 days @ $1.50 10.50 less 200 posts 5.00  Get home 7 P.M.  Mostly clear warm days  Light shower sprinkle 4 P.M. at ranch. and  thunder shower at night while milking.  Roads fair, dry but rough south of Five Mile House.  Gobed 9 P.M. [shorthand]

1. Sunday  6.30 AM.  Ther.  65
Mostly clear.  Painted screen doors up at store.  Crass helped oil buggy and I started for Ranch at 11 A.M. by way of Handly Ford getting there about 1.30 P.M.  Rile Decker over toward night settle up with him.  Clear day NW wind  9.30

June 1901

(top of page)  Geo Gray has recently had "new" front put in Shoe Store.  Mrs. Monroe building  they are painting it today May 31.

1.  Saturday.  5.30 AM.  Ther.  53.  74.  54.  =  60 1/3
Cloudy Sprinkle rain.  Roan untied himself last night and was grazing back of house when got up.  Jubal Jones came 7  AM and worked till nearly 6 P.M.  clean up grass, cut wood &c. will come again Monday.  John Simons  brought up hayrack.  Settle with him as  possible.  Giving him check for balance 5.50.  Renew note at St. with Earl Decker 10.00 for 90 d. promise not to do it again.  Will Decker says taxes paid on piece to be decided to Bachman June 13.  Pay Mrs. Dorsch a/c K.G. ch. 6.70 ice full to date from last Dec. 22.  Oscar Decker is working for  Walter Briggs.  Miss Ford's friend Miss Wheeler came P.M. to stay a while with her.  Phillip Davis building a new house which shows up strong in S.W.  They are just getting the roof on.  Self bellyache after supper.  Tue got a letter from Mrs. Eastin at Denver yesterday inquiring about her tax &c.  Fair day with northerly wind  Clear at night.  The rain early A.M.  Gobed.  9.30 AM.~

March 1-8, 1890 in Charleston, IL

March 1890

1.  Saturday 6 AM.
at ranch
John went after hay to Sims got a small load of the of the best we have had.  Rile worked till noon, and settle with him for work done to date.  He still owes me for two months rent.  Several lambs died today and three well five new ones this morning.  Pretty clear pleasant day but cold NW wind.  Gobed 10.30 PM.  John and wife went out to barn in night

2.  Sunday 6 AM. At Ranch.  Ther
Clear day.  John and Warren went for corn.  I walked over across hollow AM.  Johnny Decker dined with us.  Rile Decker worked all day at odd jobs.  Had to nail stripes on south side of shed when wind changed to SW in PM.  There have been six lambs today two died in house.  Gobed  11.30 PM

3.  Monday. 5 AM.  Ther.                34  =
Partly cloudy.  John started for another load of hay at about 8 AM.  I work with sheep and lambs till 10.30 AM and start home getting there at about 3 PM after the roughest ride I ever had.  I counted lambs pretty carefully this AM and make 49 alive most of them pretty good, as nearly as I can tell then have ten of them died, and 43 of the ewes have had lambs 16 ewes have had twins according to this.  Two or three of the remaining 27 ewes are probably not with lamb.  My trip home nearly used me up and I did not go up town. Abbot brought me some cull posts and cut up for wood toward night.  Our worst trouble at ranch is want of milk for young lambs, John will buy a cow as soon as he can.  Gobed.  10.30 PM --

cloudy and snow flying from NW.  Mostly clear day with N.W. wind.  Remain at home all day all the neighbors have called today.  Hat was here toward night.  Feeling badly self and took some oil sat up till 1.30 AM waiting for it.   Abbott cut lot of cull posts and some poles into stove wood  Grows colder.  The street lights not lighted tonight  nor last night  Tue spent evening up at Lattas  Gobed  1.30 AM

5.  Wednesday.  7.30 AM.  Ther.  Ther 13.  25.  16.  =  18
Cloudy and snowing lightly from N.E.  Snows about 1 inch AM.    Went up about 10.30.  Remit Dunnaway.  Pabst. F. Strauu & Co in full send WHR  JM A(?) & Co. Louieville KY to free (?) B ? Whiskey.  Bert down to dinner.  Came in with team and wagon.  Bim was married last Saturdat to Ora Easton.  Bill Kelly works at store washing bottles P.M. says has good cow to sell.  Spent evening at store first time in a week .  Street lamps not going tonight.  Go bed 11.30 PM

6.  Thursday 7 AM.  Ther  4.  27.  21  = 17 1/3
Clear with N.E.  wind.  Get letter from Aunt Maria.  The first in a long time.  Uncle John down to dinner.  Bim and wife are going to live with him this sumer (sic).  Get samples grass seed from WS Hill and pay him for all I have bought.  Council meet at night and vote to have special election on license question on  Apl 23.  Tue feeling badly today and also at night.  Marie sick in night - Tue  thinks from swallowing a piece of chewing wax.  Tue and baby got up and spent night on the lounge down stairs  Mostly clear day with N.E. wind:  hazy night.  Circle around moon.  Sat up till after 2 A.M.

7.  Friday 7.30 AM.  Ther  21  32  22  =  25
Cloudy and snowing from S.E  Tue not feeling much better.  Self about sick all day and night had high fever at night did not go bed till 2.30 AM.  Snows lightly most of day from N.E. about 2 1/2 in  Mrs. Eastins sick sent Ed for Ed for whiskey  Trade light, did not go up town at night  Bill Kelly gives me order for his cow if I want her at $25.00  He recommends her highly.
