Cloudy wind S.E.  Kelly starts for  hay  8 AM intending to take small load down to woods taking over  half  a ton got back at 4 P.M. lead my mare down rode back leaving team.  Have talk with John Simons who proposes to work for me for 20.00 per month.  Milt up town says a black ram lamb was born yesterday  Milt gets full and gets in Calaboar at night.   Late rain forenoon heavy after dark with some thunder  Clear night with strong W  wind Uncle John down to dinner, self nearly sick all day  Gobed 12.30  Got Marie's photos 1 1/2 doz. 5.00

Clear.  brought white cat up from woods  There was alarm of fire in night,  Farris' house.  Start for timber at 9 AM. taking gun.  Strong N. wind all day and cold.  Rutherford at Mitts count  sheep finding them all right.  Rode up Fritz Hollow and into Hall and Davis  land  Get home after 6 P.M.  Roads Good.   Pasture very short   gobed 9.30

Partly cloudy.  Went up to Mitchells pastures north of town before breakfast getting assortment of mushrooms Battiiola Camefeshe, Lycaofer gregardeum.Callyhiradica  which I ate also several others which didn't eat.  Lepiota procirus.  Lepiola Naucmies  (at home)  Caprenius micaceus perhaps Polyporus raeticala.  Forenoon I went up and about Decker spring getting lot of old psaldiola such as such as I transplanted some of the spawn of!  they must have appeared about 2d or 3d and all  rather small  Fine rain much of time AM.  Tue got another letter from Phebe AM.  nothing new.   John Simons up but didn't see him.  He and Earl Decker have had qarrell (sic).  Went with Neal Brown to look for Lycoperlon.. found some. Quite heavy rain/ (?) 4. till 5 P.M.  Fix up mushrooms to dry in old house.  Lycoperdoms are growing finely but are full of insects soon as they get any size.  Tue worrying much about Phebe.  Mrs. Knock here when I arrive 5 P.M.  Ike Rogers rides from town to wagon yard E. with me & Pug. talking m(?).  He sold his B.C.  for 80.00 and intends to grow it next year, Renting ground.  I took Ferd down to his grandmas at night he has decided to go to public schools in Charleston~

Cloudy day with quite  heavy shower about  4 P.M.  Didn't cat supper.  gobed 9 P.M.

Clear.  N.1.  I spent bad night  with throat and stomach.  Thirty six years ago today we moved from Mrs. Norfolks house to the old house on this lot.  H.G.  brought  C.O. AM.  The birthday party came off all right with six guests all ladies.  Will Stoddert of Mott N.D. called a while.  He is farming up there.  He does not think much of machine plowing.  He starts home today.  Tue got home 5 P.M.  Bright clear day light  southerly winds.  I am dicting (sic) in eating.  I have good appetite for sick man and eat  too much.  Gb

Clear. SW.1. Sleep was no good last night night.  Tue  complaining of her back ; Rheumatiz.  We get letter from Buddy A.M.  Think throat some better.  Think JEM is weakening the booze slightly.  Tue went to R.C. P.M.  She took Harman check for corn to deposit at 2d 30.90.  I fix up one of his check books P.M.  Later shave - since 4th (?)  It was a bad case.  I am becoming too lazy to do anything.  Late PM I walk round place awhile.  the snow has mostly disappeared,  but frost not all out except spots.  Think will get mare tomorrow.  Tue got home 6 P.M.  Clear day moderate SW wind:  the warmest day since Jan 29 when it was 60.  Gobed 9  Tue sends  package , shawl,  to Muggs and one to Phebe P.P.

Clear and pleasant, considerable (?).  Boys got  to work before 7. R & S did not come.  Stretching the two reels of wire closed gaps and got in good start on the fence from the corner W.    Warren brought teams and hauled out several loads of  plank and posts.  Pleasant day SW wind.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Fair, looked like thunder shower in P.M.  Bob and I  went over to S. side to stack a lot of ties.  Rutherford has moved out of house and Kink is staying there a lone making his .  count up 30 more for him.  Bob hauls us out lumber and posts  and boys work at fence.  R. and S. came after noon and work at clearing out road.  I start home about 4 P.M.  Found Tue about sick with bad cold which she has had for several days.  Go bed 9 P.M.

Mostly cloudy wind easterly.   Wrote letters to several parties for catalogues of Mill &c.    Got measured at Winters for suit of clothes to cost 30.00  .  Zeke Easton brought in cord of wood which he sold to John Chapman and which John owes for.  J.W. Lackey inspects walnut lumber and pays the same 57.20.   Come in town trying to city bill of lumber.  Mrs. R. irons.   W.S.G. cut some wood.  Began to rain about 1.30 and kept it up most of AM and lightly in night, wind S.E.  Wrote a letter to Uri asking him to sell my  furniture.  Gobed 10 PM

Cloudy wind N.E. clears off.  Sam Lietch talks to me about buying in at coal shaft.  Went out to Uncle John's with Tue  in afternoon, says will drive cow in for us Saturday, got home 6 P.M.   Bim has planted 5 acres of watermelons.  Cool day pleasant afternoon.  Gobed 9.30 AM

Mostly  cloudy and looked like rain.  Start for woods with Kelly  getting there about 9 AM.  We began looking out a line for a fence but it began to rain before we had been there long.  They were working the road today.  Started home in the rain about 1 P.M. rained most of day rather (?) grows warmer at night.  Gobed  8.30.

Cloudy S. wind.  Heavy  rain in night with good deal of thunder and lightning about the first we have had this spring.  Baby has began to walk alone some this week.  Get offer of sawmill outfit  from Lane and Bodley Co.  Uncle john brought in cow P.M.  Kelly helped about two hours in afternoon straighten up lumber.  Rutherford up pay him 2.00 order.   Bought a catfish of Bill Neece.  Mostly cloudy day  N.W. wind.  Misty P.M.  Gobed 9.30 P.M.

Mostly clear, wind N.E. veirring [sic] to easterly.  Kelly  worked forenoon put stakes to berries and grape vines.  Bert was here to dinner.  The cow gives about 3 gal per day.  I milk.   Sell half cord wood to A. Owens.  Roads bad and great.  Delivered Jim wood.  Find bugs in plenty on potatoes in bottom.  Confer with H.G. P.M. he is still anxious to go in to sawmill business.  Go bed. 10 P.M.

Clear all day, cool  Comer was up and we settle up in full paid him check $52.94.  Mrs Rodgers washed.  I walked out to coal shaft in P.M.  They have gone 230 ft.  Cu(?) home by its pent house and depot.  Trees came from Starrs & Harrison.   Bethesda per Jule Beall came today.  Gobed 9.30 P.M.

24.  Tuesday.  6 AM.  36.  64.  42.
Clear. N.E. wind.  Myers came at 7 AM. and worked all day.  setting trees and vines.  Rutherfords were up (?) ties.  Pay Jake & R 10.00 and Ruben 2.50.  Meyers pretty slow duing to large boil on neck.  Didn't get nearly done.  Mrs. Rogers ironed.  Have not planted much garden yet.  Too dry and cool for anything to grow.  There was heavy white frost last night and ice found .44 inch thick in open pan out doors.  Gobed 9.30 P.M.

Clear. E.wind.  No indication of frost this morning.  C. Gordon (?) off and piles ties.  Have 133 out now.  Speak to Johnston about ponk house.  Gordon and Campbell help in PM., set raspberries and cut willows, am very sorry I had the willows cut.  Pleasant day with easterly wind and quite warm in P.M.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Clear.  N.8.  White Frost.  No ice.  Ray did not come as expected and had to carry up coal ourselves.  Look over some old papers &c. A.M.  Tue went over plantsthing(sic) me what she didn't want me to do.  I got my mare 10 A.M.  but did not use her till after dinner. 1.30 P.M.   start out to settle with some of my  creditors.  Mare too foxy so don't drive near the depot.  Met Al Latta cor Div. and Madison where he has rooms.  I drove out by fairground up by John R. Hills to town there west to  Popham road then south to R.R. and home.  Most of the farmers up that way are clearing out their pastures especially buck brush.   Note  Dr. Pattons, Sodderts and Popham's.  They have cut most of trees and brush and plowed the ground.  We get another letter from tenant Oakley at Loxa needing repairs &c.  on house.  Order balehay (sic) bu oats from I.B.M. P.M.  Have had mare at Nickles service last Thursday night.  Gob 8.30

Clear and  pleasant day.  Driving round 4th ward in forenoon trying to connect up hold list.    Good many in town P.M.  Bert called while eating dinner.  Pay Rutherford 1.25 PM.  W. Decker 9.45 for wood cut @ 60.  Still owe him 6.00 (?) having cut 40 3/4 cord.  Comer in wants me to come down and divide lumber.  The "Citizens" convention in 1st. ward nominate W.H. French to run against M. White Rep.   Politics talked a good deal on streets today.  Went up to French Davis office at night to take poll book.  Settle with Bill Meyers for ham bought last week.  Meyers says he will work Monday.  Talk for license a good deal mixed .  Go bed 10 PM.

April 11-13, 1888 in Charleston, Illinois

Clear to f(?).  Did not rest well last night, cough  bothers me a good deal.  Lameness from riding has left me.  Am still figured on the sawmill project.  Myers came to work at 7 AM and worked most of day.  Lost say an hour or more quitting at 11.15 and began at 1.15 P.M.   Pat Barton does not want to sell his la(?).  Talk with Dunbar in P.M.  Advises me to get gas well lot for sawmill.  Pay Rutherford  order for $3.00 and J.L.  Hengeen $1.00.  Uncle John was in in morning and thinks sawmill a good plan.  Cold getting better.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Clear east wind, chilly day.  Walk down to gas mill lot think it would be quit suitable  for sawmill.  Dr. Patton  tells me it belongs to Geo. Goodman.  Tue went uptown to buy some things in P.M.  I stopped at Knocks Shop toward night.  Myers spades garden all day.  Gobed 9.30 P.M.

Clear pretty heavy white frost.  Order case of Bethesda water.     Walked down to Geo Goodman's  to see him about a lot.  Myers did not work today.  Mrs. Rogers ironed.  Maggie began taking drawing lessons of Miss Johnston.  Republican nominate Ed Wiley for Council in this ward against Ben Maxwell.  Third ward have put up D.H. Dowling and Frank Vail.  2nd C.E.  Bishop and A.W. Alebenny.  They are running Capt. Bobbins  and W. C. Fuller for police justice.  Go bed 10 P.M.

April 3-6, 1888 in Charleston, IL

Clear day.  Howard Robinson died last night.  I was on foot all day  doing what I could, but was beaten 90 votes.   The whole Dem ticket elected excepting T. Stoddert for supervisor 53 maj.  Uncle John was in all day  and stayed all night.  Rutherfords were up and I paid them $4.50 in orders.  The result of the election was a surprise to most people.  Stay up till they counted out.  Went to bed 1 A.M.

Clear.  Al Crass helps pile walnut lumber in morning an hour or two.  Howard Robinson was buried today.  Uncle John says I better fence a part of my land and he will send a lot of cows down there in May.  Would have gone to timber today if had not been so tired.  Baby sick all day and in night.  Pleasant day.  (The print runs off the page).

Some cloudy, strong S. wind, blowing all day.  Thunder shower from W. about 4.30 PM. raining about half an hour.  Thought of going to the timber, but looked too much like rain, Rutherfords were up and I let them have the lot of old corn I had left.  Bruner called P.M. and paid  me for a set of switch ties which they took up this week.    Says I can put out all the ties I want to before June 1. Advises me to Meyers works  8 hours spreads manure, plants potatoes in bottom.  1st row east plant deep with S. phos.   2d. row shallow with phos.  3rd row shallow without phos.  4th row peas N. end phos.  Put in city bill at night 37.53.  Gobed 9 PM.  Paid tax on nine bbls. b&h.  Whiskey $350.70.

Clear day with northerly wind.  Meyers works all day.  Tear down old hog pen and do good deal of cleaning up.  John Spurgeon brings up 387 ft  2 in. Planks.  Got poll list of F. Blankbenbakee.  Remit Sucion Sturm 1.45 being amt insurance bal on 7 P  whiskey B &h.  Tue not feeling well.  Have had very bad cold in head self for day or two.  Gobed 10 PM.

Cloudy and foggy and raining. Some thunder in night.  Winds get in S.W. and finally NW and cooler.  The ther was up to 57 about 10 AM but soon fell.  Tue washes today getting about sick.  Rep. Co. concriction(sic)  for opportunity delegates to state convention held this P.M.
Sell Mrs. Norfolk a cord of wood.  The wood is about gone, have about a half a cord left.  Self and Tue both have sore throat.  Sowed flower seeds and GC tomato in hot bed today.

Cloudy, with light N. wind.  Rec. 27 cts. for Joseph Harris over charge freight  for fertilizers.  Rutherford called this AM.  They are in a hurry to get down to the timber and to work.  Still sore throat.  Republicans nominate Tp. officer T. Stoddert Jr.,  Sup., Geo. Rosebraugh Asst.,   C. Gramesly Col.,   Riley Rennells assessor, L. Coventon commish.  The Dems. have Ay Foyor sup.,  M. Cormer Col.  B. E. Brooks Ass., Bill  Brown Commissioner.  Comer in town.  Buy the walnut lumber on yard of him @ 1.00  per 100 for his interest.  Finish up the wood.  A crowd went out to cemetery and disinterred Bill Morris's body.  Some "medium" having said he was alive.  My throat felt very bad and got Dr. Patton to look at it.  Didn't  seem to think much the matter.  Gobed 9.30 P.M.

Cloudy, n. wind.  Abt. half an inch light snow on ground fell sometime duriing night.  Agree  to get some posts out to Linder place but suple gives it up after hauling about half a load.  He brought  me a couple loads manure, working from 1 P.M. till about 4.30 with team.  Rutherford called and say they will go down to the timber tomorrow and go to work.  The roads are worse than they have been this year.  Comer was up town and was working hard for the collectership(sic).  Friends think my  chances are pretty good.  Tue ironed.  Cloudy day, damp with  N. wind.  Good many call for wood now I am out of it.  People can barely get to town with empty wagon.  Go bed  9.30 PM

Dark cloudy morning W. wind.  Rutherford called while we were eating breakfast.  Makes batch yeast.  Snider stopped an hour or two in P.M. having been at Mattoon.  Wils Goodman buys a cord of wood.  Rutherford Bros. call at night to see about going down to timber.   It began to snow about dark.  about an inch fell.  Dark cloudy day with SW wind.  Sat up reading till 12 oclock Wrote to Uri.

S.3.  Rhoda wash early &c.  Hitch up AM driving out to Watson corner.  Went south road returning N.  There was no mud nor water anywhere.  Tue worried because Phebe does not write.  Mare had bad scare near Huffmans - telephone men stringing wire.  Tue potted ferns taking one to Mrs. Bell.  The Bell's are building same.  Mrs. K he R has new tenant-moved in yesterday.  Rhoda irons P.M.  Self "rest" most of P.M.  Tue grunting think caught cold last night.  Ray does chores and let him go.  Paid in full 75 cts.  Promised to come Sat. morn and work a while.  Part clear day with violent southerly wind and signs of rain toward nigh.  Official report rain tonight and colder.  Sprinkle rain 5.30 P.M.  Read A. Clear.  White frost.  Snider, MClasky and Rutherford each had load of old lumber.  Easton brings me load of wood.  Engages Bill Halton to cut my wood next week and put in woodhouse. @ 1.50.  Get return from B & L of Bbl wh withdrawn.  No word from apples yet.   Pleasant day S wind Kate Myers over at night.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Clear.  Baby feels much better.  Sprinkle of rain in the night and turns colder.  Wind gets in north and  snow flying most of the P.M.  Apples and Quinces from Donay arrives.  No.2  apples don't  suit very well.  Receive dispatch from Donay saying will ship Monday.  Wire him to substitute.  Comer in town and whole gang.  Snider hauls a load of lumber which is about the last.  Go to bed 10 pm.  Clear night.

Clear.  Maggie and Phebe go to Sunday School.  Clear and cool, E. wind.  Went down to tell Mrs. Deckerman not to come tomorrow as Mrs. Young will wash for us.  Phebe went with me.  Go to bed 10 P.M.

Clear.  Baby felt badly in night.  Think it is a cold.  Mrs. Dickenson comes to iron.  Maggie  and Phebe took their diner to school.  John Snider and Rutherford say will haul  load of lumber tomorrow.  Hear that Latta has bought out Jo Landers share of the business.  Very chilly.  Clear with N. wind coldest day since last winter.  Baby not  very well , worse at night and Tue slept down stairs.  Think of moving whole family down soon.  Gobed 10 P.M.
