February 15-18, 1913 in Charleston, IL

15.  Saturday.  6 AM.  Ther. 34.  52.  42.  = 42 2/3
Part cloudy, red clouds. S.3.  Tue irons most of AM. and Keeps on.  I sort out old junk in shed and clean off mare AM. John Simon calls after dinner reporting everything all right at ranch.  One King from Diona called PM wanting to cut some  poles , I refused.  Phoned J.E.W. morn for same. Hitch up before  Ray came and he went with me to Interurban fore for Bill in same.  Stopping at P.O., coming home.I got letter from Phebe she was yet in Chicago at Gages 12th inst.  Later I drove out to Huffmans returning S.road.  It is not as muddy as I supposed.  They have been erecting frame for big water tank opposite Interurban on Monroe street since I was down that way Jan. 30.  Ray rode to Division with me.  Tue went up town after I got home about 6 P.M.  Several dogs have been poisoned in neighborhood lately.  The roads not so bad as supposed.  I get Andrews bill today it is much larger than had expected.  It includes all at farm.  Roof rc for barn and roof and stripping for BC shed also current and lumber for Extension WC SW corner of house and repairs  on Loxa house.  Mostly clear till P.M. wind got NW and cloudy.  Papers predict cold wave.  The snow is gone except patches on North hillsides.  Go bed 9 P.M.

16. sunday. 7 A.M.  Ther.  30.  50.  44. = 41 1/3
cloudy N.2.  Tue retired latae last night leaving cellar lights on  they burn till 7.30 AM.  Tue slept till nearly 9 oc.  She attended church with Mrs. Brooks AM.  Getting paper which is now 5 cts. instead of 6 as formerly for a year or two past.  She went calling with Mrs. Brooks P.M.  I wait for Ray to come to help hitch up but did it self before he arrived.  I drive SW Keeping pave and gravel till turn E. OakRidge SH.  Chilly driving roads generally muddy wind getting in S. clouds up.  I got home 5.30 Tue later.  Tue writing Marie tonight.  The lights were all out for a while about 9.  Mostly clear, varible winds light rain 9 P.M. and later.  Gobed.9.

17.  Monday. 6.30 AM. Ther.  34. 54.  40. = 42 2/3
Clear. N.1.  Lt. wh. fr.  The rain last night (.10) thin ice.  Tue still writing to Buddy and sends package by Parcel this morning.  Tue  over to Bells P.M.  Mrs. Grove called 2 P.M.  Public service Co have been cutting their useless poles today on 6th St.  The city taxes every pole standing.  I hitch up about 4 P. Drove E. on  Westfield road a mile.  They have been scraping it.  The roads are worse than yest.  Met J.E.M. near Crums store.  Clear Day light variable winds becoming southeasterly at night.  Gobed 9.P.

18.  Tuesday.   6.30. AM.  ther.  36.  62.52. = 50
Clear S.E.3.  There was strong southeasterly wind all night.  One of young men (Lee) roomers thinks has measles and keeps his bed A.M.  Tue prepariing for R.C. Function at Jo Reats this P.M.  I hitch up 11 A.M.  Find the terrapins in box since last Aug. doing well.  Supposed they were dead.  Lee finds he has Measles and goes home with friend to recover P.M.

December 30, 1912 and 1887 in Charleston, Illinois

30.  Monday 6.15 A.M.  Ther.  32.  46..  40 = 39 1/3
Part cloudy.  W. 5. light wh fr No ice.  It clears off and  and remains  with strong southerly wind.  Tue gets letter from Muggs.  Didn't hitch up.  Went up to Brown's for shave (pd.) Went on up to  Paynes Pd. account to date 1.85.  P.B. Linn called P.M. and pay him Andrews Brothers, Mattoon a/c for lumber and roofing 43.65.  This is stuff for shed which Harman got last Aug. 29.  Linn used to work for J.B&JB Hill in grocery along win the 70's.  Alfred came doing chores and visiting.  Pay him 1.00 overpaid 20c.  Buddy got box from Reasors today for herself and Charles.  Get calender and almanacs at Payne's.  Mrs. Coon called P.M.  Mort and Kate  were over at night. Mort has been sick for week or so.  Tues cold continues pretty bad but round all day as usual.

1887

30.  Friday.  6.30  A.M>  Ther.  15.  20.  31. 
Mostly cloudy and soon because entirely so.  Fast S.E. wind.  Phebe very restless in night, btu seems  brighter this morning.  Tue has not made much headway in weaning Marie.  Her teeth  are so bad she does not like to stop her at once.  Sell J.P.Case 2 Bbl apples.  F Moffett 1 Bbl leaving only 4 Bbl all Russetts.  Wright took  thric (sic) of these and took others self.  Gray brought them home and put in cellar about dark.  This ends the apple transaction.  Began snowing about 9 A.M. continuing most of the day with strong wind from S.E.  Between 2 and 3 inches, till turning to sleet at night growing warm and raining before morning.  Phebe feeling pretty bad at night thought of sending for Dr. but didn't.  Paid up Minton  & Sons in full 6.22.  Gobed 11 PM.  Tue ironing.

August 28-29, 1912 in Charleston, IL

28.  Wednesday.  6 AM.  Ther.  60  90.  80. =76 2/3
Most clear S.3.  I rubbed R with new remedy last night.  I hitch up but did not feel able to drive much.  Find not so well as I had thought but have pretty good appetite.  Harman came in AM giving me check for my half of oats 1837 1/2 bu on 60 acres @ 25c.  He stated that there would be more for some damaged which he took un-threshed.  Wants to cut second crop for seed.  Tue gets letters from Muggs and Marie.  Both arrived safely at destinations.  Tue called on Mrs. Curd P.M.  I drove down to Grimes corner to water mare P.M.  Am trying to kill the fleas on Jack and he seems better.  Self feel quite poorly.  Have quit taking Starrs meddy. Tue and Mrs. Brooks attend P. meet at night.  Mostly clear day clouding up by night, light rain(.02) and great amount of lightning.  The electrical display lasted most of the night.  Go bed 9.00 P

29.  Thursday.  6 AM.  Ther.  68.  92.  74. = 78.
Part cloudy, SW. 2.  There were lightning and thunder much of night.  We were married 35 years yesterday.  I went up for shave, Brown's , after breakfast today.  settle 30c.  Met Andy Moon at shop;pay him my share partition flood gate 2.14.Ask permish for LaFayette commissioners  to join road line of tile to line to branch which grant.  Rhoda washing.  Harman phones that need more lumber out there., while I away promises to phone same move but didn't.
My trouble not so bad today except for the heat which nearly prostrates me.  Clear day with light SE to NE. winds, heat oppressive.  I hitch up toward night and drive to Fritzs but could not see him.  Tue up to band concert at night.  Go bed 9 P.M.  Mare to Nickles.

23.   Friday,     5.30 AM.  Ther 58.  82.  66. = 68 2/3
Clear.  N.W. 1 Emmett came early and worked all day , but did not finish grass.  Walter came 7 AM to attend fair a day or two.  Tue and girls iron like thunder AM.  Muggs and Walter and Marie attend fair PM.  My rheumatiz  worse if anything.  Jack still in doubt but is able to drag around.  Think his left hip fractured.  Mrs. Zay Johnston died last night.  Learn of death of  John A. Hill a former resident, at Seatle(sic).    Bud and Walter had callers at night.  Muggs away till after bedtime.  Bud and Tue up town for castor oil and plaster for me.  Mostly clear day with NWly wind go bed 10 PM   Mare pasture.
