Cloudy and  Damp, wind N.E got a lot of things for Milt and Jo Handly  Start at 9 getting  then before noon.  Milt hauling logs Warren helps in PM.  Henry and Frank saw lot of logs for  long posts.  Begins to rain fine before 10 AM. and kept it up  all day.  Mort began sawing logs.  Tom Spurgen started hauling in P.M.  Wind fresh from NE  Gobed 10 P.M.

26.  Saturday 6 AM.  Ther at C.  47.  45.  43 = 45

Cloudy N. wind Old Mare lost her colt last night and Milt buried it.  She has not been well for sometime and what little we have worked has seemed to hurt her.  Started for home about 8  AM.  went to Wilbers on Fox Ridge, but no hay   Feed of all kinds is scarce on east side in the thin sod diet.  Warren and Milt want to 'work' on logs.  Got home about 11 AM.  Cold damp day.  Trade duller than usual  Mrs. Clark and Hat here at night.  Gobed 11 PM.

Cloudy NW wind.  Tue and self went to ranch got there about noon  Ate dinner by burning  brush heap.  Warren and Geo Martin there  went by  Walkers and back by Pophams  Popham will sell me a stack of hay  Can get straw of  Jim Cassady.  Cloudy  all day and chilly  Got can oysters at night at Shenens.  Roads nearly dry some muddy places one near Mt Zion  Gobed 10 PM

About clear wind S.E  Had fine lot of oatmeals for breakfast from Jack Colby.  Bill Hatton still working at wood.  Drive down to H.G.'s and to Rictus Elevator  Corn 30c today, here.  Richter will sell me Hillsborough nut coal @ 2.00.  Theodore Arnold unloading car.  T.A. speaks of buying out Ira Brown.  Simone and Warren went through with loads (2) of lumber for Popham.  Pay C. Wiley Calves check $10.00  He claims mistake in my favor of $5.00 and returned $5.00.  Pay S.H. Record check for tile 18.20  Pay Binkly bill at stable for clipping horse last spring, 1.75.  Walk down 5th St. where they are putting in heating pipes.   Fifth St has been blocked for a week or so with this  business.  Girl Lillie Beck Calls AM to hire.  Order 10 to 12 tons coal of Richter, Hillsborough nut.  Democratic rally at gospel tent tonight,  was up town till 10 P.M.  (A smudge?) 30 c at Loxa.  Al Newby tells me  Jo is at work shucking  Clear day southerly wind  Gobed 10.30

Mostly clear.  fast load coal comes before done breakfast.  I had to shut them off on the slack.  They then claimed to screen it.   7 loads running about 1 1/2 ton to load.  Bill sawed wood all day getting done with sawing.  Took Tue  over to Reading Circle at G.B, Griffins P.M.  Maggie gets ready  and starts for Chicago on excursion starting 2.40 AM (27)  She stayed at Mrs. Blairs till train time  Many went.  Fare only two dollars.  Tue feeling badly all day.  Clear day SW wind.  Repub rally at night.  I was up town till nine O's Mort and Kate over.  Tue drives down to Martha's but couldn't get her to work for her.  Monday.  Gobed 9.30 P.M.

Heavy fog.  Calm.  Alarm of fire in night, Starrs Restaurant.  Bill worked at wood getting Kindling into cellar settle with him P.M. 6.85  He will put in the wood Monday  Simons has been shucking corn this week.  He and I went to Briggs to count up fences  Met Ira Brown and we have a sort of settlement only partially and no money paid.  Pay Simon One Dollar on hauling from pocket.  I drove out SW of town looking for mushrooms.  Found nothing but Armillaria Melleus  or something resembling it.  Pay coal oil bill $1.55  John and Warren brought up lumber part going on yard.  Gave Ira Brown book for his accounts.  Clear day light southerly wind.  Gobed 9.30 PM~~  Take Tue to  Hats after supper and went after her 8 PM

Clear S.E.1.  Decide to go Loxa and start 6 AM find Hugh with most of his posts set.  Mr. Oakley able to be round out of doors.  The baby has measles and can't  paper at present.  Drove out far as Darlings gate shut and return.   Meet J.O.L. paying him 3.80 for coal Feb 1912 for J.W.G.  J.D. clerking in their store at Charleston.  They didn't make land trade as reported.  Look at Charley Jone's fence and will use it.  Met Cliff unloading calf.  Says will finish breaking  (?) today has been burning some stalks on place.  I got home 9.45 fire as I drove in Brown house 5th and Jeff.  Emmett began on old house* yestereve (sic) and continued today.  Has not made much imprish(sic) yet.  Is cleaning out east rooms: will come in morning.  Rhoda and Tue worked all day cleaning.  I paid Geo Anderson for posts 50c.  Corn 5.00   Roads dry but somewhat rough.  One of my terrapins is dead.  Clear day with light S.E. wind.  Get Phelps Catalog today.  Mrs. Grove and Mr. over at night.  I did not eat  supper.  Sleep on couch till 9.

The Weather &c at Charleston Illinois for April 1913

Average daily mean temperature 54.04 Precipitation 2.33 in.  Mostly on 8th, 76: 9th, 57. 14 and 15  Precipitation 2.33in.  Mostly on 8th,  76: 9th, 57 of and  25th. 61.  Clouds 42%.  Very light white frosts 5,  14 and 15th.  It has been a good month for farm work and many of them are through  breaking.  Fruit trees promise full crop none of it has been killed.  Apple trees are in full bloom and nearly every tree is pretty full.  The roads are rough and were pretty muddy about second week.  Corn is 50c oats 30 hogs 8.30  Bill Hill reported a mess of morels last Sunday.  I have not seen any.  The wind has blown from N. 6; N.E. 2 2/3; E. 4 2/3; S.E.2; S. 4 2/3; S.W. 3 2/3; W. 3 2/3 and N.W. 2 2/3 days.  No snow and little thunder.

Clear.  S.W.2. Mare in pasture all night and did not come up early.  Emmett had to get her.  Drive up town and up by Anderson's orchard AM.  Apples are in full bloom and nearly all the trees load.  Other fruits about same.  Emmett worked all day mostly taking of land piling old lumber and lath.  The  frame is in worse condition then supposed.  Think I will have taken out to farm for posts &c.  Tue went to picture show afternoon and at night.  Emmett's Charley got jailed yesterday will have trail tomorrow.  I started 3 PM.  west but, mare so downsy (sic) return barn.  Have been feeding too much corn.  I study Phelps list and may order buggy in day or two.  Emmett will try to get Bill Hatton to help tomorrow.  Tue home from paintings 9.30

clear S.1.  Little dew.  Emmett and Bill work all day and get old house leveled and mostly cleared up.  Pay Bill Keck 1.50.  Tue went with Helen Hildreth to concert at Normal  I gave Emmett some of the wood from old house.  I ate something - perhaps cove oysters for dinner which made me sick all P.M. and night.  Mostly clear day with strong southerly winds.  Harman phones that through breaking and will begin planting tomorrow near A. Clear N.2.  Edith Bates called AM.  Phebe entertains her.  We have dinner 1.30 PM.  Harman and Preston call having been at sale N. of  town.  They leave lot of harnesses in barn  Roy leads mare to Siberts to remove shoes.  Phebe gets letter from Ethel Corey at Chicago.  Clear day with light SSW wind.  Red at sunset.  Ora Webb calls at night.  Phebe making phudges (sic) or something else to send to Buddy.  I did not read any at night.  Gobed 8.30

Bengner $2.00,  Aubain $2.16 Rall a/c in full.  Roads  good and big crowd in town.  Riley Easton brings me 52 Posts.  Pay him $1.50 for them.  Snider called P.M. but didn't see him.  Baby better P.M. but worse again at night.  Comer in town says will pile ties Monday.  Clear day with N.E. wind.  Gobed 10P.M.

Clear, but clouds over got a letter from Bruen saying would take 10 set more switch ties after receiving trace out which would do Jerry H.   Tue ironing.  Mrs.  Wentz over P.M., also Mrs. Feagan.    Tue sends Maggie to tell Mrs. Rogers not to wash tomorrow.  Settle with  F. Knock to date, he paying me $7.35.  Mr. Sutton went away last Saturday night to stay.  Glasco boys take possession of the Plaindealer today.  Uncle John was in till 3 P.M.  Saul Snider at night  says will keep my mare down there for something more than 2.00 per mo.  Pay P.O. sent 25.  Soup at Mcs 25.  Comer was up at night.  Says will send City and Coal Shaft bills  up  Wednesday.  Gobed 8.30 P.M.

Mostly cloudy.  W.3.  ice 1/4.  Tue went to church AM.  I didn't hitch up.  Had thought of going to ranch if pleasant.  Snow flying many times today and at night; but little fell however barely visible   Had to rush  fires a little.  Furnace keeps leaking fear it will give out before spring.  Tue attend entertainment with Mrs. Brooks at night at church.  Go bed 9.30

Cloudy  Foggy.  Mrs. Rogers comes to iron at 8 AM.  Told Sam Ray yesterday to put my mare on lighter feed at 6.00 per month.  Snider  took Ma home today.  He stopped here but she did not get out.  Harman brings jar butter  8 1/8 lbs. 1.65.  Took out another jar.  Mrs. Davis helping Tue sew in P.M.  Got lot of Couriers with Fannie's notice and sent to the relations.  Harry Holmes has damage case in court.  Trial this P.M.  Geo. Weber over.  Baby still very cross.  Tue seems to feel some better.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Partly cloudy N. 1.  T & Muggs continue to iron.  I patch around painting W.C.  get lower half over two coats.  Tue attends R.C. at W.E. Millars P.M ~  Muggs went for nuts with friends P.M.  I drove  late P.M. as far as Sam  Walters and return 5.30. Tue was over at Grove's at night till 10.  Talk with Bill Campbell at night.  The roads are good getting dusty.   Find the mare has loss a shoe.  Grace Sefton called A.M. gave her some grated meal for her father who is no better.  Bill Scott didn't call although expected him.  Have promised to report as to trade on Perkins room tomorrow.  Mrs. Curd's brother at Shelbyville dropped dead two or three days ago.  Mare to Nickles.  Gobed 9.30

Cloudy and raining began perhaps after midnight .06 to 7 A.M.  wind N.W.3  Tue and I had intended to go to Loxa early but light rain most of A.M. prevents.  Tue went  Loxa 3.45 car collecting West's rent and seeing Alva Armstrong about plastering.  I hitch up 4 P.M. and drive to lumber yard.  Have decided to put strip in W.C. and begin it at once.  Frank Balch cleans off of furnace and  adjusts doors- putties up all cracks.  Paid 2.00 ch  Helen calls at night.  I take mare to Nickles.  Mostly cloudy day with strong northerly wind.  Sprinkles rain occasionally AM and after dark clears off late at night.  Muggs out with Dora A getting home after we retire.  The rain amounted to .10 altogether barely laying the dust.  Gobed 9.30

N.W.1. heavy white frost.  Rhoda washed A.M.  I put up strip in W.C. doing a poor job get can flat white at Briggs cr. 50 cts. and begin putting it on.  Think will have to quit trying to do anything.  Tue working hard all day mopping &c,  I  felt very poorly and think overworked this morning.  Gus and George brought some eggs &~  Clear day with light northerly wind,  Mare in pasture.  Gobed 9.30

Clear, N.W. 1.  Get start Loxa 9 A.m.  Learn that Roosevelt was shot yesterday at Milwaukee.  Buy a  paper and get to Loxa say 10.30.  took Mrs. Gaines about a peck of pears.  She says Florence very poorly.  Drive round on back of place where eat lunch taken,  from there went to house.  Preston calls Cliff over.  They have (?) phone between.  Cliff settles some collections.  Collects  S of Haltons 3.00 and pays for  Tile at Loxa last spring 4.70 and some nails &c at Loxa.  See bill in back part I got 4.15 check out of transaction   Preston and Hamm an are anxious to rent the farm and will let them have it probably.  Cliff talks good deal about the B.C.  It is built and looks pretty good B.C. is selling $120 per ton.  Harman is fears he can't get more than a hundred for ours, funny.  He and Pr  shuck sack corn for me.  Cliff ties bale hay behind.  I get home about 5 P.m.  Clear day easterly wind.  Mare to pasture.  Gobed 8.30

Decker, calls to say that Ezekiel Easton will help him finish hauling wood.  Tue works to hard and gets  more cold.  Hat was down in P.M.  Mrs. Norfolk is very sick has been for sometime, with rhuematism.  got quotation of front from Dorsey today.  Buy veal 20 Cencaline .20. Clear,  N.1.  Light white frost.  Mort began tearing out S.W. porch 8.30 A  He worked AM at tearing out after dinner I order lot of stuff from B.P. A&Co for WC. but it didn't come till toward night.  Mort quit 4.30 P.M.  Tue went calling with Helen P.M. and over at  Groves at night.  Self not satisfied with way repairs are going to work out and think will have to change program a little.  Tue sells two bushels pears to I.B.M.  I kept mare at home turning in pasture as usual.  Self feeling worse than usual all round.  Clear day with light S.W. wind.  Gobed 8 weather over

The Weather etc. for Sept. 1912.  Mean daily temperature 67.9  Max. 94 on 3d.  .18 on 14th  1.68 on 17th .08 on 21st, .72 on 22d and only trace on the other days.  Clouds 27%.  Direction and duration of winds during the month have been North 3 2/3.  NE 1 1/3, East, 1.  Southeast 4. South 9 2/3  Southwest 5 2/3, West 2. and NW 2 1/3 days  The roads have been good except some muddy about  18th  all steams are running more than usual at this season.  One light frost on 30th  Weeds and all vegetation have made a great growth.  New clover is best for years  There has been little complaint of a poor catch  I sowed about 62 acres with oats.  There is not an acre of the whole missing corn stands up straight and even late pieces are ripening.  The frost on 30 touched the corn but little else.  Trees mostly retain their green leaves.  There are no fungi in woods non have them been many the season. Have had a few campestries from barn.  The fruit crop is light but of fair quality.  Have noted none pecked as yet.

S.E.1.  Quackenbush calls wanting to buy old house frame.  Tue about sick from medicine taken last night.  Tues meddy made her sick all day.  She is writing Kate.  Mare seems "off" today, think they have fed her too much.  I drove 6 P.M. on Westfield road crossing it  half mile or so getting home 6 P.M.  Mort came over at night to talk about proposed W.C. at SW corner house and thinks can begin it Monday.  Mostly clear day light southerly winds.  The roads are good becoming dusty.  9 P.M.

(03)  Phone  JE Mc for gal Monarch which got A.M.  I felt bad all around today with rheumatism.  Met Frank Wickham.  He is in Oklahoma on Alex Briggs"ranch".  Cottingham  thinks will have to take down furnace to stop leaking.  Cloudy day light southerly winds.  Rains lat at night with thunder.  Go bed 8.30 PM

Clear E. or S.E. have been keeping mare at home for past week.  She gets six ears twice a day and pasture at night.  Never saw flies annoy horses so bad.  After getting paper drive  E. to timber and to river Hill.  Left Jack at home.  He is not getting better very fast.  Tue talking of going out to Helen's to dinner but gets dinner and went out on 2.30 car.  Mort and Kate call an hour or two P.M.  Tue got home about 8 P.M.  bringing some ice cream from Helen's.  Ora Webb called P.M.  Dawson didn't deliver our milk.  Mostly clear day with light southerly winds.  There were a few claps of thunder about 3 P.M. from small cloud S.W. but no rain.  Everyday has been a scorcher for the past two weeks ~  Little air stirring.  The roads are fine and becoming dusty.  Gobed 9.30

Clear.  S.1.  I manage to hitch up but did not drive any  till toward night.  Another hot day.  I drove E. by  Huckaba's getting home 6 P.M.  Clear day southerly wind.  I drove to factory, for ice late P.M. have been without twenty four hours.  Tue  went over to Seftons after supper.  One Clemens who owns  the house back of us is repairing it expecting to live there himself.  They have been filling up holes on 5th St. with old brick.  Am reading  Maria Antoinette.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Clear, S.W.1.   Clemens is making quite extensive repairs to his house.  I hitch up early but did not use mare till toward night.  Another hottest day.  They are working fifth street back of us.  It has been very bad with washouts &c.  Met Parker near Dr. Walkers.  They have not worked at farm since last Sat.  I drove out on S. Mattoon Road.  They have graded up to the new bridges on both roads doing apparently good job.  Met auto at Cassel bridge and big traction W. of it.  Tue up to hear band at night.  Clear day. S.1.  Gobed 9.30

August 24, 1912

Clear.  S.W.2  Muggs went out to Park on 6.15 car.  Emmett came 7 AM.  Worked till noon.  Paid in full to date ch. 2.35.  He mowed yard.  Cut weeds in pasture and made a general cleaning up of grass and weeds.  Good man but has too much Co.   Complain of feeling somewhat better rheumatically but not able to attend fair.  I drove late P.M.  Pass Frank Balch's  They are still at home by quarantine.  Had heard from, Kate since since she got home.    I drove E and S.E. not meeting many people.  The dog Jack could not go.  He does not seem to get much better very fast: eats little, can walk if necessary.  I was alone with Charles at night.  Mostly clear day with brisk southerly winds.  Wells (Chas.) repaired lawn mower yest.  It works well.  Put mare in pasture at night.  Gave Mr. Bell rakings of back lot.  Go bed 10 P.

Clear.  N.W. 1 Emmett came early and worked all day , but did not finish grass.  Walter came 7 AM to attend fair a day or two.  Tue and girls iron like thunder AM.  Muggs and Walter and Marie attend fair PM.  My rheumatiz  worse if anything.  Jack still in doubt but is able to drag around.  Think his left hip fractured.  Mrs. Zay Johnston died last night.  Learn of death of  John A. Hill a former resident, at Seatle(sic).    Bud and Walter had callers at night.  Muggs away till after bedtime.  Bud and Tue up town for castor oil and plaster for me.  Mostly clear day with NWly wind go bed 10 PM   Mare pasture.

Part cloudy, S.W.2.  Light showers 10 A till afternoon (.20)  Fair P.M.  clear at night.  I drove to river old Ashmore road P.M.  Dirt roads quite muddy.  The river fordable but muddy and rising.   Return via Westfield road.  There are few oats unthreshed E. of town.  Tue and girls sewing  for dear life.  Rheumatiz scores record today.  I put mare in pasture.  Harman phones P.M. nothing special.  Tue went to church with Mrs. Curd night.  Go bed 9

Mostly cloudy S.2.  Mare had foot fast in wire fence for the third time.  I went Brown's for shave (pd) after breakfast at 8 AM.  Thunder storm(.43) held meat shop for an hour.I did not hitch till after dinner.  Jack Hurst reports big wind today at his place.  Talk Bill Decker.  Think can get culled ties cheap of Threlkald.  I drove E. to timber.  Thunder NS sent me home before ready.  Jack did not go with me.  Much cloudy today and threatening all day.  Heavy storm 6 P.M. and after.  The thunder and lightening were great.  It continued for over an hour.  2.10 inches.  this is the biggest we have had in for several years.  Took mare to Nickles after storm first time since settle.  The branch was well up and trolly(sic) line shut down.  Our electric light was nix all evening  gobed 9 P.M.

Cloudy S.1.  Alfred Smith came  mowing on yard till rain stopped him.  It rained much of AM pretty heavy at times with heavy thunder (.65) I  decided not to come up till about noon.  Tue got letter from Buddy.  She has decided not to come up.  I met Parker up town, says P. +P. worked about 3 hours at Loxa AM.  Bill Scott calls for fence Catalogue.  I drove to town P.M. and SW but cut short trip afc (sic)  thunder storm.  Get breeching at Frommel's.  Heavy rain about sunset with much thunder (.55)  All electric lights out till about 10 P.M.  Tue and girls ironing AM and sewing P.M.  Phebe is going to Chicago soon.  My rheuatiz has settled down to bad all time.  The furnace still down.  Gobed 9.  Take mare to Nickles

Clear N.E.1.  Shriver comes AM.  looks over roof  and gutters and will fix it today or tomorrow.  Old mare did not come up early.  I "hunt Harvey" again finding him down at  Elevator.  Says has got an engineer now and "thinks" can put up furnace at once.  I eat early dinner and start Loxa 1.30  Jack dog went having fit near Defenbaughs.  Went and return by Loxa.  Saw May and Retha at long range  P & P having finished splicing their posts will rest up a day or two.  Did not see nor hear from Harman or Burge.  Threshing at E.
