March 16-17, 1913 in Charleston, Illinois

16.  Sunday.  6.15  AM.  Ther.  22.  38.  30. = 30
Mostly clear.  N..W.  2.  Tue phoned for R.H. which they delivered.  Tue did not attend church.  She  roasted big piece of salt pork for dinner.  She is talking  of going down to  to Mt. Carmel  this week after  the young men get out which is promised tomorrow.  Mrs. Curd calls P.M. till near night also Mort and Katie.  Mr. Law stopped in sitting room while at night.  Ray did not come till quite late.  Part clear day with high N.W. wind and near freezing much of day.  Self feeling poorly. Gobed 10

17.  Monday.  6AM  Ther 22.56.  46. = 411/3
Most clear S.E.2.  Tue straightening up Lee and Law room.  They got out today .  Law owes 4.35 and 7.35.  Tue gets letter from Buddy the first for two or three weeks.  Cliff Harman calls P.M. and will get chimney top for farm at Geo. Shriver.  I decide to get my clover seed of IBM.  Will sow about 60 acres.  Cliff wants to buy  west 80 of place; but have known this for long time.  Ray picks up in front some.  Mostly clear day with strong SE to Southerly wind.  I have felt but poorly.  Tue went with Mrs. Brooks to a spelling contest at night leaving me alone.  Gobed10.

March 2-3, 1913 and 1888 in Charleston, Illlinois

2.  Sunday.  6 AM.  Ther.   4.  28.  24. + 18 2/3
Clear. W.3.  Furnace fire went entirely out and coldest morn in house this winter.  W.C. didn't freeze although forgot to "fix" it.  Dr. Dudley calls on measles patient.  Tue did not attend church, but went up for Sunday R.H.  Nobody called mostly clear day with brisk westerly wind becoming S.W. at night. Read Tom Jones till bedtime.  Am nearly through with it.  Tue read it after I retired 9.30

3. Mondy.  6.30 AM.  Ther.  28.  54.  42. = 41 1/3
About clear SW3. Hazy.  Am cutting my rations short and think sleep better.  The coal of last Tuesday bout gone.  Grace Sefton called AM.  Her father is very low.  They don't expect him to  get any better.  Harman phones that will be in tomorrow to see about some clover seed he knows of.  Florence Moon called P.M.  She is married and lives at Fort Collins, Col.  She has come E to get her mother Nettie Highland Moon from Janesville to Charleston.  She is paralysed(sic), and they recently got here.  Tue reports that Mort and K will be over, but they didn't come so I nearly finished Tom Jones.  Mostly clear till night SW winds and cloudy with light rain at night.  Gobed 9  R.05

2.  Friday.  5.50 AM.  Ther.  54.  38.  29.
Cloudy.  Wind S. but noon changed to west or NW and grows colder. all day;  work at store  two or three hours AM.  Cleaning up counter and desk.  Baby better and seems pretty lively.  Tue irons a part of the washing which she has done herself.  Brought lap robe down home.  Mostly cloudy day, wind NW.  Gobed 10 PM.

3.  Saturday.  Monday 6.15 AM.  Ther.  24.  34.  27.
Cloudy wind, North.  Pay Mitchell for Maggie's shoes 1.50 and buy  pair for baby 50c.  Settle with Alan Fisher wood sold him (?) statement wood a/c to C. Mason.  He owes 11.00  2.00 of it being for delivering.  Find my ladder lost over a year ago on roof of City Hall.  All Crass gets it down for me.  Draw off balance of whiskey B,&L. left in Bbl. about 6 gallons in all.  Caylor pays me for 1/3 cd wood by Bob Gileman.  Sold Dr. Hall 1/4 cd.  Mrs. Feagan over at night.  Go bed 10 P.M.  Cloudy NE wind.

December 15, 1912 & 1887 in Coles County, IL

15.  Sunday.  7 AM.  Ther.  38.54.  36.  = 42 2/3
Clear. S.W. 3.  Tue attended the Rardin funeral and church AM getting R.H.  I straighten up books and papers.  Sort over  lot of old papers at barn.  They have been soaking in shed for several months ~~  About  4 P.M. I drove S.W. past hog farm returning by Tom Phipps place.  Would have gone farther but lost Jack.  I got home 5 P. he followed in about an hour.  Tue was over to Groves a while at night.  Clear day, moderate S.W. wind becoming westerly.  The roads are fine and smooth becoming dusty.  Hildreth and friend call us up about 11 PM to stay the night.  They were on their way from Loxa to the Normal which they are attending.  Go bed 9.

15.  Thursday, 5.30  AM.  Ther.  28.  31.  31.
Went down to ties about 8 AM.  Crass does not show himself today.  Comer came about 10 AM.  Get  McKee and Savaley to help.  Comer has got  himself very much mixed up in length after and think about half of them will want sawing off.  We all quit at 4 P.M.  having got out of lengths.  Cloudy day wind W.N.W.  and fine snow flying most of forenoon.  Ther. stood little below freezing.  Went up to barber shop in evening.  We only piled about 120 ties.  Go bed  9.30 P.M.

Cloudy, S.W.1   Heavy rains toward morning .70 to 7 AM.   Feel badly but hitch before noon.  Tue went to church AM. and got  R.H.  I put 2 chicks  in crib last night.  It clouds off before noon after light showers (02) and mostly clear PM. with SW.2.  I drive 3.30 P.M. E.going to timber Ashmore road returning by south road before 6 P.M. not a sign of fungi in woods.  Tue went church at night with Mrs. Brooks.  Roads not much muddy 8.30

Part Cloudy.  I slept but little last night on account of stomach trouble.  I pass today without eating.  Tue wanted to call Doc. but than(sic) can handle case myself.  It was caused by eating two hearty meals to near together.  Hitch up horse in morn but did not use her.  Tue went to church AM getting R.H.  She doctors me up at night and think am going to feel better.   Much cloudy at times N. or N.W. wind.  Gobed 9

15, Thursday, 6.30 AM.  Ther.  57,  75,  63,
Clear.  Sent Bill for lumber inspection to Narrow Gauge amt. 186.45  Girls went to fair in morning with Davis folks.  Went myself before noon.  Came back with children about 4 P.M.  Good crowd for Thursday.  Pay Riley Easton balance on boards 3.70 check.  Father went to fair afternoon.  Baby cross she has just got her first two teeth this week.  Mosquitoes have bitten her on the face,  They are more numerous this year than ever before supposed to come from Eastin's yard which they have watered constantly.  Gobed 9 P.M.

15.  Thursday.  6 AM.  Ther.  64.  84.  74. = 74.
Part cloudy S.1.  Rheumatiz seems to be getting all over me.  I manage to hitch up.  My renewal to R.H. by Chas. Jones has not shown up yet. have been buying it for several days.  Last Sat. was last number with lable.  It has been renewed.  Rhoda washes AM.  I did not hear from Parker or Harman.  There was light shower 4 AM.  (.02).  I drove S.W. PM.  They are putting in concrete culvert on Woodson road so  I turn W and get around to Wrightsville and finally home about 6 P.M.  Roads somewhat muddy Gravel good.  I feel poorly all day and take B.M.p. at night.  Muggs spent night at Seftons.  Tue and (?) went uptown.  Gobed  9.30

Part cloudy.  Phebe  got off on time but had to run back for purse.  It was quite a task to hitch up this morn.  My rheumatis is getting worse and more of it.  I drove up for R.H. in morn and 4 P.M. drive E returning on town line.  Corn better N.E. of town than N.W.  The road on line very muddy much of the way.  Think less rain E of Cu.  Jack dog went with me riding much of the way. I apply plaster to rheumaleg today.  Mostly clear day moderate S.W. wind.  Go bed 9.30
