January 19-20, 1890 and 1901 in Charleston Illinois

January 1890

19.  Sunday 7.30 AM.  Ther.  39.  54.  58.  =  50 1/3
Cloudy, S. wind, H.G. supposed to be about sauce went up town and helped some about cleaning up.  Maunie here to dinner.  La Grippe very numerous in town.  Went up town toward night.  Learn that Frank McGurty died suddenly at about 5 P.M.  Kelly rode my mare a while P.M.  Light shower at 3 P.M. heavy at night Gobed 10 PM

20.  Monday, 6.30 SM.  Ther  15.  24.  21.  =  20
Strong W. all night Frozen up hard again  Went up town about 7 AM. to relieve Nick.  H.G. complains of feeling some better and comes up in PM.  Nearly every body is taking the "grip" Bill Jeffries has it bad also Frank Vail   Jo Curd and lots of others.  Baby sick all day some better at night.  Mostly clear day.  Trade some better  Sent insurance policys to Freiburg  Order  remaining 2 Bbl Bo A f(?)  Learn Woodrum was buried today  Gobed 1045 PM

19.  Saturday.  6 AM.  Ther. 15.  30.  30  =  27
Mostly clear.  easterly wind.  Queen was loose in barnyard this morning.  My throat very sore and kep(sic) me awake much in night.  Make print of pin hole picture taken the other day and had better success than expected.  Simons and Warren up with stove wood for thernolies(?).    They will work my land down there except west end of Decker piece putting into corn for half, delivered in crib there.  Good many people in town in town and roads getting smoothed down.  Clara got letter from her mother at Loxa that one of her children was sick and she left after supper to return tomorrow evening.  Tue and Marie went up town for grub &c after supper to return tomorrow evening.  Walls shows me where paper has fallen off north side of store room.  My  cold continues abut the same.  Throat some better  Gobed 10 PM.

20.  Sunday.  7 AM.  Ther.  36.  58.  45.  =  46 1/3
Clear.  Strong southwind.   Tue gets breakfast and dinner.  Tone photo of Kate's boy and break celluloid tray.  Hitch up before dinner.  Start out to Gaines' before 3 PM.  Staying there about an hour.  Got home with Clara about 6.30  Daisy didn't come.  Tue feeling very badly PM and at night.  The roads are nearly as good as in summer  No mud.  Clear day and about as warm as warm as it ever gets in Jany.  Gobed 8.30 PM.

15.  Wednesday. 7 AM. Ther  36.  40.  19.  =  31 2/3
Cloudy W. wind.  Light rain in night.  Uni drummer here buy 20 BlB 89 Mal- @40c.  Made pretty close estimate of amt. of  stock on hand for first time since last August.  (?) Skelly shot Lune Woodrum fatally in Laudes Saloon about 6 P.M.  Cloudy day and growing colder: light snow at night and strong W. wind.  Trade light   Go bed 11 PM

16.  Thursday 7 AM.  Ther  9. 23.  20  = 17 1/3
Clear, wind NW.  Skelly gave himself up last night.  Send Tom Threkeld a cord of wood at 3.75  Phebe went to school first time week  Mrs. Rogers here AM. decide to take washing home.  Tue went up town toward night  Clear day with N.W. wind  Wharton drunmmer here.  Gobed  11.30 PM

17.  Friday 7 AM.  Ther  18,  36.  28  = 27 1/3
Clear Heavy white frost, wind S.  Mrs. Perrill came in morning and spent the day  Kate here to dinner, also Uncle John  Mrs. Harly worse.  Tue was over there at night till 8 oc  Mostly clear day.  Trade some better.  South wind, Roads wearing down  Gobed 1030 ~

18.  Saturday. 7 AM  Ther, 24.  42.  35  =  33 2/3
Clear or nearly so with south wind  Alarm of fire at 7 AM.  Lune Woodrum shot last Wednesday night died today.  H.G. went home this morning with the "grip."  I had to stay at store most of day.  Bought blue fish of Geo Lee.  Rec 466.41 from Friskey for Boh Whiskey.  Trade fair  Girls over to Davis' at night.  Clear day  Go bed  11.30 PM.  Mrs. Rogers brought home washing.

0  0  +  Mostly clear  southwind.  Start to Loxa 9.30 AM.  Jo still grubbing cottonwood pond.  After dinnerI went down to Loxa.  McPhenon did not pay me any thing.  Today election in County to decide for or against county bonds.  People not showing enough interest to go and vote  Saw H.H. at Loxa.  He has recently got back from Iowa.  Drive down to Lloyds after getting home to pay for wash last week.  Clara ironed todau  Warm day with fresh southwind  Roads drying and getting better fast  Gobed 9 PM

16.  Wednesday, 6 AM.  Ther 34.  41.  30.  =  35
Mostly clear stron NW wind.  Clara ironed.  Mrs. Grove was over in P.M.  I work at sorting papers in back hall P.M. finished  Fine day NW wind streets becoming.  Cooney Scheyatt filling in where dug out.  Self not feeling very well all day  Gobed 10 PM  Return Cadle newspaper

17.  Thursday.  5.30  AM.  Ther  22.  25.  20  =  22 1/3  Cloudy northwind.  Snow flying most of forenoon  Didn't hitch up horse today for about first day this winter  Mostly clear P.M.  I try a pin hole picture and develope two plates at night  Marie and Clara watching me  This was a hard day to keep the house warm owing to strong northwind.  Tue and Maggie away at night till bed time  Earl Decker was up and I paid him 4.50 ch for 5 cord wood and 125 posts.  Gobed 10 PM  Buy box of Eastman dry plates at Ricketts  paid

-0+  Mostly clear N.W. wind  Self have very sore throat this morning  Jack Trobaugh works AM. putting in all the wood taking out ashes and hauling over manure for mushrooms pay him all.  Tue attends R.C. at Marshalls P.M.  Daisy called to see Clara P.M.  Mostly cloudy afternoon.  West wind and weather seems to be moderating.  Maggie brought us clock in place of one returned  Gobed 9 P.M. __
