July 17-23, 1888 and July 23, 1913 in Charleston, Illinois

1888

17.  Tuesday.  6.45  Ther 70.  87.  70
Cloudy and light rain.  Myers brought Tue  peck of small onions charging 40 cents  Pain i n shoulder all night warm this morning.  Clears off P.M.  Baby very bad today  Tue sent for Dr. PM  Tue and W.S.G. had a few words, he didn't come to dinner.  Myers promised to come and patch roof P.M. but didn't.

18.  Wednesday.  5 AM.  Ther.  75.  88.  68.
Clean and warm.  Baby no better.  Tue and self intended to go to Berts today but baby too bad  I went  in afternoon taking ma couple dresses.  Val Mount went with me.  Didn't see Bert got home about sunset.  Have been chewing tobacco today and owe W.S.G. 2.00 as agreed.  Bob Brown  Roail (sic) of lumber today.  Myers worked on roof of house and on fence at store.  Baby seemed brighter but cant say is any  better.  Go bed.  9 P.M.  Bim say sold cow got home.  

19.  Thursday  5.30 AM  Ther.  65.  82.  60.
Clear cool and pleasant.  Myers works all day at store finishing fence trimmed off doors &c.  Baby seems better.   Got up at midnight last night and boiled her some milk, Decker took wood to Jim Hill.  Learn that Levi Fleuemor is dead at Mattoon.    Decker boys will work for me  at 75c per day when I want them.  Go bed 9.30 --Kate Myers here all day.

20.  Friday, 5.45, AM.  Ther.  65.  85.  62.
Clear or nearly is.  Myers put in full day.  Put roof boards over cornices at store.  Fixed door sell to back door and worked round house most of P.M.  He has worked  2 3/4 days this week and allowing 1.00 per day still owes 3.97  on this month rent.  Received Shoppells books ordered Monday.  Still chewing tobacco but propose to quit soon.  Have been having our first tomatoes this week.  Baby improving fast and seems about well again.  Gobed 10 P.M.

21.  Saturday.  6 AM.  Ther.  65.  85.  68.
Clear.  Put back a  privy door at store and gave Kinayer Key.  Big Democratic rally in town today.  Fireworks at night.  Self not very well took meddy at night.  Girls and father went up.  Tue and self didn't.  Baby seems quite well.  Study plans for  houses all day.  Gobed 10 P.M.

22.  Sunday,  7.30  AM.  Ther.  70.  86.  72.
Clear day.  Intended to go out to Uncle John's in the morning but didn't go until toward night.  Baby not too well, think she caught cold last night.  Had last of chickens for dinner.  we got home at 8  o'clock.  Has (?) rather warm day.  Signs of rain at night.  Gobed 10 PM. 

23.   Monday 6.45 AM  Ther.  74.  91.  70.
Clear.  There was a total eclipse of moon  last night which we knew nothing of till the moon was missed.    Mike Miller got a few posts.  W.S.G. not very well.  Stay at home most of day too hot to do anything.  Drove with girls toward night meeting steam thresher two or three times.  Tue sent  her washing to Mrs. Weber.  Cooler night  gobed 10.30 PM.

23.  Wednesday 5.30 AM.  Ther.  64.  92.  80.  = 78 2/3
Clear.  SW.1.  Sibert sends  over old shafts to repair.  Alfred Smith calls to say
Rhoda can't wash today.  Jim Newman died yesterday.  Hitch up after get shafts.  Driving S.E. to Woods place getting home before noon.  My side bad all morning till about 10 oc. when it gradually eased up and better all day but don't feel well otherwise.  Mrs. Gaines called 2 P.M. staying an hour or more.  Retha is sick.  Clouds up P.M.  She will come tomorrow.  tue feeling poorly self.  Orders bu corn I.B.  Mare at home.  Gobed 8.30

Thursday, July 4, 1912  5.30 A.M.  Ther.  70.  90.  78. = 79 1/3
Cloudy.  S. 2.  Thunder, say 2 A.M. shower early morn (.20)  I oil buggy and hitch up early intending to go to country perhaps  to ranch.  It clears off before noon but I did not go off the place on account  so much firing.  It continues till 9 P.M. or later.  the crowd would have been larger with pleasant day.   Helen and children were in P.M. remaining to supper aug the fire works which touched off at the bridge on 4th St.  Tue went over to fireworks.  I work an hour or so in dark rounding up mare.  Mostly clear day with little air.  Go bed 10 P.M.

Monday, July 4, 1887  6AM.  Ther.  76.  90.  75.  
Cloudy.  Fix stove pipe in woodhouse.  Mrs. Laind washed forenoon.  Hat down a while A.M.  It rained quite a while in the night very slowly.  Kate Myers stays to dinner and most of P.M.  Rails called after dinner wants me to go down to farm with him tomorrow.  Celebration out at Fairgrounds, didn't  go out.  Father, Tue and girls went  up to see fireworks at night leaving me with baby.  Old Mr. Eastin got home this morning from Dakota.  Kate Davis was over while in P.M.  Gobed 10 P.M.  Light shower about noon.  Mostly clear day wind SW.

July 2, 1912 and 1887 in Charleston, IL

100 Years Ago

Tuesday, July 2, 1912,  5.30 A.M.  Ther.  70.  80.  72. = 70 2/3
Cloudy S. 2.  Tue canning some cherries she got of Mrs. Coon yesterday.  Charley McCravey died yesterday also  Cort Hayes.  Tue and Phebe work A.M. work  canning raspberries and cherries.  Rhoda's boy works a while with lawn mower.  He quit at noon promising to return in the morning. Showers A.M. until afternoon (.35)  I drove up to Dicewoods A.M. getting good  wetting instead of mushrooms.  There are positively no fungi appearing.  I have visited the woods two or three times a week since early  spring and have not seen a dozen altogether.  Mostly cloudy day with light southerly winds.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Saturday, July 2, 1887,6 A.M.  Ther. 74.  91.  75.
 Cloudy.  Hat was down in the morning.  Tue puts up a lot of raspberries red and black. Likes her stove better.  Rained a shower about noon.The first since June 31,  Comer was up in P.M. compare his count of lumber with H.G.'s then appears to be a shortage of about a thousandful.  Bert in at night.  Bought a gallon of raspberries at Mitchell's.  Buy fireworks for the girls.  Fix lot of silk butter at night.  Gobed 11 P.M.
