Caught flying squirrel with young.  I start home before noon going by Jo Monforts place get home about 7 P.M. very tired.  Buy spring tooth harrow of Montfort  @ 6,00  Roads dry everywhere  The fastest drying I ever saw.  Find Tue had joined Presbetyrian (sic.) Church in my absence 10.30 P.M.   ? Surveyor went down today but missed me.

Cloudy S.W. wind.   Sprinkles rain in forenoon.  Self feeling badly all day.  Tue built a little fire in furnace.  Clara ironing most of day and feeling bad with neuralgia.  Jack Trobaugh will help me in morning floodgate and fence.  Cloudy all day with westerly wind.  Tue went somewhere with Kate Grove at night.  Phebe also out.  Gobed.  9.30 P.M.

Cloudy westwind (sic).  Jack Trobaugh fixed bottom fence except floodgate and helped oil buggy.  I went to noon train looking for Maggie but she didn't come.  Tue wrote to her today. Was up tp see Hodgen P.M. but he was away till Sat.  Find that Wall owes me $40 on rent.  the 5000 paid by Garrison being paid for themselves.  The Cols time for selling his place his place expired today.  I was up at Marshalls office.  Cloudy chilly day.  Play cinch at night with Marie and Clara.  Phebe went to dance with Carl not getting home till toward Morning  Gobed 10 P.M.

Partly cloudy.  North wind.  Dick Wright works 8 to noon.  Has worked to date 18 1/2 hours.  Today fixed flood gate and trimmed trees mostly. quitting at noon.  Tue feeling badly  Maggie got home P.M. has been gone since 13th (?). She is not feeling very well. After doing chores I go out to Gaines'.  Stay all night  Jo began plowing across branch for gate.  Roads good.  Cloudy chilly day N. wind - I ate lunch on road.  Sleep with Jo w room lying awake  most of time  9 P.M.

Cloudy Easterly wind.  There were light showers last night toward morning.  Maggie started again to work at Jenkins although not feeling very well.  Treas Gannaway tells me that no costs will be placed on taxes till April 10.  Garrison Bros indemnity bond does not satisfy me.  Get halter for cow Al Frommel 65c cr.  Call on Hodgen  AM Says will loan me money on farm as cheap as any body.  Mail check for 18.00 to Jo Gaines on wages: first I have paid him on this year  Partly clear day growing Tue went up town at night.  Phebe went home with Lude Record gobed  11 P.M.

Cloudy and snowing Slept late, was wokened by carrier with speed delivery letter form Phebe telling that she had lost draft $36.00 sent her the other day write to Phebe and tell Wheatly of the loss.  Mrs. Perrill and Kate came AM. and will stay a few days with us.  Kate is running a millinery store at Wellsville, O.  Snow continued all day from the S.E. about 5 in. damp and heavy.  Clara went up after chickens &c. at night.  I slept on lounge in sitting room.  Gobed 12 oclock after reading an hour or two.  Ground hog didnt see his shadow today.

Cloudy and raining  wind S.E. quite heavy rain most of A.M. and snow settles fast.  Mort and Kate over to dinner and stay till night.
Take two exposures of party in sitting room after dinner.  Sure came out came in P.M.  Kate Perrill not very well.  Wind got round to west toward night and grows colder.  Clara went to church at night.  I slept on lounge going to bed at 11 P.M. Alarm of fire  P.M.  H. Hildreth called PM but did not stay.

Cloudy with E. wind.  Pick out 6  old sheep and put in pen  Make trough for them.  Began to sleet about9 AM.  Start for home before 10 AM. snow and rain all way on road.  Raining fast when got home about noon.  H.G. arrived yesterday PM from hunting trip having been gone since Nov 5 with very poor success at hunting.  Rain all PM and in night-  Pay R. J. Stuckey note and int $287.59   Conclude to quit chewing tobacco which have been using since Aug.  Gobed 10.30 PM~

Cloudy and snowing about an inch fell which soon went  off.  Milt Drake was up horseback and started home 10 PM.  The river is said to be up swimming deep.  The Stanberry trial did not come up  Court adjourned at noon till after Thanksgiving  Trade pretty good.  Quit  chewing tobacco and began again.  Dark cloudy day with NW wind and snow flying most of time  Gobed 11.30 PM.

Clear, light white frost.  Hunt around for Geo Kellogg till nearly noon.  Went up to Jo Pinkers.  Kellogg promised last night to start my barn tomorrow  going down to today.  roads pretty bad but will soon dry out.  Got lot of nails at Stodderts and more at M. Mitters  I start about noon.

Clear.  White frost light.  Wait to work at fences N. end of yard in morning.  Commissioners came about 9 AM to survey road which they finish before noon  It measures about 226 rods.  After dinner worked on fence till I left at 4.45 P.M.  Maggie missed her chill today for first time in two weeks and feels better.  Cool day and some cloudy W wind.  Got home about dark.  Bought canned oysters at Lees.  gobed 10.15 P.M

Wright alone in 1st ward.  Orr and Patton for Mayor  McCum Treas.  Blankenbaker and Harter clerk  Theaker and Chambers Attorney, are the candidates.  License to sell liquor is also an issue.  The election went off smoothly no excitement and apparently very little work done for and against license.  License carried by 76 majority and the entire dem. ticket elected excepting Chambers.  Had horse shod in front at Rice's.   Buggy got run into by runaway horse.  Clear day E. wind  Go bed 10.30 P.M.

Lear or nearly so South wind.  The men worked 3 hours cutting wood and building a fence of it after a plan  of my of my own.  made about 5 rods.  Learn that Bob has decided  which is about as I expected.  have men return to clearing where left off yesterday and I start home at 11 AM.  Bob still works at old wagon and has said nothing about leaving  got home 2 P.M.  found folks gone to Dowling's golden wedding anniversary all but father.  Gobed 9 PM.

Mostly clear AM. wind N.W. spent good while this morning trying to  get some body  to wwk (sic) garden did not succeed.   "Dad" and I  sawed off some poling just to try.  Rake some weeds  in bottom which I  burn nearly firering fence and sidewalk. Jo Maistere spaded two hours in PM. and I plant couple rows of peas.  Tue feeling badly and cough  still very bad.  Bought her bottle of Dr. Pierce's meddy.  Mostly cloudy P.M. and chilly.  Milt Drake in town and I promise him N. house if Bob moves.  There is no school this week and girls are at home.  Baby better than she was  Gobed  10 P.M.

Clear, Light N.W. wind.  got 2 bushel orchard and 2 bush Blue grass of Bill Hill.  Had Herain House hull down some cull posts. for firewood.  Started for woods at about 10 AM.  Found Bob's folks gone.  Johnny and Enoch working at burning bush P.M.  Bob came home before night.   Tells me he is going to leave and advises me to get Milt Drake.  We settle up up at night leaving him in debt to me $5.00 which he says will pay soon.    Gobed 10 P.M.  Fair day N.W. wind.

Cloudy S. wind and looking like rain  Bob and self  make gate  boys set post for gate and finish wiring  fence of enclosure.  Dash of rain about noon.    Start home 1 P.M, gets cooler about  2 P.M. wind changing to N.  Got home at 3.  Tue feeling some better.  Phebe has got more cold.  Go bed 9 P.M.  Geo Tucker called at night to see about butternut posts paid me  one dollar.  Lost my cane on road home Wednesday.

Clear and heavy frost wind N.E.  I had to milk, father having sore hand.  The gang came in early and all want money which is getting pretty scarce with me.  Dr. Dunbar gave me a half pt. whiskey.  Hat was down P.M.  Went up, at night after butter  but could not find any.  The old cow is not yielding very well.  Geo Tucker finished up  the  butternut posts this AM.  Alex Fisher paid me .75.  Wm Grant pd. 5.00.  Cool morning , warmer PM.  Thunder toward night  with sprinkle rain.  Warren Decker hauled his  first load of ties today  John Kink has got out 121 this week and last.  Paid F, Lauder  bal 1.00 old a/c.  Order pair of pants of Winter to cost 7.00.  Milt Drake still in town.  Gobed 11 PM.

Cloudy and light rain most of day, which was needed for the grass.  Tue feeling badly all day but her cough some better.  Posted up clearing accounts at night.  Mr. Taggart called PM. and called for 1 1/4 cord.  3.75.  Grows cooler P.M.  Grass is growing and is about  two  three inches high in front yard.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Clear.  N. wind.  Baby had high fever all night but seems some better this morning.

Hat came down about the time Chas started for timber.  went home and got her work and staid (sic) all day  Bernice Anderson took a ten gallon keg.  Marie sick all day Mrs. Davis staid(sic) a while in the evening.  Go to bed.9


Start for timber 10 AM.  Went  to Walker's ford couldn't cross river so went round by bridge getting there at 3.30.  Bob gone to Bills didn't return.  Roads very bad.  Clear day strong N. wind  Johnny and Enoch working clearing toward west side.  Gobed 10PM

5.30 AM,  Pretty hard frost.  Bob finishing sowing around the house  Oscar Decker worked with boys today.  Clearing near the west line and cutting fence row through.  Bob hauls out what lumber I have  for fences, hardly enough for road fences.  Horse got loose and thought she had gone home, found her in pasture.  Start home at 4.15  roads very rough, but mostly dry.  Baby nor Tue, neither very well yet.  Jo Clark called at night and I sold him 100 butternut posts @ 5.50 delivered.  Clear AM and some  cloudy PM.  N,E. wind.    Gobed 9 PM.

6 Am.  Clear or nearly so send Jo Clark out  105 butternut posts.  Got to timber about 3 PM.  Bob gone to take Mats burrow home.  Men fired leaves along Hanley's fence but didn't do a very good job burning.  Bob got horse about 8 PM.  Walked up to where burned with Bent and Ed at night.  Gobed 9 PM.

Some cloudy.  Kelly washes lot of bottles and I filled them with Sherry.  Get back room partly cleaned out.  Kelly helped put some carpet in house P.M.  Vol is again after me to rent up stairs  Bob Brown up with load of stove wood.  Post up his account to date.  He's in debt several dollars for rent.  Mrs. Norfolk was down to house toward night for an hour or two.  McCormick white washes hall.  Gobed 10 PM  Appearance of rain in PM

  Clear with with fresh west wind.   S.W.  Intended to go to Salisbury early this AM to get description of (?)  which wish to change.  Rain stopped about 9 AM.  Went down to Salisbury and look at record start at 10 and back 2.30.  Pay Auf Vaughn 3.00  Kelly 3.00 Friday 4.oo still owe Kelly 2.75 others in full.  Steigman speaks to me about Pink  house.  There was but little rain down in Hutton tp.  clear day after rain.  10.30  Got some P. Green for potato bugs.

Clear with fresh W. wind.  Snider and children came before we got breakfast.  I packed up lot of glassware up stairs at store before dinner. Clear.  Miss Kurayer looks at room AM and tells what she wants.   Kelly paints lower roof AM.  Pay Easton 2.50 in full for make fence.  Milt Drake over from Terre Haute wants me to  go down to timber with him, can't.  Mrs. R. sends for washing at night.  Clear day and cool, wind W or NW.  gobed 10 PM.

Clear, wind easterly.  Baby got up about 3 AM but not to stay up.  Kelly came at 6.45 working all day clearing up back  rooms at store.  Pay him up all but 1.75.  Order 1.00 ft flowing from Fuller's drive down to Myers with Tue after supper.  says he will help me tomorrow.   Looks like rain at night mostly clear day with south wind.  Go bed 10 PM

Mostly clear day with SW wind brisk.  Myers came to work before 7 AM.  Work all day at Store mostly in round room.  Kelly didn't work today  went down to Mintons and Fullers afternoon to get some lumber.  Mr. Geo Dallas came for Hutton Township called P.M.  This has been about the warmest day so far.  Gobed 9.30 PM  C.G. takes off flannels.

Clear, wind N.E.  Throat better after 2 AM.  Felt very bad in morning but seems to be improving. Seph finished hauling 200 posts to Mrs. Linder.  I was up town all day, and am told my prospects am as good as can expect.  Uncle John was in and is doing me good out in the country as is John Snider.  It is said the Dems. are pretty bad scared all round.  Cool morning but cooler  but warmer P.M.  Clear day and drying fast.  Milt Drake was up in afternoon and appeared to be drunk.  Bob Brown agrees to pay me $2.50 for house in timber from Mar. 1.  Go bed 9.30

April 1888

1.  Sunday, 6.30.  Ther.  54.  79.  64.

Clear, some smokey.  My throat was better last night.  Think  a few small doses of salacin taken yesterday helped it.  Pleasant warmer day with  fresh SW wind.  Went to town with intention of going down to timber but gave it up.  Trim up  groffaer(?) in garden.  Tue went out to country  after dinner.  The girls went walking and W.S.G. stayed with baby.   There is a good deal of politics on the street today if it is Sunday.  Clouds up toward night lightening in N.  Gobed 9.30 PM.

2.  Monday. 6 AM.  ther.  42.  57.  42.

Pleasant day mostly clear.  Northerly wind.  Trying  to electioneer all day.  Went down to broom factory* and railroad.  Think  prospects for election pretty good.  Got pretty well tired out.  Buy ham at Bill Meyers on Cr.  Gobed 10 P.M.

*I believe this was located on what is now W. Vine Street which is N of  town.  I understand in later years it was owned by the Vaughn family.  Thank you to Brenda Mills for this information.
