Cloudy, northwind.  had to make everything covers today for fuel as am out of coal.  Chilly but wind not so strong as yesterday.  I start to country about noon south with some idea of going to  ranch.  Went west from Kickapoo bridge and brought up Loxa at 4 P.M. stayed about an hour and home by 6 P.M.  Maggie and Hannah Marshall  going with her to Mattoon getting home at midnight  Gobed 9.30

Partly clear northwind.  Jim Warren mowing yard. Jo Gaines in before 7 AM. after some things which he fails to take out  Took cistron pump down to Resons shop.  Forget lumber for platform W & T. give me piece for buggy reach which proves to be wrong one Jo reports Sorrel horse sick and I start out about 10 AM get jag coal at Richter.     Hen borrows planter and washes our horse.  John and Edith move.  Jo burns brush P.M.  in orchard.  Get home about 6 P.M. and leave buggy at Hartelter shop to be repaired by 9  oclock tomorrow morning.  Tue learns that  Clara Thurman is going home to Indiana.  He has been  working at Huttons since leaving us. [shorthand]

Cloudy and raining northwind.  There was light rain most of night.  Went up to Hartelters and got buggy before noon.  Jim Warren called owe him $1.50 mowing yard  Went out to Gaines P.M. taking time for whitewash &c.  Mrs. G has pulled off most of paper in house.  Jo Harrowed M. and is cultivating earliest piece corn this afternoon.  The horse seems about the same, no worse.  I got home 6 P.M.   Mostly cloudy sps rain oc. AM. occasional sunshine P.M.  Roads quite muddy in places.  Tue and Marie went to Groves late Thomas and Hannah Marshall here while evening.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Clear northerly wind.  Said to have been light white frost in places this morn.  Mrs. Owen washes.  Jo Crail scatters grass on yard.  Bunket sent word yesterday for me to come up this AM.  Saw him caul trade.  Talk with W.E. Hill about bottom lot.  Saw Clara on St. she did not seem to know me.  Get shave.  Pay Centers &c in full both (?), both firms . check $8.64.  Started ti GAines right after dinner.  Pay Jim Warren for mowing $1.50 on road to Gaines.  Mrs. G still "house cleaning" she whitewashed west room all over this morning and was getting the east one ready P.M.  Joe plowing front piece corn, which is about 2 1/2 in high has a fine stand.  Sorrel horse does not seem any better.  I got home  before night.  Mrs. Owens  worked all day  Cleaned out cellar P.M.  Mort and  Kate over at night.  Mag and Ph both away partly cloudy day northerly wind gobed 10 P.M.

There was light showers several time in night.  Tue had two or three bad spells coughing in night.  My fatted calf off with his feed this morning.  Mrs. Owens ironed.  Have talk with Jack Colby A.M.  Crail did not come to work as promised.  Much interest shown  shown in Decoration ceremonies but Tue nor I went out  Thought of going to Loxa but postpone trip till tomorrow.  Drove down to Kickapoo PM looking for fungi.  Didn't find anything worth while.  Fair day clear at night N.E. wind  Tue and others away at night.  Gobed 8 P.M

Clear  N.E. wind.  City  cleaning out ditch on back 5th street.  Say they will do grading next  Monday.  Start to Gaines 8.30 find Mrs. G still anxious for wall paper.  the small horse is in stable and apparently better.  Bill working Queen.  think can use him Monday.  Shirley planting B.C. west of Loxa.  Our corn a fine stand: (?) about 3 in high  I got home before noon.   After dinner get wall paper for Gaines at Parks and send over on local freight.  Bill Campbell rode to RR with me.  On way home drive north mile or two.  Most people have finished breaking and planting.  Or last not up yet.  CD Mitchell talks to me P.M.  Roads are good west.  Engage Jubal Jones to work tomorrow morning  Jo Crail has got another job.  Fair day partly cloudy and much warmer than lately  Gobed 9 P.M.

16.  Wednesday.  5.30 AM.  Mostly clear.  white frost.  Milt helped  about logs today with horse and we get nearly two thousand feet cut and down hills.  Milt loads wood so as to start early tomorrow .  Riley Decker and old man have been burning brush this week and have nearly finished.  Gobed 9.30 PM.

Cloudy and signs of rain.  Decide to have Milt help today.  Cut walnut blocks and head up to house  boys cut red oak tops getting several good logs  Settle on site for  shed after dinner.  Leave Milt to put in gate posts west of house  start home about 4 PM with Frank Drake arriving about 6 P.M.  Find that Maggie has been sick all the week with  hives  Hat here to supper.  Business has been dull since I left on Monday morning.  Mostly cloudy day and warm  Gobed 10.30 PM ~

Mostly cloudy.  Milt brought up load of stove wood.  Warren finishes Coopers  8 cent and puts some on yard.  Milt took goats and kids down  He and Warren will haul logs tomorrow if they can get Comers wagon.  Drove out to Uncle John's P.M.  but didn't see him   got black pup at Shirleys  Trade dull.  Maggie had light chill, has one every day this week.   Newly had runaway at night while unharnessing.  Uncle John is building house on Hawkins place.  Fresbie doing work  go bed 10.30 PM.

Clear  Pleasant day.  Maggie had a chill but lighter than yesterday.  The gang was up and paid off.   Milt hauled load of wood to Anderson and got drunk leaving stable for home at 10 P.M.   Bought  52 bushels of oats of Jo Whelan @ 26 c.  Uncle John in town after lumber.  Trade good and one of best Saturday we have had.  Kelly worked most of day at house and store  Walk round after shutting up looking for Mat think he didn't go home.  gobed 11.30 PM

Cloudy northerly wind.  Went to Mattoon to see Irene about H.G. place but train too late to talk much got home 2 P.M. went out to Gaines to take rods for wagon  He has shucked  two loads today. finest.  Mrs. Owens washed A.M.  Saw Bert in Mattoon.  Tue fired Clyde Ashby A.M.  He was no count.  Buy two cords wood of Henry Newell @ 3.25  Tue about sick with her eye.  Thought of going for doctor at night  Gobed 8 P.M.

Clear very heavy white frost first hard frost.  Newell hauls the wood and settle with him.  J. Simons and Warren bring lumber for Weth & Hardin.  Geo Weyth pays 30.00 for bill of lumber to W.&H., all delivered in car here  Mrs. Owens irons  Tue in bed most of day and feeling very badly.    Don't milk but once per day now  Meet Emmet Balch up town AM  Gobed 8 PM

Clear Easterly wind.  Look for Newell AM for more wood but didn't find him.  Tue  feeling some better today.  I drove out to  Loxa P.M.   May not at home when I get there 2 P.M.  Jo Shucking corn has two hundred bushels shucked up to tonight.  Yield hardly as good as expected  They will take it at Loxa Saturday @70lb  H.G. and Hat here at night: first time in good while  clear day and slightly warmer.  Pick lot of string beans out at Gaines.  Simons not in today  Gobed 9 PM  Pay off Winter note at First Natt. Bank 211.58 using Renes check 200.00

Cloudy NW wind  Intended on going to ran(?) today whole family, but too cool and  windy.  Maggie not very well, she had the hives at night.  I start at 9 AM for ranch, cold and windy and  thick with smoke and mist.  Cleared off P.M.  Comer has been cutting the timber along road to Handly ford.  White sow had pigs yesterday.  Milt  and family after walnuts P.M. and not there when left.  Clear night, light going for good  gibed 9.30 P.M.

Clear heavy  white frost.  Took mare to Dr. Montgomerys house but man not at home  Start for timber before noon getting there before 1 P.M.  Rogers and Riley cut logs in P.M. with good deal of hard luck, cut big sycamore in Fritz hollow but not sound.  Milt got in about 8 PM with hay and Frank Mote.  Clear cool day go bed about 10 P.M.    St(?) called at night saying wood take cattle up to Uncle John in Morn.

Mostly clear.  Tue feeling badly.  Simon was up yesterday and took out bitts for lumber  Tue and Ferd decide to go to Mattoon with Mort and Kate on 2.45 train.  Marie also went.  I drove out to Gaines and find them gone away so I went to Mattoon  Couldn't find any of my folks but Gaines and wife found me and she and children rode out with  me getting to farm about  10 P.M.  Jo came soon after on train stay all night  - Go bed 10.30 PM

Clear.  I left for home before breakfast.  Cow out all night and no chores done last night.  Clyde was  gone all day and all night.  Came 10 AM  looking for cow most of day.  Tue and I drive with Marie out to Berts toward night getting home 9.30.  Borrow 200.00 more of Irene giving her out note for $250.00  at 7 per ct  This covers 50.00 for Phebe and bal. on Minton note  Rene starts for Oklahoma Tuesday to be gone two weeks  We drove through Loxa on way home.  Someone threw at buggy.  Gobed 10 PM

C.  all AM. and leaves on 3.13 PM.  Train late.  A bad day for it.  Light rain or sleet much of day beginning at 7 .  She thinks of staying with Buddy about 10 days.  Phebe went to train with her.I intended to hitch up.  Had I done so would have left Mare at Nickles for night.  Freezing all day with Northeasterly wind, but into sleet toward night and kept it up till after 2 AM when turned to snow.  Everything covered with ice.  Gobed 8.30

Cloudy. N.W. 3.  snowing with 4 or 5 in. of ice and water on the ground. Ther. fell last night.  H.G. call to renew note to renew for 90 d. 35.00.  Cold water, Bill cleans out paths.  Pd 50 c.  It stops snowing 9 AM.  Harman came in after dinner and settles for several old lots of corn.  Pays 112.07 of 12.00 being for 30 bu. soft corn @ 40 c sold to him.  He brought us 1 lb. of butter.  I pay him 2.15 for butter, beef and glass.  After he left I hitch up mare to take her up to barn but phone them to come for her.  Precipitation today measured about six inches snow and sleet which fell last night and yesterday 1.57 in. in all.  Learn by paper that Mr. Marvel has been nominated for P.M. at Clinton.  Mostly clear day light westerly winds.  

The Weather &c at Charleston, Ill.  Jany 1914.

Average temperature 37.7.  Maximum 68 on the 28th.   Minimum 12 on 12th.  Cloudiness 64 per cent.  Precipitation 2.73 inches S(?)now say six inches.  Coldest day 12th. warmest 58 2/3.  The winds have been North 4 2/3; N.E. 1;  S.E. 2 1/3;  S 10;  S.W. 4 1/3; W. 1 and Northwest 6 2/3 days.  The roads have not been so bad.  I have not driven much and horse has been at nickles most of the month.  Corn is selling at 52 cts  Cliff says.  There is much poor corn last year.  Country butter 30 Eggs 30.  The ground is covered with say 5 inches heavy snow' an sleet.  Trees loaded with ice.  This wont compare with same of our sleet storms.  In Feb. 1869 much large timber was destroyed by a sleet.

W.2.  There seems to be little doing here today.  Phebe went up for R.H. getting a  later edition than usual which contains weather report.  The storm was pretty general in the north Central west.  I fix up my weather for January.  Shave self rather late P.M.  Jack dog is sick, had a fit in kitchen, also had one yesterday when Harman got scared.  We got letter from Muggs yesterday.  Nobody called  Phebe anJ.E.Md self spend day reading.  The ice mostly leaves trees an snow settles good deal.  Gobed 9.30

 them all well.  The snow gets patchy today but it  grew cooler P.M. after the rain.  Electric bill 3.90 for Jan.  Talk with J.E.M. as he passed in morn.  Mattoon votes tomorrow on commish proposition 1 or 3 .  Charley does chores and will return Wed. eve.  I made mush at night.  Ph bought same also.  Clear at night.  gobed 9

Cloudy and raining.  Much heavy thunder but little rain since 1 AM.  Tue did not get up.  She sent for Dr. Starr after breakfast, and remains in bed the day.  Mrs. Brooks calls on her P.M.  also Mrs. Groves later.  I oil up and put some washers on new buggy wheels AM.  Drove to big 4 depot twice  with Buddy.  Maggie had much trouble getting off but finally went with Phebe to Mattoon at 4.30 to take 6 P.M. fast train which proved to be four hours late.  Phebe got home 6.30 and last heard from Muggs she had gone to Louisa's.  Buddy and I drive N of town late P.M.  The rain did not lay dust.  Part cloudy day with Southeasterly winds very sultry.  Lightning S at and after bedtime.  Gobed 9

S.3.  There were thunder and lightning all night but think no rain.  Spend an hour or  two adjusting wheels on new buggy.  Was uptown twice but did not leave buggy on account of the heat.  Tue seems some better but did not get up.  Mrs. Gaud Brooks entertain her most of P.M.  Got cards from Muggs P.M. at St. Louis where she stayed the night and was just starting for Jeff City at  9 AM expecting to get there just after noon.  Take a little drive with Charles and Phebe at nearly night and take horse up to Nickles.  Jim Crawford came home with me and we came near a wreck with auto at cor. Van B. and 4th.  Clear day and night strong S. or S.W. winds.  Gobed 9.30.  Clear night with no lightning.

Part cloudy. S.E.1.  Ora and Phebe went at 3.48 AM.  tue up to breakfast and feeling better till bad feeling spill about noon.  She got letter from Muggs who arrived at Jeff Cy. (sic) all right.  I find both rear wheels of new buggy loose in hub and am thinking of sending them back.  Drive over to Seiberts but he is away.  The men at shop say it cannot be fixed advise returning them at once.  Today very sultry and mostly clear with light southerly winds.  Take Buddy and Charles down to check Phebes trunk late P.M.  Clara Digby called to see Bud in afternoon.  I got a letter from Harman who is enjoying himself around Geneva, N.Y.  I bundle up lot old newspapers P.M.  The weather has settled down into regular drouth:  Some corn late planted looks well but cant do long without rain.  The only place running water Sunday was in Riley - crossed at Richards bridge.  M & K over night go bed 9

Cloudy, heavy rain in night.  Self sick in night.  Baby better this morning.  Kelly works  - store A.M.  brought down "goods" and  some barrels.   Worked at home P.M.  Make gate to cow lot (?).  Mrs. Rogers washed AM.  McCormick paints in front AM. didn't work afternoon.  Rep. Convention in session at Chicago for past week  today nominated Ben Harrison for president and Morton for v. president.

Cloudy, showers in night.  McCormick finishes painting.  Get cornice and Kelly cleans them off.  (?) on old sideboard.  There was an alarm of fire  last night which proved to be an alarm sounded by authorities in consequence of mob that came on 11 P.M. train to lynch a negro confined in jail  for rape committed at Mattoon last week.  They hung him at I&StL tank down at depot.  (?) deal of talk in town today.  Baby was sick and cried a good deal in night.  Think it must be her teeth.  Tue sent Maggie for Dr. but did not see him.  Gobed 9 PM.

Cloudy.  Heavy rains in night.  Pay John McCormick  in full for papering and painting $10.40.  Kelly and self work on old side board.  Heavy rain most of forenoon.  Wind N. heavy winds most of day.  Very discourage able.  Kelly and self straighten up stairs toward night.  This is the longest spell of wet weather we have had for a year or two.  Kate Davis over at night.  9.30 P.M.

Cloudy and damp.  Heavy rains in night.  Wind NW this morning.  Baby slept better last night.  Miss Kemayer measures room for carpet.  She says I may leave ice box in room.  Kelly does not work today.  Remit  Bethesda Spring $3.00 - Knock and self fasten brackets on cornice with wire P.M.  Have about  decided to send old cow home.  Cloudy day NW wind: fine rain P.M.  Gobed 10 PM.

Cloudy wind N.E.  Kelly mows round house, weeds out strawberries.  Get sideboard down to house; begin cleaning up furniture:  move far corridor Knock and Sutton helping.  Was going to meeting  of  Electric light Co. at night but decided can't take any  stock.  Pay Miss Johnston in full for Maggies lessons 13.50.  Clears off before noon pleasant day NE wind.  Gobed 9 PM.

Clear.  Kelly works all day cleaning furniture and wood work.  McMurtrie says he will make shelves, Monday sure.  Doc Dunbar gives me a bottle of medicine.  Miss Kemayer wants possession Tuesday.  Pay Kelly check 5.00 still owe him 2.00.  Kate Davis over a while at night.  Went up town at night for shave and shirts.  Gobed 11 P.M.

Clear.  No gasoline this morning had to  borrow of Ms. Wentz.  Kelly  went up before noon and pretend to  scrub out room doing very poor job.  Drive east of town with Tue after dinner .  write letter to Ya Hadley about piling his lumber.  Roads are dry but somewhat rough.   gobed 9 PM----

Clear with SE wind.  No curculio, think  found one about last Wednesday and a few plums that had been stung then no more.  Had big  mess of mushrooms for breakfast bought of Geo. Modual yesterday.  Went there to perk horse with H.G. and W.S.G. in forenoon.  Talk of going to Indianapolis next Thursday to look round.  Drove while toward night with Maggie and after with Tue and Phebe.  Phebe ran against the  corner of the house and hurt herself, bruised her face and head.  8.30.

Rutherford order on N. McMorris for 1.00  Did not have my (?) with me.   Pleasant day, things growing.  Baby was very restless at night.  Gobed 9 P.M.  Decker hauled wood to E.H. Clark.

Cloudy.  N. 3. was cold when woke up owing to no fire.  Paper did not come but got a letter from Phebe.  It began to snow heavily about 10 AM and continued.  The  report in town papers yesterday that river rising and about reached furnace fires at water works.  This morn, no pressure, no water.  It is said they are shipping water from Mattoon.  I nearly finish the coal building fire this morn.  Order load W.Bros.& G.  It came about 2 P.M. 1500 lb. Tower Hill.  P.H. didn't come A.M.  By 4 P.M. the snow is .6 in or more.  I got now paper except Courier today.  The  storms and floods have been immense all over the west worse in Ohio, Nebraska and Indiana.  The mails are all "nix" W.W. shut down by high water.  River higher than ever before.  Reported thousands of people drown in Ohio floods.  Peru, Ind., Terre Haute and mostly any where. Helen phoned evening asking how was getting along.  I ate quite hearty sup tonight.  I was unable to to P.O. but as mail, have quit fora while would have got nothing.  Gobed 9.

Part cloudy, N.W.4.  I got up early - house was cold.  I ate little breakfast.  Jacks appetite seems off, too.  Ray came about 7 and worked hard till 8.30 shoveling snow &c.  I sent him to P.O., no mails and to buy paper.  The storm reports are getting worse.  Thousands drowned in Ohio and Indiana and elsewhere.  Terre Haute and nearby towns about as bad as any.  There is little hands and prac(t)ically no mails.  I got today's R.H. by mail carrier   Morty phoned AM asking if I needed anything.- I didn't,.  Said would be over this eve.  I made a bread pudding and some dutch cheese, both pretty good.  Harman calls 5 P.M. for few moments only.  Reports rains have washed fields badly.  Wants his clover seed soon as possible.  I went up town soon after he left to P.O. but no mail.  Return back way slipping in without Gs knowing it.Part cloudy day, stiff NW wind- The sun cut snow good deal.  Think snow 6 inches I slept on couch till midnight to oil and went to bed.

Clear. SW.2.  Not much appetite this morn:  take some biscuit and milk for breakfast.  Ray came later than yesterday.  He went to P.O. again getting nothing.  I wrote to Tue which carrier takes.  Got papers that were behind this morning.  The reports from floods &c. get worse.  Ray will come tomorrow morning.  For dinner had chicken soup and biscuit   Got letter from Tue P.M. written Monday.  I went to P.O. toward night.  No mail.  Clear day, fresh southerly wind.  snow getting patchy.  I took small can chicken soup for supper.  Gobed 9.

Mostly cloudy. S.W.3  Have not heard from Geographic since writing them with remittance of 2.00 Dec. 18.  Mail checks P.M.  to Fuller Bros 20.75 Coal  Tucker Bros 3.50 concrete basement.  Gray & Gray shoe bill to date.  Russell and Erwin New Brittain (stamps) for two front door keys.  Tue mailed and stamped  these letters.  I did not go up town.  Tue attends RC at Iknyans P.M.   Ray Bennett levels up stables.  Tue attends church at night with Mrs. Webster.  Fern N and Ora here evening.  I lie on lounge which we moved to dining room last week.  Look over many  old papers &c AM.  Cloudy day with light rain at times (.10) R. strong southerly winds.  The rains yesterday raised branch some.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Mostly clear W. 2.  Rene phoned Tue to come over to Mattoon.  Which she did  on 10 car returning 3.  Phebe ironing.  We got small box of N. Yakima Apples from M & C, from Buddy.  I had a hard tussel with furnace late P.M.  Ray helping.  This coal is very dirty, full of stone.  Bright clear day NW wind I did not get out.  Mort and Kate over at night till nearly 10 oc.

Mostly clear early S.3.  Wh. fr. ice 1/4.  Tue went to church AM.  getting R.H. I wrote two firms for literature on Motor Plows.  Fern and Ora call late P.M. making candy with Phebe.  I had thought of taking drive today but did not feel like hitching up.  The roads are reported very muddy except gravel.  The branch still runs  good stream.  River water muddy.  Cloudy day with strong southerly Part clear at night.  Tue attends church at night.  warm day for winter  Gobed  10 P.M.

Clear S.W. 3.  Wh frost. ice 3/8 in.  Rhoda came early and work most of day.  Washed took out ashes brought up coal.  Alfred not evident.  Phone J.E. in A.M. for same.  Hitch up and "deliver" same 3 P.M.  Tue had callers, Mrs. Curd and others.  We got box of things from Muggs.  My share was a large reading glass.*  I drove a little while P.M.  Too cool for pleasure.  All but self seem to have bad colds.  Friends call to see Buddies.  Alfreds mother did his work.  the roads and streets are dry and dusty.  Clear day S.W. wind.  Gobed 9

*I wonder if this is the one Grandpa Reasor used when I was a kid.  Does anyone know who in the family has that ?

Clear S.S.W. 2.  White frost, ice.  The loss of tobacco makes me drowsey. They get letter (card) from Muggs A.M.  Charles got Bud up 2 A.M. with Threatened cramp.  I  hitch up noon; drive later S.W. and S.  The roads are excellant.  I was  up town P.M.  Tue and Charles  on sick list.  Tue went up to  Dr. Starr for meddy for both.  One Mr. Marvel called to see Phebe.  We got card from Muggs.  Alfred came P.M. to do chores first time he has shown up for a week or two.  Think my new shoes pretty close.  Clear day S.3.  Go bed 9.30 P.M.

Clouding up S.3. ( clear early)  Ice very light.  the ground is frozen a little.  Cloudy day strong southerly wind.  I didn't hitch up.  Buddy got the paper.  Phebe went  to Mattoon with Ora returning 3 P.M.  Charles and Turrie (Tue) feeling better.  Snow flurries AM light rain at times P.M.  Precip. .15  I didn't hitch up but had thought seriously of going to ranch had it been pleasant day.  Go bed. 9 P.M.

  Clear.  S.W.1.  Sharp frost. ice. 1/8 in tub.  I start Loxa about 10 a.  The  roads are generally dry many ruts.  Gang of men repairing West of Frank Newman's.  I pass through Loxa to west part  place.  Mrs. Gaines gave me  large pumpkin.  I did not see Harman  Preston was shucking also Paul and another hand ate light dinner.  W. Crabapple (written in margine)  Find they are missing good deal of corn.   There are a lot of red pigs staying in field.  See that Harman has appropriated whole of N.W. 40.  Count 13 head of cattle in there today.  Jack didn't go.  Mrs. Galbreath came today.  She went uptown with Muggs and Tue at night.  Gobed 8.30 P.  Clear Day. varible winds.

Clear light northerly winds.  Clear W.1. Heavy white frost.  Ice 3/16 None of folks attend church. Maggie about sick and took meddy all night.  Mrs. Galbreath left for Terre Haute on 3-4 P.M. car.  We had dinner about 2 P.M.  I hitch up early but didn't drive till after 4 P.M.  Went down by Woodson place and home by  Wrightsville.  The roads generally dry some rough.  I met no autos in country but one or two in town.  Too cool for driving much.  Muggs  felt poorly all day but she is determined to start for Jefferson City, MO in morn.  Friday (scratched out) is Father's birthday.*  Tomorrow grandmother's.**  Go bed 8.30

S.W>1.  Heavy w.fr.  Muggs and Tue getting ready for trip and go to Mattoon on 10.15 car to  take train that does not stop here.  I hitch up early but could not help them much.  Grace Sefton called after they had gone as did Dora Alexander.  Muggs is to take near noon train at Mattoon and will meet Miss Wales in St. Louis.  Charley Smith came and chored. (er)  Tue got home on 1 oc. car and went up town till dark.  Self poorly all day.  We were alone at night.  Tue let her dishes go till morning.  We were alone evening.  It seems dull without Muggs.  Go bed. 8 P.M.  Shave self P.M.

Mostly cloudy.  Mrs. Dickenson ironed T. G. Chambers died this morning.  Start for timber 8.30 with Tom Knock, look over old lumber sold load to P. Snider.  Tom shot two squirrels and a rabbit.  Bill Brown visiting Bob.  We got home just before dark.  Found Comer here, been to Mattoon, didn't get any bills.  Wants me to  carry job of switch ties till January.  Easton begins hauling my wood to house.  C. not well at night;  Gobed 9 P.M.

Part cloudy S.!.  Tue , Maggie and Ferd busy getting ready for the function tonight. viz.* Ferd's wedding to Florence Purtill in Mattoon at 7 P.M.  They all went on the 5.15 car leaving me alone with house.  Tue and Muggs got home 11 P.M.  F. & F. left at once for Haskell, OK where they intend to live.  I drove N.E. of town A.M.  Tue got her new new dress of Mrs. Patterson and wore to function.  She got card from Mrs. Eagleston saying might call but she didn't.  Rene and Grace attend wedding but Bert is laid up with injury received last week.  Roosevelt is reported doing well but his case in much doubt yet.  I try the paint P.M. but fear can't do it.\\  Mostly clear day, moderate southerly winds with some signs of rain.  Make pankakes (sic.) for my supper and Jack's and go bed 10 P.M.

Mattoon.  Tue sends forgotten  skirt to Phebe and package to our late lodgers//  Rhoda washes A.M. and irons P.M.  Mort works most of P.M. on W.C. inside finishing for the present.  Roosevelt reported getting along all right, but has quit campaigning.  Bill Scott was down again to see about Perkins lot.  Talk with Harry Messick about B.C.  Says 122.00 the highest he knows of.  Maggie out driving with friends all P.M.  there is a great scramble for nuts of all kinds this year.  Clear day light southerly winds.  Gobed 8.30

Part Cloudy, W.2.  Tue makes arrangements with Helen by phone and starts for Mattoon on 9 car.  It began to rain light about 10.30 AM.  I had just got hitched up.  Let water in furnace and find it leaks badly.  Phone Fred.  I drive S.W. three  or four miles starting 2 P.M.  Saw several cutting B.C.  Drove round by J.W. Pierceys returning by Al Latta's getting home 4.30.  Tue came at 5.  She with Helen ate dinner at Louise's.  It clears off at night.  Tue attended prayer meet night gobed 9.

Part cloudy.  Think rheumatiz some better.  Expected to have to visit Loxa with bolts but they phone that Jones has them.  Tue got letter from Buddy yesterday.  She fears she can't come up while Maggie is home.  Muggs is expected today.  I drove to Siberts but too busy to shoe mare.  Drove E of town.  Corn looks fine S and E.  Kate, Stella and Libbie call P.M. leaving before 4 oc.  for Mattoon and Kate and Stella will start  for San Diego Cal tomorrow.  They have been here on visit for nearly three months most of the time at Mattoon.  I have felt poorly all day, drove up town to P.O. at night,  Tue gets phone from Muggs at night.  she has started home and stopped at Terre Haute for a day or two.  Cool mostly clear day, fresh N.E. wind.  Go bed 10 P.M
