Mostly clear N.W. wind some cooler.  Nick still remains at home  sent up word that he thought he would be able for duty next Monday.  I remain at store all day in fact have not been able to write up this record this week.  gobed 1030

Mostly cloudy went down to RR to see Sefton about Bbl of whiskey which came last Monday with only 12 gals in it.  Walked down to tie pile count 149.  18 of them are John Whites.  Have heard from Woods once or twice this week.  Warren brought up load of 11 ties.  Chut load  70 posts  Report John Simon pull onions  Monday dig potatoes Wednesday cut sprouts other days and probably work at ties rest of the time.  Uncle John brought basket of Poocerus mushrooms which prove to be good eating.  Say at store all day.  Trade good  Hat was down to supper.  31 silk worms have began to to spin.  Had on hand in all this AM 124.  Change 23 on hillside to another limb  Part cloudy day  N wind and growing cooler.  Gobed  10 30 PM

23.  Sunday.  7 AM.  Ther 54,

Mostly cloudy.  Was sick in the night but don't lay it to mushrooms rather to watermelon eaten yesterday P.M.  Starts to ranch at 2.30 P.M. getting there before night and went over to east field boys have not made much headway sp...ding this week.  Clover looks fine.  Warren decided he can't break my wheat ground.  Had 22 BushVictor potatos [sic.] and about 25 bush onions all in barn.  Sp Rain about dark  Gobed 8 P.M.

Mostly clear.  I had sore throat keeping me awake most of night and lay in bed till long after breakfast.  Drove east of town A.M.   Get lot of young Leoiota procerus which gave to Mrs. Dr. Patton also several other kinds clitoeybi  and Trichicholoma. Very close and warm  Sold Sam Weyth 10 1x6 - Paid $1.25  I drove out to Fairground toward night getting back just in time to escape thunder shower with light rain from 5 P.M. till after dark.  Feeling very badly self today  Tue and girls sewing.  Florence Moore went away tonight.  Gobed 8.30 P.M.

Mostly cloudy.  Phebe up early to go on excursion to Marion, IN.  Tue wants to allow Marie to go to Indianapolis Sunday on excursion.  Start to Gaines 9 AM.  Jo mowing weeds along branch.  I did not stay to dinner but went to Loxa calling on Mrs. Bridges for rent which didn't get.  Return Gaines through place.  Mash of corn looking well.  I didn't eat any dinner today.  Very sultry somewhat cloudy day.  Stay at Gaines till about 4 P.M.  Stop at Talbotts.  He gave me about 1/2 bush fine potatoes.  Got home before 6.  Oran Pierey rode part way too  town with me,   Took home a lot of corn beans cabbage tomatoes &c from Joe's.  Pay Jo check  18.00 on month wages.  Self feeling badly all day.  Roads good.  The rain on Monday morning was heavy at Loxa.  Met Shirley hauling BC[broom corn] for Downey  Gobed 8 PM.

Clear N.E. wind.  Tue had toothache all night.  Helen and Maggie got breakfast.  Phebe did not  come home last night, staid [sic] at Montgomery's.  Get Reasor to put in new  hydrant at barn which they finish 2 P.M. but pump in cellar does not work.  Tue feeling badly went back to bed in P.M.  I drove down south of town P.M. getting big lot of ?Psalliota two kinds, also a lot of puff balls.  I   left mess of PBs at Dr. Pattons.  Mrs. Patton sick.  Warm  AM but cooler and cloudy P.M.  There was a fall of 10 degrees in temperature between 1 P.M. and 2 P.M.  I went up after dark talk while with Garrison but didn't get   rent.  Gobed  9.30 PM

Partly cloudy.  Tue felt badly all night with tooth ache &c.  Thinks she ate too much for supper.  Fix her up some bitters after breakfast.  Drive up by  Dice's woods but didn't find any  mushrooms worth saving.  Jim Decker up and  I go on his note for 100.00 for 90 days to harvest B.C. [broom corn]  Marie and Helen went to party at Straley's at night.  I drove uptown for some grub so many buggies I couldn't tie up, so didn't stay long.  The Salvation Army are still preaching at 3rd and Monroe.  Couple fellows rode down there with me.  Partly cloudy day with easterly wind.  Jim thinks will begin cutting B.C. Monday.  Tue kept her bed all day today.  Gobed 9.30 PM

Mostly cloudy with S wind.  Brownfield hoes garden AM.  First  lot of cercropius coming out of second molt today  they are yellow with two rows of blue horns on both sides two rows of yellow ones on back and four red horns on head.  The last lot have finished hatching and  have about half died through neglect.  Nick reports his baby better today and he is at store.  Brownfield and self clean up buggy wheels P.M.  Sprinkle rain  9 30 AM light shower about noon, heavier rain   S.E. Chut Bennett brought up load of ties 15.  Mostly cloudy wind variable S to W AM. but settled in NE about 1 PM and blew strong all day and night.  Gobed  10 15 PM~

Clear  E. wind   Freiberg drummer in town.  Trade him 5 Bbl of Matingly spirits for  Draling paying him 2 1/2 cts to boot.  Renew demand note at 2nd National Bank for 600.00 charging interest from 8 to 7% to agree with new law.  Learn that Jim Cassady will thresh my rye.  H.G. informs me that he has to go down to Grose Nest tomorrow.  Clear day with easterly wind gobed 11.30

About clear, wind S.  Start for ranch 7 AM went to Jim Cassaday, learn that they will not cross river today with machine so turns round and back home by 11AM.  Sell uncle John bal of bacon for 1.00  learn that R.R. has inspected ties went down.  They have spotted pile of 177, Culling 9 and leaving one (?) Rec. check from White 64.84 for 168 ties.  Chut brought up 14 which are un-inspected.  Buy 3 gal. blackberries @2.00  Trade only fair.  Go bed midnight

Mostly clear, light SW wind.  Mrs. Golladay washes.  Meet Harry Hagen first time since he quit work for me.  Maggie suffered much from toothache in night.  E. Garrison pays me $10.00 on rent thus settling up to June 14,  Deposit Richter check 17.73 +5.00 = 22.73 at 2nd National Bk.  Sort over some papers A.M.  Ch. Fitzsimmons clears out closet at store - Pay him 50c.  Tue and I start to Loxa 5.30  Taking some eggs to Hen.  Hen and I take drive up through corn.  Think Shirleys shows up best. plows too deep near corn.  Shirley on war path very offensive  The worst case I have had.  Gate post down at end of street.  We start home about 8 P.M.  Not quite so warm as yesterday.  Mostly cloudy.  SW wind  Thunder about 2 P.M. but no rain here  Gobed 10 P.M.

Partly cloudy, Light S.W. wind.  Shave and haircut at Brown's after breakfast,  Up to  J.H. Marshall's office and to C.H. with  with him at adjusters and Board of Review.  The cancel all back taxes J.H.M. advises me to avoid Shirley as much as possible.Windows need putty &c at store.  Thought to go out to Gaines P,M, but will wait till morning.  Helen went out home after supper to stay a while.  Marie went with her.  Fred took them out  Mostly clear day with light SW wind,  Lightening NW at night.  I drove up town after supper  Gobed 10 P.M.

Clear SW wind.  Start to Gaines 9AM.  Met Chas. Talbott at gate and he drove through Jo's corn with me.  Jo  having out sweet corn.  Is not very well; has had diarrhea all week.  His corn looks better.  I did not go to Loxa.  Stay to dinner at Jos.  He went to work for Talbott in hay P.M.  Charley thinks can cut my hay tomorrow.  I start home 3 P.M. in front of storm which overtook me near Salem Church  It didn't rain much   I drove up to Decker woods and waded across creek to sawdust  Phebe went picnic.  I took Maggie over to Sefton's and drove SW of town looking for fungi.  Everett McKee rode in with me, occasional light shower PM till after dark.  Mostly clear AM. good deal of wind with first shower SW to W.  Tue has bad pain in side supposed lifting.  Gobed  10 AM

Clear.  Much cooler.  N.E. wid.  Phone from Loxa that Jo is sick, early.  Mrs. Baird had a girl baby about 6 A.M.  They occupy Mrs. Eastin's house now belonging to the city.  I started out to Gaines 10 AM.  Find him in bed thinks will be up tomorrow.  I ate some crackers and cheese on  road for dinner.  Jos folks did not get any  I stay till about 2 P.M.  Feeling badly today  Think ate too much "force"  Tue about sick.  Helen and Marie came in a while from Sniders.  Mostly clear day with cool N.E. wind.  Gobed  9 P.M.

Clear N.E. wind.  Look round for a hay rack in morning but didn't find one.  Will have to build one.  Had another talk with Jack Scott.  I got home about 2 P.M.  Tue feeling badly today.  Ed wells works all day about the place mostly mowing yard will work tomorrow.  Self feeling badly with toothache PM and night.  Mostly clear day with variable light wind.  The roads are good and crops look fine.  My harness (girth) broke down south of town and near caused a wreck AM. get it repaired.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Mostly cloudy, or foggy light easterly wind  Shirley called AM.  I did not have lease ready for him to sign.  Pete Drake carried out ashes from setting R.  pit.  but didn't have time to clean out the stable.  He was drunk before night.  Will attend to stable Monday.  Republican primaries PM.  Vote about 4 P.M.  The regular organization won.  Cloudy day with easterly wind self feeling badly  Several young people here at night playing cards till after 10 P.M.  Light snow P.M. and  night.  Say 2 in. and grows colder.   Snow and mist 5 P.M.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Clear, strong NW wind which was blowing all night  The 2 in snow that fell after dark last night drifted good deal.  Kept petty business making fires today. Tue sent package to Maggie by Lewis Marshall.  Clear day with brisk NW wind and colder at night.  Gobed  8 .15 PM.

N.W. wind Pete Drake came to work but stable frozen up.  Mrs. Smith came to wash before 7 A.M. and worked till after 5 P.M.  Mrs. Knock and Mrs. Grove visiting Tue toward night.  Clear AM but mostly cloudy P.M. with variable wind settling into south with 1 in snow at 5 P.M.  Tue feeling badly with  neuralgia in face all day, and retired early  Gobed 9 PM

Clear N.W.wind.  Change in night blowing a regular cyclone  about  1 oclock with snow.  Proves to be  one of worst days this winter to keep house warm.  Very high NW wind clear and pleasant with  ther. but little above zero.  Tue still suffers with her face and retired early.  Mort and Kate  were over till 9 P.M.  I got up at midnight fearing something wrong with furnace but was all right.  Got meddy for Tue in night.  Gobed 9 PM.

Rhoda ironed AM.  Tue did not get up today,  but seems to be feeling better.  Charley Talbot called P.M. reporting Jo's Folks all right,  but want me to come out.  Met Tennant Bridges yesterday.  He said would mail me amt due on rent at once.  Mostly clear AM Cloudy P.M. south wind with light snow about dark.  one inch.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Cloudy, Southwind, Snw flying.  Tue feeling some better and got up late P.M. eating supper with us.  Self feel badly with stomach all day  and take medicine which gets me out in night.  Dick Cadle offers me 1000.00 for 100 feet bottom.  Jack dog did not show up today and we fear he is lost or dead.  Cloudy day wind south to NW and colder at night.  Buy lot gro. at night Wrights PM.  Light snow again toward gobed 9 PM.

Clear, NW. wind  Jack came this morning having been gone since night before last.  They are moving barn from Woodson place to seventh St.  Have it as far as church.  Tue lay in bed till after breakfast.  Buy bread 10   hominy 10    beans 15     at Wrights AM Cr  Had some trouble getting water at barn thawed out  today.  Dick Wright wants to work for me also wants to borrow money.  Our water pump has not worked this week been out of  order several weeks.  Kate and Mort came after I went to bed.  Mostly clear day NW wind gobed 8 P.M.

Mostly clear, light NW wind.  Sort over lot of old papers AM. finding tax receipt for Loxa land, (8 1/2 a) that has been sold.  Marie and  and Helen went with Ferd out to Sniders to visit over Sunday.  Phebe has party of fourteen girls here to supper 8 P.M.  I spend evening in basement reading.  The suit of various parties against the County comes up Monday 24th Long article with picture of  Court House in Chicago Record Herald today.  Meet tie man at McGurty's Combs.  Mostly clear day NW wind gobed 9 P.M.

Mostly cloudy SW wind.  Bert and Rene came in A.M. and stayed to dinner and until 4 P.M.  It began to snow before 10 P.M.  and continued until 5 P.M.  about 1 1/2 inches.  Court  adjourned last Saturday to meet again  on Feby. 24, when Courthouse case will be tried.  My stomach feeling badly  Gobed  7.30 P.M.

Cloudy and raining southwind.  Rain began about midnight or after being in light showers.  Thunder about 8 AM.  Sign of moderate weather to come.  Rain all day wind getting north P.M.  With sleet after dark.  Spent long time today sorting papers and looking for Shirleys old lease which I didn't find.  Was up town toward night getting home 6 P.M.  Gobed  10 PM

Trim covered with with ice drops: Chickens about frozen.  We have 8 or 10 chickens.
Cloudy early but clears off.  The storm quit in night   Strong north wind all day.  It was the worst storm we have had in years and the first  cold wind we have had this season.  Perhaps two or two and a half inches of snow fell.  I spent most of day with furnace which had to run full capacity to keep house warm..

Talbot get tickets.  Jo has 14 tickets 334 bu at 56 and 94 5/7 @ 55 = 428 5/7 = 239.14  Garrison pays me rent to 14 inst. check.  Florence Gaines at home sick.  Shirley not quite done shucking corn  Capt Tillotson called P.M. to see me but I was not here.  Grows some cooler before night.  Cloudy day Northerly wind.  Roads good.  Gobed 9 PM

G.] was AM but did not go in.  Hat said he was no better.  Dr. calls it the "Grippe."  Pay Wilton & Tillotson a/c in full 49.75  Tillotson as one of the committee for Park and Carnagie Library asks price of bottom lot south of branch.  They cant use it at our price $3500  Partly cloudy day with NE wind.  Pay Sam Ray for bus and baggage fare  Partly cloudy day with NE wind.  Ferd was here for a while at night.   Gobed 8, P.M.

Partly cloudy, hazy, Easterly wind, white frost morn.  Tue and self buy some oysters for the Col and start for his house about 9 AM  old mare made break on Madison St breaking up shafts, buy new pair at Wilton & G costs me 3.00  The Col. better this morn.  Gaines came in with part of a load of straw.  Will be in again tomorrow.  Simons and Warren brought two loads corn 60-50 sold to Griffin @ 60.  Shirley brings in Linders check for balance of his corn 776.56  They think there is error somewhere but I fail to find it for certain.  Buy Warrens grey horse for 80.00 and he will bring him up tomorrow or Saturday.  Hannah Marshal here  at night.  Turie over at Groves till bed time.  Light cloudy day E to SE light winds  Farm's returns so far think the farms have yielded in money about same as last year  Gobed 10 PM

Clear light SE wind.  Self sore throat.  Worse this morn has been coming for several days.  Jo Gaines in with anther small load of straw.  While he was in house his team & was tore off both hind wheels, breaking shaft off at collar.  I spent most of the day trying to find way to fix it and finally order entire new axle through W.&T.   Tue and Helen went down to H.Gs. toward night finding him much better Simons and Warren did not come in with wood.  I figure up Shirley corn tickets for sure getting it about same as Linders check.  Mostly cloudy day E & SE wind.  Phebe attends dance at night with Bres???  Gobed 9 P.M.

Mostly cloudy. Southwind.  Jo came with small load straw taking out four joints of 15 in sewer tile for well at Loxa from Andrews @ 30 c per foot.  I went over to Loxa 11.38 AM returning 1.12 P.M. Settle with JD Linder for balance corn  779.14 Shirley 239.14 Gaines in two checks 777.56 and 240.72  Deposit 777.56 at State Bank KG a/c 240.72 at 2d Natl C.G.  Shirley raised 3663 bushels on about 130 acres.  J.W.Gaines (heard) raised 1373 50/70 bushels partly estimated on about 47 acres.  Warren and Simons brought about cord of wood and grey horse which did not pay for today.  Cloudy day mostly with southerly.  Indications of rain.  Was up town most of PM.  Wilton ordered axle yesterday.  Paid W.M. Scott (Bill)  14.40 Ins. on house and furniture  Cloudy day southwind.  Light rain after dark  Gobed 9.30 P.M.

Cloudy and colder wind N.   Mrs. Rogers ironed, washed yesterday  Manifold sawing wood will finish in day or two  Tue puts up stove in front room.  Made exchange of bonded whisky with F Shiness & Co remitting balance.  Had mess of puff balls for supper which we thought did not agree with us.  Milt drove Uncle John cattle up today and stays in town till 10 PM.  (?) very a(?) to rent south end of my place fencing and cleaning up for first crop.  Think will let him do it.  Mostly clear day with N wind  Gobed 10.30 PM.

Clear Northerly wind.  Maggie started to Champaign when she expects to take Library Course.  Bid her goodbye at 11:38 train.  Get shave AM.  Drove out to Gaines' PM. 2.30  Joe still culling corn.  Shirley bulking down his B.C. began this morning.  Jo will work for Pat Downey tomorrow changing.  Clear A.M.  N.E. wind but turns colder about 2 P.M. with N.W. wind.  Strong and mostly cloudy P.M.  I started home 5.30 P.M. taking tomatoes onions and sack of potatoes.   Sent HAB premium list of fair which begins tomorrow.  Seems to quite a stir at F.G. today  Mrs. Gaines says she is thinking of going away on visit leaving Jo to "batch"  Gobed.  8.30 P.M.

Clean  S. wind Warren and Simons came while we were eating breakfast with 16 shoats which we turn in the barn yard.  They take a load of corn back starting about noon.  Pay Heddin for  48 bu corn bought yesterday.  Pay off all the gang I could today.  Pay Dave Masters for 4 loads of corn bought last winter 100 bu 23.60.  Have decided to get out of the hog business (?)  and will sell all I have except  a sow or two and some pigs.  One of the hottest days we have had not much of a crowd in town but trade fair.  Jack Handly took down a load of tile for me for well.  Cal Noble says he will have it in a week or ten days.  Pentacost band are still  in town and were around this AM soliciting donations for building a church  Mostly clear day.  go bed  11.30 PM

Clear with S.W. wind.  Have written nothing in this book for over a week and there is some guess work about this record since last Sunday.  I write it up today.  Heavy thunder shower between 4 and 5 P.M.  Hogs brought up yesterday tearing the barnyard all to pieces.  Tue went to church AM. -- go bed 10 P.M.

Mostly cloudy.  Dickenson made hog pen and patched up fence in bottom working all day.  Yesterday and today are the two hottest days so far this season.  Farmers not in town  much.  Fair corn weather and prospects good  Wheat will not amount to much here.  Intended to go to ranch yesterday nut had to fix hog pen.  Mrs. R. washed and ironed  Gobed 10 30 PM

Mostly clear boys begin cutting Sprouts in east pasture  Start for home at 9 AM.  Stop at mill and decide  to go back to dinner  Send Rile and John down to mill P.M. to saw off and pile some cull lumber.  Start home agin at 1 P.M.  getting there about 4.   Mrs Perrill and Kate there   We have cut to date 547 logs measuring 58647 ft.  Comer has sawed to date 10 AM 429 logs measuring 48070 ft. leaving still in woods 118 logs containing  10,607 ft. some few of them are useless when crooked or rotten.  Pay Deckmen 1.00 of 1.45 owing him for work  Very hot and oppressive  Gobed  10.30 P.M.  Rile Easton broke down with load of lumber today.

Mostly cloudy SE wind.  Thunder and lightning all night with light showers, apparently heavy rains north last night.   Tue was up several times in night.  Self didn't sleep much.  Get  Jo Crail to lay tile for cross on Fifth St. which he does before noon Pd 50c  Mrs.  Smith works all day wash iron &c.  Colby sends more  Pleurotus mushrooms.  Thunder showers with little rain till nearly noon and also toward night.  I drove out to Gaines P.M.  Jo plowing SW field.  Corn looks fine and growing very fast.  They had very heavy rains a few miles north last night.  River water thick with mud.  Council have resolved to move all buildings back from St line.  Sultry day.  S.W. wind  Gobed 9.30 P.M._ _ _

Mostly cloudy southerly wind. Sprinkle rain in night Thunder north this morning  Mike Handley calls to work with team but cant use him today.  Had some P.ostreatus [ http://botit.botany.wisc.edu/toms_fungi/oct98.html ]   from Colby for breakfast which were very good.  John Simons in town but did not bring wood.  Set trap in barn and caught big rat.  Get bridle repaired at Shoemakers  P.M.  Garrison pays rent to July 14 50.00 and gives indemnifying bond June 6th  Pay W.F. Jenkins (K.G. check) 150.00 still owe her forty or fifty dollars.  Thunder showers around with light sprinkles here several times during the day.  the warmest day this season so far,  variable wind strong from S.W. and W. Did intend going out to Gaines but too hot.   Got straw hat at Winter AM. Cr. 25.  Mostly clear day and sultry  Variable wind  No rain here today but thunder and lightning in night.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Father and Tue got up pretty early but I did not get store opened till nearly 7 AM.    Kelly came late and helped all day although about sick I felt badly all day but  no worse than yesterday  Can stand  the grip pretty well if this is all   Neither Kelly nor self went to  our meals today Not because we had not time but we did not want any.  John Simons claims  he has not backed out of  his trade with me and does not intend to.  He wants to move as soon as possible.  Frank Drake was in today to tell me they had got a load of hay!  Another old sheep dead and a number of pigs.  Trade very light till Saturday warmer day  and snow mostly goes off gobed 11 PM. foggy at night.

Clear and fine, SW wind.  Mrs. Rogers washed and ironed.   Uncle John in town not down to dinner.  Has traded Kline Farm with Burgers for Gage property paying some 1500 dollars to boot.  I start for ranch about 3 P.M.  Getting there about dark.  Milt and Frank hauled jag of hay today from John Van Meters barn.  Mostly clear day and quite warm.  Very strong SW winds.  Roads bad by bridge river barely fordable.    Gobed  9.30 P.M.

Damp cloudy day  Johnny Decker worked 7 to 5.  Milt hauled two loads corn from Martins.  Hang gate in barn door.  Corn crib floor, some troughs Warren bought load corn 16 (?) @ 25. 56 bush (2 loads) from Martin @ 22 1/2  self hurt left foot with timber  very painful in night couldn't sleep.

Cloudy.  Johnny worked 7 to 5.  Milt went to town Stanberry suit compromised.  Milt got home about  8 P.M. slow rain good part of PM.   and in night  John and self make rack in  in sheep shed  with troughs  Ran up balance of stairs,  Milt got 400 lb shats at Wings.  Wind S.  River fordable.  Milt returned by Walkers   F Drake daubed on house today.  Gobed 10 PM  a corn kept me awake nearly all night.

1.  Saturday. 6 am.  Ther  32.  50.  34.  =  38 2/3  Foggy N wind  Didn't sleep much with toothache all night.  Lamn came 730 working all AM cutting up kindling and other jobs.  Meet Brown in town and have a settlement of my collections to date  Pay him 40 65 check  We decide to  quit soon as he can finish up some sawing now on hand.  Drive down to Wrightsville to catch John Simons  He will set some men cutting wood on me Monday 65 cts and burn brush.  Tue ate dinner at  Groves also children.  I did not eat dinner.  Pay Lamb in full 1.50  Was up  town while after supper.  Mort and Kate over at night  Mostly clear day self about sick.  Have lately been eating and drinking too much.  No tobacco since I quit!  Was at Marshall's office AM.  More there  Gobed 10.PM

Clear N.W. wind Martha Parsons did not come yesterday as promised by phone other day.  Shirley called AM and Paid 168.19 ch for our half bal of corn also paid rent on 5 acres in hungarian 25.00  Pay him for labor 4.00  This was an extra I never heard of.  Thought made mistake but couldn't find him up town.  Bert was down to dinner.  Has been sick.  I drove out Gaines to take hammer &c  He had been hauling up wood today.  Deposits above check and other cash at 2d Natl 224.49  No book.  Bal in B 15.00  Cloudy day estimated 245 acres 2046.00 or 8.35 average per acre.  This is so much better than past years that feel encouraged to continue  farming.  All hands away at night as usual.  Maggie was sick in night.  Tue and self got up  Gobed 8 P.M.  Lloyd women said would come to wash Wednesday morn early.

Jo grubbing.  He came in while I was there.  Shirleys teams in field  shucking on Tue's eighty,  People  are hunting  on my land say Shirley gave them permission.  I got home time for dinner  Raw chilly day cloudy NW wind, misty.  Jo Mill continue grubbing while weather is good.  Self not feeling well. Gobed 9 PM.  Maggie attends supper at Starr Restaurant at night.

Cloudy N.W. wind.  Thanksgiving, Sent Record to date  Sent 2.00 other day for daily Record to June 1 1901.  Ferd called AM.  Take him over to Knocks to repair gun, and  then to his Grandmas.  Drive Tue down to Shotzberger PM. Afterward to Hats.  Hat and H.G. at night to talk about boarding Snider children.  Maggie away Marie at Lippencotts till bedtime.  Mostly clear with NW wind chilly.  Roads round town quite muddy yet.  Will Goodman talk while with me.  Wall has sold Brocton places and will devote his energies to The  Liquor Store No 5  Mrs. Grove called at night but didn't stay long.  Robt Lamb says he will work  for me tomorrow morn.  Gobed 9 PM~

Clear S.W. wind.  Heavy white frost.  Bob Lamb came about 7.30 AM.  Cleans up furnace room, and stable  Make changes in cow stable and repair up  barn stable doors.  Worked till 5 PM. @ 12 1/2 per hour and will come in morning  Simons and Warren up with wood.  Have finished shucking  corn and report 140 bu for my share which I regard as rather thin for 1900.  Says  Brown has  moved into old Fletcher place and will begin doing something at Mill soon.  See John Marshall about getting him out.  Heave fully determined do this if I can and will begin tomorrow.  Mostly clear AM, cloudy P.M.  Tue at  Reading Circle P.M.  I ride while after supper and caught cold.  Gobed 9 P.M.  Ferd here AM cleaning Bicycle.

Clear heavy white frost.  Stove(?) came at 6 AM.  Took all caws and calves except one  Frank went with him to help  Frank and Milt got in about 7 P.M.    Riley & Rogers cut red oaks and cut load of stove wood for me P.M.  Had better luck with logs than yesterday.  Clear day and warmer.  Very dry down in timber pasture short  but plenty of water for stock.  Gobed 9 PM

Clear  Drive out to Gaines AM to see Shirley try the BC stubble but was too late  Jo grubbing  Was down at Hazel  (?)  (?)  and Shirley.  Shirley cribbing.  Took Linder sample of our corn says too sappy yet for 70lbs  Get lot of stuff at Jones for Gaines folks  Decide to go to shucking tomorrow.  Shirley says will gather road through field tomorrow.  Get home dark  Gobed 8 PM

Deck burn brush  Meet Milt on way  home with big sow.  sp. rain toward night  Got home 8 PM   Father about sick with cold  go bed 10.30 PM.

Mostly clear.  Get shave  Decide to go to Mattoon on train  Drive down there and leave horse hitched to Wrights shed N. of R.R.  Going  to Mattoon on 11.38 train which was late  Take in most or many of show P.M.  Eat supper with the Catholic Ladies  Saw Martha Parsons at night.  Met Charley Hopper after dark and he and I took in some of show.  Try to telephone to Pipher to put up my horse but contrary drug man headed me off.  Met D.B. Rose says told fellow to pay me 200 amt of bill he owes me for lumber  I got home at 11 P.M. and ate hearty sup at that time  gobed 11.11 PM

Partly clear.  I intended to start to Matton or Loxa early but did not get off till 8 or 9 AM,  Went to  Gaines and intended to reach Mattoon.  Mrs. and Mrs. Gaines wanted to go with children, so we go  I  taking Mrs G in Buggy and Jo walking Start with load - May and daughter, 9.30 AM. getting there 10.30.  Leave horse and buggy in stable west side which May recommended.  OK.  Take in much of fair.  Meet many I knew.  Saw Bert and was with him over show says will loan us money and take up note at 1st National Bank.    Shirley met me just as I was about to start home.  Tell him have not time to discuss matters.  They  try to plow BC stubble yest. but give  it up.  Got to Joes about 6 P.M. and home 7 PM.  Gobed 830 P.M.

About clear.  start for timber at 7 AM got my own breakfast.  Got up last night and shave about 1. AM.  Find Rogers and old man Decker at work.  Red sow had eight pigs last night.   Had boys cut load apples for Reynolds.  Start home at 3 P.M.  Gather mess of puff balls on way home which cook and give dog  They taste good and didn't hurt the dog.  Gobed  11 P.M.  Some cloudy in day.

Mostly clear.  Drive south of town with  girls after fungus.  Tue puts up 6 cans peaches.  Drake hauls load of green wood on yard.  Very  hot day.  Gobed 11 P.M.

Mostly clear.  Just learn of big storm at Galveston several thousand people drowned.  Charley  Gowdwin hauls down old scraps and cleans up yard at store AM.  Mottes offered 80.00 for Armstongs B.C.  Try AM to get A. by phone at McGurtys.  He says he won't sell @ 80.00 and will not bale till next week.  Maggie bout sick and went over to see Dr. Starr.  Drive up to township line with Tue and Marie at night.  The schools began today.  Very warm day  go bed 9 P.M.

Clear Southerly wind.  Mrs. Owens washes.  Pay Charley Goodwon for dray &c.   Went out to Gaines' AM.  Jo cutting corn  Get basket of tomatoes &c.  Back home before  noon.  Take Mrs. Owens home after dinner  Violent S to west wind all day but no rain.  Lightning S.E. at night.  John Simons brought up a small load of corn: did not see him.  Ferd was here to supper and all night   Says  has left home and will go out to New York in two or three weeks.  Thought would go out to Loxa at night but decide not to go  gobed 8.30 P.M.

Clear N.W. wind.  Mr. Scott was expected today but didn't come.  Ferd here to diner and supper.  He has fully determined to go back to Sag Harbor and will probably leave in tow or three weeks. (Top of page has a lot of shorthand.)  Take Maggie down to 3.30 train.  Get back for  Walls coal house.  Henry Reasor puts new stop-and - waste at barn and tries to fix water pump in basement.  Gaiser says will take what fencing I have on hand which count 129 ps 1x6 ass lengths 12 to 16.  Drive out to Gaines' late.  Find them  gone to bed at 7 P.M.  Jo has been cutting corn and burning brush all the week.  Mostly clear AM cloudy some P.M.    looking like rain   Wind N.W. Mostly clear wind.  Shirley came for Jo to help in hungai(?).  Get bushel of tomatoes and other things  Leave Gaines' 10 A.M. over take Bill Myers on way home.  Mrs. Owens ironing today.  Mr. Scott here to dinner and P.M. till 9.05 train.  Ferd here to supper.  He has not heard from Sag Harbor lately.  They have taken water trough away from  NW corner sq.  Schenen building upto second floor  Black running "The Health Office" alone  The Walls being busy at their place in Brocton.  I met Armstrong on road today.  he does not want to sell his B.C. for less than 100.00.   Mostly clear day westerly wind.    Al Deffenbaugh gave me receipt for work done on road in Lafayette 13.37.  This is road tax on everything at Loxa  Gobed 8,30 PM

Since the 1914 journal stopped in June and does not return until May 1915 I thought I would add the journal from 1900.  My Grandmother Reasor, Marie, is 13.

Hazy.  Heavy thunder shower in night not much rain though.  Went up to store in morning post books and sweep off side walk.   H. G. relieves himself of bile on large scale.  Picked over first grown corn today.  Tue kills one of her chicks for dinner.  Mamie Lang here most of day  pleasant day gobed 9 P.M.

July 1900

Clear, southerly wind.  Shirley called AM. and reports that he and Jo will haul in bal. of oats this evening.  John Simons called a while after dinner.  Some walls fell in back of Geo Grays building when they were repairing.  Saw Ira Brown P.M. says has just got to sawing.  Give him Snider's bill and small one for self.  Order urinal of John Van Meter to cost 5.00  Garert Wall  is back from Casey today  Get other specs of Jake Morgan all paid.  Drive round town alone an hour or two at night smoking last cigar and quit.  Phebe accident tonight.  Mostly clear day  Gobed 11 PM.
