Mostly clear. S.3. Emmett came before 7 finished fence repairs trims berries and other jobs AM. Tue got card from Muggs. She arrived all right at Jeff City 10.30 P.M. Rhoda came and washed, did part of ironing is sick. Emmett trims trees &c. working all day and settle to date 4.50 check. Has got to plant his potatoes tomorrow, will come again. I work much of P.M. helping Emmett. Tue attends prayer meet at night with Mrs. Brooks. Mostly clear day with very high Southerly winds. Gobed 9

Cloudy.S.3. I got early to go to Loxa but couldn't do so. Oil buggy. I began light rain 6 AM. Tue got up 6:30. I start Loxa 8 AM Light rain Drove me back home. One Rennells says will take most of my old brick today or tomorrow. Pick out 28 of my stone tomato plants into paper boxes. They are very small yet. Harman phones that Paul sick and has not been able to take posts to Loxa. Get shave and hair cut and wash at Brown's P.M. pd. 50 cts. after which I start E. for drive on Ashmore road. Too windy for me and return. Tue went to picture show at C. Hat night. Part cloudy day with sprinkles rain and threatening. We are needing some rain. The roads are getting dusty. Weather Bureau predicts rain soon. Gobed. 9.30. Look at buggies at Bell and Bells. I look at Mercantile seeing nothing I care for.

Cloudy N.1. Begins light rain 5.30 and continued to drizle(sic) much of day. Tue working for function of RC at Balwares. She left home before noon. Jack and I ate dinner alone. Frank Rennells calls and will take old brick on Perkins lot at 4.00 Stopped raining 5 P.M. meas. 6 P.M. .61. I order bale straw and fresh oats. I.B. was out of feed. Did not hitch up. Gobed 9. Cloudy day north wind 1.

April 7, 1913 and 1888 in Charleston, Illinois

7. Monday. 5.15. Ther. 34. 48. 42. =41 1/3
Clear. E.2. Soon clouds up. Roy came 7 AM. Get mare shod at Dibert. Jethoo Evans phones that my Perkins lot is eligible for PO site. He calls later. I ask 120 0 dollars for my lot. Jethro 4000. Glascos 5.000. The Paris man has not reported theron. Says will employ Cafer to arrange matters. Can't find key to box* deeds and try unsuccessfully for hour or two to open it think Tue has same. Get letter from Buddy AM date 4 inst. Roy spades for three rows of potatoes and after we began to plant them. It began light rain at noon and continued (too light to read) We quit at 2 P a/c the rain. Roy and self plant one row potatoes and rain stopped us at 2 PM. Jethro Evans came again toward night and I sign contract with him and JW Glasco to sell my part of S.W. 1/4 of block for P.O. building putting in hands of Judge Cafer at 2% com on purchase price. Pay Evans 2.00 my share plat. Tue got home about 6 P.M. having been gone since May 21. Morty came over soon after she arrived but did not stay long. Mostly cloudy with strong easterly and light rain at times mixed with hail most of P.M. Gobed 9 P.M.
*I have this old tin box full of legal papers.I have always wondered why there is just a hole where the lock and latch should be. Now I know the story of the Deed Box. This is what is so fun about the journal, it answers many questions.

7. Saturday. 6 AM. Ther. 37. 65? 50Clear. Very heavy dew nearly frost. Took Sam, Ray's white pony and ride down to R.R. then down to timber getting back at 7.30 P.M. About as tired as could be. Caught more cold. Saw the timber pretty thoroughly today. Kinks ties suit me pretty well. Wes Decker gives us leave to move in his fence to get to road out. Told him he could have all the wood he needed. The saw mill has moved out. I went by Handly Ford and return by Walker's. Gobed 9.30 P.M.

Part cloudy, red. S.3. Hitch up and start Loxa 9.30. Drove through Loxa Mrs. Gaines says Retha was married Aug. 4 but has just divulged it. Saw Alva Armstrong and promise to send over at once sack wood plaster for patching Loxa house. Expected to see Harman shucking in "pond" but they had finished it. Drove up to B.C. shed. The BC is baled and lies in shed on west. After driving round the field an hour or so drove up to premises and made a stand on Harmans house. He soon came over and after talking a while about selling BC at 100.00 said he had to go and take Lola to Dr. Preston & Co had gone to field and were shucking on south side NE of W 40'. Preston says they have been shucking to feed and today J.V.H. consented to take a few loads. My part of their shucking. I got nearly a sack from Preston's wagon. It began to rain and I start home say 1.30 P.M. getting there about 3 P.M. The rain just lays dust. Jack went. We ate dinner S. of house N end B.C. The roads good. Clear till toward noon with light drizzle much of P.M. - Over take Geo. Veach & Co. with big drove cattle at Loxa school house. Muggs painting radiators also upper walk in W.C. She was out with friends at night. Gob 8 P.M.
I offer Perkins lot to Burbeck per Bill Scott for 1000.00 400 down.

Harman hands me check for 16,30 for my half of part of clover seed. There will be a few dollars more. He says threshers had 8 3/4 bu. I pay half machine charge 100 per I hitch up late P.M. driving up town and around leave order Andrews & CO for sack wood fiber to be sent Alva Armstrong, Loxa. Sebert will come for my horse tomorrow morn to shoe. Maggie has been painting (gold) the radiators. Read Trilby gobed 10 P. Part cloudy day signs of rain P.M.

Clear N.W. Drove to Frank Blach's to get him to clean up furnace &c. Not at home. Tue sweeping and cleaning up. We are needing painter and plumber. I try to build hot fire in furnace. I say I can't burn that Pana coal in it and keep house from freezing. Helen called and she with Muggs and Tue left for town leaving me to handle Alfred. He came about dark to do chores. Pay him 30 cts which is 30c. more than he has earned. Clear day moderate northerly winds. I met John Glassco up town. He does not wish to buy Perkins lot. Bel Scott called P.M. Bill Decker wants to saw off the timber. Gobed 8.30

Mort works most of P.M. on W.C. inside finishing for the present. Roosevelt reported getting along all right, but has quit campaigning. Bill Scott was down again to see about Perkins lot. Talk with Harry Messick about B.C. Says 122.00 the highest he knows of. Maggie out driving with friends all P.M. there is a great scramble for nuts of all kinds this year. Buy qt. can paint at IBriggs .60 cr. get turpentine .25c cr. at Paynes. Met Jack Jefferies. He does not advise me to sell Perkins lot at present. I drove down 7th St to Guiney house and West on Polk to J Hatton's without accomplishing anything. Try same trip P.M. with some result. Mrs. Bell over for pears. Tue getting rid of them to neighbors. think 4 or 5 bu left on trees. Tue gets letter from Phebe (also from Kate) seems well satisfied with her pasish (sic). Cloudy. SE.2. Mort made and set window frame today~ The plumbers did not do anything. I hitch up early and drive S. to Woodson road returning by Wrightsville getting home noon. Roads generally good - becoming dusty. The late frost 30 and 1st have touched corn in places. Mort worked all day. Cottingham didn't appear. Bill Scott called to see about Perkins lot. Burbank wants it. Ferd writes will he married this month to Florence Purtill. I drove up for grub toward night. Breald and B.S. Tue over to Groves at night - a party of friends. Mostly clear day light to fresh southerly winds. Tue put in P.M. varnishing floor of hall upstairs. Buy whip at Frommels. Go bed 8.30.

Clear, N.E. 2. Emmett hitched up. Grubbed out Gov. wood cherry S.E. of house: fixes fence and water tub- other odd jobs - and cuts weeds again on Perkins lot. Tue finishes ironing A.M. Today about the hottest day we have had. Self barely able to get around on afc rheumatism and heat. Emmett works til 3 P.M. and pay him ch in full 2.55. Mostly clear A.M. clouds up with heavy showers beginning soon after 3 P.M. (.85) to 5 P.M. mercury fell to 68 about 4 P.M. but rose later. I drove up to P.O. cash Kate's M.O. Drove to Crins corner to water mare. Little rain after 4 P.M. Rainbow about sunset. Cloudy at . Put mare in pasture where has been most of weak gobed 8.30 P.M.
