Cloudy NW wind light snow.  My foot was better this morning and by night didn't feel much different  from usual.  Old Mr. Ball died today of grip, Tom Messicks niece also died.  Cloudy day, light snow flurries all day, clears off in night.  probably 1 1/2 inches fell.  Turned much colder about 2 P.M.  Ther at 4 PM. was 8 and stood at zero at midnight gobed Midnight.

[war path] at night.  Phebe went out at night till late hour, so suppose she is filling much better.  Dessa  out with friends at night.  Louise  over at night.  Mostly cloudy day with SW wind.  Wind  rises at night with some light snow in night.  Go bed 9 P.M.

Mostly cloudy, or foggy light easterly wind  Shirley called AM.  I did not have lease ready for him to sign.  Pete Drake carried out ashes from setting R.  pit.  but didn't have time to clean out the stable.  He was drunk before night.  Will attend to stable Monday.  Republican primaries PM.  Vote about 4 P.M.  The regular organization won.  Cloudy day with easterly wind self feeling badly  Several young people here at night playing cards till after 10 P.M.  Light snow P.M. and  night.  Say 2 in. and grows colder.   Snow and mist 5 P.M.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Clear, strong NW wind which was blowing all night  The 2 in snow that fell after dark last night drifted good deal.  Kept petty business making fires today. Tue sent package to Maggie by Lewis Marshall.  Clear day with brisk NW wind and colder at night.  Gobed  8 .15 PM.

N.W. wind Pete Drake came to work but stable frozen up.  Mrs. Smith came to wash before 7 A.M. and worked till after 5 P.M.  Mrs. Knock and Mrs. Grove visiting Tue toward night.  Clear AM but mostly cloudy P.M. with variable wind settling into south with 1 in snow at 5 P.M.  Tue feeling badly with  neuralgia in face all day, and retired early  Gobed 9 PM

Clear N.W.wind.  Change in night blowing a regular cyclone  about  1 oclock with snow.  Proves to be  one of worst days this winter to keep house warm.  Very high NW wind clear and pleasant with  ther. but little above zero.  Tue still suffers with her face and retired early.  Mort and Kate  were over till 9 P.M.  I got up at midnight fearing something wrong with furnace but was all right.  Got meddy for Tue in night.  Gobed 9 PM.

Rhoda ironed AM.  Tue did not get up today,  but seems to be feeling better.  Charley Talbot called P.M. reporting Jo's Folks all right,  but want me to come out.  Met Tennant Bridges yesterday.  He said would mail me amt due on rent at once.  Mostly clear AM Cloudy P.M. south wind with light snow about dark.  one inch.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Cloudy, Southwind, Snw flying.  Tue feeling some better and got up late P.M. eating supper with us.  Self feel badly with stomach all day  and take medicine which gets me out in night.  Dick Cadle offers me 1000.00 for 100 feet bottom.  Jack dog did not show up today and we fear he is lost or dead.  Cloudy day wind south to NW and colder at night.  Buy lot gro. at night Wrights PM.  Light snow again toward gobed 9 PM.

Clear, NW. wind  Jack came this morning having been gone since night before last.  They are moving barn from Woodson place to seventh St.  Have it as far as church.  Tue lay in bed till after breakfast.  Buy bread 10   hominy 10    beans 15     at Wrights AM Cr  Had some trouble getting water at barn thawed out  today.  Dick Wright wants to work for me also wants to borrow money.  Our water pump has not worked this week been out of  order several weeks.  Kate and Mort came after I went to bed.  Mostly clear day NW wind gobed 8 P.M.

Mostly clear, light NW wind.  Sort over lot of old papers AM. finding tax receipt for Loxa land, (8 1/2 a) that has been sold.  Marie and  and Helen went with Ferd out to Sniders to visit over Sunday.  Phebe has party of fourteen girls here to supper 8 P.M.  I spend evening in basement reading.  The suit of various parties against the County comes up Monday 24th Long article with picture of  Court House in Chicago Record Herald today.  Meet tie man at McGurty's Combs.  Mostly clear day NW wind gobed 9 P.M.

Clear.S.2.  Thick hoar frost but no ice.  Hitch AM driving down to Miller's.  Saw boy:  his father not home yet.  The dirt roads not so muddy as expected.  Mrs. Curd and Mrs. Brooks spend P.M. with Tue.  We did not get any dinner.  I took some B & M.   I felt very downsy (sic) all day and did not drive any  more.  Bells folks are no better.  Fun day:  Clear till toward night.  Tue Grove's at night.  Gob 9.30

Part cloudy.  S.S.W.3.  Tue  writes to Phebe.  I mail the letter about noon.  Drive out as far as Decker Park.  Mushrooms seem to be starting in in garden bed.  Mr. and Mrs. Bell reported some better.  Bought Victor Opera Book at Whites AM.   Mrs. Grove called PM.  She and Tue visit Mrs. Bell.  I pile up old braces on  back lot PM.  Alfred came to chore after school.  Will come again Thursday P.M.  

Harman  phones night and wants me to come out tomorrow if possible.  Part cloudy and moderate southerly wind.  Go bed 10.

Mostly clear, hazy.  Coldest morning so far this fall.  Buy 8 1/2 bushel apples of Nels Thomas @ 25c.  Ben Davis.  Engage 2 bush.  Lakeman sweet of Burgess.  Wrote letter to J.W. Hall Alva Fla.   Got Crass to work toward night picking up round stable paid him 25 c.  Mrs. Rogers ironed.  Cloudy most of day with easterly wind looks much like rain or snow.  Bob Brown in town.  Tell him to go ahead and sow timothy seed.  Gobed 9 AM.

Cloudy E. wind about 1 1/2 inches of snow on ground. and light rain falling.  Cloudy all day snow mostly melted.  Fatty Knock fixed the cistern pump yesterday it has been out of repair for a month or two.   He also (?) on the lid to piano.Chancellors folks have been coming over for water for awhile - Father says he is going to stop it.  Damp chilly day - Tue and self both have sore throats  Baby not very well at night.  Maggie and Phebe did not go to Sunday School today.  Gobed 9 PM~

N.W.3.  the snow disappeared in night.  Miller called P.M. also dew.  Miller doubts whether  he will get to paint any more this fall account  of weather.  He leaves Sat. for a revival down in Shelby to last indefinitely.  Cloudy day NW wind.  Self feel poorly Mrs. Brooks and Mrs.  were over at night until 9 P.M.  I did not hitch up today.  Go bed 9.30 PM.

Clear. heavy white frost N.W. 1.  ice 1/8.  Jo Hatton came but too cold to paint.  Miller came and tried it, but gave it up.   Self hitch up 10 A.   Pay Miller in full to date 3.30 check.  See stub.  Mrs. Grove called an hour.  I drive west part of town AM. passed Jo's but didn't see him.  Tue mops up after MG departed.  H.G. calls and I sign note for 35.00 with him. ninety days at State Bank.  Tue went R.C. at Ollie's P.M.  Miller called to get tools and say goodbye.  When he returns from two weeks revival meeting it will be too late to do any painting.  Clear cool day with light northerly winds. and coldest day to date this fall.  Halloween  not so boisterous as usual.  They did not bother us.  Go bed 9 P.M.

Average temperature 54.6  Maximum on 10th 84  Minimum on 31st 28.  Rain on ten days  4.47 in.  Cloudiness 49 percent  Snow on two days 20th and 29th about 1 inch.  Wind during month was N 5 1/3,  NE 3 2/3, E  2,  SE 2 1/3,  S 7 2/3, SW 1.  W.  2 and NW 7 days.  First  half month warm latter half cooler with some heavy rains.  Dirt roads have been quite muddy recently.  Most of rain has entered the ground.  The streams are beginning to run.  There has been great scarcity of water in places.  The city supply seems to be ample.  Little shrinking done as yet.  Don't think  elevators are buying any.

Briggs and talk with him but still in dark bout colors.  Toward night I  drove S.W. thought might see some fungi  I (sic) got too dark and return after 6 P.  Tue attends services with Mrs. Brooks getting home about 9  Mostly cloudy light variable winds go bed 10.30 P

Clearing NW4.  There light showers in night with much lightning and wind rain meas. .48 in to  6 AM.  The  rain did not damage new paint much.  Miller called and pay him 6.75 in full to date.  Tue ironing AM.  I drove S. of town AM. seeing several campestris but did not get any  of them.  Tue ate dinner at Grove's and was gone when I returned.  Mary and Ella Facklen from Cal. are there visiting.  We get letter from Muggs AM.  She is going to Columbus O. to attend wedding and will call here on way say 24th.  We expect Phebe home tomorrow  Her divorce case will come up Monday.  The town full of people today.  Clear with strong NW wind  Tue did not attend church at night as usual.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Mostly clear, S.2.  Get first letter from Phelps regarding wheels.  Says  will repair them if will return them.  Tue got letter from Phebe with first enclosure.  I sent some papers to the girls.  Met H. Messick again.  He has applied a carload phosphate rock at Westfield farm.  Mr. Reed bought half bu. clings 60 c. Pd.  Warren Decker calls, he and Ike R. want to rent Ranch ground for next season and will begin work on it at once.  Have not decided but promise to go down there next Sunday if possible.  Mrs. Grove called and later Tue went up town to Parker opening with Mrs. Brooks.  I drove late to timber E. getting home 6 P.M.  Tue and Helen got to hear band at night.  Clear AM. clouding up P.M. wind becoming N.W.  Gobed 10.30 P.M.  Rain about 10 P.M. Tate but didn't.   Learn our phones will be(g)in 3.30 which did.  Meanwhile I drove down E. of normal and get nice mess of  campertris.  Harman and Shrives here when I return.  They want to rent the farm together and I tell them can have it subject to conditions which will discuss later.  They were in buggy and took out ome pears.  Mrs. Brooks over at night, also Mrs. Curd.  The latter went with Tue and  Helen to band concert.  Much cloudy with easterly winds.  Gobed 9.30

Clear N.W. 1.  Rhoda washes working till 2 P.M.  I drove up for  bread before noon and get a water melon of Amyx.  Tue got letter from Muggs.  Yesterday I sent specimmen fungus to Prof. Pecks hepiota  granidosus  supposed.  Toward night I drove down by  Wrightsville going E. road return by cut off.  Everything is ready to take fire.  We learn that Oakley has left Loxa house.  Val Hanley wants to rent the same.  Don't let him have it.  I know Val of old.  Mostly clear day N.W. moderate shift to N.E.  gobed 9 P.M.

Pd.  Hitch up and start out to find some peaches which find at  one Reed's at Ben Rosebrough place.  Will get some in day or two.  I continue west and south going home by Mat Browns.  There is some pretty good corn in Kickapoo bottoms.  There is quite stream running in Cosell Creek at Lattas place and also at the bridge below Mrs. Richard's - roads are very dusty.  I got home 12.30.  Clear day with brisk N.E. wind.  Too warm for comfort.  Tue went with Mrs. Curd to concert    Gobed 9

Mostly clear.   There was sharp lightning in N. at 3 AM.  We had beeb intending to go to Loxa this AM. but did not rise in time.  No letter from Phebe yet we don't know whether she has gone to Havana or not.  Get letter form Mr. H.A. Neal asking  her address.  He is her attorny.  I quit tobacci altogether kast night and feel very poorly.  Our pears are falling fast.  They are hardly mature enough to use yet.  Very many of the winter apples are dropping off.  Tue went out to John Reed's about three miles west of town for peaches late P.M.  Part cloudy moderate N. to NE winds gobed 8 P.M.

Part Cloudy.  W2.  Hitch up 11 A.M.  Buddy gets ready to start home and I take her to 3.14 train.  Phebe went to depot with Charles.  No word from Phelps and think will let him go to thunder.  A shortage in ice developes (sic) in and Tue buys of other Co.  The city seems  to be putting in an extra  water  tank for horses in wagon yard.  Ben Maxwell is building new reinday(?) on Harrison across from Mrs. Coons rear building.  Jack dog has about succumbed to the hot weather.  Phebe went to Picnic at Urban Park late. P.M. getting home 10 oc.  Tue and I drive SW as far as Gee's leaving home at 6 and getting in 8 P.M.  Part cloudy day westerly wind.  Some signs of rain in clouds.  Gobed 9.30

N.1.  Gus brought us some butter.  Tue got 1/2 chicken of Mrs. Grove which have for dinner.  Tue attended church A.M. getting paper.  I start to hitch up but don't on a/c of light showers.  About 5 P.M. drove out as far as Huffmans and find roads quite muddy.  I came near have trouble with mare south of garden.  I met a clothesline and had to back out.  Tue over at Mrs. curds at night.  Julia Kenayer has taken rooms there.  Cloudy day, light northerly  winds, light rain at times .  Same quite heavy showers at night and thunder.  The rain today and night .58 (to 6 AM 23rd)  We are "raising" another lot of chickens like we did last season. - on shars.  they will soon be edible.  Gobed 10.30 P.M.

Part cloudy, red clouds. S.3.  Tue irons most of AM. and Keeps on.  I sort out old junk in shed and clean off mare AM. John Simon calls after dinner reporting everything all right at ranch.  One King from Diona called PM wanting to cut some  poles , I refused.  Phoned J.E.W. morn for same. Hitch up before  Ray came and he went with me to Interurban fore for Bill in same.  Stopping at P.O., coming home.I got letter from Phebe she was yet in Chicago at Gages 12th inst.  Later I drove out to Huffmans returning S.road.  It is not as muddy as I supposed.  They have been erecting frame for big water tank opposite Interurban on Monroe street since I was down that way Jan. 30.  Ray rode to Division with me.  Tue went up town after I got home about 6 P.M.  Several dogs have been poisoned in neighborhood lately.  The roads not so bad as supposed.  I get Andrews bill today it is much larger than had expected.  It includes all at farm.  Roof rc for barn and roof and stripping for BC shed also current and lumber for Extension WC SW corner of house and repairs  on Loxa house.  Mostly clear till P.M. wind got NW and cloudy.  Papers predict cold wave.  The snow is gone except patches on North hillsides.  Go bed 9 P.M.

cloudy N.2.  Tue retired latae last night leaving cellar lights on  they burn till 7.30 AM.  Tue slept till nearly 9 oc.  She attended church with Mrs. Brooks AM.  Getting paper which is now 5 cts. instead of 6 as formerly for a year or two past.  She went calling with Mrs. Brooks P.M.  I wait for Ray to come to help hitch up but did it self before he arrived.  I drive SW Keeping pave and gravel till turn E. OakRidge SH.  Chilly driving roads generally muddy wind getting in S. clouds up.  I got home 5.30 Tue later.  Tue writing Marie tonight.  The lights were all out for a while about 9.  Mostly clear, varible winds light rain 9 P.M. and later.  Gobed.9.

N.1.  Lt. wh. fr.  The rain last night (.10) thin ice.  Tue still writing to Buddy and sends package by Parcel this morning.  Tue  over to Bells P.M.  Mrs. Grove called 2 P.M.  Public service Co have been cutting their useless poles today on 6th St.  The city taxes every pole standing.  I hitch up about 4 P. Drove E. on  Westfield road a mile.  They have been scraping it.  The roads are worse than yest.  Met J.E.M. near Crums store.  Clear Day light variable winds becoming southeasterly at night.  Gobed 9.P.

Function at Jo Reats this P.M.  I hitch up 11 A.M.  Find the terrapins in box since last Aug. doing well.  Supposed they were dead.  Lee finds he has Measles and goes home with friend to recover P.M.

Clear S.S.W.2.  Mrs. Gaines phoned last night that Patrick could do the patching at Loxa house next Sunday.  Rhoda comes to wash early.  This is great weather.  Clear with southerly light winds. I got large Ostreatus (sic.) at grave yard yest.*    I get to Loxa before left some lime at Gaines for Patrick and drove up through place Old mare byit(sic.) my middle right finger and shall lose the nail.  I saw Harman and hands shucking piece S. of house.  They began on this their last piece this morn. Lost Jack and return through finding same.  Before leaving deposit ck 42.49 at 2d.  Clear day wind becomes w. and cooler.  My damaged finger kept me awake all night.  Rhoda took out the ashes today.  Go bed 9 P.M.

Part cloudy, red. S.3.  Hitch up and start Loxa 9.30.  Drove through Loxa Mrs. Gaines says Retha was married Aug. 4 but has just divulged it.  Saw Alva Armstrong and promise to send over at once sack wood plaster for patching Loxa house.  Expected to see Harman shucking in "pond" but they had finished it.  Drove up to B.C. shed.  The  BC is baled and lies in shed on west.  After driving round the field an hour or so drove up to premises and made a stand on Harmans house.  He soon came over and after talking a while about  selling BC at 100.00 said he had to go and take Lola to  Dr. Preston & Co had gone to field and were shucking on south side NE of W 40'.  Preston says they have been shucking to feed and today J.V.H. consented to take a few loads.  My part of their shucking.  I got nearly  a sack from Preston's wagon.  It began to rain and I start home say 1.30 P.M. getting there about 3 P.M.  The rain just lays dust.   Jack went.  We ate dinner S. of house N end B.C.  The roads good.  Clear till toward noon with light drizzle much of P.M. - Over take Geo. Veach & Co. with big drove cattle at Loxa school house.   Muggs painting radiators also upper walk in W.C.  She was out with friends at night.  Gob 8 P.M.

W.1.  White frost.  Expected Cottingham to to complete WC conections.  He did not come Rhoda washed and  Alfred came to chores P.M.  Mrs.  Grove over much of P.M.  Harman hands me check  for 16,30 for my half of part of clover seed.  There will be a few dollars more.  He says threshers had 8 3/4 bu.  I pay half machine charge 100 per I hitch up late P.M. driving up town and around leave order Andrews & CO for sack wood fiber to be sent Alva Armstrong, Loxa.  Sebert will  come for my horse tomorrow morn  to shoe.  Maggie has been painting (gold) the radiators.  Read Trilby gobed 10 P.  Part cloudy day signs of rain P.M.

Clear.  S.E.1. Gas. Cottingham's men work most of AM at furnace.  They had to take off two  top section to stop leak.  Mrs. Grove was over P.M.  I try the roads south after 3 PM down by Woodson place gettinghome before 6 P took mare to Nickles.  The roads are dry except a few mud holes.   They are a silo south of Wrightsville.  There have been many silos put  this season.  Clear day; light S.E. wind.  Tue attended church at night.

Clear.  Emmett came 7.  We set him to mowing yard., which he finished 2 P.M.  and worked at clearing up furnace room most of P.M.  broke pipe.  Picked apples in bottom later 2 bushels:  will come in morn.   Mrs. Grove over P.M.  Tue ironed an hour or two.  I drove  up town AM.  Got letter from Kate with two dollars for Frank which I took over to  him AM.  The authorities released them last Friday.  Stella was to be married last Saturday one of our  most oppressive days.  My rheumatism and the heat has held me down pretty close.  Go bed  8.15

Part clear N.W. 1.  Tue and girls ironing.  Get shave at Browns AM.  We hear no more from Kate Bacon.  Mort Grove has gotten well and has gone to work.  Mrs. G still feeling poorly.  I drove SW PM and round Hen's* bottom road.  Nobody working fields today.  Saw no fungi.  I stop at J H Parker's leave word for him to go to Loxa to repair floor.  He called later in evening, will go Monday.  Folks all went to band concert an Square leaving me with Charles.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Cloudy, wind N.  Decided change in the air since last night.  Crass came to work before I was up.  Clean out weeds in garden and bottom.  Set stakes for pile of wood up on lot.  After dinner clean out  ice box at store.  Drive after supper with Tue and girls.  Cloudy most of forenoon mostly clear P.M.  Ruth brought down cocoons of black silk worms which I put on string.  Go to bed 10 P.M  Remit checks to Hillerman Bros. 31.20, K.B. Cracker Co. 2.20.

Partly cloudy. N,N,W,  The  "shower" in night might just laid the dust.  Phebe and Ora occompany (sic) friend Mrs. Campbell to Paris and left on 6.22 train.  Fix up some paint and give porch floor one first coat.  Mort is reported better this morn.  Mrs. G. not so well.  Start Loxa 10 return with cherries and start again after dinner.  Fred Harman mowing and plowing 1/2 piece of clover.  Slict helping him.  Thane have about half broken and include it with piece on west in B.C.

I went out to measure old barn &c so we  can shingle.  It is 26ft. square with one third pitch to roof. Harman says can get material same in Mattoon delivered.  Did not visit house.  Drove west part of place.  Oats looking better.  Seem to have good stand young clover with oats.  Go home through Loxa and S. road.  Stop Hedkens for buttermilk.  this has been busy day in country.  The roads are good.  Go home 6 P.M.  Kate B. called after supper.  Have promised take her over river tom.  All hands to show at night.  Gobed 9.30

Davis accepting bill of 38000 ft. bridge lumber to be delivered Aug.  "Our son" says city must have 500 ft 2" x 8" - 6' at once. Write to  Deunway sending 62.00 and order case beer.  Drive while at night with Tue.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Clear S.E.2.  Phebe went to  River early with Frances.  Tue attends church A.M.  I got paper and drove north of town two or three miles getting home 11 AM.  Saw Ben Spence talking with Jake Nickles on Monroe St.  Most of farmers are about done planting.  Seems to be much unbroken which suppose is left for B.C.  Mostly clear AM Threatening P.M. with heavy  thunder west and sprinkle rain here at 6 P.m. (.03in).  We need rain: roads are dry and becoming dusty.  Mrs. Grove complains of feeling some better.  Ph and Ora walking at night.  Have seen  nor heard anything of Kate and Stella since last Wednesday.  Part cloudy with Southerly wind.  Gobed 9

Get another rat.  I try to make corn bread for breakfast with poor success.  Tue to church AM.   I got R.H. the first we have been able to get for two weeks; then drove to timber E. where I read awhile returning home about noon.  I feel very drowsy even for me; No appetite.  Toward night I drove SW a mile or two getting in before dark.  Tue went over to Mrs. Grove's who took another treatment today.  She complains of feeling better.  Mostly clear day with fresh S.S.W. wind.  Some dirt roads very rough.  Roads mush traveled getting dusty.  Locust trees in bloom.  People are getting in work on their corn.  Tue got a Special Delivery letter from Buddy this morning.  Walter has a chance now to locate in Charleston.  Gobed 10 P.M.  Cr: trap big rat, makes 7 within weak.

Thursday, May 19, 1887,  6 AM.  Ther. 58,80?, 65.  About clear.  Were all up to breakfast this morning - something unusual.  Tue and Delia clean front room.  Shau Hart whitewashes front room and hall.  They get the carpet down and everything about washed up.  Ed Wright hauls me a large load of old straw to put on my berry patch $1.25  The silkworms are getting to be a great deal of trouble.  Big  seening party went to river this P.M.  Go bed 10.30 PM.
