13.  Sunday  6.45 AM.  Ther  52. 60.  43 =  51 2/3

Cloudy NW wind  Intended on going to ran(?) today whole family, but too cool and  windy.  Maggie not very well, she had the hives at night.  I start at 9 AM for ranch, cold and windy and  thick with smoke and mist.  Cleared off P.M.  Comer has been cutting the timber along road to Handly ford.  White sow had pigs yesterday.  Milt  and family after walnuts P.M. and not there when left.  Clear night, light going for good  gibed 9.30 P.M.

AM.  Ther 33.

Clear heavy  white frost.  Took mare to Dr. Montgomerys house but man not at home  Start for timber before noon getting there before 1 P.M.  Rogers and Riley cut logs in P.M. with good deal of hard luck, cut big sycamore in Fritz hollow but not sound.  Milt got in about 8 PM with hay and Frank Mote.  Clear cool day go bed about 10 P.M.    St(?) called at night saying wood take cattle up to Uncle John in Morn.

Mostly clear.  Tue feeling badly.  Simon was up yesterday and took out bitts for lumber  Tue and Ferd decide to go to Mattoon with Mort and Kate on 2.45 train.  Marie also went.  I drove out to Gaines and find them gone away so I went to Mattoon  Couldn't find any of my folks but Gaines and wife found me and she and children rode out with  me getting to farm about  10 P.M.  Jo came soon after on train stay all night  - Go bed 10.30 PM

14.  Sunday 5 AM.  Ther  55? 

Clear.  I left for home before breakfast.  Cow out all night and no chores done last night.  Clyde was  gone all day and all night.  Came 10 AM  looking for cow most of day.  Tue and I drive with Marie out to Berts toward night getting home 9.30.  Borrow 200.00 more of Irene giving her out note for $250.00  at 7 per ct  This covers 50.00 for Phebe and bal. on Minton note  Rene starts for Oklahoma Tuesday to be gone two weeks  We drove through Loxa on way home.  Someone threw at buggy.  Gobed 10 PM

Mostly clear E3.  Tue slpet in N. chamber last night.  We got a letter from Phebe.  She has got located at Havana Ill.  I send her address to H.A. Neal.  Drive uptown fir steak A.M.  Mrs. ONeal called P.M.  Simultanessly peddler calls.  Mrs. Reed came with half bushel fime peaches 70 c  Paul Harman borrows new buggy while his is at shop and I hitch to old buggy driving S.W. to Phipps road getting home for supper.  Mrs. Curd spent evening here.  I retire before she leaves.  Clear with fresh N.E. wind.  Paul Harman and sister are attending Normal.  They drive in every morn.  Gobed 9

10.  Wednesday 5.30.  AM.  Ther.  54.  86.  68.  =  69 1/3
Clear. N.E. 1.  Rhoda came and worked till 2 P.M.  Pd check 1.00 get shave AM. Pd.  Try to  find Steve Decker up in Anderson.  He doesn't live there.   Paid brings back buggy 9 A.M.  Starting at 4.30 P.M.  Tue and I drive E. to river at old Ashmore ford.  The river is dry there some holes above and below ford.  We did not go any farther E. on account of Tractor on hill E. get home 6.30 P.M.  Tue went to P.M. with Mrs. B. Self broke recent pledge slightly today by taking chew of tobacco.  The roads are very dusty.  Clear Moderate N.E. winds Go bed 9  Tu canned Peaches AM.

11.  Thursday.  5.30. AM.  Ther.  64.  92.  70.  =  75 1/3
Mostly clear. haze. S.E. 1. gas.  Tue continues to can peaches.  Reed's were best we ever had.  We had intention of going to Loxa but got up too late.  Clouds up P.M. with thunder and sprinkle about 3 P.M.  More rain 9 P.M. and later.  I drove down to Fritz's late P.M.  He is busy at work for while - plumber.  tue was up town at with Mrs. Curd.  Meanwhile Mort & K came and stay until nearly 10.  He is working at the Normal.  Will fix our porch in short time.Rain slow much of night, no thunder.  N.E. 2.  Go bed 10 P.M.  R.54

Cloudy N.E. 2  Light rain in night to 7 this morning .54.  It quit rain before 7 AM.   I  hunt up Bill Hatton finding him at Joe's.  He will work for for me tomorrow.  After dinner Tue went up town and to Hat's and I decide about 2 P.M. to go to Loxa.  Pay J.H. Pinnell a/c 16.95 ck.
I went N. Jack went,  Saw C.H. Jones.  Oakley moved out about Sept. C.H.J. and  self decide not to rent to  Theodore Arnold who wants the house, until make repairs my be not then.  I went on up through place.  Much seed in SW clover.   Corn does not promise much.  I drove to house and to front gate but found gate out of order and return through
loxa.  Four calves, unknown, pasturing on  S. end.  Darling has moved to J.O. Linder place.  I got  home after seven oclock.  Mostly cloudy day with N.E. wind  Go bed 9.

13.   Saturday.  6 AM.Ther.  52.  74.  60.  = 62
Mostly clear. N.1.  Bill Hatton came before 7 AM. and goes to work allover place.  Helps hitch up.  I take she to Evans for repair.  Pay Nickles Bro. a/c 8.50 ck.  They are building big stable on site of Sam Rays old barn.   Call at Andrews and think can get coal to send @ 2.90.  Bill cuts  old cherry (Gov Wood)  SW. of house.  It has beeb there 30 years.  PM. he cut up two willow trees that had fallen across the branch, took trash &c. out of ditch on 5th St. and cut up old kindling.  Pay him in full 1.50 ck.  We will come Monday.  Learn that Jake Daizy is dead to be buried tomorrow.  I am off in my feed and made batch mush at night clear mostly with Northeasterly wind  Go. bed. 9.

Most clear.  Easterly wind, hazy.  I went  to Dorschs for piece of ham before breakfast.  After get paper  Tue and I decide to go out to  Berts.  We start 11.50 taking lunch which ate on road near Alex Martins.  Helen with children was there also (?) Ferrish.  think corn some better out there than at Loxa.  We went and returned S. road start home say 5. P.  Autos very numerous on road.  My buggy wheels getting worse.  Bert says not safe.  Get home 7.  Part clear day easterly moderate wind Gobed 9.

Cloudy. E.2.  Light rain began 6.  Bill Hatton came 7 AM. working an hour at stable, rain continued and He went home about 8 A to return later.  Learn that Geo. Drake is lately dead and buried today.  Write O.C. fg Co. about bad rear wheels of buggy.  We hitch up but don't drive till nearly 5 P.M. when rain slacked up.  Went up and got shoe at Evan's, loaf of bread mail letter.  Got caught in quite a shower.  Bass Chism stops me wants to rent the farm.  I spend two hours AM. furnace room built good fire and clean up some.  Am suspicious of old furnace but will make it answer if possible.  More rain at night till bed time.  Rian today 1.51 in.  I get slightly warmer at night.  Go bed 9 PM.

Cloudy S.4. mist. and light rain.  Hatton didn't come.  I  hitch up  and drive out to Dicewoods looking for mushrooms.  Nothing doing.  Rene and Helen came A.M. and stay to dinner.  Helen is starting again at Normal.  She will stay with us a shile.  Jo Drake was buried today.  I saw Milt at Clarks  Have not seen him for years.  I get bale of alfalfa and bush corn at I.B. Mitchells.  Mostly cloudy day some light rain. P.M. all (.10).  Mort and  kate were over at night.  I write for S.R. & Co. Catalog.  Go bed 9.30

Cloudy and raining since 5. S.2.  Rhoda came to wash.  I put mare in pasture last night.     Drive up to see Tate but wait and hour and didn't.   Bill Hatton worked P.M. Harman phones and wants me to come over in morning.  I half promise to but fear roads too bad.  I drove up to Dicewood P.M>  Loping to get mess of abruptus  Met many hunters and others but find no fungi.  Very light showers P.M> with mild thunder.  Mrs. Pinnell and  Mrs. curd get some pears.   Tue gets letter from Kate Perrill.  Laura is in hospital where she has had a serious operation recently.  Tue went ofer to Goves at night.  Mostly  cloudy day varible winds.  showers.  Gobed 9.

Cloudy. N.1.  Rhoda came and washed and ironed till 2 P.M.  Pd ck 1.00  Self not very well.  My side doesn't trouble much but appetite has failed.  4.30 P.M. drove to Gee bridge to soak old buggy M. Replogle &co seining there.  I return via  Wrights home 6.30.  Tue went to Hat's the girls went for her 9 oc.  Mostly clear day with moderate N.E. wind.  gobed 9.30

25.  Friday  5.30 AM.  Ther.  56.  86.  74.  = 72.

Clear N.E.2.  Normal Summer School closed today.  I drove AM E. to River near Big Four bridge.  The river at old Ashmore ford nearly dry.  Very few oats fit to cut E. of town, corn looking badly is (?) in many fields.  Toward night I drove out to Cemetery.  Many fruit trees are dying.  Muggs not very well.  Consults Dr. Starr.  Phebe at supper at Fern's.  Tue Grove's at night.  Clear day light easterly  winds.  gobed 10.

About clear.  Got shave at May's Shop, also hair cut owe him 35 c.   Tue and self drove out to Uncle John's toward night taking him a little grub, cooler day go bed 9 P.M.

25.  Wednesday.  5.30  A.M.  Ther.  70.  88.  72.

Went out to  Berts in forenoon getting back about noon.  Met him on road.  Took Mare to John Rice P.M. to shoe in front.  Pay WE Hill for some butter got there yesterday.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Clear, SW.2.  was warm night.  O. Hudson takes job of mow yard but back outs after working an hour.  Pd. .15c all.  He helped hitch up .Mc N. did not appear A.M.  Oscar says Emmett has found last garden fork.  They work a little at furnace cleaning up fire pot nothing else.  Today proves to be the warmest of season up to date.  So I keep pretty quiet.The weeds and grass are getting the better of us.  It is hard to get any kind of help.  I drove out by fairground toward night met load of hay over turned near Decker Springs.  Tue got home 7 P.M. from Bert's where she has been since last Friday.  Phebe went P.M. to W.E. Hills to Recep. for Fern Rickett.  Mostly clear day, hazy wind S.W. to N.  Tue got a letter from Buddy P.M.  Gobed 9.30

Clear, wind N.E.  Go up and get mare to tke Tue out to Uncle John's.  While waiting for her there was alarm of fire proved to be Geo McNutt's house which burned also several stables and other houses took fire.  There was something wrong with the waterworks and it got pretty good start before pressure came.  Drove while with Tue before noon.  Geo Weber over P.M.  Drove with children round town toward night.  Tue learns that Fan sent for Dr. this morning.  Clear day N.E. wind go bed 9 PM.

Clear N.E.2.  Drive round a while trying to find McNeel but don't.  Write to Mrs.  Sexton about fence.  I start out to Bert's at 10 AM.  Tue seems to be enjoying herself and will remain until Thursday.  Bert cutting oats.  We drove up to  his field after dinner.  Crops look fine out there.  I felt worse than usual today.  Start home about 6 P.M., didn't reach there  till near dark.  The roads are dry and becoming level.  No rain at Bert's yesterday.  Fair day light N.E. to S. E. winds.  Phebe away at night.  Go bed 9.30

Clear.  Fan and family came about 9 AM`and stay till 7 PM.  Bought mutton at Lees .35  tomatoes .25  salt 20.  Tue made ice cream.  After dinner went out to the races staying till 4 oclock .  Saw Geo Weber, he talk rather favorable about my going to Mattoon.  He has been tending bar for Harry Holmes about a month.  Tue went to Concert at Christian Church at night leaving me with baby.  Father went to bed and the girls were up to Davis.  Uncle John was in town says Bert has left.  10 PM.

Cloudy SW 3  There was light showers (to) about 3 AM.  Threatening morn.  I got  R.H. and then stat for timber E. but return after getting halfway occasional weather.  Storm struck us about noon.  Heavy rain with great thunder and lightning for short time.    Tue phones no rain at Bert's.  After dinner late P.M. drove to woods E.  No mushrooms worth bring home.  Return by Westfield road, getting home 6.30.  Take Mare to Nickles.  Phebe out at night with Ora.  Go bed 9.30

Thursday, July 21, 1887,  6 AM  Ther.  75.  95.  73.

Cloudy but soon clears off.  Several very light showers with some thunder in night.  Maggy walked out of bed in night but didn't happen to hurt her.  Get another letter from Cuthbert saying he could get 10c rate and would take several cars red oak @17.oo  Start down to timber about 9 AM and get back at 4.  Mare behaved very well.  Some cloudy.  Showers in distance.  Apparently heavy thunder shower passed south of us about 4 PM.  Tue  has been ironing today.  Air close, cooler night.  Gobed 9 PM.
