4.  Tuesday  6 30 AM  Ther

Cloudy work all day on election board with Mountjoy, Owens, Wiley & Co  Didn't get home and to bed till 2 AM 5th  The election in town democratic as was expected, but no definite news before I went to bed 2 AM.

5.  Wednesday 8 AM.  Ther 40  67  50

Pleasant day.  Jeff started for Arkansas at  5 AM. H.G. and others at 2 or 3 PM.  Much rejoicing among democrats on result of election  Checkly sheriff and Henly judge only ones on Co ticket elected by Reps.  Feel badly today, headache.  business very lively much drunking.  Gobed 11 P.M.

4.  Monday.  6 AM.  Left Sag Harbor for New York at 9.10 AM where I arrive 2 P.M.  Crossed Brooklyn Bridge and went to Navy yard.  Geo Holland's vessel Keasarge not there but foot 34th St NR.  Stop at Grand Union Hotel near Depot retiring about 9 P.M.  Pleasant day and warmer. 

5.Tuesday.  6 AM Election Day in city.  I spent day running round either on foot of 34 but saw no way to reach  Keasarge  Happen on to Geo Holland in 42 St. who was the only ac(?) I met in N.Y. Cloudy chilly day.  Retired same place 9 P.M. and had to get up to pay my bill which didn't like  While in N.Y. ate at Childs resturant 42 St near depot.

Charleston, Illinois on October 15,1887

15, Saturday,  6.45  A.M.  Ther.  40.  63.  50.   White Frost
Clear N.E.  Walk down to  (?) Depot to see about pay for lumber.  Stop at gas well while.  Went up to new school house.  The walls are about completed and they are putting up rafters. Easton & Decker finish up pile of wood on yard.  Uncle John in P.M.  Let him have old watch to trade for pigs.  Comer was in, wants me  to carry cost of switch ties till pay day but can't do it.  Pleasant day with S.W. wind.  Buy veal  and sausage at Mountjoy, 35c  Gobed 9.30 P.M.

September 29, 1887 in Coles county, IL

29, Thursday, 6.30 AM  Ther.  57. 71.  58.
Partly clear.  Moon shone good deal in night.  Rheumatism worse.  Received $9.20 in full for empties from J. Walker Brewery Co.  Get pants at Felix owe him $2.10 on them.  Pay J. Rall and Mountjoy.  Tue  hangs out Mondays washing.  Buy grapes at W.E. Hills.  South East wind morning turns cooler afternoon sprinkle rain two or three times  P.M.  Tue and the girls have caught bad colds so has baby.  Get order for another 2000 ft lumber for Township from Noble which send down Claud Comer.  Snider brought in basket of melons for pickles.  Gobed 9 PM.
