Mostly cloudy, wind SW.  The girls start to school this morning to public schools.  They had been going to Miss Whitlemore since October.  Tom Rice brought big piece of ice form Bishops pond about 3 inches thick.  Mrs. Rogers washed AM.  Maunie Lang went back to school.  Learn that Latta has bought the Wait place SE of town.  Buy load of coal of Reicters.  Wind got round to NW before noon.  Mostly.  Mostly cloudy chilly day  Gobed midnight ~

Cloudy, NW wind.  I (?) round house all day.   Sort over in den awhile P.M.  Maggie is getting ready to return to school tomorrow AM.  Miss Ford arrives from NY PM, were expecting her.  Moderate day.  Sun shone out about noon.  Gobed 9 P.M.  Snow at night.  Took a wire in my right tumb P.M.

Part cloudy.  Southwind.  Pete came 7.45 A.M;  we hitch up gray horse (Warren) and ride nearly to the  the river on Ashmore Road.    She drives alright.  Change for Queen and go over to Col's house.  McClaskeys still  have possession of farm.  Pete and I (?) on shop door  shop door at H.G.s.  Self toothache  Gobed  730 PM

9.  Thursday, 6.30 AM.  Ther.

Poultry Ass has big big show.  Bacon on hand.  He had a good scare on R.R. crossing PM just messing limited train.

Gray horse loose in barn all night.  Tue neuralgia all day and night.

Tue stays in bed all day with neuralgia.  Put in much of day keeping house warm.  Our coal is more than half gone.    Chas Love wants to rent H.G. house..  I did not hitch up today.  They are graveling roads a good deal North and East of Charleston.  Ferd here at night, also last night.  Girls went to  went to church.  I read till  9 oc.

Tue still sick with neuralgia and slept but little last night.  She is in south chamber. Shave at Ed Browns AM Paying him in full 25c.  Tue did not get up today and sent for Dr. Patton at night.   He came left meddy.  Tue keeping a/c of provision &c bought.  

14.  Tuesday.

Tue feeling some easier but kept bed all day.  Circut court in session.  Hanley and Daugherty case being tried for fourth time.  The Col. went to work for Shoots yesterday and quiet  on a/c of his health.  Tue sleeps in south room with Marie  Gobed 9 P.M.  

15.  Wednesday.  6 AM.

Tue  about same Does not get much sleep.  Bill Scott calls two or three times to see about renting H.Gs place for Tom Trimble.  Phone send for Dr. Patton again toward night.   Tue still sleeps south room.

16.  Thursday.

Mrs. Handley  in case against Daugherty  got $50.00 Damage.  Tue feeling some better but remains in bed.    Trimble moves into H.G's house PM.  They caught a forger, he ha been passing checks round town.  

17.  Friday.

Tue came down to breakfast. first time since last since last Saturday.  Called to see Tom Tremble P.M.  He thinks pump will need fixing.  Will Goodman kicking about  5th St. being filled up between Van and Jackson.  Van B. also nearly impassible bet 5th and 6th.   I finish reading Felix Grass  The Terror.

Dr. Blair died this morning suddenly 7 AM.  Tue was up all day but doesn't feel very well.

Tue not feeling well this morning.  Phebe to Paris with friend.

Tue still feeling puny, but is round at work.  Love boys undertake to carry wood into cellar towards night but don't finish.  Tue sends $5.00 cash to Maggie in letter.  Tue feeling badly all day and at night but did not decide to call in Dr.

Cloudy, foggy, Light showers in night wind South Easterly.  Earl Decker leaves horse in barn.  I sign note with him for 10.00 90 days.  He intends to get married next week.  Alex weighs 8 lb.  Big Alex 10 lb.  The freeze is not not yet out of ground.  Dem and Rep. Tp primaries today and big crowd of men on streets P.M.  Tue called in Dr. Patton to consult.  She has decided to begin doctoring for her trouble and will go to his office tomorrow morning.  She and Clara begin piecing quilt P.M.  I went  up town after supper but could not learn result of the primaries.   Cloudy day with occasional sprinkle rain heavy showers after dark and in night  wind southerly.  gobed 10.30 P.M.

Cloudy S.E. wind. showers last night.  Went with Tue to Pattons after breakfast - first time. A showery morn  Fix stall for brown cow.  Look for calf very soon: The freeze not yet out of ground.  River water very muddy  Cistern pumped dry yesterday.  Clara got letter from Harvey :  first since they left last Wednesday.  Wind changes to N.W. before with snow flurries.  Coal about about out today but didn't need much fire.  Tue feeling better than she expected to after treatment.   Gobed 9 PM.

Mostly clear.  Southerly wind.  Mrs Owens washes AM  Clara helps Tue sew clothesline broke down.  Take Evans pair of sho?es to mend.  Says will take cow and wants her at once.  Take out 20 lbs timothy and clover seed which horses get at  Jo grubbing out willow down near Loxa.  John and Edith there.  they will take cow whose horns have been removed to town tomorrow  I decide to remain all night.  Mostly clear day with violent southwind.  Sleep with Jo in SE corner E room.  Gobed 9 PM.   I went with Tue when she took treatment AM.

Cloudy SW wind.  Turns colder in night.  Jo was up before 3 AM.  Cow very gentle and  they lead her to town leaving her at Evans' AM.  Put calf in my barn  Brown cow no calf yet.  Udder seems to be caling and I milk her twice in PM.  Clara ironing.  Maggie went to Champaign for a few days visit.  I took her to 11.38 AM. train.  Kate went with Kate Grove  to Prescilla Club meet at Dr. Starr's.  Snow flurries during day.  Mostly cloudy, eith high winds S.W.  Take Ferd down to his Grandma's toward night.  Play cinch with Phebe Marie and Clara till bedtime.  10.30 PM.

Cloudy west wind snowing-light- house pretty cool- no coal in the cellar.    Tue has a bad spell after breakfast.  Pay Clara Fisher 4.55 fo C. Pinatil furnace repairs last fall.  Brown cow has yellow male calf AM. other calf eats corn and oats all night - consider it weaned.  Clara went to du?tesls P.M.  Cloudy day with  frequent snow flurries westerly wind  Didn't go up town  Play cinch at night with Tue and girls.  House has been cool today.  No coal in the cellar, about half inch snow at night.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Cloudy, N.W. wind.  Learn on street that Wall has sold out his saloon to Casey party.  Have not seen him.  Dr. Patton came down and gave Tue treatment says he is going away for a week.  Clara get letter from her mother, first since they left.  Trobough carries coal down cellar.  Didn't settle with him.  I call to see Evans milk the cow let him horn: seems to be all right.  Mort and Kate were over at night.  Phebe to dance with Ben Hill.  Gobed 10 PM. -

Clear N.W. wind.  Evans sends word before breakfast to take cow away says will keep her two or three months if can milk her.  Mrs. E. has got scared.  Bandy takes cow to milk A.M.  Dick Wright calls P.M. and will work for me Monday.  Get another 1/2 j Hillsborrough Coal of Richter P.M. which they deliver at barnyard.  Pay up Bandy for butter.  Went with Tue to Patton's office for treatment 4 P.M.  Clara away at night taking bird.  Mort and Kate over at night.  I drove up town after supper calling at Evan's for shoes which didn't get.  Self not feel very well today.  Mostly clear day streets not bad and drying  fast Gobed 10 PM.

Clear.  Tue feeling badly this morning.  Dr. Patton called to say he was going away to he gone about a week.  I  made some small repairs on harness and clean up buggy some.  Slept a while after dinner.  Hitched up Queen before noon.  Toward night drove south of town and round town some streets getting good some heavy in country.  Clear day, Southerly wind.  Very pleasant and many people out riding and walking.  Tue and Clara telling snake stories at night  Gobed 10 PM

Clear.  SW wind.  There was an alarm of fire in night.  Mrs. Owens washed AM.  Fix up clothes line.  Tue feeling badly all day.  She went over to Grove's at. Dick Wright did not come as promised.  Learn he is sick.  Partly cloudy day with strong sw wind and warmest we have had for several months  Play cinch at night with Clara and Marie Gobed 10 PM

Cloudy sprinkles rain .  Strong southwind I start to Gaines 9 AM.  Find him grubbing on Tue's north  twenty.  John and wife still there.  He asks permission to stay two months which I didn't grant. Get home  for dinner.  Shirley has cut a few stalks south of house.  Roads good all the wau.  Brought Gaines clock again for repairs.  Clara finished ironing.  I went up town for coffee at night.  Mort and Kate over at night  Tue wuit taking medicine and feels some better  Cloudy day with frequent light showers.  Lightning after dark  Gobed 10 PM.

Cloudy high SW wind.  Got telephone message from Gaines that white hourse was choked.  Thought to go out but too cold.  Learn at night that horse was all right.  Talk with Garrison at night.  He paid me Wall's rent for month ending today.  Got letter from AL & T. Co. saying couldn't loan on City R.E. but could do so on Loxa farm.  One of  worst days this mo.  Strong westwind with light snow.  Self and Tue feeling badly and both retire early.  Phebe out at night  Gobed 8 AM.

Part cloudy.  N.3.  Ice 5/8 in.  snow flys most of A.M.  Order ton of coal (nut) from B. Pa &  Co which came 2 P.M.  We needed it badly.  Tue attends Emma Knock funeral P.M. and then went over to Mrs. Curds.~L.D. Norton called signing collector receipt which he had forgotten.  Paul Warman calls leaving horse at shed at night.  I fear will not like new lot of coal.  The house has felt cold all day.  Part clear day snow flying much of day.  License was voted down in Mattoon and a large portion of state yesterday  Gob 8 P.M.

Clear. N.W.2. wh. fr. ice 1/2 in.  Billy Hatton came but didn't expect him.  He works m(?) if day in bottom cleaning up in bottom:  cutting up fallen willows.  Worked a while at wood pile later. and before quitting carries up coal for night.  The new coal does not show up well.  John S. Parker calls an hour or two P.M.  Since Mrs. P. died he is batching.  Bill will come in morn but too wet to spade garden, quits at 5 now. ~  Mrs. Will Stoddert called P.M.  Most clear day light N.W. wind.  Later.  Tue went to town.  The Morties were over 7.30 to 9.30 P gobed 9.30 P.

Clear or nearly so.  light white frost.  H.G. thinks there is not doubt about license this year.  I start to timber at 9.30 taking two bags orchard  and blue grass seed.  Get  Steve Decker to  sow it on ground we have cleaned up.  The other boys work at burning off N. of middle hallow.  found two gaps down in my fence.  Got home at 8 P.M. pretty tired.  Kink and Warren were hauling out ties.  Go bed 9.30 P.M.  Warm with S. wind.  Very dry .  Had good deal of trouble with the fires today clouds up at night and sprinkle rain.

Cloudy tart at 9 AM.  Wind S. sp rain on way   Boys cutting on ridge making wood fence.  O.D. and others worked P.M.  burning brush and helping hang gate near house.  All the cleaned ground is now seeded.  Steve finished sowing the S.W. corner this  AM.  The enclosed field  sown last winter is up nicely but needs rain.  The whole county is suffering from drouth.  Buckeye leaving out.  An occasional peach blossom open - the trees are very full.  Service berry in full bloom.  River getting pretty well down.  Got home at 8 PM.  Gobed 10.45 PM.-

Clear.  S.3. Pay telephone for Feb. 1.70  Helen, John and Geo. came 9 A. to stay the day.  I intended to go to sale at McNeil's old shop but didn't feel able.  After dinner order mare and drive SW to Sam Walters gate, getting home about 4 P.M.  Tue went up town with Helen and children before 3 P.  Found roads generally good but I drove mostly gravel road, Jack  went with me.  I drove round by Hattons.  He will come Monday if a good day.  Leave mare at Nickles.  Crawford brought me home.  There is much snow in banks yet along fences and in the woods.  This is first day have driven mare since Jan 31.  Harryman's BC warehouse burned 8 PM.  Gobed 9.30

S.1.  Strong gas.  Light white frost.  Make little  fire furnace A.M.  Tue went to church and got paper.  We had dinner 1 P.M.  Order mare at noon and 2.30 P. drove down Kickapoo road going down by Normal and west at Tom Phipps farm.  Found some pretty tough road but none serious.  Nothing starting much  Pussy Willow earliest.  Catkins on hazel.  The  worst roads were on  road leading E. from Woodson.  Jack went with  me and got treated bad by dog at that farm I came by gravel road meeting several autos.  I got home 3 P.M.  Taking mare to Nickles later.  Clear day light southerly winds.  Tue not well, did not go to church.  Gobed 9.30

Part cloudy.  W.2.  Bill came 7 to work.  He took out all ashes recovering dump to  DR grate.  Trims up much of trees not finished, however.  He went down for IE McRoller Rake yard and begin rolling will come in the morn.  Part cloudy and much cooler than (?) w. to N.W. winds.  I was out doors most of time today and get  pretty well tired out.  Gobed 8.30

cloudy S.2.  Bill finished rolling  "Andy" Cooper took JEM roller to C Lee's.  It rained lightly much of forenoon but Bill worked much of time in barn where we hung a door after much trouble as light rain continued I paid him off at noon ck 2.25.  He will work for Paddy McNeil tomorrow and on L.D. Norton collector calls PM  and I pay him Lafayette taxes $162.58,  It is  some higher than last year.  The young man failed to  sign the tax receipt.  Later Arthur Johns Collector Hutton Tp. came and I pay Hutton taxes 38.02 which is the highest in recent years.  Most cloudy day light showers at times very dark from NW at 3 P.M. growing colder with strong N.W. wind.  Tue went up to  library for book after supper.  Have not investigated Charleston taxes yet but will soon as go up town.  They will return books Apl 1 Norton said.  Gobed 8.30

Clear. N.4.  Today takes good fires again.  Order ton of coal from B.Pa + Co they deliver 10 Am.  think about 600 lbs. on hand yet.  This last order makes over nineteen tons for the past  season.  T.W.P. I fix up solder outfit and repair some tin cups P.M.  Had to est the precipitation yesterday at .10 ins.  Hatton called and want to work tomorrow.  Mostly clear with light northerly   Tue went to church at night with Mrs. Brooks.  Gobed 9.30

Cloudy and snowing N.E.5.  Snow seems to be about six inches deep.  Drifted badly and can't tell much about.  Phebe got away at 5.40 for 5.55 car.  She  soon returns no chance of her to make Havana trip today.  The  Methodist church was destroyed with only $6,000 ins.  It was valued at 22,000.  Cold and stormy most of day with light snow till toward. (sic)  The late coal is half slack and snow.  This makes mud.  Alfred came to chore but employed him mostly digging out  paths.  Will come tomorrow P.M.  Chas still sick.  Godbed 8.30 P.M.

Clear.  NE.2.  Phebe makes another start on 6 car getting far as Mattoon  Can get no farther for day or two.  Order through 436 Same to be sent today.  Phebe gets home before noon.  Mrs. Curd called P.M.  H.G.  went to Interurban Sta for  same toward night.  ~~  Alfred did chores.  I did not get out.  We get yesterday's R.H. today.  The storm was general through middle west and traffic is still  tied up  Phebe will try  H again  tomorrow morning.  Clear day with light N.E. winds.  gobed 9

Clear. E.1.  Phebe got off on 5.55 car.  Rhoda came 7 AM. to wash getting done by noon. Pd. 75c.  Tue expects to do ironing herself.  Alfred came but Tue  tells him to wait till the marrow.  She went up town late P.M. and incidentally over to Grove's.  It is supposed that the old Vail stable property  N.W. cor Mad and 6th has been selected for P.O.  clear day southerly light wind.  Self and Tue  not well both grouchy.  Gobed 9.

MO.  Says Muggs advised him to write me about mushrooms.  Alfred  did chores.  We owe him for three trips.  Tue  got home about  5 P.M.  Harman phones at night.  Will finish hauling BC tomorrow.  Part clear day hazy.  Light SW winds  Gobed 8.30

Fog early.  We ate breakfast 9 AM.  Tue ironing AM.  She went to RC at Elwoods 2 P.M.  We were disappointed at not hearing from Phebe today.  Grace Sefton called P.M. to inquire about the girls.  Alfred calls but don't let him work.  Tue gets home about 6 P.M.  Most clear day except fog a while in morning.  Harman called 4 P.M. having gotten through with the BC.  He got  110.00 for straight and 50.00 for crook.  I got 276.46 for my third.  This  is from say 35 acres. a poor crop and badly handled.  Cliff paid me also for load of soft corn forgotten in un settling 12.00 Jan 31. and for load of corn recently sold.  Bert Tuple 111.30 all one check 23.30  There are several items still unsettled, other corn &c.  Mostly clear at night gob 10 P

Depositing at 2nd BC ch 276.46 and Harman ch for corn 23.30 getting  book balanced, went back to pay Gray and Gray. 10.00 and J.H. Pinnell 15.22 chk both for accounts in full to date.  Tue  gets some Codfish.    T.W.P.  Tue  ironing P.M.  Alfred chores at night and Tue  pays him in full and 40 cts. more on next week 1.00  Part cloudy day with westerly wind.  It  clouds up after noon say 1 P.M. and sprinkle of rain. Light sps- at say 8 P.M. and snow flurries in night.  I got suddenly cooler about 8 P.M.  Then falls  ten degs in an hour.   With violent wind all night.  Gobed 9

Mean temperature, three observations daily.  26.1 degrees  Maximum 52 on 2d and 17th Minimum 2 on the 25th  Clouds 40% Precipitation 2.50 inches.  Snow say 15 in.  Winds N 1 2/3 days, N.E. 8 days;  E.3 2/3 days; S.E. 2/3 days.  South 4 days; SW 2 2/3 days; West 4 1/3 days and Northwest 3 days.  Warmest day 2d 42 degs.  Coldest 7 deg. average on 12th Precipitation about normal.  The ground is frozen solid but not very deep.  Corn Loxa 55.  Oats 35.  Hogs 8.00  Butter 30 Eggs 30.  Town branch running light stream.   Think roads rough but passable.  They will not be any better very soon.  There is considerable.  snow and ice on the ground in patches.  Side walks have been covered with ice for two or three weeks.  Greatest days of precipitation 6th .55 in.  R and Sleet. 12-13th. 12-13th .41 in. Average temperature 54.6  Maximum on 10th 84  Minimum on 31st 28.  Rain on ten days  4.47 in.  Cloudiness 49 percent  Snow on two days 20th and 29th about 1 inch.  Wind during month was N 5 1/3,  NE 3 2/3, E  2,  SE 2 1/3,  S 7 2/3, SW 1.  W.  2 and NW 7 days.  First  half month warm latter half cooler with some heavy rains.  Dirt roads have been quite muddy recently.  Most of rain has entered the ground.  The streams are beginning to run.  There has been great scarcity of water in places.  The city supply seems to be ample.  Little shrinking done as yet.  Don't think  elevators are buying any.

Neal.  Drive uptown fir steak A.M.  Mrs. ONeal called P.M.  Simultanessly peddler calls.  Mrs. Reed came with half bushel fime peaches 70 c  Paul Harman borrows new buggy while his is at shop and I hitch to old buggy driving S.W. to Phipps road getting home for supper.  Mrs. Curd spent evening here.  I retire before she leaves.  Clear with fresh N.E. wind.  Paul Harman and sister are attending Normal.  They drive in every morn.  Gobed 9

Cloudy N.E. 2  Light rain in night to 7 this morning .54.  It quit rain before 7 AM.   I  hunt up Bill Hatton finding him at Joe's.  He will work for for me tomorrow.  After dinner Tue went up town and to Hat's and I decide about 2 P.M. to go to Loxa.  Pay J.H. Pinnell a/c 16.95 ck.
I went N. Jack went,  Saw C.H. Jones.  Oakley moved out about Sept. C.H.J. and  self decide not to rent to  Theodore Arnold who wants the house, until make repairs my be not then.  I went on up through place.  Much seed in SW clover.   Corn does not promise much.  I drove to house and to front gate but found gate out of order and return through
loxa.  Four calves, unknown, pasturing on  S. end.  Darling has moved to J.O. Linder place.  I got  home after seven oclock.  Mostly cloudy day with N.E. wind  Go bed 9.

N.1.  Bill Hatton came before 7 AM. and goes to work allover place.  Helps hitch up.  I take she to Evans for repair.  Pay Nickles Bro. a/c 8.50 ck.  They are building big stable on site of Sam Rays old barn.   Call at Andrews and think can get coal to send @ 2.90.  Bill cuts  old cherry (Gov Wood)  SW. of house.  It has beeb there 30 years.  PM. he cut up two willow trees that had fallen across the branch, took trash &c. out of ditch on 5th St. and cut up old kindling.  Pay him in full 1.50 ck.  We will come Monday.  Learn that Jake Daizy is dead to be buried tomorrow.  I am off in my feed and made batch mush at night clear mostly with Northeasterly wind  Go. bed. 9.

Drake is lately dead and buried today.  Write O.C. fg Co. about bad rear wheels of buggy.  We hitch up but don't drive till nearly 5 P.M. when rain slacked up.  Went up and got shoe at Evan's, loaf of bread mail letter.  Got caught in quite a shower.  Bass Chism stops me wants to rent the farm.  I spend two hours AM. furnace room built good fire and clean up some.  Am suspicious of old furnace but will make it answer if possible.  More rain at night till bed time.  Rian today 1.51 in.  I get slightly warmer at night.  Go bed 9 PM.

P.M.  Order four Mayda lamps from Pub service Co.  Tue gets letter from Phebe AM.  Miller will go to Loxa to repair old house in morn.  I hitch up 10 A.M.  After dinner drove up voting mixed ticket.  There drive E. part of town and over to Anderson.  fetch up later at Whalens elevator* where pay coal and cobs bill.  37.45 to date.  They brought us 4 new Masdas for which owe them 1.80.  rs. Lizzie Highland Vail came with  son Frank and stay the night.  They live at Portland, Ore.  We had good visit with them.They came E a/c Mrs. Moores death.  We are about out of coal and neglect to get more today.  Clear day light northerly winds.  The roads are dry.  They are scraping them level in places today.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Clear.  N.W. 1.  It seemed funny to build fires without any fuel.  Rhoda came early to wash.  Helen H. called Lizzie and Frank went away about 9 AM will come again before leaving.   I find lot old letters have been looking for a week.  Hitch up 10.30 A.  and drive up town. before dinner.  Rhoda here to dinner.  Tue is getting started to cleaning house.  I begin on lot of old checks &c. and get them in shape to  pack away  up in attic.   Spent most of P.M. at same.  Tue attends picture show at church at night.  Mrs. Grove was over an hour or two P.M.  Clear day with light northwesterly winds.  Tom Shoemaker tells me  he got 204 maj. as mayor yesterday.    Get ton Harrisonville nut coal of Tuckers.  They deliver it P.M.  Suppose Ad Miller to work at Loxa house today.  Gobed 9.30

Cloudy.  N. 3. was cold when woke up owing to no fire.  Paper did not come but got a letter from Phebe.  It began to snow heavily about 10 AM and continued.  The  report in town papers yesterday that river rising and about reached furnace fires at water works.  This morn, no pressure, no water.  It is said they are shipping water from Mattoon.  I nearly finish the coal building fire this morn.  Order load W.Bros.& G.  It came about 2 P.M. 1500 lb. Tower Hill.  P.H. didn't come A.M.  By 4 P.M. the snow is .6 in or more.  I got now paper except Courier today.  The  storms and floods have been immense all over the west worse in Ohio, Nebraska and Indiana.  The mails are all "nix" W.W. shut down by high water.  River higher than ever before.  Reported thousands of people drown in Ohio floods.  Peru, Ind., Terre Haute and mostly any where. Helen phoned evening asking how was getting along.  I ate quite hearty sup tonight.  I was unable to to P.O. but as mail, have quit fora while would have got nothing.  Gobed 9.

Part cloudy, N.W.4.  I got up early - house was cold.  I ate little breakfast.  Jacks appetite seems off, too.  Ray came about 7 and worked hard till 8.30 shoveling snow &c.  I sent him to P.O., no mails and to buy paper.  The storm reports are getting worse.  Thousands drowned in Ohio and Indiana and elsewhere.  Terre Haute and nearby towns about as bad as any.  There is little hands and prac(t)ically no mails.  I got today's R.H. by mail carrier   Morty phoned AM asking if I needed anything.- I didn't,.  Said would be over this eve.  I made a bread pudding and some dutch cheese, both pretty good.  Harman calls 5 P.M. for few moments only.  Reports rains have washed fields badly.  Wants his clover seed soon as possible.  I went up town soon after he left to P.O. but no mail.  Return back way slipping in without Gs knowing it.Part cloudy day, stiff NW wind- The sun cut snow good deal.  Think snow 6 inches I slept on couch till midnight to oil and went to bed.

E.  Heavy rain most of night.  My appetite still very poor.  Cook lima beans yest.  They are good but can't eat them.  Get letter from Mrs. West enclosing Express M.O. for 1.00 for rent.  It seems she addressed her letter to Mattoon and letter has been to Dead letter office.  Ray came again as agreed and does the  regular work and will come again Thursday.  I write short letter to Tue AM.  Am about out of coal and keep light fires.  The house pretty chilly both day and night.  Cloudy day light showers AM with northeasterly wind.  I went up town toward night.  No letters bought lemons syrup, cove oysters &c at Grims.  Slept  from 9 PM till near midnight on couch.  Went up to bed waking 3 AM cold.  Nobody called today.  I talked with Geo. SW.2.  I did not sleep till after 3 AM.  Big white frost.  Rhoda came to wash.  Helen Hildreth calls a while AM.  She is  going to a field meet at Decatur.  Mr. Law about same with measles.  His grandson called to see him P.M.  Tue is  getting tired of them think will let them go soon.  Self feel very poorly today with sore face.  Harman calls P.M.  Seems well pleased with situation at farm.  He  is cutting up barnyard  into small lots.  I think good place.   Our last ton of coal lasted just eight days.  Harman called again before going home.   Serius full of gossip.  Says will be in again soon to see about  oats and cloverseed.  He started home after dark with team and and buggy.  Mostly cloudy day.  Light rain 2 P.M. followed by light snow later till dark.  About 1/4 in of snow fell.   My mouth and face seem worse today.  Think Mr. Law getting better slow.  Gobed 10 P  Pay E light bill by mail check 2.25.  720,000 up to last read.

About clear, strong W wind all night.  Cold day with west wind, cloudy and snow flying much of the time and seems to be growing colder.  Girls went to S.S. and after that went down to Hat's where they ate dinner getting home about 1. P.M.  Mrs. Davis was over toward night.  Has been  cold and disagreeable day frozen up solid again.  Go bed 10. PM.

S.3.  The house was colder this morn than have noted this winter.  Ther in setting R. 57.   Something wrong with  furnace or the coal.  Rhoda came about 11 AM and washed done before night.  Phebe cutting  out new brown dress.  Harman phoned AM that would be in with some meat P.M. brought 19 3/4 lb lard 8 1/2 sausage, tender loin, spare rib and beef in all 40 lbs. Pay him check 4.80.  He took out old harness he had left in barn.  Fern was here at night.  The snow went off except north hills.  Mostly clear day with strong southerly.

M.  Learn that Jessie Dunn's baby died last night after long illness.  Tue got a letter from Marie AM.  Hitch up mare 11 AM., first since Sunday.  The scaves (sic)of funeral procesh (sic) on E side.  Tue went down to Jessies A.M.  I got same P.M. after make two trips.  Look for JEMc 5 PM  didn't see him.  Meet Rogers Bennett with Zoll.  Ora was here at night.  She is thinking of going with Phebe next week to Chicago.  Clear AM but clouds up PM. with dashes of rain 5 P.M. and later strong southwind(sic) becoming N.W. before morning.  Gobed 9 P.M.

(sic) N.W. 3. some light showers early in night.  Harman phones that thinks will finish NW tile today.  They plowed yesterday.  Tue goes to funeral P.M.  Jessie Moffets baby.  Helen Ferrish went with her.  Phebe has friends for supper.  Frances, Ora and Fern and Tue made quit a function of it.  Had a roast of Harman's beef which was fine.  Lear of death of Ike Cassell an old settler from way back.  Mostly clear day with high N.W. wind.  It began to grow colder about noon and we are worried at night for fear W W will freeze.  New WC frozen twice this winter.  Go bed 9 P.M.  I spend much of time sorting over old papers and mags.

Precip. mostly Rain, 5. 91 in .90 on 5th .65 on 6th .60 on 10th 1.00 inch on 16th; 1.41 on 20th and, 83 on 22d an inch or two light snow fell but went off at once.  The Prevailing winds N.5 1/3; N.E. 2/3; E. 1 1/3; S.E. 2; S. 10; S.W. 4; W. 1 2/3, and N.W. 6 days.  The ground has hardly been frozen and they have been plowing this week Cloudiness for Mo, 60%.   Corn say 40.  oats 30.  Hogs 7.00  Eggs 25 butter 30 to 40.  The roads have been very bad and are so still  I have not used roads much.  There has been lots of rain and streams are high.

N.1.  heavy white frost. ice 3/8 in tub.  Coldest morn to date and get good fire in furnace by 8 AM.   Harman phones AM.  Ss will finish 30 a piece tomorrow.  had intended  going out but too cold.  Tue  and Muggs busy sewing &c.  Muggs has  party at night Grace, Dora, Hat, Johnston and others - cards.  Tue sells old cook stove and gets new Majestic range which they put up late evening.  Get 1/2 gal a varnish for furnace.  I drove out to Huffmans late P.M.  Clear day light variable winds.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Mostly clear red at sunrise E. 2.  Light white frost.  Tue and Muggs went to church AM.  Muggs got  Sunday paper- Interocean.  Was too late for R.H.  After they left I  drove south to Woodson place returning by Wrightsville about 1 P.M.  the roads are good most of the  trees hold their green leaves especially the oaks, Hickory walnut and some other trees  have shed.  I met but one auto in twelve mile drive today.  Toward night I drove over to Frank Balch's.  Will call to look at work tomorrow.  Mostly clear with moderate S.E. to south winds.  C.O. Rennells has not appeared to finish painting on W.C. and we will get other man.  Gobed 10.30

Part cloudy S.2.  Take quarter R2ps  back to  BPa & Co.  The shortage in coal still continues and they have no coal but Pana.  Order on glass for  coal room window 14x28.  Didn't find strip for W.C. to suit.  Our painter has never appeared.  think he "doped" the paint left as it refuses to dry.  Frank Balch looks at furnace and will clean and put it up tomorrow for two dollars.  Harman and family in town in Surry.  Hitches team in barn.  Mrs. Bell takes 1 1/2 bu pears.  Tue and Maggie to function at  Pres. Church toward night and later.  I drove east after 4 P.M. return 5.30.  Part cloudy with fresh southerly winds.   Clouds W. at sunset.  Quite warm day and in night.  Tue was over at LeRoy's night.  Go bed 8.30 P.M.
