License.  Geo Kellogg finishes oil room and puts up awning in forenoon  Rec.  5 Bbl Atherton from  Freiberg and Rye &  French from lini.  Kellogg finishes "oil" room puts up screen and awning.  Mrs. Rogers helping Tue.  Strong S. wind all day.  Lightning W. at night biz dull  Go bed 11:30

Mostly clear fresh fresh breeze S. Uncle John down to dinner.  Milt Drake up with team, no load.  Pay  John Kink $25.00 which is several dollars more than I owe him.  Trade medium.  Pay Nick wages to date.   Rain a little toward night and gets cooler.  Mostly cloudy P.M.  Gobed midnight.

19.  Sunday.  8 AM.  Ther  55.  ?  59.  =3. 

Clear.  Tue and self start for ranch 10 AM.  left girls and baby home with father.  Ate our dinner N. of house in N. hollow.  After some bark and roots start home about 5 PM.   Began to rain before we got to Hanely's and rained till nearly home.  Thunder good part of P.M.  Having rain at night.  We got pretty damp before getting home.  Gobed 9:30 PM.

Cloudy, wind NW, signs of rain but none fell here. Cooler at night wind getting N.  Hitch up hover PM to deliver C(?) beer.  H.G. paid Miss K.  36.25 on his share of bonus drawing it out of firm money.  Set a dozen tomato plants at night.  Paid up Jackson a/c 20.00 and look at carpet there.  Narrrow gauge pays off. Their men PM.  Gobed 11:30 PM

21.  Tuesday.  8 AM.  Ther,  48.  68.  60.  =  57.

Partly Clear.  Abbott works most of P.M. Cleaning up stable.   Buy 3640  lbs hay of Eley @ 8.50.  Mrs. Rogers washed.  Quit smoking tobacco, Cloudy toward night looked like rain lightning NE  rain with thunder about 11 PM.  Trade fair.  Paid Abbott 25 in full.  Gobed.  11 PM

Light frost.  Miss Kemayer not made any decision as yet. Went down to Depot to see Alex is putting in another set of furniture.  Council met tonight granting license to 6 men including self.  Gobed 10 PM

3.   Friday 

Clear pretty sharp frost ice formed.  Girls went with me today.  6 men making rails and wood.  Went by Blakeman's.  Miss Kemayer figuring on getting.  H.G. down at night says she has decided to move in with Geo Rosebraugh.    Tue and Father ate dinner at H.G.s.

4.   Saturday

Miss Kemayer in tells me she will vacate the room next Wednesday, going in room with Geo Rosebraugh.

Tue still suffering from toothache and head ache- has probably caught cold.

6.  Monday.

  Went down to shop to hire Nick Smith engage him to work at nine dollars per week.  H.G. still helping Latta.  

7. Tuesday

 Fine in woods west of John Handleys - Walkers.  Walker have their farm nearly up.

8.  Wednesday.  

Miss Kemayer moved out in evening after supper.  Helped her some.  We begin cleaning up in the morning walk down with Kate Perrill.

Boys work all day and get about  ready for business  Beer comes and some whiskey.  Drummers plenty.

Part cloudy.  N.3.  Ice 5/8 in.  snow flys most of A.M.  Order ton of coal (nut) from B. Pa &  Co which came 2 P.M.  We needed it badly.  Tue attends Emma Knock funeral P.M. and then went over to Mrs. Curds.~L.D. Norton called signing collector receipt which he had forgotten.  Paul Warman calls leaving horse at shed at night.  I fear will not like new lot of coal.  The house has felt cold all day.  Part clear day snow flying much of day.  License was voted down in Mattoon and a large portion of state yesterday  Gob 8 P.M.

9.  Thursday.  6 AM.  Ther.  22.  48.  36.  =  35 1/3

Clear. N.W.2. wh. fr. ice 1/2 in.  Billy Hatton came but didn't expect him.  He works m(?) if day in bottom cleaning up in bottom:  cutting up fallen willows.  Worked a while at wood pile later. and before quitting carries up coal for night.  The new coal does not show up well.  John S. Parker calls an hour or two P.M.  Since Mrs. P. died he is batching.  Bill will come in morn but too wet to spade garden, quits at 5 now. ~  Mrs. Will Stoddert called P.M.  Most clear day light N.W. wind.  Later.  Tue went to town.  The Morties were over 7.30 to 9.30 P gobed 9.30 P.

Clear or nearly so.  light white frost.  H.G. thinks there is not doubt about license this year.  I start to timber at 9.30 taking two bags orchard  and blue grass seed.  Get  Steve Decker to  sow it on ground we have cleaned up.  The other boys work at burning off N. of middle hallow.  found two gaps down in my fence.  Got home at 8 P.M. pretty tired.  Kink and Warren were hauling out ties.  Go bed 9.30 P.M.  Warm with S. wind.  Very dry .  Had good deal of trouble with the fires today clouds up at night and sprinkle rain.

Cloudy tart at 9 AM.  Wind S. sp rain on way   Boys cutting on ridge making wood fence.  O.D. and others worked P.M.  burning brush and helping hang gate near house.  All the cleaned ground is now seeded.  Steve finished sowing the S.W. corner this  AM.  The enclosed field  sown last winter is up nicely but needs rain.  The whole county is suffering from drouth.  Buckeye leaving out.  An occasional peach blossom open - the trees are very full.  Service berry in full bloom.  River getting pretty well down.  Got home at 8 PM.  Gobed 10.45 PM.-

17.  Friday.  6 AM.  Ther.  56.  50.  56.  = 54.

Cloudy. S.3.  Raining.  It began in the night cause in showers.  Miller came and insisted on painting. Went to work on porch ceiling and quit.   We went to Loxa to see about some repairs on house getting back after noon.    Is going away tomorrow can't work till Tuesday.  I didn't hitch up today for first time in good while. Tue to R.C. PM.  Bill Decker and I Shafer  call  talking  sawmill.  I didn't do it.  Meet of teachers at Normal today.  The street cars crowded much of the time about 1600 registered.  Cloudy day wind becoming N. and colder.  Gobed 8.20 PM.

Clear.  There was strong SW wind, blowing all night.  The election was very quiet  about 800 votes being polled.  License was beaten by 63 maj.    Maxwell, Dem.  in 4th elected by 26 .  White , Rep. in 1st 26,  Bishop  Rep. 2nd 12, D. Dowling Rep. 3rd 19.  The liquor men did not organize.   Temperance folks worked and have been doing so all the spring.  Myers worked half day.  Tue took up kitchen carpet.  E. Drunway and other drummers in town.  Warm day change to cooler about 5 P.M.  Kirk and R brought up ties.  Pay them order 800.  Gobed 10.30 P.M.

  Clear, strong S.W. wind getting into W.   and finally N.W. in night.  Warm and dry day.  There was an alarm of fire in morning and another at night.  The latter was for Ron Davis house which burned down.  Got an early dinner and drove out to Uncle John's about 2 P.M.  Staying until nearly night.  The roads are pretty good but rough in places.  Uncle John gave us a lot of butter and eggs.  Geo. Munroe was buried today, he died yesterday morning.  Learn that some parties are putting up a sawmill N. of town on Dickus land.  Cooler at night.  Had first asparagus this year today from garden.  Gobed 9.30

Mostly cloudy wind N.E. blowing strong most of night.  The alarm of fire last night was Rose Davis house.  Myers came at 7.15 and put in one of his full days which are generally short about a half hour.    The plants came from Starr Harrison and expect trees by freight in a day or two.  Much politics talked on street today.  Opinions differ good deal as to chance for license.  Myers split Mrs. L.'s wood today and spaded rest of garden.  Clear or nearly so.  Gobed 9.30

Clear.  N.8.  White Frost.  No ice.  Ray did not come as expected and had to carry up coal ourselves.  Look over some old papers &c. A.M.  Tue went over plantsthing(sic) me what she didn't want me to do.  I got my mare 10 A.M.  but did not use her till after dinner. 1.30 P.M.   start out to settle with some of my  creditors.  Mare too foxy so don't drive near the depot.  Met Al Latta cor Div. and Madison where he has rooms.  I drove out by fairground up by John R. Hills to town there west to  Popham road then south to R.R. and home.  Most of the farmers up that way are clearing out their pastures especially buck brush.   Note  Dr. Pattons, Sodderts and Popham's.  They have cut most of trees and brush and plowed the ground.  We get another letter from tenant Oakley at Loxa needing repairs &c.  on house.  Order balehay (sic) bu oats from I.B.M. P.M.  Have had mare at Nickles service last Thursday night.  Gob 8.30

Clear and  pleasant day.  Driving round 4th ward in forenoon trying to connect up hold list.    Good many in town P.M.  Bert called while eating dinner.  Pay Rutherford 1.25 PM.  W. Decker 9.45 for wood cut @ 60.  Still owe him 6.00 (?) having cut 40 3/4 cord.  Comer in wants me to come down and divide lumber.  The "Citizens" convention in 1st. ward nominate W.H. French to run against M. White Rep.   Politics talked a good deal on streets today.  Went up to French Davis office at night to take poll book.  Settle with Bill Meyers for ham bought last week.  Meyers says he will work Monday.  Talk for license a good deal mixed .  Go bed 10 PM.

Clear.  Light white frost,  the first.  Send sample cocoons to Washington for Ruth.  Shep Hunt agrees to haul wood from south end on shares.  Dr. Will Hall says he is going to start west in a week or two .  John Huffman looks over some a/c and gives views on license.   Most of sawmill gang up in P.M. say have city bill of 10,000 ft about  out.  Buy two  bushels  peaches at McConnels.  Mostly clear day.  Go bed  9.30 PM

Part cloudy S.W.3.  The rain last night measured one inch.  None fell after 9 P.m.  I was born seventy years ago today.  I have received a straw hat and a pocket knife.  I got the paper.  Tue and Phebe went to church.  I drove E to timber getting home about noon.  Toward night drive via J.B. Hills to town line returning by Watson's.  Dirt roads quite muddy.  Think more rain north.  I call at Emmetts.  Will work for me tomorrow.  Has lost my spade fork.  Saw Nick in passing.   Part cloudy day moderate W. wind, becoming light southerly at night.  Mrs. Knock here till 9 P.M.  Gobed 10.30

Thursday,  6.30 AM  Ther  60.  80.  64

Cloudy, was clear early.  Got a baquet  for breakfast this being my 45 birthday.  Buy 5 1/2 yards matting to put in hall, cr. at Chambers $1.92.  School committee go to Chicago  to see about new school house.  Delia concludes to quit  Saturday.  Council meet tonight, but did not act on the pitch for license.  Put in a/c against City for lumber to date $14.50.  Take a lot more silkworms up town.  They don't seem to be doing well.  Mostly clear day with N.W. wind.  Got letter from Mary Sayre mostly about Aunt C. & Geo.* Go bed 10 P.M.  Father** and self went after hedges to Anderson's.

*Aunt Charity and Uncle George Wade- Charity was my Gr-gr-grandmother's sister.  This couple was very dear to Charles and Keturah.

Cloudy, N.2.  Tue and I drove out to cemetery 10 AM taking a few flowers which we distributed among the graves.  Flowers are not plentiful this year.  Big crowd at cemetery.  We drove out to  Helens getting home before noon getting some butter and eggs of Helen.  We did not go out in P.M.  Late I drove out by Latta's returning by Helen's.  They have put in a temporary bridge over Cassell Creek near Big 4 RR preliminary to building new cement bridge.  Tue over to Brooks at night.  Part clear day.  Moderate N to variable winds.  Go bed 10.

Cloudy and light rain.  Thunder shown in the night.  Start for timber about 9 AM.  Roads very muddy part of the way.  Got to Milt's after 11oc. after he got his dinner we drove up to Hanleys.  He gave his consent for us to drive with lumber through his place.  Left Milt at Handley ford and got home about ?PM. quite a shower fell while coming home.  Kate Davis here to supper.  Find that ants have been destroying a good many of my worms.  A little coal oil put near their track seems to stop them.  Went up to P. McGurtys place after supper to consult with other fellows about license on a vote on license which will (?) at council meeting Thursday night.  Go bed 10 PM.  Got osage from Handley's hedge.
