26.  Thursday.  5 AM  Ther  78.97.  80.

Mostly clear day with very little wind and more sultry than yesterday.    J.B McComas looks at logs and buys them at 3.50 to take them tomorrow.  Nick caught a cecropia at night - male - a female we had has laid about  200 eggs and died.  Riley Easton brought up Welches lumber.  Uncle John in P.M. looking for man to cut wheat.  A little sign of rain today.  Tue and children slept on floor in front room self up stairs 11 PM.

27  Friday.  4 AM.  Ther 75  98  80

Clear,  no wind.  McComas came for logs.  they only averaged about 75 lbs.  Tue picked berries in morning.  Dickinson washed  buggy &c  Comer in town AM.  Too hot for anything,  Light thunder showers in NE.  Lightning at night.  Steve Douglas adjudged insane and went to asylum.  Pay J A Weaver and Art Glass Co   about the hottest night  go bed 10.30 PM.  

28.  Saturday.  4.30 AM.  Ther  77.  98.  80  = 85
Mostly clear.  Tue picks berries AM.  Another hot day.  everybody complaining of heat.  Not very large crowd in town for Saturday.  Trade fair.  Most of  gang up from timber and paid off.  Did not see Comer, he left his book at store.  Uncle John in town looking for me n to cut wheat.  Warren Decker  up with load of lumber.  He refuses to haul up hogs or haul my hogs down.  Sheridan Ashby  died today having been sick two or three weeks.  Cloudy with S.Westerly wind.  Gobed up stairs at midnight - -

Clear.  Southwesterly wind.  Girls went to S.S.  Buddie [Marie] to Christian Church with  Mary Davis.  They all went riding with Dr. Hall toward night.  this has been one of the warmest days, thunder and appearance of rain  S. P.M.  Tue and self pick a few berries at night.  Tue did not go to church.  Go bed 11 P.M. upstairs

Part cloudy.  Mrs. Rogers washes.  Heavy  shower 930 to 10.30 AM. with much thunder.  Send DWRs 9 Bbl to  Samuels.  Baseball game today.  Trade fair.  Self about sick.  Gobed 10.30 PM~~

Cloudy apparently general rain / AM till 5 AM or 6 AM.  Went down after Jubal didn't  find him; hunt up Jo Crail  They both came P.M.  Jube  mowed front yard.  Jo worked at Crossing.  50 c each.  Maggie crowd had function here at night~~ keep self awake  till midnight.  I get fine lot of Pleurotus ostreatus  down at Geo Waters which didn't have for supper.  The rain last night was the heaviest we have had this summer.  Lightning at night with rain later in night  Gobed 9 PM.

28.  Friday.  5.30 AM.  Ther  74.  95.  74.  =  81

Clear SW wind.  Went up town before breakfast got some ham.  Mrs. Bell has been milking since Monday.  Weeds in pasture are cutting yield of milk.  there was quite heavy shower after midnight last night and another 4 - 5 P.M.  Hen [Henry Hildreth] and Ora drove into shed out of rain but didnt stay long.  Farmers say no plowing this week.   I drove  out S.W. getting two boxes of Russula viescens not much good and didn't cook them.  Sultry Day.  S.W. wind.  Buy rubber storm apron W. & T. 1.00 Cr.  Talk a while with Geo Brown north of P.O.   go bed 9 P.M.

Clear.  N. wind.  No rain last night but thundered in west toward morning.  I went up to  Pinnells for meat before breakfast  Buy chicken, 15 c.  per lb. have been 17 c. alive.  Pay interest at 2d Natl.  $175.00 Called at State Bk to settle, say call Monday.  Get Jubal to hoe garden and take home Mrs. Walkers chair AM.  pd. Jubal 25. c.  Settle with Crail work done Thursday 50 cts.  Speak to C. about Talbot boy says will cut it for me.  Jo Courtney  thinks he will handle it on shares.  Take Marie P.M. to take home dishes used Thursday night &c.  They are counting on big celebration here on July 4.  I suffer much  from the heat today.  Drive with Tue after supper to get chicken &c.  Clear day with west wind very sultry  Gobed 10 P.M.

Clear , southwest wind  Would have gone down to Simon's but promise to hot.  Drive down to Woodson place looking for fungi.  Saw none  This seems strange.  Same gypsies camp down by school house south that Lucus out near Gaines.*  Mrs. Knox stays to dinner and supper.  She is staying at Mrs. Purtills.  Too warm for me to move round much Southerly wind and clear all day.  Gobed.  10 P.M.

Clean  S. wind Warren and Simons came while we were eating breakfast with 16 shoats which we turn in the barn yard.  They take a load of corn back starting about noon.  Pay Heddin for  48 bu corn bought yesterday.  Pay off all the gang I could today.  Pay Dave Masters for 4 loads of corn bought last winter 100 bu 23.60.  Have decided to get out of the hog business (?)  and will sell all I have except  a sow or two and some pigs.  One of the hottest days we have had not much of a crowd in town but trade fair.  Jack Handly took down a load of tile for me for well.  Cal Noble says he will have it in a week or ten days.  Pentacost band are still  in town and were around this AM soliciting donations for building a church  Mostly clear day.  go bed  11.30 PM

Clear with S.W. wind.  Have written nothing in this book for over a week and there is some guess work about this record since last Sunday.  I write it up today.  Heavy thunder shower between 4 and 5 P.M.  Hogs brought up yesterday tearing the barnyard all to pieces.  Tue went to church AM. -- go bed 10 P.M.

Mostly cloudy.  Dickenson made hog pen and patched up fence in bottom working all day.  Yesterday and today are the two hottest days so far this season.  Farmers not in town  much.  Fair corn weather and prospects good  Wheat will not amount to much here.  Intended to go to ranch yesterday nut had to fix hog pen.  Mrs. R. washed and ironed  Gobed 10 30 PM

Start for ranch 5 AM. getting there before 7.  Boys cutting logs on ridges next to river.  Went to house for dinner  Cut up on levels P.M.  Heat very oppressive.  Milt not running and no one at work there  Mostly clear day with W wind  Go bed 9.30

Mostly clear boys begin cutting Sprouts in east pasture  Start for home at 9 AM.  Stop at mill and decide  to go back to dinner  Send Rile and John down to mill P.M. to saw off and pile some cull lumber.  Start home agin at 1 P.M.  getting there about 4.   Mrs Perrill and Kate there   We have cut to date 547 logs measuring 58647 ft.  Comer has sawed to date 10 AM 429 logs measuring 48070 ft. leaving still in woods 118 logs containing  10,607 ft. some few of them are useless when crooked or rotten.  Pay Deckmen 1.00 of 1.45 owing him for work  Very hot and oppressive  Gobed  10.30 P.M.  Rile Easton broke down with load of lumber today.

Mostly cloudy SE wind.  Thunder and lightning all night with light showers, apparently heavy rains north last night.   Tue was up several times in night.  Self didn't sleep much.  Get  Jo Crail to lay tile for cross on Fifth St. which he does before noon Pd 50c  Mrs.  Smith works all day wash iron &c.  Colby sends more  Pleurotus mushrooms.  Thunder showers with little rain till nearly noon and also toward night.  I drove out to Gaines P.M.  Jo plowing SW field.  Corn looks fine and growing very fast.  They had very heavy rains a few miles north last night.  River water thick with mud.  Council have resolved to move all buildings back from St line.  Sultry day.  S.W. wind  Gobed 9.30 P.M._ _ _

22.  Saturday. 5.30 AM.  Ther  65.  93.  79. =79.
Mostly cloudy southerly wind. Sprinkle rain in night Thunder north this morning  Mike Handley calls to work with team but cant use him today.  Had some P.ostreatus [ http://botit.botany.wisc.edu/toms_fungi/oct98.html ]   from Colby for breakfast which were very good.  John Simons in town but did not bring wood.  Set trap in barn and caught big rat.  Get bridle repaired at Shoemakers  P.M.  Garrison pays rent to July 14 50.00 and gives indemnifying bond June 6th  Pay W.F. Jenkins (K.G. check) 150.00 still owe her forty or fifty dollars.  Thunder showers around with light sprinkles here several times during the day.  the warmest day this season so far,  variable wind strong from S.W. and W. AM.  Mrs. Bell milked tonight first time.  Sharp and continued lightning at night north.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Mostly clear northerly wind.  Heavy rain with much thunder in night, bginning about 10 P.M. continuing most of night from north.  Buy meat Pinnells.  Drive to river on Westfield road.  River pretty high and very muddy Roads somewhat muddy but not deep.  Ferd here to dinner and supper.  I sort out lot of Records &c in old house after dinner. Did intend going out to Gaines but too hot.   Got straw hat at Winter AM. Cr. 25.  Mostly clear day and sultry  Variable wind  No rain here today but thunder and lightning in night.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Partly cloudy much thunder and lightning N and NW toward morning.  Mrs. Smith and Mother came to wash P.M.  Deposit Garrison check for 50.00 at 2d.  Start out to Gaines 2 P.M.  Joe plowing S.E. piece.  Leave word at home that will stay all night and did so.  Corn along road looking well and mine as good as any.  Band of movers (gypsies)? camped along road west of gate.  Very sultry today and I suffer much from heat.  went to bed 9 P.M.

Mostly clear The storm last night did not extend east of Loxa.  Lask at Meadow and think much of it good, will cut it  Hannah Talbot over to borrow tub &C.  Mr & Mrs. G drove Queen to Mattoon Sunday.  Jo got out to work at 5 AM this morn.  Shirley somewhat later.  I intended to drive through to Loxa but didnt.  Wind last night blew big tree down in pasture.  Drive down to it.  Drove down road to NW corner and look at Shirleys corn.  Gypsie camp opposite place.  Got home 9 A.M.  This has warmest day to date.  99 2.30 P.M.  Courtney boy rode to town with me.

19.  Tuesday.  4.30 AM.  Ther.  74. 94.  78.  =  82.

Mostly clear. S.1.  Tue and I start to Loxa 6.29 A.M.  going S. road.   Leaving Buddy and Chas. in bed.  Stop at Jones'.   Tue collecting his rent and at Gaines' where she saw the two babies and there at Mrs. Shirleys.  Mrs. S. is feeling poorly and has  changed much.  We drove up through the place going over to west side and through all cloverfields.  Do not think there is much seed in any of it and told Cox same when got to place.   Cox has visitors.  We did not see Harman and it was so warm we soon left for home.  The corn does not promise any more than at last visit.   Half a crop is big estimate.  We got home about 11 A.M. after very hot drive.  Shirleys digging well near their house.  Cox says they have plenty water at farm.  Can see nothing of clover sown with oats.   B.C. looks well.  Thunder much P.M. and mostly cloudy.  Sprinkle rain.  Apparently heavy rains S.  Find lot of supposed lepiota Granulosus  in garden.  I did not drive any more after getting home from Loxa.  Old mare seems to feel downsy (sic)she is worse to drive than I ever knew her to be.  Tue and Buddy over on 4th street at night.  Later they go up town.  This the first day of Coles Co. fair.  Admish is 50c. this year as it was last.  Gobed 8.30

Clear.  E.1 Walter came before we got up.  He has a short vacation.  Rhoda came to wash.  She irons most of P.M.  I drove up town 10.A.M. soon returning.  The heat very oppressive.  Mostly clear AM but clouding up P.M. with much thunder and heavy showers around .62 in. fell here between  5 and 6 P.M.  Must have been immense rain few miles south.  None of attended the fair.  Slightly cooler at night.  Go bed 9 P

Light fog. W.2.  Walter took Chas. to fair AM.  I drove up town for cream.  There are several bands of gypsies in town I met them on 4th St.  Later drove over to see Bill Hatton but didn't  met(sic) Boden.  Tue and Buddy up town P.M. leaving me with Charles.  Write Leader Engine Co. for catalogue of tractors.  Part cloudy AM but mostly overcast P.M.  Light shower 11 A.M. heavier showers late P.M. all for today, .34 in.  I felt the heat bad as ever today;  Skinner comes after I go bed, and stays the night.  He has been hurt in Chicago and has crutches.  Gobed 9.30

Clear.  We started for  Berts before 9 AM leaving father alone at home.  Stayed til 5 P.M.     (/0 hitch and  several of his children were there.  Found Ma not so well as last time we saw her.  Got home before 7 P.M.  Has been pleasant day  mostly clear.  The roads are good and not dusty.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Cloudy and raining since two or three o'clock.  Intended to  to make early start for timber but for the rain.  Put handle in another ax.  Phebe had tooth ache all night and today.  Mamie Lang here all day.  Bims call toward night and looked at swelling on calf's flank.  Kate Davis got home today.  Mrs. E. has been pretty sick for several days.  Turie decides to let them have qt. of milk a day.  I mowed in yard hour or two P.M.  Went up town at night.  Had talk with Sam Litch about  sheep.  Go bed 9 P.M.  Wind E.

Cloudy and raining began after midnight.  Phebe cried all night with toothache.    Mrs. Dickenson  comes to wash finishing at 3 P.M.  Dressler & (?) call to look at bar furniture and offer 325.00 for it which I refuse.  Phebe feeling very badley all day, face swells up mostly cloudy day, wind N. roads said to be muddy.  Gobed 7 P.M.
