2.  Thursday

Light frost.  Miss Kemayer not made any decision as yet. Went down to Depot to see Alex is putting in another set of furniture.  Council met tonight granting license to 6 men including self.  Gobed 10 PM

3.   Friday 

Clear pretty sharp frost ice formed.  Girls went with me today.  6 men making rails and wood.  Went by Blakeman's.  Miss Kemayer figuring on getting.  H.G. down at night says she has decided to move in with Geo Rosebraugh.    Tue and Father ate dinner at H.G.s.

4.   Saturday

Miss Kemayer in tells me she will vacate the room next Wednesday, going in room with Geo Rosebraugh.

5.  Sunday

Tue still suffering from toothache and head ache- has probably caught cold.

6.  Monday.

  Went down to shop to hire Nick Smith engage him to work at nine dollars per week.  H.G. still helping Latta.  

7. Tuesday

 Fine in woods west of John Handleys - Walkers.  Walker have their farm nearly up.

8.  Wednesday.  

Miss Kemayer moved out in evening after supper.  Helped her some.  We begin cleaning up in the morning walk down with Kate Perrill.

Boys work all day and get about  ready for business  Beer comes and some whiskey.  Drummers plenty.

Clear.  Strong S.W. wind turns to N.W. and grows colder before 8 oc. AM.  Abbott and self went after cow at Uncle John's.  She  has a black female calf five days.  The gang were all up today and drained my a/c.  R. Decker wants south house but Kink proposes to keep it a while yet.  Miss Kemayer has not decided to get out of my room and I am afraid she won't do so soon enough for me.  Abbot quit at noon pay him in full for two days work.  Clear day with violent N.W. wind no signs of rain.  The drouth is becoming serious matter.  Crab apple and white haw blooming.   10 PM.

Clear  nearly frost.  Decide not to go to timber as intended W. wind, girls did not go to S. School.  After dinner Tue and I drove down toward Kickapoo round by Atkins and up river road.  Cold wind Tue caught cold in her teeth.  Clouds up toward night  Does not look much like rain more like snow.  Gobed 10 PM

Mostly cloudy but clears off.  Saw Miss Kemayer this AM. she refuses to get out of my room until her lease expires.  Would try to get her out for  180.00  H.G. a & Hat were down in morning.  Jack Jefferies tells me can buy the Perkins  grocery building  consult H.G.  rec.  Draft for ties from White 196.00 which deposit.  Pay up several small bills around town.  Latta is moving in his bar furniture today.  Leavitt and Davis brought in 37 ties.  I drove to Rogers with washing and went down 4 tie (?)  Sprinkle rain about  8 P.M.  Gobed 11 PM.

Cloudy.  H.G. advises me to accept Miss K's offer and pay her 180.00 for getting out of room.  I started for timber about 10.30  Men making rails and hauling fence.  Milt rode home with me.  Tue's face very bad this AM.  She had three teeth extracted this afternoon.  Had Mrs. Wentz and two D(?) friends to dinner  There was a general celebration today being centurial Anniversary of Washington's inauguration.  Roads good, river low.  Very dry.  Trees all leafing out.  Jo Handley finished planting corn today.  Part cloudy day N W wind grows warmer AM  colder PM.  gobed 11 P.M.

Light frost.  Clear.  The thermometer was 34 very early but stood at about 40 at 7 AM.  H.G. and self buy Stakey building near Meat Market paying 550.00.  I gave note  6 mo for my share.  Miss Keymayer offers to get out of room for $151.25 Alvey rented his room to restaurant this AM making another hitch in our arrangements    Stanberry suit comes up and is continued.  Milt Drake was up as Witness and went back P.M. with Kink.  Cold and mostly cloudy day 11 PM

Clear or  hazy S.3.  Tue cleaning  and sweeping our room by self.  I phone J.E.M. early getting 4 PM. same.  License expires at Mattoon May 7th  C.W. Bill leveling up N. opera house.  Children are running over us and I put up some notices to "Keepout" (sic). Tue brings big rug downstairs and takes it back.  Much cloudy P.M.  with fierce Southwind.  Self feeling unusually poorly.  I can't perceive but that I get worse all time.  Was barely able to hitch up this morn.  I went up to Brown's at Hotel getting sh &  hair cut first time for many weeks.  The Tampico incident is closed or will be soon as Huerta salutes flag which he may do soon.  Tue at request of Mrs. G. went over there for evening getting home 9 oc.  The city has passed a new water ordinance and expect large revenue from W. US. It will raise cost of our some.  Part cloudy day with great wind from S.W. lightning 8 P.M. and later after 9 to  11 P.M. light Thunder showers.  The wind continued the night but no rain after midnight. gobed 9 P

Most cloudy.  W.5.  Seems to be growing colder.  Get fire in furnace 9 AM.  Tue goes church AM.  Had thought to drive good ways today but too cold A.M.  Ther. falls all P.M. with light rain say 5 P.M. only a trace.  Mort and Kate were here late P.M. until after 7 when Tue went to church  I decide not to hitch up - too cold and windy.  Mostly cloudy day and night.  Strong west and NW winds  Gobed 10 P.M.

Mostly cloudy.  N.3.  Tue killed her while here.  She wrote Buddy AM.  Send Couriers to each of the girls.  Tue  went down to see Ollie P.M.  I hitch up  late P.M.  The mare more vicious than ever saw her : broke  bridle which I tie it up and drive out by cemetery and home by south road by 5.30.  Tue spent evening at Mrs. Brooks' getting home 9  Go bed. 9.30

Part clear smoky.  Mostly clear day, clouds up and rains just a little at about sunset.  See Miss Kemayor says she can't find room to move into.  Davis Brown drummer in town, also other drummers very numerous.  Get everything ready to start for woods early tomorrow morning.  Buy a pair of shoes at Mitchell  on Cr. 5.50.  Tue not feeling very well.  Nor self.  Quit chewing tobacco yesterday smoking some.  Have short talk with H.G. about business.  Buy meat and some garden seeds at Mitchell's at night.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Cloudy N.w. last night and both th and lightning in night rain about 7 AM.  Nice shower.  More rain during day and at night.  got letter from Mr. Hymen saying had sent us some samples.  Maggie did not go to school.  Hat was up in P.M.  I nailed strips on top of barnyard fence to keep chickens in.  One of Tue's hens died a day or two ago.  Mrs. Dickenson ironed today - took washing home.  Cloudy all day, wind from S. to west.  Tue feeling badly.  Gobed 10 PM.

Cloudy and damp, rained some in night.  Card from WH White saying would receive ties next  Tuesday.  Arrange to down to timber tomorrow.  Milt up town gave him two old chains and old stovepipe.  School election- somewhat exciting- elect Walter Briggs and TJ Murch.  Cleared off, pleasant day.  10 PM.

Part cloudy, S.3.  the continues taking "Colche Sal" and  thinks it helps her.  Bill  came at 7 A and went to work.  Took out ashes.  Takes kindling to cellar; clears off garden place where old house stood.  Helped me hitch up.  I intended  going to Loxa but light rain early stops me.  Bill quit about 1.30 on account of the rain.  Put up mare late.  It rained all PM.  Learn that Frank Alexander and Emma Knock are dead.  Both have been sick a long time.  Tue at Grove's at night til late  Gob 9.30

Cloudy N.E. 3  It rained all night.  Meas. 7 AM (1.01) in. and rain continues from N.E.  Have to warm up house AM although rather short on fuel.  Bill H. called AM and Pay him up to date check 1.60.  Grows colder A.M.  Ther. falling to 40.  It quit raining about 2 PM.  Tue went to Aid Society meet also to vote.  I went up  to vote at 3 PM.   We are so near out of  coal we don't keep hous(sic) very warm and decide to order load in morn.  Cloudy with rain all day till about 2 P.M.  Strong northerly wind.  Gobed 9

Clear N. wind hard frost ice forming over 1/4 in thick in open air.  Abbott came and spaded east end of raspberry  patch.  Uncle John in P.M. he sold the white cow for 26.00 and gave the money to Tue.  Deposit same to her a/c.  Miss K. paid her rent does not like  counter I got for her.  Rep. City Convention today clear cool N. wind gobed 10 PM  Got new pair pants at Winters 7,oo.

Clear Easterly wind.  After dinner at 2.30 went out  to Uncle John's.  Found Snider there after a horse which was just what I was figuring on~ didn't mention it though.  got home after sunset getting very dry  roads good still  some what rough grass not growing much. Uncle John sold the white cow to Dorsch, am feeding her til Monday.  He said he had another cow we could have soon.  gobed 10 PM  clear day

Cloudy Misty ` wind N.E. was at Knocks shop AM & PM.  Tommy says will build one chicken fence tomorrow if pleasant.  Try to  borrow counter for Miss Kemayer, without success.  clears off PM. wind W.  Girls went to school, last week was vacation.  Troutman drummer in town.  saw lot of posts & c for wood toward  night girls spend evening at Mrs. Davis.  Tue feeling badly cough not so bad as usual.  Gobed 9.30 PM

Clear, wind W.  Tommy not feeling well enough  to  work at fence.  Electors day - township.  big vote over 1,000.  Dem. ticket all elected except  L. Dunbar Justice.  I accidentally let cow out about noon and hunted for her all PM  got somebody else's cow.  Uncle John down to dinner.  Think they some chance of getting a team of him.  Milt went with me  to find cow.  Get ready so as to start  for Diona early tomorrow.  T(?) sp. of rain after dark.  Mrs.  D & children over at night.  9.30

Cloudy with strong N. wind.  Milt didn't come early and decide not to go.  He went to D alone   Tommy works at fence an hour or two forenoon, Made rake.Abbott works P.M. spading and scatters ashes in front.  Tue went over to Mrs. Knocks a while PM.  John Kink calls PM.  Pay him 5.00.  Mostly cloudy day with strong NW wind.  Abbot will help me tomorrow.  Hugh Perrill  is home on visit.  Gobed 9.30 PM~

Clear.  White frost.  Tom Knock and Abbot work most of day on chicken fence getting nearly  done.  Tue feeling better.  Loan H.G. small c.c. saw.  Borrow counter for Miss K.  Rent due today, but she can't pay till Saturday.  Speak to Jay about  getting money to move ties.  Pleasant day Northerly wind, partly clear.  Go bed  Go bed 10.30 PM.

Tommy finishes fence time - 1 1/2 days.  Got two men and moved counter from Hinald office.  Abbot sawed wood AM.  After dinner we went out to Uncle John's and got the white cow.   She has been there since Tuesday.  Uncle John gave me a jar of lard.  Abbott put wood in shed after getting back.  Pleasant Day wind variable getting in N. P.M. and growing much colder  Ther fell 12 deg in 3 hours.  City R . convention didn't go.  10 PM.

Fair.  Wind S.W.  Suit up get some oysters for dinner.  H.G.  called in afternoon to talk  about  sawmill.  Think Strickland late but place.   Maggie and Phebe up to Davis toward night and to church at night.  Tue still complains of neuralgia  in head and face.  Gobed 9.30 PM

Mostly  cloudy , wind south.  Abbott sawed up half cord of wood for me and put it in the woodhouse.  H.G. was here in the morning.  P.M.  I walked out to look at Strickland lots round by depot and down  to ties.  Maggie and Phebe went to school in morning but remained at home in afternoon.  Mrs. Truman paid me for a cord of wood.  Miss Kemayor pays rent for Jany.  there was an alarm of fire about 4 P.M.  Gallagher's old shop which was soon put out.  Another at night which proved to be John Wentz old stable, it was said two horses were burned in it.  Pleasant day with heavy wind from S. very gradually to west and growing at night.  this kind of weather will soon dry the roads.  Gobed 10 PM.

Cloudy wind NW snow flying and say half inch on ground.  Help Tue make a batch of cakes.  Hat was here in afternoon.  snow flurie  all day but it  hardly covers the ground.    Fresh N.W. wind.  went up town at night for meat and pills.  Don't feel very well.  This has been the coldest day this winter.  Gobed 9.30

Clear wind about North.  This is the coldest day since last Feb. 27 when ther was -2.  Sam Leitch died this morning.  Had not been sick long.  H.G. down AM to talk about sawmill.  Pill I took last night makes me about sick all day, didn't go up town.  Tue has  toothache bad in afternoon.  clear and pleasant gobed 8.30

Clear wind S.W.  Father caught a bad cold.  Went up town for meat and to deposit rent check.  Maggie not well and stayed home from school.   There was none in P.M. a/c of Sam Leithch  funeral.  Repair girls doll today.  Mostly clear AM cloudy PM high S. wind all day.  Go bed, 9 PM.  Wrote Strickland asking price of lots S of Park Haute.

Mostly cloudy, wind light westerly, about an inch of light snow on ground.  Wrote for Burpee's Farm annual.  Mrs. Perrill called about noon  Uncle John was down to dinner.  Tue went down to Hat's in afternoon.  Rutherford is up from timber and draws 6.00.  Kink has made 50 more ties.  the ties White paid me for last week are not mine as none have been hauled up.    Fresh Westerly wind  most of day, snow mostly melts.  Gobed 9.30 PM.

Uncle John was in to dinner.   Compute interest on a note for him.  Mrs. Eastin was over P.M.  Kate and Edna Myers were over at night.  Maggie and Phebe spend evening over at Davis'  Doc D came down home with me, gave him bottle of sherry.  Pleasant day N.W. wind  Gobed 10 P.M.

Cloudy.  N.W. 1. fog.  I feel poorly.  Drive down to see Ad Miller finding him west of Normal.  Says get lime &c to Loxa and he will fix flue.  No fungi appearing.  Mort begins after dinner repairing front porch.  Watch him til 3 oc. when drive to Dicewood.  Nothing there doing.  I get home 5.30 Helen H. gets here about 6.  Mort had made a fluke in the posts.  Most clear day.  S2.  Gobed 9

Part Cloudy.  Mort worked alll day  day at porch but nowhere near done.  Harman says has plowed 17  A to date,Phones that  will begin cutting B.C. afternoon.  Bert Bennett gang is cutting it.  I  drove over to Hatton's Am. but not at home.  Tue worrying about H.H.  Jo Watkins rode  out a piece with me on way home.   He lives down near "Slab".  Shave self late P.M.  Part cloudy day.  South to westerly moderate winds.  Gobed 9P

Min.40 on 22d.  Rain on 10 days 2.92 - .60 on 11th 1.51 on 15th and .43 on 17th other days light or only trace  Cloudiness 41 per ct.: Winds - N.4; NE 5 1/3 - E 4 1/3 - SE 21/3 S 8 1/3~ SW 1 2/3 W 1 1/3  and NW 2 2/3 days.  Rain about middle of month broke the long drouth but too late to help corn much  It has started pasture wheat and weeds.  Corn at stores 80 Eggs 30  Butter 35. Oats 50.  all kinds of meat am high.  Steak beef or pork costs 20 to 25.  There was a touch of frost in places on 22nd.  Saw it at farm but not in town.

Clear.  Start for timber with girls at 9 AM.  Help them gather hazelnuts tell noon but over to S. side after dinner.  Got price lists of seed from A. Dickenson Co. and Robert Seed Co.  We answer to letters written several days ago.   Four men at work today on middle ridge.  Tue and father put up kitchen stove today.  We get home at 6.30 pretty tired.  W. Decker says he will begin Monday to haul out wood rails &c from ground now cleared.  Have not yet decided not to put  in wheat.  Gobed 10 PM

Clear.  Girls got to S.S. and church.  Stormy S.W. wind gust.  Have (?) light frost.  Pleasant day.  Miss Kemayer  down toward night to say that one of the front windows was broken last night.  Go bed 9 P.M.

Cloudy and sprinkle rain before 7 AM.  Start for timber with John Abbot about 9 oc.  He worked while there at sawing paling.  Very heavy shower came up from NE just as we were going to start home.  Road very muddy, but little rain up town.  Very warm day got home at about 8.30  Gobed 10 PM

Partly cloudy.  Abbott comes before 7 AM to saw wood.  Learn that Wes Caylor died last Friday ago.  had been sick some time.  Got Tom Reeder to haul load of old lumber  down for wood.  Tue, self and children went out to Uncle John's just before noon and stayed all day very uncomfortable.  One of the warmest  days we have had.  Got home about dark.  Sprinkle rain on road home.  Baby may very well has caught cold.  Uncle John not very well.  Says we can have a cow with young calf.  He has fine colt which think, will lose.  Gobed  10 PM.

Partly cloudy.  Tue puts up some green corn and pie plant.  Some signs of  rain showers round.  Warren Decker brings in petition to which Bob Brown got thirteen signers.  Reciving note from Braumer saying they had recieved all my ties.  Got the money $59.60 P.M.  Deposit at  2nd 55.00 of it.  went out to Uncle John's toward night to see about getting cow.  Kelly went with me and we will go after her tomorrow morning early.  Prohibition camp meeting began today and will continue ten days.  Leran that Zack Huffman is dead.  Abbott finish sawing scraps and settle with him $1.75 cash.  McMurtice put on new sky light at store yesterday.  Gobed 10 PM.

About clear.  Kelly and self start for Uncle John's at  7.30.    Got cow home after time about noon.  She is pretty wild and we left calf  with her tonight.    Warm day and no signs of rain.  Wind S. and light.  Zach Huffman was buried  today, had been sick  several months,  Gobed 9.30 AM.

Clear.  Cow and calf gone this morning.    Went out to Uncle John's in morning she was not there nor could we find her anywhere in time.  Baby feeling badly.  Tue and self drove round time after supper taking baby.  With girls a while after very hot but all slept up stairs.  Very clear day.  Go bed  10 PM

31  Tuesday  4.55  Ther.  74.  97.  81.  clear.  Tue and self got breakfast and went out to Uncle John's and round by Stockton looking for cow and calf.  Could hear nothing other   got home 9 AM.  Start at 6.15 leaving girls in bed.   Miss Kumayer scrubs out hall and puts my things out doors.  Went up to get hover but not cleaned off so didn't go.  Order Bbl. flour of McComwell. Co.  Buy coffee and bacon got some liver.  This has  been the (?) for heat.  Wind S. lightning NE at night.  Gobed 10 PM.

August 1888

Clear.  drove out to Uncle John's after breakfast.  they found the cow yesterday morning down by Klines.  Think hurt (?) yesterday as she does not seem to feel very well.  Shower with good deal of thunder and wind came up  about 2 PM, quite heavy rain here but little north west of town.  Drove a while after supper.  Tu e gets Mrs. Dickerson to wash tomorrow.  Mrs. R. couldn't come.  Mrs. W has quit.  Gobed  10 PM.

Clear.  Mrs. Dickerson washes.  Not feeling very well self to much hot.  Mrs. Davis gets home afternoon has been gone two or three weeks.  Drove a while at night with Tue.  Very warm.  Billy Kelly paints roof over  c(?) and gutter.  Thought  of going out to Uncle Js tonight but Tue wouldn't.  Fire bell rang early AM.    Gobed 11 PM.

S.E.1.  gs.  Get start for Loxa before 8 AM.  Met Steam Threshing out near Jo Reats.  I drive through Loxa about 9.30.  Met Florence Gaines.  I took in whole farm.  Things looking better than average farm this year.  Paul with Cox and a hand were plowing corn S.E. of house.  Charley Jones paid 5.00 Oakley rent.  Charley will renew my sub. to R.H.  I get home 12.30.  Part cloudy, fresh south wind.  Get Ben Oats at I.B.M. at late P.M.  Tue over at Groves at night.  Jim Turner died last night.  No word from Emmett and letting work go for the present.  Gobed 9.30

Clear.  S.3.  Get shave at Browns after breakfast, paid 30 c.  So much  firing in vicinity that don't hitch up till about noon.  Old mare and Jack dog kind of crazy about fire crackers.  However I took them both out P.M. without accident.  I drove out by Al Latta's place return by Helen's in time for supper big crowds have gone to the park today and to Mattoon.  Phebe and Fern went over to Mattoon on 2.30 P.M. car.  Part cloudy with sp. rain about 3 P.M.  Emmett phones that will work tomorrow if I want him.  Gobed 10

Clear.  Baby sick this AM.  Tue sends for Dr.   Bill Kelly works all day for me.  (?) out washes windows, &c.  (?) hauls down load of old lumber.  hat here P.M.  Give up keys to Miss Kemayer P.M., she signs lease dated July 4th.  Still have skylight and some other things to fix.  Myers came up in morning and makes lots of promises about rent, pays Tue $1.00.  Tomorrow he will owe balance 3.12 and rent for July 6.00.  Looks like rain at night.  Lightning in N.  Sultry day and night. Tue and baby sleep downstairs until after midnight.  Think baby better.  Gobed 10 PM.

Mostly clear.  Very few people in town today.  Kirk & Co.up with Tess say they are going to quit.   Have put out 120 the last time went down to H RR () Kirk & Co count them.  Paid them $11.00 in full.  Girls celebrate with fire crackers.  Baby better.  Rain storm at night with some wind N. about 9 P.M.  Cooler at night, gobed 9 PM.

Clear.  McMurtrie puts up 8 ft. of shelving works from 7 AM till about 2 PM.  John McCormick paints two old counters and stair shelving P.M. has just been  painting Mrs. Monroe's front.  Pay him in full 50 c.  Drove down to Nickleson place after supper and post notice to quit on door.  Ed Eastin had a runaway yesterday and more serious one today about dark his rig lands in creek near culvert.  Miss. Kemayer wants to move tomorrow.  Hot day   Gobed 10 P.M.

Cloudy and foggy damp morning.  Kelly does not work today.   (?) paints on front.  Kirk and Co.  get on their case.  (?) Dunbar gave us pint  of (?) .  Spoke to Alex Briggs about stone on  (?) yard. Sprinkle in P.M.  Get shaved at Mays Shop Cr.  Baby about sick.  Tue says it is the hives.    Go to bed  1o oc  Kate Myers to supper.

Clear.  Baby sick all day  thought about sending for  (?) but didn't,  Lear that  Urn Ricketts daughter, Ellen, is dead in Terre Haute.  Drive while PM with Tue.  afterward with M & P and Maurice Larry.  Pleasant day and warm.   Gobed 9 PM.

Cloudy, heavy rain in night.  Self sick in night.  Baby better this morning.  Kelly works  - store A.M.  brought down "goods" and  some barrels.   Worked at home P.M.  Make gate to cow lot (?).  Mrs. Rogers washed AM.  McCormick paints in front AM. didn't work afternoon.  Rep. Convention in session at Chicago for past week  today nominated Ben Harrison for president and Morton for v. president.

Cloudy, showers in night.  McCormick finishes painting.  Get cornice and Kelly cleans them off.  (?) on old sideboard.  There was an alarm of fire  last night which proved to be an alarm sounded by authorities in consequence of mob that came on 11 P.M. train to lynch a negro confined in jail  for rape committed at Mattoon last week.  They hung him at I&StL tank down at depot.  (?) deal of talk in town today.  Baby was sick and cried a good deal in night.  Think it must be her teeth.  Tue sent Maggie for Dr. but did not see him.  Gobed 9 PM.

Cloudy.  Heavy rains in night.  Pay John McCormick  in full for papering and painting $10.40.  Kelly and self work on old side board.  Heavy rain most of forenoon.  Wind N. heavy winds most of day.  Very discourage able.  Kelly and self straighten up stairs toward night.  This is the longest spell of wet weather we have had for a year or two.  Kate Davis over at night.  9.30 P.M.

Cloudy and damp.  Heavy rains in night.  Wind NW this morning.  Baby slept better last night.  Miss Kemayer measures room for carpet.  She says I may leave ice box in room.  Kelly does not work today.  Remit  Bethesda Spring $3.00 - Knock and self fasten brackets on cornice with wire P.M.  Have about  decided to send old cow home.  Cloudy day NW wind: fine rain P.M.  Gobed 10 PM.

Cloudy wind N.E.  Kelly mows round house, weeds out strawberries.  Get sideboard down to house; begin cleaning up furniture:  move far corridor Knock and Sutton helping.  Was going to meeting  of  Electric light Co. at night but decided can't take any  stock.  Pay Miss Johnston in full for Maggies lessons 13.50.  Clears off before noon pleasant day NE wind.  Gobed 9 PM.

Clear.  Kelly works all day cleaning furniture and wood work.  McMurtrie says he will make shelves, Monday sure.  Doc Dunbar gives me a bottle of medicine.  Miss Kemayer wants possession Tuesday.  Pay Kelly check 5.00 still owe him 2.00.  Kate Davis over a while at night.  Went up town at night for shave and shirts.  Gobed 11 P.M.

Clear.  No gasoline this morning had to  borrow of Ms. Wentz.  Kelly  went up before noon and pretend to  scrub out room doing very poor job.  Drive east of town with Tue after dinner .  write letter to Ya Hadley about piling his lumber.  Roads are dry but somewhat rough.   gobed 9 PM----
