Partly clear.  Chilly.  One cuiculio this AM.  Plums seem to be about half grown.  The stone getting hard a very small percent of the lombard and quakenboss have been stung.  More of the bradshaw and wild goose which have been neglected.  Drove out to Uncle John's  with Tue before noon.  Took Kelly down to timber after dinner & he is going to work a few days  at building fence.  Find Kirk & Co. working on a "branch fence" cutting timber 18 inches  through.  They stop. I got home about 7.30 P.M.  Some kind of a show at church to which Tue and girls went .  Gobed 10 PM -

Clear.  Started for lumber about 10 AM.  Kelly,  R. Easten and W. Fritz work at fence and clearing get nearly to first corner.  Jack Vaughn agrees to help tomorrow.  Mrs. Rogers washed.  Tue got ready for Mr. Dodunede to paper but he sent word he could not to it this week.  Gobed 10 PM  Silas Barnes is dead in California.

About clear went to timber again whole gang of 4 men work all day.  Bob hauling out posts and lumber.  Engage Jim McCormick to paper front room tomorrow.  Windy day and very warm.  Signs of rain.  Have discontinued jarring off cuculios.  Think they have quit.  Gobed 10.30 PM.

May 20-22, 1888 in Charleston, Illinois

Clear with SE wind.  No curculio, think  found one about last Wednesday and a few plums that had been stung then no more.  Had big  mess of mushrooms for breakfast bought of Geo. Modual yesterday.  Went there to perk horse with H.G. and W.S.G. in forenoon.  Talk of going to Indianapolis next Thursday to look round.  Drove while toward night with Maggie and after with Tue and Phebe.  Phebe ran against the  corner of the house and hurt herself, bruised her face and head.  8.30.

  Clear.  wind SE.  Got letter from Birnhuser Bartle, they think I can sell my furniture to Walsh at Mattoon.  Mrs. Rogers washes.  Warren Decker says he will  begin hauling wood tomorrow.   Plant six row white stone potato in bottom.  Winter says will have my suit done Thursday.  Think some of going over to Indianapolis with  H.G. to look round.  Warm pleasant day E. wind go bed 9 PM.

Some cloudy E. wind.  Start for timber at 7 AM with Bill Kelly work till  after  5 P.M. at clearing out fence row.  Hot day down there.  Got home little after 7 PM.  Tue thinks the baby has the measles.  Mrs. Rogers irons.  Pay  R. Rutherford order on N. McMorris for 1.00  Did not have my (?) with me.   Pleasant day, things growing.  Baby was very restless at night.  Gobed 9 P.M.  Decker hauled wood to E.H. Clark.

Cloudy and raining form N.W. rained some in night.  Drove down to Myers at Nicholson place, says he will not be able to work for me any more and will have to pay rent in money.    H.G got at  Four Leaf round  Fatty Knocks shop in P.M.  Sell Kenshaw 65 posts and 800 ft. fencing to be delivered this week.  Got Andy Mock to straighten up load of lumber on yard.  Chilly  cloudy day.  Wes Caylon hauls me down load of fencing from yard.  Wind NW gobed 10 PM~

Cloudy N. wind.  Start with Crass for timber at 7 AM.  Got to work at lumber about 9.30.  Brown helps till we quit.  R Rutherford helped in afternoon  We got home about 8 AM.  Think another half day will finish the job.  Chilly day, with N. or M.E. wind cloudy all day roads  (?) went by  Walkers and return by Blakeman.  gob 10PM

Cloudy E. wind.  Father was sick in night and did not get  up to  breakfast but was round town  before noon.  Kirk & Co brought up  two loads of lumber mostly fencing in all 1244 ft. paid them 5.00.  H.G. says he will go in with me to put up a sawmill in town - will do so at once.  Look round for fellow to help make garden didn't find anyone.  Crass sent word that he was sick.  I set about 75 strawberry plants just before dark.  Mrs. Rogers washes.  Tue takes in the clothes and hurts herself lifting.  City sawp(?) line  for sewer from Johnston building.  Gobed 10 PM  Mostly clear day.  Settle with Caylor today.

April 23-25, 1888 in Charleston, Illinois

Clear. N.E. Clear all day, cool  Comer was up and we settle up in full paid him check $52.94.  Mrs Rodgers washed.  I walked out to coal shaft in P.M.  They have gone 230 ft.  Cu(?) home by its pent house and depot.  Trees came from Starrs & Harrison.   Bethesda per Jule Beall came today.  Gobed 9.30 P.M.

Clear. N.E. wind.  Myers came at 7 AM. and worked all day.  setting trees and vines.  Rutherfords were up (?) ties.  Pay Jake & R 10.00 and Ruben 2.50.  Meyers pretty slow duing to large boil on neck.  Didn't get nearly done.  Mrs. Rogers ironed.  Have not planted much garden yet.  Too dry and cool for anything to grow.  There was heavy white frost last night and ice found .44 inch thick in open pan out doors.  Gobed 9.30 P.M.

Clear. E.wind.  No indication of frost this morning.  C. Gordon (?) off and piles ties.  Have 133 out now.  Speak to Johnston about ponk house.  Gordon and Campbell help in PM., set raspberries and cut willows, am very sorry I had the willows cut.  Pleasant day with easterly wind and quite warm in P.M.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Clear.  Violent NW wind all night cold night and froze up waterworks and pump in kitchen.  Rec. seeds from store H.G. remains at house all day.  Clear day , strong N.W. wind moderates a little toward night. Sell Mrs. Turman 50c. woods.  Kate Davis was over toward night.  Maggie and Phebe were over to Davis' in evening.  sat up till nearly midnight not feeling well.  11.30

Cloudy, SE wind.  Mrs. Rogers washes.  Snow and rain lightly several times during day, but clear and  bright in afternoon.  Sam Leitch came down to see about fencing.  Tell him will let him know tomorrow.  He advises me to run for  assessor or collector.  Send to Stern and Harrison for some cherry trees and grape vines.  Gobed 9.30 PM

Cloudy, E. wind.  Intended to go to timber today but it looked too much like rain.  Fine mist in morning getting heavier and turning to rain after noon.    Rained all day P.M. and probably all night freezing  as it fell.  Uncle John was down to dinner.  Sold him some lumber $4.20.  Went to Republican convention nominating  delegates to  Co Covention.  Dem Tp Convention  P.M.  Comer thinks his chances are good for collector.  Tue irons and gets about sick.  H.G. takes last of liquor at store.  J. Ria  pays for Cambell's wood.  Caylor paid me 2.50 for wood sold.  Have only abt. 3 1/2 cords left.  Sat up till 12.30.

Clear W. 2.  I had attack of indigestion or something else after retiring and slept but little after going to bed.  Think billions (sic) attack.  I have been eating too much sausage and such stuff without doing any work.  The bale clover hay recently from  I.B. worst I ever    wish I had a hundred tons of it for manure.  I wire up W.C. so we don't find it frozen as usual.  Tue gets up earlier than usual.  Tue went calling to Curds and LeRoys after R.C.  I take some of Starr's little meddy all day and feel some better at night.  Gobed 8.30.

Mostly cloudy wind SW.  Mrs. Rogers comes to wash at 8 AM.  Saveley finishes wood which pay him for 40 cts.  Maggie, Phebe both went to school.  We killed and dressed our two turkies (sic)  after dinner.  They  weighed dressed 6 and 6 1/2 lbs.  Ruth Davis  was over in afternoon.  Sam Leitch told me this AM that the liquor men had better get their petition ready for next council meeting.  Mrs. Ed Eastin called  P.M.  Mostly cloudy day changing cooler in  afternoon with strong westerly wind.  Go Bed.  10.30 P.M.  Toake says he has sold the Nicholson place for $500.

Clear.  S.2.  White frost.  Tue complaining in night.  Rhoda came 7 AM. to  wash.  She stays to dinner.  Tue gets letter from Muggs.  Went up to Brown's for shave and hair cut for first time since the grip.  Paid .40  Tue and Phebe fix up box for each Muggs and Buddy.  Mailing  Muggs  at night.  It clouded up before noon continuing all day   It began to rain light showers 6 P.M. and kept it up much of the night.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Cloudy.  Mist.  S.3.  Light rains much of night and sprinkles this morn (.83)  Tue not feeling well but irons much AM.  She has tiff with roomer.They read light meter for month P.M. 684000.  The Dec. no of Geographic came today.  Tue over to Groves at night till late.  Phebe ate supper at Frances Stodderts.  They sent Buddy's box by express.  Cloudy day with moderate northerly winds.  The papers have been talking about a cold wave for two or three weeks but it has not come.  The mud roads are reported very bad.  Am out of cobs as well as corn.  Have coal enough to last till March with this  kind weather.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Cloudy wind S.E. light snow flying.  Maggie and self went up after newspaper.  Left word for Dr. Patton to come down and see baby, she (?) so much better after dinner.  Tue sent word that he needn't come.  Cloudy all day and thawing on south side.  Had duck for dinner.  Hung up meat in smoke house toward night.  Tue  went over to Wentz.  Girls up to  Davis before night.  Go bed 10~~

Cloudy, wind light S.W.  A.H. Prevo  paid  (?) AM is going away tomorrow P.M.  Bue Dawsom pays up in afternoon.  Mrs. Rogers washes twoweeks(sic) wash.    Comer and two men at work stacking ties  was down to see them in afternoon.  Engage John Savely and Lem McKee help tomorrow.  Tue feeling badly today.  Left her things out all night.  Maggie went to school.  Clear off PM. wind NW  Gobed 10 PM.
