October 1890

19.  Sunday.  7AM.  Ther 36.

Mostly clear with fresh wish. Paint wood box for Tue and start for Ranch soon as got dinner get there 4.30 P.M. ride over east pasture and fire a brush heap.  Simons and Riley Easton about finished hauling hay yesterday and think I have about 6 ton from Anderson.  Pleasant day but cool  gobed 8 P.M.

October 1901

19.  Saturday.  Buffalo day today at P.A. and decide not to attend Exposition today.  Threatening weather, light rain about 10 AM.  Went to Niagara about 10 AM. by  trolley about, remain all day.  Return to Columbia about dark very tired and retire early.

The Pan- American Exposition was a world's fair.  President McKinley, while visiting the Temple of Music,  was shot September  6.

26.  Thursday.  5 AM  Ther  78.97.  80.

Mostly clear day with very little wind and more sultry than yesterday.    J.B McComas looks at logs and buys them at 3.50 to take them tomorrow.  Nick caught a cecropia at night - male - a female we had has laid about  200 eggs and died.  Riley Easton brought up Welches lumber.  Uncle John in P.M. looking for man to cut wheat.  A little sign of rain today.  Tue and children slept on floor in front room self up stairs 11 PM.

Clear,  no wind.  McComas came for logs.  they only averaged about 75 lbs.  Tue picked berries in morning.  Dickinson washed  buggy &c  Comer in town AM.  Too hot for anything,  Light thunder showers in NE.  Lightning at night.  Steve Douglas adjudged insane and went to asylum.  Pay J A Weaver and Art Glass Co   about the hottest night  go bed 10.30 PM.

Mostly clear.  Tue picks berries AM.  Another hot day.  everybody complaining of heat.  Not very large crowd in town for Saturday.  Trade fair.  Most of  gang up from timber and paid off.  Did not see Comer, he left his book at store.  Uncle John in town looking for me n to cut wheat.  Warren Decker  up with load of lumber.  He refuses to haul up hogs or haul my hogs down.  Sheridan Ashby  died today having been sick two or three weeks.  Cloudy with S.Westerly wind.  Gobed up stairs at midnight - -

Clear.  Southwesterly wind.  Girls went to S.S.  Buddie [Marie] to Christian Church with  Mary Davis.  They all went riding with Dr. Hall toward night.  this has been one of the warmest days, thunder and appearance of rain  S. P.M.  Tue and self pick a few berries at night.  Tue did not go to church.  Go bed 11 P.M. upstairs

Part cloudy.  Mrs. Rogers washes.  Heavy  shower 930 to 10.30 AM. with much thunder.  Send DWRs 9 Bbl to  Samuels.  Baseball game today.  Trade fair.  Self about sick.  Gobed 10.30 PM~~

Cloudy apparently general rain / AM till 5 AM or 6 AM.  Went down after Jubal didn't  find him; hunt up Jo Crail  They both came P.M.  Jube  mowed front yard.  Jo worked at Crossing.  50 c each.  Maggie crowd had function here at night~~ keep self awake  till midnight.  I get fine lot of Pleurotus ostreatus  down at Geo Waters which didn't have for supper.  The rain last night was the heaviest we have had this summer.  Lightning at night with rain later in night  Gobed 9 PM.

28.  Friday.  5.30 AM.  Ther  74.  95.  74.  =  81

Clear SW wind.  Went up town before breakfast got some ham.  Mrs. Bell has been milking since Monday.  Weeds in pasture are cutting yield of milk.  there was quite heavy shower after midnight last night and another 4 - 5 P.M.  Hen [Henry Hildreth] and Ora drove into shed out of rain but didnt stay long.  Farmers say no plowing this week.   I drove  out S.W. getting two boxes of Russula viescens not much good and didn't cook them.  Sultry Day.  S.W. wind.  Buy rubber storm apron W. & T. 1.00 Cr.  Talk a while with Geo Brown north of P.O.   go bed 9 P.M.

Clear.  N. wind.  No rain last night but thundered in west toward morning.  I went up to  Pinnells for meat before breakfast  Buy chicken, 15 c.  per lb. have been 17 c. alive.  Pay interest at 2d Natl.  $175.00 Called at State Bk to settle, say call Monday.  Get Jubal to hoe garden and take home Mrs. Walkers chair AM.  pd. Jubal 25. c.  Settle with Crail work done Thursday 50 cts.  Speak to C. about Talbot boy says will cut it for me.  Jo Courtney  thinks he will handle it on shares.  Take Marie P.M. to take home dishes used Thursday night &c.  They are counting on big celebration here on July 4.  I suffer much  from the heat today.  Drive with Tue after supper to get chicken &c.  Clear day with west wind very sultry  Gobed 10 P.M.

Clear , southwest wind  Would have gone down to Simon's but promise to hot.  Drive down to Woodson place looking for fungi.  Saw none  This seems strange.  Same gypsies camp down by school house south that Lucus out near Gaines.*  Mrs. Knox stays to dinner and supper.  She is staying at Mrs. Purtills.  Too warm for me to move round much Southerly wind and clear all day.  Gobed.  10 P.M.

Cloudy.  Wind SW. light snow flying Maggie and Phebe both went to school.  Phebe has not been since 9th  inst. Pay off men for piling ties yesterday $4.30.  Comer up and working at ties, am going to let him finish them.  Ed Eastin pays me balance on note.  12.30 releasing mortgage on lot. Cleared off before noon: wind W.  Tue  got letter from Aunt Mate.  Went down to tie pile after dinner.  Strong wind from N.W.  Snow melting fast.  Pay winter bal 13.36 Recketts 15.00 both in full.  Caught more cold and laid up at nights with sore throat.  Maggie has very bad cough.  Turns colder toward night.  Gobed.  10 P.M.

26  Thursday.  7 AM  ther 2.  22. 20.
Clear NW.  Maggie and Phebe don't go to school.  My throat some better this morning.  Worst cold I have had for two years.  Sell Ike Hughes half cord of wood.  Somebody hauled load of new posts to yard 52. probably Riley Eastin.  Comer finished stacking ties.  I have been out $6.50 on this job.  Recketts took clock up to shop and repaired case.  Bought Gelatin and glycerin.. N. Main returned borrowed book by Sexhres.  Hat was down toward night.  Pleasant day get chilly with westerly wind.  Maggie and Phebe both have bad colds.  Gobed 10PM~~


January Paid McKee1.25 and Sandy .45 for Comer for work done yesterday.

Nearly clear.  Wind North.  Undertake to make a copying pad but fail.  Tue sewing on dark dress for her mother.  Maggie and Phebe still remain from school   their colds not being any better.  Went down to switch ties and put Comer's on each pile according Bruner's instruction.  Tue writes a letter to Aunt Mate at night.  Has been pleasant day,  clear with chilly north wind.  Gobed 11 PM

Nearly clear.  Wind easterly.  Baby cried good deal in night and coughed like croup.  R.R. Browne of Helena, Ark in town   A.Bunk pd. a/c in full $1.65.  Uncle in and down to dinner. seems to think Snider biz. in pretty bad shape.  Comer in before noon.  The R.R. man did not receive ties up again Monday.  Bought  1 lb coffee at Vansickles.  Sold  half cord of wood to C. Mason Cr.    Total eclipse of moon in evening.  The roads are still good and lots of wood coming in.  Gobed.  10 PM  Pay Riley Eastin for 105 posts $3.25.

Clear N.2.  Edith Bates called AM.  Phebe entertains her.  We have dinner 1.30 PM.  Harman and Preston call having been at sale N. of  town.  They leave lot of harnesses in barn  Roy leads mare to Siberts to remove shoes.  Phebe gets letter from Ethel Corey at Chicago.  Clear day with light SSW wind.  Red at sunset.  Ora Webb calls at night.  Phebe making phudges (sic) or something else to send to Buddy.  I did not read any at night.  Gobed 8.30

Clear., Wind N.E.  Baby slept. better than night before but not well yet.  Uncle John was in town, came down but did not stay to dinner.  Hen is still complaining.  Collect from John Rennells $7.00  A. Bengner $2.00,  Aubain $2.16 Rall a/c in full.  Roads  good and big crowd in town.  Riley Easton brings me 52 Posts.  Pay him $1.50 for them.  Snider called P.M. but didn't see him.  Baby better P.M. but worse again at night.  Comer in town says will pile ties Monday.  Clear day with N.E. wind.  Gobed 10P.M.

Cloudy, wind, N.W.  1/4 in. of light snow fell in night.  Sold Mrs. Mount 2 cord wood which she get delivered.  Al Prevo came down to dinner and talked two or three oclock.  Bob Brown brings up load of walnut lumber.  Riley Easton has hauled up couple  of loads  posts new and old this week which I pay him for.   M. Sandy pays me 2.00 on a/c.  Snider calls an hour or two P.M.  Ferd over at Wentz  Helen here.  Tue writes couple of letters at night one to Aunt Maggie not very well takes medicine.  Gobed 11 P.M.

18.  Wednesday.  7 A.M.  Then.  0.  11.  9.
Clear wind westerly.  A.H. Prevo denies a portion of his a/c and doesn't pay the balance.  Sold John Rickett a why Bbl 1.00 C. Mas(?) pays up for wood 3.00  Snider called a while but didn't see Luse.  Maggie did not go to school.  The cold spell since last Saturday has been the most severe ever known in the northwest.  Saturdays paper containing  list of two hundred fatal cases of freezing.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Clear, S.W. wind.  Tue not very well but better P.M.  Present bill to Winter 24.39.  did not examine his closely.  Snider did not come up.  Tue baked some pumpkin pies.   Both girls stay home from school.  Comer in about noon.  Pay him check 55.00.  Bought  2 dressed ducks also some buck wheat at Mitchells pay cash for nearly everything now.  Go bed 11 P.M.

Clear, S.W. 2.  Tue got a letter from Buddy, also card from Muggs at St. Louis.  She had not met Miss Wales.  I drove over to Harryman warehouse but he didn't have  time to talk.  Tue got letter from Mrs. West telling that Armstrong had not patched plastering in Loxa house.  Tue decides to go out there with me tomorrow and prepare to take early start weather permitting.  Clear day moderate S.W. wind.  Fannie Cottingham called after I  had retired.  Gobed 8 P.M.

Dark and smokey strong S.W. wind most of night.  Change cooler wind W about 7 A.M. with some snow flying.  Growing colder all day.  furious wind blowing some boards off store roof.  Uncle John  was down to dinner.  Apple trade not very good not many in town for Saturday.  Comer was intoward night but did not settle.  Said he would be in tomorrow.  Freezing cold all P.M.  Wind N.W.  Settle with Riley Easton for posts to date.  Tue has toothache at night.  Gobed 10 P.M.  Mostly cloudy day.  Alarm of fire about  1.30 P.M.

Clear wind S.  Drove out to coal shaft after breakfast then to Comer's to Janesville, Linder land and back home at  4.30 P.M.  Seph McClasky went with me.  Roads good. Fresh S. wind all day, cloudy toward night.  Tue  and girls up at Davis.  Go bed 10.30 P.M.

Clear but clouds over and rained a little about 9 AM.  Mrs.  Young came to wash but went home on account of the rain.  Wind changed to N.W. before noon getting cooler.  Comer was in P.M. we went out to Coal Shaft.  Got another lumber bill from Cumming.  Rec. letter from Brunen saying will be here in morning to look at switch ties.  Council began today  and good many people in town.  Gobed 9.30 P.M.  Kate Perrill  and friend call at night.  Sold Shackleford some old lumber.

Clear.  Wind, about N.   Met Bruner  up town went daown to switch ties.  He  seems well pleased with them. Drove down to Kickapoo before dinner.  Riley Easton brought up a load of posts which don't suit me very well.  Trade dull today.  Clear day wind S.E. toward night.  Mrs. Young washes.  Mrs. Feagan over in evening.  Tue not very well non self. coudn't sleep.  Drank ten for supper.  Phebe crys good deal in night.  Go bed 9.30 PM

Part Cloudy.  I slept but little last night on account of stomach trouble.  I pass today without eating.  Tue wanted to call Doc. but than(sic) can handle case myself.  It was caused by eating two hearty meals to near together.  Hitch up horse in morn but did not use her.  Tue went to church AM getting R.H.  She doctors me up at night and think am going to feel better.   Much cloudy at times N. or N.W. wind.  Gobed 9

Clear.  Sent Bill for lumber inspection to Narrow Gauge amt. 186.45  Girls went to fair in morning with Davis folks.  Went myself before noon.  Came back with children about 4 P.M.  Good crowd for Thursday.  Pay Riley Easton balance on boards 3.70 check.  Father went to fair afternoon.  Baby cross she has just got her first two teeth this week.  Mosquitoes have bitten her on the face,  They are more numerous this year than ever before supposed to come from Eastin's yard which they have watered constantly.  Gobed 9 P.M.
