Partly clear southwest wind but clouds over.  Clara got up about 4 A.M. to wash.  Ground slightly frozen on surface this morning.  Tue trying to work, but not able to, but feeling much better.  Wind whips round to north about noon and grows colder all P.M. snowing lightly with high N. or N.E. wind.  Intended to go to Loxa but will wait for warmer day.  Tue over at Grove's at night.  Self been chewing some since yesterday.  Coal and wood both getting low and can't stand many days such weather.  Gobed  9.30 PM      about 1/4 inch of snowfall.

Clear mostly with strong N.W. wind  One of the worst days this winter.  ? matters to keep house warm a few days more it will exhaust all our fuel.  Self feel badly all day.  chewing tobacco which decides to quit.  Clara ironing.  Her brother Russel came P.M. staying all night.  The family except for Clara start for Indiana tomorrow   Strong NW wind all day sun shines and snow squalls  Gobed 10 P.M.

Clear westerly wind, Clara went to train to see her folks off about noon.  Learn that Mr. Shortess' father has just died.  Courier states that J.W. Gaines and wife were in town.  Set word to Jacob Trobaugh to come tomorrow.  I was feeling badly all day  sleepy.  Perhaps from quitting tobacco yesterday.  Go bed soon as got through supper.  Mort and Kate over at night.  Clear day, westerly wind.  Gobed 7.30 PM.

Clear S.W. wind.  Jack cleans out ashes &c.  AM. pay him all 40 (ink smudge).  Thought to go out to Gaines' before noon but get to talking to with Evans and Pinnell and others.  Start about there 2 P.M. find Jo laying a/c of grip, his wife still down with toothache.  Took their clock out.  Jo has finished burning hedge trimmings.  He rode to Loxa with me and will drive cow to Newby's in morn to dehorn.  Van Heu wants to sell me his team. Clear NW wind.  Tue gets special delivery letter from Phebe early AM. saying she would be home on 1.12 P.M. train.  Later recieve telegram that she had missed train and would start at 5.30 P.M.  I met her at Mattoon and we got home at 1 oclock night.  Tue had Reading Circle with refreshments P.M.  This was their last meeting here this season.  Cold mostly clear.  Fresh NW wind snowing flying at times  Gobed 1.30 A.M.

Mrs. G was letting cow which has young calf out of barn when she turned on her and towseled her around for two or three rods till Mrs.  got chance to get through a fence.  She tour(sic) of her clothes off and brushed her all over Jo telephoned for me but didn't get me.

PM.  Cloudy day N.E. wind NO rain or snow.  Several ladies including Charlotte Sproule call to see Maggie who lies in bed all day.  Tue up town a while at night,  Gobed 9.30 PM  Marie on cat our room.

Have been recently annoyed good deal by noises in house at night supped to come from water pipes.  They have moved C.L. Depot to south of tracks and are laying foundation for new on site of old one.

Clear southwind.  Heavy white frost.  Went uptown for sack corn meal.  Tue expecting company today,  Mrs.Knock and Mrs. John Hamalton of Mattoon.  Gaines came about 8 AM and hauled over Mrs. Knocks wood  He left about noon taking load of manure, also some shingles for patching roofs.  Warren Decker was up   I followed  him out nearly to Normal.  Says Brown sawed a day or two on custom work, this week.  Tue went up to Court House with her visitors after dinner.  Mrs. Lloyd and daughter wash AM. and will iron  Saturday.  Mostly cloudy day southerly wind occasional light sprinkles with drizzly rain at  night  Gobed 9 P.M.

Cloudy and raining lightly.  Somewhat foggy early Wind Northerly, Drizzly rain all day.  I  stay at home most of day.  Didn't hitch up till about noon.  Did not eat any dinner.  Took Tue to Reading Circle  at Dr. Ritters on Van Buren St. and went after her.  It quit raining before dark  Gobed after getting asleep on lounge 10 P.M.

Cloudy N.W. wind.  Mrs. Lloyd and daughter come to iron finishing before noon.  Tue and Mrs. Grove attend Orchestral Concert at Normal P.M.  I went out to Gaines P.M. getting home 6 P.M.  Loins back cow had red heifer calf this morning and Jo had her in barn trying ti milk her Big calf.  Mostly clear day with S.W. wind very chilly.  Roads muddy except gravel and pavement.  Wrote Mort Neal this morning answering letter from him yesterday referring to Walnut logs.  Gobed 8.30 P.M.

Clear.  Coldest morn since last Spring.   Northerly wind   Boy Clyde Ashby not studing very well.  I  spent part of AM over at Court House with Jerry Merrett in basement where he was sorting over records.  Drove out to Gaines after dinner  Drive down near branch where Jo was burning brush.  He is doing good Job of clearing.  Pat Downey has sold his B.C. for 85.00 Smith on Division got 80.00  I got some tomatoes and &c. also 11/2 doz eggs.  Roads getting quite dusty.  Cool clean day Northwind.  Got home 6.30 PM  Gobed 8 P.M.  Drove Queen.  Clyde and I could not harness Roan this morning.    

Parker dry goods and Ginthers hardware took fire about 8 PM 18th and damaged goods much.  (shorthand)

Mostly clear. hazy.   Mrs. Owens washing.  Shirley called bout 9 AM.  It was quite windy.  Insisted we sitting in kitchen says will not cut anybodys BC stubble nor corn stalks.  Saw him later up town.  Speak to Bill Scott about selling the Cols place.  Reese has spoken of buying it.  Pat Downey sold his BC for 85.00.  There is talk of higher sales but this is highest I know of.  I start out Loxa 2 P.M.  Boy rides to Fair Ground with me.  I stop there an hour or two  WA Campbell on ground.  Got to Gaines about 4 PM.  Retha rode home from S.H. with me.  Mrs Gaines not at home.  Jo grubbing  Sprinkles rain about 5.30  Stay to supper and all night.  Learn Shirley is talking of renting Berts farm.  &c.  lot of stuff mostly about Shirley.  Play cards till bed time 9 P.M.

Called at Ora's.  She still in bed with Malarial and alone.  Hen gone to Iowa.  Saw McPheron but got no money from him.  Get home 4 oclock  Tue not very well.  busy getting Phebe ready to go to Chicago.  Ferd here.  Is not going to N.Y. at present.  Cloudy day  Gobed 8 P.M.

Cloudy misty, spr rain about 5 and afterwards I intended to for look for mushrooms but rain stop me.  Up to John Marshalls office AM.  Take him to "Col" and the Col signs deed to me  Hat also signed.  He will retain possession of house for 6 months unless he can sell at his price after which time if not sold I can sell at my price.  The charges against it now amount to about 1500.00  Saw Henry Neal P.M. about Loan association Mortgage.  Says they will make it easy easy as they can for me.  John Shafer has two "bricks" which he claims he found on Blakeman place which he shipped to the mint as silver. Parker & Co., are closing  out after their fire.  They have two or three rooms rented round town.  Mrs. Knock was over P.M. and she and Tue went to Parker's sale. Zion on Zacks.  Got home 6.30 P.M.  Buy onions of Dick Wright as I passed.  There has been much work done down that way in two weeks.  Saw no corn planting done.  The river seems pretty high.  They have been catching good many fish.  Kate Grove came over after supper, Morty later.  I found one morel today, the first for two or three years.  Part cloudy day gobed 8.30

Mean temperature 54.37.  Maximum 86 on 22d Minimum 22 on 9th clouds 51 +% Precipitation mostly rain on 11 days 2.52  the heaviest 1.26 on night of 6th Snow flying on the 8th  Ice about 3/4 on 8: 1/2 in on 9th:  1/5 on 10th:  1/8 on 30th  There has been much complaint of dry weather.  Grass has not grown much for past two weeks.  Farmers are getting well along with their work.  Oats were sown late but ate looking well.  Clover meadows much damage by freezing &c.  Wheat looks well.  There is prospect of good fruit crop.  Have seen no corn planted.  They retail corn at stores at 80 to 90 cts.  Hay about 20.00  they charge 60 cts for oats.  There have been many fish caught at river, bass &c.  Geo. Wright alone in 1st ward.  Orr and Patton for Mayor  McCum Treas.  Blankenbaker and Harter clerk  Theaker and Chambers Attorney, are the candidates.  License to sell liquor is also an issue.  The election went off smoothly no excitement and apparently very little work done for and against license.  License carried by 76 majority and the entire dem. ticket elected excepting Chambers.  Had horse shod in front at Rice's.   Buggy got run into by runaway horse.  Clear day E. wind  Go bed 10.30 P.M.

Ice 1/8 in.  we heard door slam up stairs in night last.  1.30 AM. and feared burglars, but proved to be nothing more than a latch slippery.  I  had to shave myself again and don't like it very well.  Tue went to church AM.  Boys seem to be figuring on playing ball again at the Library  lot.  I hitch up 3 P.M.  Tue went over to Groves  till night.  I drove to Alexander woods going by Ashmore road crossing to S. road on E road.  Clear day light NW winds.  Self not feeling well.  Go bed 9 P.M.

Clear.  N.1.  Bill and Jo plant their potatoes at Mrs. Curds.  I hitch up and start Loxa about 10 AM.  Mare was very downsy(sic) along road.  I did  not get there till nearly noon.  Harman and Shrievs sowing oats east of branch.  They have only about 15 acres sown.  I drove up through place.  They have got 80 wired up.  Had to go up to gate west of house.  Met Shrine at BC shed.  He went over the east cover meadow with  irri(sic).  It will have to be plowed up.    The S.W. field, 20 a, very doubtful except small piece of timothy.  I took him home and return through Loxa.  Did not see Harman.  He started for his other place soon after I got to shed.  Drove round by  Loxa house but did not stop there.  Get sack meal at Jones  paid 10.  Charley  pays me house rent 6.70.  Talk with Hugh Sidenstricker and  Al Harman.  Stop at Gaines.  Mrs. G. brought the Retha baby out to see me.  They are remodeling their house.  the roads are dry, some rough except gravel.  I got home say 4.30.  Got  new record from Phebe AM.  Jack dog didn't go.  Mrs. Chas. Light R. began in night.  Bowles not any worse.  I build a fire in furnace 10.30 AM. to dru off the damp mess.  The atmosphere is loaded with moisture.  A light drizzle all AM does not better things.  It continued to drizzle till say  2 PM.  Meas at 3 P 53 Tue got some "Cod" fish last evening which is too different.  Tue attends RC PM at Dillards with her article on Margaret Fuller.  She  got home 4.30 and later went up town Learn that Ruth Talbot died yesterday  Uncle John died nineteen years ago today.  Cloudy day think sun out once.  SE wind till toward noon when shifted to light northerly.  The Groves were over to 10. Frank Wilson died today.  Harman brought me sack of oats  first time in long time.  I owe him for same.  He drove in to Ruth Talbotts funeral at 2.30 P.M.  Tue attended same.  I hitch up late P.M.  driving up town.  Later got shoe at Evan's pd 50.  Mrs. Curd was over after supper.  She went with Tue to Grove's and elsewhere till after I retire.  Mostly cloudy day light E. to S. wind.  Gobed 9

Mc early for "same" and try to see him when passing uptown but didn't.  I hitch up mare A  Mostly cloudy day with easterly light wind becoming southerly.  Gobed 8.30M.   She acts very bad.  Curry her off  She is very dirty.   I went up to Interurban Sta for same.  Saw Latta who has bought house near Sta.  Get same about noon.  I drove south to Phipps and return.  the gravel and other roads pretty bad.  I got back 6.  Mostly cloudy day with easterly light wind becoming southerly.  Go 8.30.

March 1914 Weather

The Weather &c at Charleston, Ill for March 1914.  Mean temperature 41.  Max 70 on 15.25 and 29th Min 10 on 1st.  Clouds 49 1/2 % Precipitation 1.16 inches on fourteen days.  Snow about 3 inches in light falls on nine days  Winds ~ North 4 2/3;  N.E. 3;  E. 2 1/3;  S.E. 1 2/3;  S. 6; S.W. 3 2/3;  W. 4 2/3 and N.W. 5 days.  The precipitation has been light with much damp foggy weather.  The roads are  pretty bad (Mar. 31) gravel roads mushy in many places.  Roads have been worse early in month and were better about middle.  No farming done yet.  Rains have kept people out of their ground.  Grass growing fine in yard and will soon need mower.  Eggs    .  Butter country 30.  Oats Corn  Hogs  .  the wagon yard has been  closed to country people several weeks.  The city can't afford to pay rent on same.

Cloudy, N.E.2.  Self not well as usual.  Did not rest well.  Bill came 7 working till noon.  He took out ashes from furnace and cut wood which put in cellar also some pieces old walnut (braces).  It snows most of the day and Bill did not return.  Mrs. Curd was over an hour or two P.M. talking politics.  Tue reading up on RC work.  She was over at library at night.  She is feeling badly:  has been taking some kidney pills.  Cloudy day with some snow 1 1/2 in. north wind  go bed 8.30

Clear.  W.1. get a letter from Phebe  and a package by P.P. for Tue  also Phebe.  Weather predictions are for warmer weather and more of it.  Tue wrote Muggs, AM.  Boys annoy us good playing  ball on library lot running over our garden and  lot.  Their ball broke E. DR window in afternoon stirring them up to extent of  two dollars.  they took sash up to Briggs where it remained all night.  Tue had conniption about it and went over to Groves  till 10 P.M.  Clear day with brisk southerly wind.  I try to trim some grape vines.  Had to give it up.  The trouble with is becoming chronic.  Gobed 9 PM.

Clear.  N.1.  I spent bad night  with throat and stomach.  Thirty six years ago today we moved from Mrs. Norfolks house to the old house on this lot.  H.G.  brought  C.O. AM.  The birthday party came off all right with six guests all ladies.  Will Stoddert of Mott N.D. called a while.  He is farming up there.  He does not think much of machine plowing.  He starts home today.  Tue got home 5 P.M.  Bright clear day light  southerly winds.  I am dicting (sic) in eating.  I have good appetite for sick man and eat  too much.  Gb

Sleep was no good last night night.  Tue  complaining of her back ; Rheumatiz.  We get letter from Buddy A.M.  Think throat some better.  Think JEM is weakening the booze slightly.  Tue went to R.C. P.M.  She took Harman check for corn to deposit at 2d 30.90.  I fix up one of his check books P.M.  Later shave - since 4th (?)  It was a bad case.  I am becoming too lazy to do anything.  Late PM I walk round place awhile.  the snow has mostly disappeared,  but frost not all out except spots.  Think will get mare tomorrow.  Tue got home 6 P.M.  Clear day moderate SW wind:  the warmest day since Jan 29 when it was 60.  Gobed 9  Tue sends  package , shawl,  to Muggs and one to Phebe P.P.

Clear and pleasant, considerable (?).  Boys got  to work before 7. R & S did not come.  Stretching the two reels of wire closed gaps and got in good start on the fence from the corner W.    Warren brought teams and hauled out several loads of  plank and posts.  Pleasant day SW wind.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Fair, looked like thunder shower in P.M.  Bob and I  went over to S. side to stack a lot of ties.  Rutherford has moved out of house and Kink is staying there a lone making his .  count up 30 more for him.  Bob hauls us out lumber and posts  and boys work at fence.  R. and S. came after noon and work at clearing out road.  I start home about 4 P.M.  Found Tue about sick with bad cold which she has had for several days.  Go bed 9 P.M.

Cloudy and snowing N.E.5.  Snow seems to be about six inches deep.  Drifted badly and can't tell much about.  Phebe got away at 5.40 for 5.55 car.  She  soon returns no chance of her to make Havana trip today.  The  Methodist church was destroyed with only $6,000 ins.  It was valued at 22,000.  Cold and stormy most of day with light snow till toward. (sic)  The late coal is half slack and snow.  This makes mud.  Alfred came to chore but employed him mostly digging out  paths.  Will come tomorrow P.M.  Chas still sick.  Godbed 8.30 P.M.

8. Thursday- Had thought  to order my horse, but Harman borrows her to go to sale.  He bought a large gray mare at sale for 19.00.  thinks he is on trade for his Colo. land.

9. Friday.  Nothing "doing' today.  Tue attends R.C. at Pophams first meeting  since the 13 the (?).  

10.  Saturday. 6:30 AM.  We have not heard from Buddy for about two weeks.   We get letter from Buddy P.M.  She is all well but (?) Charles has taken Whooping cough.  Phebe over at Library at night.  I read Lucia till went to sleep.

11.  Sunday.  I devote much time to keeping up the fires.

12.  Monday.  6.30 AM.  coldest since last Mar. 2.  Hat invites family down to dinner.  Tue and Phebe went about 11 AM, but I stay at home.  

13.  Tuesday.  Find lower W.C.*froze up.  It let loose about 10 AM.  They fix up  box to send Buddy P.M. by P. Post.  Tue works P.M. getting ready  for washing tomorrow.    Saw Maynard Miller first time for 30 or 40 years.

4.  Thursday.  Tue received two 12 in Records from Muggs suppose for birthday.  Rhoda came after dinner and worked most of P.M. helping get ready for the reading circle which meets here tomorrow P.M. the first time since last winter.  I hitch up PM. and drive up and round town a while.  

5.  Friday.  Tue gets nice towel from Phebe by P.P.  Tue . . . gets ready for the R.C.  They began to appear about 2 P.M. and having hitched up before noon I  take a long drive going as far as the river E. of J.W.Kings.  I went by Kickapoo road returning by Wrightsville.  Bill having rode from Wrielle to Half Mile House.  He was hunting a stray horse..  

6.  Saturday.  Tue got letter from Buddy.  Tue got 4 Masda lamps today.  We learn that Ill BC has about doubled in rates.  Tue has birthday friends at night Mrs. Grove Mrs. Brooks, Mrs. Curd and Mrs. Campbell who used to live back  of us - now of Wyoming.  I did not feel well enough to meet them.

7.  Sunday.  Shaved self AM quite successful did not draw much blood.  Felt quite proud of job.

8.  Monday.  Doctor up old watch with peppermint.  I have not carried a watch for over a year.  Help tue recover her kitchen table.  H. and H. called a while at night.  He presents me with a small glass for Christmas I presume.  After they went home.  We look for  Phebe some today  She didn't come.  Gobed 9.30

9.  Tuesday.  Alfred has missed for several days.  Tue and self are doing chores.  She irons AM also kills one of her roosters.  Tue finished ironing.  We looked for Phebe all day.  She came before midnight.

10.   Wednesday.  Alfred  came but did not half do his work.  Tue and Phebe went to town toward night.

11.  Thursday.  Mail check which had forgotten to C.I.P.S. Co. $2.92 net for Nov. light.  They have recently raised their old rates.  By old rates it would be $1.86.  Pay phone for Nov. 1.50.  Tue and Phebe getting ready for R.C. entertainment tomorrow.  Several of the R.C. members called in evening staying till 9 P.M. or after.  I slept on lounge in den evenings.  

12.  Friday.  Learn that W.A. Campbell has moved his store to (?).  Drive with Phebe up town and then down to Normal and up town for bells for the "circus."  Se had a lunch in kitchen about 1 P.M. and the ladies began to arrive soon after. The function was reported a success.  Most of the R.C. members were present.  The RC borrowed several records of J.D. and we played these at times later.  

13.  Saturday.  Order rig and with Phebe return borrowed Things, bells &c.  Tue gets lamp with shade for sitting room.  Do not think much of it.

14.  Sunday.  Tue did not get down till after 8 Decide not able for trip to ranch One Hackett calls to look at lumber and brick and curry combs.  ha - ha.  He did not buy any thing, offer 5.00 for the pave brick.  The roads are generally good.  Autos made good use of them today.
