January 21-31, 1902 in Charleston, IL

January 1902

21.  Tuesday 6 AM.  Ther.  28.  33.  31.  =  30 2/3
 to be heavy and 3 to 4 inches deep, having fallen in night.  Did not hitch up today.  Went up town P.M.  Charley Smaclzle died yesterday.  Henry Brown (Blind) died today having been sick all winter  H.G. working for Shouts again; began yesterday.  Snow  fell most all AM.  Not heavy however.  Suppose there was there was 4 to 5 inches in all very wet.  Phebe went home with Hanna Marshall to stay all night.  Geo Linder "Jr" here to see about Eastin's place.  Learn that Mrs. E has sold for 3,000.00 to Park commish.  They bought the old Davis place week or two ago @ 4,000.00  Cloudy damp day barely not freezing.  Tue feeling badly  and lies on lounge much of time  Self not feeling very well.  Have not used any tobacco since Christmas.  Gobed  9 P.M.

22. Wednesday,  6AM.  Ther.  27.  36.  30.  =31
Cloudy light, NW wind.  Shirley called 9 AM. to make out lease but I was not ready.  He stayed till 11 AM.  Tue feeling some better today.  She was over at Groves till 9 P.M.  Cloudy day with light NW to Westerly wind.  Thawing all day, streets and walks covered with slush.  The Col. (H.G.) gave me a black dog which take home.  Snow does not go off very fast  Cooler and freezing at night.  Gobed 9 P.M.

23.  Thursday.  6 AM.  Ther  21.  38.  25.  =  28.
About clear, southerly wind.  Mrs. Smith comes to iron A.M. working till noon  Hitch up early AM intending to go to Loxa.  The ground is still covered with snow but it has settled a good deal.  Tue feeling better today than has for some time.  Mostly clear day south to westerly wind.  Gobed 9 P.M. ~~

24.  Friday 6 AM.  Ther.  22.  31.  22.  =  25.
Cloudy light N. wind snow flakes flying  Buy lot of stuff at W.E. Hills AM.  getting trusted for same, 75 cts Writing paper. (Tabs) 25. Envelopes 25.  Pencils 10 per 5 ink 10.  Hitch up and take Tue to R Circle at Will Miles.  Write letters to P.H. & Co. S.H. Co and others AM and  mail PM.  Begins growing colder about 2 P.M.  Weather (?) predicts cold wave.  Ther 16 in  NW.  Light snow flying 2 P.M.  Self not feel well P.M.  Marie & Helen making Fudge at night.  Phebe attended dance with young Miles  Gobed 8 P.M.

25.  Saturday, 6.15, AM.  Ther.  22.  32.  26.  =  26 2/3
Mostly cloudy SE wind later.  Self about sick this morning.  Write for Catalogue to Slack, Chicago.  Deposit half of Garrisons check 25.00 at  2nd Natl.  nobook.  See Charley Talbot and Wm Wayne, AM. Send 10.00 to Theodore Banta for Sayre Family book.  Have talk with traveling man at Charleston Hotel toward night about land.  Cloudy day with south-easterly wind.  Began snowing 6 P.M. from S.E.  There was earthquake Earthquake in St. Louis yesterday morn.  Write C.H. Slack Chicago for grocery Catalogue.  Self feel  badly all day.  Girls all went to entertainment at Normal at night.  Mort and Kate over at night but I had gone to bed.  Had a pain take me in left shoulder about 10 PM which kept me awake most of night, gone in morning  Gobed 8.15 PM

26.  Sunday.  7.15 AM.  Ther  32.  36.  4.  =  24
Cloudy, heavy fog,  SE wind.  About 1 1/2 to 2 in wet snow fell in night.  Pain in shoulder gone this morning.  Cloudy day thawing till say 1 PM. wind southerly till 1 PM then NW and Ther fell to near zero by 9 PM,  I hitch up Queen before dinner but did not use her because of the change  Much of the snow that fell last night melted this afternoon, but had to keep up good fires PM and night and house got very cold before morning strong NW wind PM & night gobed 9 PM.


27. Monday.  5.30 AM  Ther -6.  8.  2.  = 1 1/3  Clear, NW, wind Mrs. Smith came to wash 7 A.M. working till 3 P.M.  Tue and Groves went up to Court (symbol) P.M. to testify in case of Al Latta and wife.  They decide to live together.  Did not hitch up today Am reading Ivanhoe staying most of the time in basement.   Mort and Kate over at night.  Clear cold day with N.W. wind Mrs. S. will iron Wednesday morning  Gobed 9 P.M.  

28.  Tuesday.  5 AM.  Ther  2.  18.  18.  =  12 2/3
Partly cloudy.  S.E. wind.  Made mistake of an hour this morning getting up too early.  Read Ivanhoe in furnance room most of forenoon.  Henry Reasor looks at pump and furnace P.M.  pay him a/c to date $1.05 check.  Did not hitch up today  Was up town P.M.  Get some lease blanks at W.E. Hills and pay him what I owe 75cts.  Learn that Fuquas of Casey have bought N1/2 Mrs. Norfolk place and will build big general store here in the spring.  Partly cloudy day SE wind snow flying at times.  Ferd called at night. Tue over at Grovers till bed time  Gobed 9 PM

29.  Wednesday 6 AM.  Ther  14.  17.  15.  = 15 1/3
Cloudy northwind.  There was about 2 in snow in night apparently from N.E. Mrs. Smith came to iron working until 3 P.M.  Paid her ch 75cts.  Sayre Family book sent for last Sat. comes by express and self and Phebe put in much time looking it over.  Find several errors.  I didn't go up town till after 4 P.M.  Get 25 cts spare ribs at Donschs  Cloudy day NE wind becoming E toward night.  Hail and Snow began abut 4 P.M. and continued an hour or two.  About 1 1/2 in fell.  Gobed 9 P.M.

30.  Thursday.  5.45, AM.  Ther 15.  29.  22. = 20 1/3  Cloudy, N.E. wind.  Still studying Sayre genealogy  Tue not feeling very well.  She has co. P.M.  Mrs. K.  there was about 2 inches snow and sleet last night.  Report sleighing good Marie and Helen went sleighriding (sic.)  at night.  I did not hitch up today Tue feeling badly and went to bed early.  Cloudy day with easterly wind.  Gobed.  9 P.M.

31.  Friday, 6 AM.  Ther, 22,  32,  24.  =  26.
Cloudy, N.W. wind.  There was over an inch of heavy snow last night.  Tue feeling badly this morning but gets up and gets breakfast.  Bert calls a while P.M. half an hour or so I went up town 4 P.M.  Meet JH Marshall at Court H  Republican primaries tomorrow to nominate County Officers  Buy some "birds" of young Dallas.  Pete Drake and Jubal on a "high lonesome"  Pete says will come and work a while tomorrow abut 8 AM.  Mostly cloudy day with NW. wind, variable P.M.  Gray horse has kicked doors down at barn.  It didn't thaw much today even in the sun.  Tue over at Groves at night Phebe gone.  Helen and Marie home  gobed 9 PM~~

Get a letter from N.S. Page this morning
Cloudy and damp: Barely  sprinkles rain all night.  Mrs. Smith came 7 AM. to wash, working till after dinner.  Charley Wiley calls after dinner to see about bottom lot for Carnagie Library.  I start out to Gaines 2.30 P.M.  He changing work with C. Talbot get tickets.  Jo has 14 tickets 334 bu at 56 and 94 5/7 @ 55 = 428 5/7 = 239.14  Garrison pays me rent to 14 inst. check.  Florence Gaines at home sick.  Shirley not quite done shucking corn  Capt Tillotson called P.M. to see me but I was not here.  Grows some cooler before night.  Cloudy day Northerly wind.  Roads good.  Gobed 9 PM

3.  Tuesday, 6.15 AM.   Ther 32.  37.  28  =  32 1/3
Most cloudy N.E. wind.  Simons and Warren did not come in with corn as promised.  I drove down to see how the Col [H. G.] was AM but did not go in.  Hat said he was no better.  Dr. calls it the "Grippe."  Pay Wilton & Tillotson a/c in full 49.75  Tillotson as one of the committee for Park and Carnagie Library asks price of bottom lot south of branch.  They cant use it at our price $3500  Partly cloudy day with NE wind.  Pay Sam Ray for bus and baggage fare  Partly cloudy day with NE wind.  Ferd was here for a while at night.   Gobed 8, P.M.

4.  Wednesday.  6.30 AM.  Ther  24.  30.  20.  =  24 2/3
Partly cloudy.  Eastwind,  Tue and Phebe ironing  Pay JH Pinnell a/c in full to date 7.35 Deposits Garrison check 50.00  Rent to 14 inst  2d National Bank  PriScilla Club here in afternoon.  Talk with I.Winter PM about park and Library.  He is one of committee and does not much like using our lot at price offered.  Stop at Henry Shoots to ask about Col.  Drive down there and him no better.  Phebe and Helen making candy in kitchen at night  John Clark's  daughter studying with Marie.  Mrs. Clark called for her.  Partly clear day with E to NE wind and growing colder  Gobed 9 PM

5.  Thursday. 6 AM.  Ther  18.  30.  22. =23 1/3
Partly cloudy, hazy, Easterly wind, white frost morn.  Tue and self buy some oysters for the Col and start for his house about 9 AM  old mare made break on Madison St breaking up shafts, buy new pair at Wilton & G costs me 3.00  The Col. better this morn.  Gaines came in with part of a load of straw.  Will be in again tomorrow.  Simons and Warren brought two loads corn 60-50 sold to Griffin @ 60.  Shirley brings in Linders check for balance of his corn 776.56  They think there is error somewhere but I fail to find it for certain.  Buy Warrens grey horse for 80.00 and he will bring him up tomorrow or Saturday.  Hannah Marshal here  at night.  Turie over at Groves till bed time.  Light cloudy day E to SE light winds  Farm's returns so far think the farms have yielded in money about same as last year  Gobed 10 PM

6.  Friday.  6.30 AM.  Ther 20.  33.  30.  =  27 2/3
Clear light SE wind.  Self sore throat.  Worse this morn has been coming for several days.  Jo Gaines in with anther small load of straw.  While he was in house his team & was tore off both hind wheels, breaking shaft off at collar.  I spent most of the day trying to find way to fix it and finally order entire new axle through W.&T.   Tue and Helen went down to H.Gs. toward night finding him much better Simons and Warren did not come in with wood.  I figure up Shirley corn tickets for sure getting it about same as Linders check.  Mostly cloudy day E & SE wind.  Phebe attends dance at night with Bres???  Gobed 9 P.M.

7.  Saturday. 6.30 AM.  /ther 30.  39.
Mostly cloudy. Southwind.  Jo came with small load straw taking out four joints of 15 in sewer tile for well at Loxa from Andrews @ 30 c per foot.  I went over to Loxa 11.38 AM returning 1.12 P.M. Settle with JD Linder for balance corn  779.14 Shirley 239.14 Gaines in two checks 777.56 and 240.72  Deposit 777.56 at State Bank KG a/c 240.72 at 2d Natl C.G.  Shirley raised 3663 bushels on about 130 acres.  J.W.Gaines (heard) raised 1373 50/70 bushels partly estimated on about 47 acres.  Warren and Simons brought about cord of wood and grey horse which did not pay for today.  Cloudy day mostly with southerly.  Indications of rain.  Was up town most of PM.  Wilton ordered axle yesterday.  Paid W.M. Scott (Bill)  14.40 Ins. on house and furniture  Cloudy day southwind.  Light rain after dark  Gobed 9.30 P.M.

8.  Sunday.  7 A.M.  Ther.  45.  50.  33.  =  42 2/3
Cloudy and raining. S.E. wind.  Rain began in night.  Stay in house most of day.  Rain much of the time, but light.  It snowed about an inch after dark.  Tue bad pain in side and went to bed early.  Wind swings round to SW and finally to NW  Gobed  9.30 PM

9.  Monday. 6 AM.  Ther.  29.  33.  20 =  27 1/3
Cloudy Northwind light.  Mrs.Smith came to wash 7 AM.  Bill Scott calls again AM.  Mrs. S. works all day. will iron Wed.  Charley Wiley called AM. while I was up town about lot for Library &c.  I didn't see him.  Cloudy with N. to NW wind  The snow did not melt off much.  Should think rain about 3/4 in.  Roads reported muddy.  No word from buggy axle yet  Self not feeling pretty well.  Tue over at Groves till bedtime.  Spend most of the day reading novel "Kidnapped" Mrs S had her boy with her today.  Gobed 9 P.M.

9.  Saturday.  5.40 AM.  Ther  45.  47.  51.  =   47 2/3
Cloudy, foggy, Light showers in night wind South Easterly.  Earl Decker leaves horse in barn.  I sign note with him for 10.00 90 days.  He intends to get married next week.  Alex weighs 8 lb.  Big Alex 10 lb.  The freeze is not not yet out of ground.  Dem and Rep. Tp primaries today and big crowd of men on streets P.M.  Tue called in Dr. Patton to consult.  She has decided to begin doctoring for her trouble and will go to his office tomorrow morning.  She and Clara begin piecing quilt P.M.  I went  up town after supper but could not learn result of the primaries.   Cloudy day with occasional sprinkle rain heavy showers after dark and in night  wind southerly.  gobed 10.30 P.M.

Cloudy S.E. wind. showers last night.  Went with Tue to Pattons after breakfast - first time. A showery morn  Fix stall for brown cow.  Look for calf very soon: The freeze not yet out of ground.  River water very muddy  Cistern pumped dry yesterday.  Clara got letter from Harvey :  first since they left last Wednesday.  Wind changes to N.W. before with snow flurries.  Coal about about out today but didn't need much fire.  Tue feeling better than she expected to after treatment.   Gobed 9 PM.

Partly  cloudy.  Evans sends wood by boy not to bring him cow  Clara didn't wash as usual -Helping Tue sew  Mrs. Owens will wash tomorrow  Get jag coal, Richter put in back Cat.  Mrs. Grove over  P.M. arguing about Mrs. Trobaugh.  Clara sick P.M. and night.  Tue over at Groves at night.  Roads said to be very bad today.  Mostly clear day.  Chilly N.W. wind  Gobed 10 P.M.

12.  Tuesday.  5.40 AM.  Ther.  38.  63. 55=  52.
Mostly clear.  Southerly wind.  Mrs Owens washes AM  Clara helps Tue sew clothesline broke down.  Take Evans pair of sho?es to mend.  Says will take cow and wants her at once.  Take out 20 lbs timothy and clover seed which horses get at  Jo grubbing out willow down near Loxa.  John and Edith there.  they will take cow whose horns have been removed to town tomorrow  I decide to remain all night.  Mostly clear day with violent southwind.  Sleep with Jo in SE corner E room.  Gobed 9 PM.   I went with Tue when she took treatment AM.

13. Wednesday.  4.30 AM.  Ther.  43.  40.  36.  =  37 2/3
Cloudy SW wind.  Turns colder in night.  Jo was up before 3 AM.  Cow very gentle and  they lead her to town leaving her at Evans' AM.  Put calf in my barn  Brown cow no calf yet.  Udder seems to be caling and I milk her twice in PM.  Clara ironing.  Maggie went to Champaign for a few days visit.  I took her to 11.38 AM. train.  Kate went with Kate Grove  to Prescilla Club meet at Dr. Starr's.  Snow flurries during day.  Mostly cloudy, eith high winds S.W.  Take Ferd down to his Grandma's toward night.  Play cinch with Phebe Marie and Clara till bedtime.  10.30 PM.

14.  Thursday 5.30  AM.  Ther.  34.  34.  32.  =  33 1/3
Cloudy west wind snowing-light- house pretty cool- no coal in the cellar.    Tue has a bad spell after breakfast.  Pay Clara Fisher 4.55 fo C. Pinatil furnace repairs last fall.  Brown cow has yellow male calf AM. other calf eats corn and oats all night - consider it weaned.  Clara went to du?tesls P.M.  Cloudy day with  frequent snow flurries westerly wind  Didn't go up town  Play cinch at night with Tue and girls.  House has been cool today.  No coal in the cellar, about half inch snow at night.  Gobed 10 P.M.

15.  Friday 5.40 AM.  Ther  30.  33.  26  =  29 2/3
Cloudy, N.W. wind.  Learn on street that Wall has sold out his saloon to Casey party.  Have not seen him.  Dr. Patton came down and gave Tue treatment says he is going away for a week.  Clara get letter from her mother, first since they left.  Trobough carries coal down cellar.  Didn't settle with him.  I call to see Evans milk the cow let him horn: seems to be all right.  Mort and Kate were over at night.  Phebe to dance with Ben Hill.  Gobed 10 PM. -

16.  Saturday.  5.40  AM.  Ther.  21.   45.  36.  =  34
Clear N.W. wind.  Evans sends word before breakfast to take cow away says will keep her two or three months if can milk her.  Mrs. E. has got scared.  Bandy takes cow to milk A.M.  Dick Wright calls P.M. and will work for me Monday.  Get another 1/2 j Hillsborrough Coal of Richter P.M. which they deliver at barnyard.  Pay up Bandy for butter.  Went with Tue to Patton's office for treatment 4 P.M.  Clara away at night taking bird.  Mort and Kate over at night.  I drove up town after supper calling at Evan's for shoes which didn't get.  Self not feel very well today.  Mostly clear day streets not bad and drying  fast Gobed 10 PM.

17. Sunday.  6.15 AM.  Ther 31.  44.  46.  = 47.

Clear.  Tue feeling badly this morning.  Dr. Patton called to say he was going away to he gone about a week.  I  made some small repairs on harness and clean up buggy some.  Slept a while after dinner.  Hitched up Queen before noon.  Toward night drove south of town and round town some streets getting good some heavy in country.  Clear day, Southerly wind.  Very pleasant and many people out riding and walking.  Tue and Clara telling snake stories at night  Gobed 10 PM

18.Monday 5.30 AM.  Ther 45.  72.  57.  =  58
Clear.  SW wind.  There was an alarm of fire in night.  Mrs. Owens washed AM.  Fix up clothes line.  Tue feeling badly all day.  She went over to Grove's at. Dick Wright did not come as promised.  Learn he is sick.  Partly cloudy day with strong sw wind and warmest we have had for several months  Play cinch at night with Clara and Marie Gobed 10 PM

19.  Tuesday.  5.30 AM.  Ther.      57  54
Cloudy sprinkles rain .  Strong southwind I start to Gaines 9 AM.  Find him grubbing on Tue's north  twenty.  John and wife still there.  He asks permission to stay two months which I didn't grant. Get home  for dinner.  Shirley has cut a few stalks south of house.  Roads good all the wau.  Brought Gaines clock again for repairs.  Clara finished ironing.  I went up town for coffee at night.  Mort and Kate over at night  Tue wuit taking medicine and feels some better  Cloudy day with frequent light showers.  Lightning after dark  Gobed 10 PM.

20.Wednesday 5.30 AM.  Ther  30.  28.  26  =28
Cloudy high SW wind.  Got telephone message from Gaines that white hourse was choked.  Thought to go out but too cold.  Learn at night that horse was all right.  Talk with Garrison at night.  He paid me Wall's rent for month ending today.  Got letter from AL & T. Co. saying couldn't loan on City R.E. but could do so on Loxa farm.  One of  worst days this mo.  Strong westwind with light snow.  Self and Tue feeling badly and both retire early.  Phebe out at night  Gobed 8 AM.

Mostly cloudy strong west wind.  Dick Wright works 7.30 AM. to 5 PM.  Down cellar in stable and at woodpile.  Tue gets special Del. letter from Maggie saying she would be home Saturday and sent her dress and other things by Express.  Charlotte Sproule called AM.  :pis and Pauline Shortess here P.M.  Mostly cloudy day with NW wind and snow flurries.  Self feel badly toothache &c.  Didn't eat dinner.  Go bed 7.15  AM.  Write letter of inguiry to AL. & T Co. 24
