Clear NE wind.  Drove with Tue and Marie out to Emmett Glasco place  getting a basket of  large lepiota,  L. Morgani Poison same as I thought made me sick several weeks ago.    Try some for dinner and no bad effects.  Father also ate more than self with no unpleasant effect  To day has been rather warm  The last lots of cecropias are spinning    Nine of the lots began Sat.  Trade rather quiet for Monday, clouds up toward night with some signs of rain but clear off.  Wind N.E.  Maggie spent night with Maunie Lang.  Gobed 1030

Mostly cloudy. E. wind.  Over slept ourselves this A..M.  Drive up to timber getting fine mess of  A. abruplus.  Gave some to Bill Hill some to Nick   Jack Colby thinks Bill Decker will get money of home party to buy my land next week.  Saw Bill and he seems hopeful.  Very heavy thunder shower and rain 1 PM till 3 P.M.  I slept through most of it and did not get up town to get plows  left at Pugho for sharpen.   It cleared off toward night.  Jo Walton pays 50.00 rent up to Sept 10 check.  Drove with Tue around town awhile after dark.  Gobed  11.30 P.M.     [shorthand]

Fair start for timber at 8.30 after buying some more wire.  Got there about 11 AM.  R. & S. clearing other boys make fence.   Warren hurt finger and did not work PM.  Bob about sick and not rushing very much.    Gobed 9 PM

Mostly clear S. wind.  Bob hauls out lumber in morning.  Warren hauls load of slats to town.  Enoch Johnson began at noon working with fence gang.  Fire got out about noon and we had warm work to stop it.  R & S clearing doing good job making wood.  Warren brought down 3 reels of wire and some other things  I start home about 4.30 P.M. leaving for all hands to cut brush tomorrow.  Got home  7.30  found Tue feeling much worse and all in bed but Father.  The cow came home herself today.  Pleasant day and  S.  wind, brisk.    Roads dry all the way.  Gobed 8.30

Fair - smokey.  Tue not feeling so well this AM.  Phebe coughed and vomited in the night and is about sick in the morning.  Sent for Patton who prescribed for both.  Meddy made Phebe sick all day.  I made a rake to use in clearing.  Oil and clean on buggy P.M.  Grows colder toward night.  Went up town  about dark to get some meat &c.   Mrs. Davis over after dark.  Warren Decker hauls Taggart 1/2 cd wood.  Paid John Kink 6.00 on ties.  Uncle John in to dinner.  Hen has gone again taking a good horse, they found the horse however say he will let us have all on a post office checking as soon as we get a place for them.  Paid Riley and Steve Decker up in full.  Plant in hot bed some yellow and red tomatoes.  Tue looking better at night.  Gobed 9 PM.

Foggy, clears off before noon.  Tue feels badly yet but appetite some better.  Made another rake for use in brush.  finish getting buggy for trip tomorrow.  Drove with girls down to Kickapoo for some elm bark for Tue.  Tue feeling badly all day.  Kate Myers was over toward night.  Gobed 8:45 PM  N.E. wind toward night.

Cloudy, wind about E.  Began to sprinkle  about 6.30  AM.  Tue complains of feeling some better this morning.  Baby had some fever all night.  Rain most of AM. heavy for an hour or two,  thunder afternoon.  Tell Bill Hill  to order me  2 bush orchard grass seed @ 1.40.  Got some old cloth over store for hot bed.  Bought some pea and radish seed  at Ben Mitchell's.  Pay Sam Ray 15.00 which leaves 83.85 still due.  Cloudy all day.  Baby was sick all day  having light fever.  Tue good deal better but still bad cough.   Gobed 9 PM.  Wind N.E.

Mostly clear. S.E.2.  A gouty tac on left kept me awake most  of night.  I get load small nut coal.  Tower Hill.  AM. 2960 lbs. am out and this is the first.  Tue gets letter from Buddy.  I get Winters to order hat for me. buy pair of Henson gloves 1.25 all Cr.  Talk with Harry Messeck.  He  has sownC.h. of phosphate borrowing drill of Max Gorffin.  I went P.M. out to Reeds for Peaches.  Mrs. R. says not ripe yet.  I continue on stopping at Sander's.  Get three chickens  of Mrs. S. paying 1.00  Think too much.  Got home 6 P.M.  Mostly clear day with strong southwind.  I made pot mush after supper.  Go bed 9.

Clear S.2.  Rhoda came washing and ironing.  I drove down E. of Normal.  Get a few puff balls.  Helen Ferrish and George here to dinner.  John F.  is sick.  I did not see Ad. Miller except at long range.  Get shave Br. P.M.  After 3 P.M. I drove to town line.  There are few fungi coming.  I return by Watson road which they are plowing and scraping today.  Talk again with H. Missick.  He has sown car of rock Ph.  Get home  6 P.M.  Tue and Mrs. Brooks attend prayer meeting at night.  Most clear day S.4.  Go bed 9 PM

Clear.  Cow refused to give us any  milk this morning and had probably been milked.  Clean out  part of bookcase and burn up lot of trash.  Talked of going out to Uncle John's with Tue after dinner but Mrs. Robinson came over after dinner and we gave it up.  Tue and I pick the peaches left in garden and balance of the grapes.  Mow grass for cow at night - father has lame leg.  Go bed 9 PM~~

24. Monday.  5.30 AM.  Ther.  49.  72.  55.

Clear.  Got started  at 8 oc.  took a saddle down today and after dinner rode all over south part of timber.  Four men at work AM. five P.M.  Enoch Johnson began again at noon.  Brown hauling rails in P.M.    Mrs. Brown rode home with me.  Mrs. Dickenson washed today.  Tue suffering from tooth ache.  Gobed 9.15 PM.

Cloudy S.10.4.  There were light showers in night.  (.08).  Bill came and worked till 4 P.M.  Pay  him full to date check 4.45.  He put cord of wood in cellar.    Is expecting to cut corn next week and will return to finish up my work.  Helen went home 3 P.M. Bill washes off wheels AM.  Tue irons P.M.  Late I drove E. to Huckaba road getting home after six.  Mont was over while after supper.  Will begin my work coming week when finish at Normal.  Cloudy day with N.W. 4 wind and some light showers P.M.  Gobed 9.

Cloudy.  NW.2.  Tue slept rather late.  Later went to church.  Fire in furnance in order this morn, and keep same all day.  We had cornbread for dinner the first lately.  I grated the corn.  (?)  4 PM.  I drive S round by the old Atkins road getting home 6 PM.  I got caught in a thin shower coming home, not enough to wet me.  It was a cold drive.  Boys play football day on Library lot and are getting to be a nusance.  Part clear day, overcast at night.  Go bed 9 P.M.

Clear.  NW2.  We are about out of coal.  Andrews will deliver us load tomorrow morn.  Tue wrote Phebe.  I drove up before noon getting steak at Dorsch's order pair of pants.  C.
E. Tates.  Will get suit.  He took order on the street as I don't feel able to go up to shop.  Tue and I go to Loxa 1.30 getting home 6 P.M.  Went N. road took basket of pears to Charley J.  Drove up through place and over much of pasture going out NE gate and through Loxa again.  Hariman and  and Cox are up at "other place" at work.  Saw signs of light frost in cornfields, very  light.  has done no plowing for me.  Has cut some corn near A Moores and along E(?)  E of BC shed.  We found pasture all right and lots of young grass just starting.  Cliff said it was ll dead.  Cliff also said we could not  drive S. from BC sh in a/c fallen B.C.  The BC looks well and will soon do to cut.  Tue looked over house.  The expected tenant one Hite has not shown up.  Clear mostly, moderate N.W. wind.  Heavy cloud smoke S.E. all P.M. supposed in oil region.  Helen came before we got home.  She and Tue spent eve. at Groves.  gob 9

Cloudy.  Pretty heavy dash of rain in the night above midnight.  Roads some muddy near town.  NO rain down in timber.  4 min at work.  Pleasant day  Gobed 9 PM.

21.  Friday  5.45  AM  Ther.  60.  85.  66.

Partly cloudy.  Dash of rain early in morn before day.  Start  to timber 8 1/2 AM.  Big Rep. rally in town today.  Three men work 3/4 day today heavy wind came up from N. about 2 1/2 P.M.  Men quit at 3 PM. and I started home rained all the way, was constantly meeting wagons on way home from speaking.  I came home by Diona road.  Rains till in the night heaviest rain for several weeks.  I  walked over on South ridge today looking for board trees.  Go bed 8.30 P.M.

Mostly cloudy morning and day.  Went down to timber.  No men at work today.  This  was day for Commisioners to look at proposed changes in road and they were promptly on hand after looking over the ground they agree to let me change the road as c(?) stated.  I started home about 3 P.M.  Gather about bushel of butternuts on the way home.  Roads muddy.Stream not up any.  I looked round throughly for road to come out of middle hollers and I think I found a place.  Tue put in day putting up fruit mash peaches clear at night and cooler  gobed  9 PM.

September 3 - 8, 1888 in Charleston, Illinois

Clear.  At timber all day.  Bob hauling iyt lumber 5 men work on N. ridge .  Went down to  mill yard with Bob.  He has most of best lumber out.  Clear and pleasant.  Fire  old  oak stub which fell toward night nearly catching some of men.  Go home at 7 P.M.  Gobed 9.30 P.M.

Clear and pleasant.  Very warm in timber.  Went down early and remain all day  5 men at work mostly in second hollow and ravines.  Some of them have to thresh tomorrow and cannot work.  Been chewing some for a day or so.  Don't feel pretty well.  Get home about 7 P.M.  Gobed 9 P.M.  Johnny Decker and self  got basket grapes.

Clear and cooler.  Went down to timber early.  Nobody at work or clearing today.  Took Bob down lot of groceries 2.20.  the boys are all threshing.  Riley Eastin making boards near old mill site.  Wander round till 3 P.M. start home.  Marshall Walker stops me while to talk about road.  Get home 7 P.M.  Get basket crab apples.

Clear and pleasant day.  5 men at work along N. side of clearing.  Have about decided to put in wheat on all I can plow.  Wm Walker stops me in the morning to talk about road.  The cow did not come home tonight.  Bob Brown fixes hill and begins hauling boards out of bottom.  Decide to  build my sheep barn west of house and he will pile rest of material there.  Get home 7.  Gobed 9.30

Clear and very sultry AM.  Clouds up good deal before noon and sprinkle rain several times P.M.   Five men at work N. side clearing till noon finishing the sprouting for present.  Work in road P.M. burning brush and sprouting.   Threatens rain but passes off with nothing but sprinkle.  Lost whip today, but Harrison Muller found it for me.  Riley Easton working on board tree on N. hillside.   Cow not home yet got home 7.10 P.M.  Gobed 9. PM.  Mrs. K pays rent for Aug.

Clear and warm start for timber at 7.30.  Two men at work  Oce and Steve work till noon.  Leave word with Riley Decker that don't need Oce any longer.  Bob cleans out spring in afternoon.  I started home at 3.30 (?) pays Tue 2.00 today.  Got half bushel of potatoes  there at night.  Cow has not come home yet.  Sell Ezekeil Eastin 900 boards @ 50.  He is to pay in hauling.  Tue and children  went up town at night to hear band.  Gobed 8.30

Clear.  E.2.  Soon clouds up.  Roy came 7 AM.  Get mare shod at Dibert.  Jethoo  Evans phones that my Perkins lot is eligible for PO site.  He calls later.  I ask 120 0 dollars for my lot.  Jethro 4000.  Glascos 5.000.  The Paris man has not reported theron.  Says  will employ Cafer to arrange matters.   Can't find key to box* deeds and try unsuccessfully for hour or two  to open it  think Tue has same.  Get letter  from Buddy AM date 4 inst.  Roy spades for three rows of potatoes and after we began to plant them.  It began light  rain at noon and continued  (too light to read) We  quit at 2  P a/c the rain.  Roy and self plant one row potatoes and rain stopped us at 2 PM.  Jethro Evans came again toward night and I sign contract with him and JW Glasco to sell my part of S.W. 1/4 of block for P.O.  building putting in hands of Judge Cafer at 2% com on purchase price.  Pay Evans 2.00 my share plat.  Tue got home about 6 P.M. having been gone since May 21.  Morty came over soon after she arrived but did not stay long.  Mostly cloudy with strong easterly and light rain at times mixed with hail most of P.M.  Gobed 9 P.M.

*I have this old tin box full of legal papers.I have always wondered why there is just a hole where the lock and latch should be.  Now I know the story of the Deed Box.  This is what is so fun about the journal, it answers many questions.

Clear.  Very heavy dew nearly frost.  Took Sam, Ray's white pony and ride down to R.R. then down to timber getting back at 7.30 P.M.  About as tired as could be.  Caught more cold.  Saw the timber pretty thoroughly today.  Kinks ties suit me pretty well.    Wes Decker gives us leave to move in his fence to get to road out.  Told him he could have all the wood he needed.  The saw mill has moved out.  I went by  Handly Ford and return by Walker's.  Gobed 9.30 P.M.

March 20-21, 1888 in Charleston, IL

Dark cloudy morning W. wind.  Rutherford called while we were eating breakfast.  Makes batch yeast.  Snider stopped an hour or two in P.M. having been at Mattoon.  Wils Goodman buys a cord of wood.  Rutherford Bros. call at night to see about going down to timber.   It began to snow about dark.  about an inch fell.  Dark cloudy day with SW wind.  Sat up reading till 12 oclock Wrote to Uri.

Clear.  Fresh NW wind.  Tue  made the fire.  About an inch of snow fell on the ground this morning.   Clayton (?) me for  Glump wood 1.50.  Sell half cord to man with hay rack, also i/2 to Ike Fisher.  Hat was down in afternoon.  Cold  raw day, strong W. wind, freezing in shade all day.  Growing colder in afternoon.  Cover up hot bed with carpets.  Gobed 9.30

Cloudy.  Noble called before breakfast to see about township lumber.  Start for timber at 11 A.M. and leave them about 2 pic(?)  couldn't find any body who wanted to go with me, so went alone.  John Snider brought up load of old lumber.  Which Crass and pile after I got home.  Tue and W.S.G. get bed down stairs.  Fair day lightly cloudy and but little wind.  Met Easton, Decker and Snider when went down.  Baby not well has cried good deal during the night all this week.  go Bed 10 p.m.

Clear N.W.  Drove to Frank Blach's to get him to clean up furnace &c.  Not at home.  Tue sweeping and cleaning up.  We are needing painter and plumber.  I try to build hot fire in furnace.  I say I can't burn that Pana coal in it and keep house from freezing.  Helen called and she with Muggs and Tue left for town leaving me to handle Alfred.  He came about dark to do chores.  Pay him 30 cts which is 30c. more than he has earned.  Clear day  moderate northerly winds.  I met John Glassco  up town.  He does not wish to buy Perkins lot.  Bel Scott called P.M.  Bill Decker wants to saw off the timber.  Gobed 8.30

Mostly cloudy.  Mrs. Dickenson ironed T. G. Chambers died this morning.  Start for timber 8.30 with Tom Knock, look over old lumber sold load to P. Snider.  Tom shot two squirrels and a rabbit.  Bill Brown visiting Bob.  We got home just before dark.  Found Comer here, been to Mattoon, didn't get any bills.  Wants me to  carry job of switch ties till January.  Easton begins hauling my wood to house.  C. not well at night;  Gobed 9 P.M.

Clear, No Frost.  Took pants down to  Lauder Shop to be altered.  Riley Decker makes a grand kick about wood which he cut.  Have decided to pay the balance balance rather than bother any more.  Write  again to Densay about Apples.  Get ready to go timber after dinner was going to vol but he has hurt his leg again`.  Roberts says he will go with us tomorrow and see about making some ties.  Drove  a while with P.M.  Go bed, 10.30 PM

Cloudy, S.W.1   Heavy rains toward morning .70 to 7 AM.   Feel badly but hitch before noon.  Tue went to church AM. and got  R.H.  I put 2 chicks  in crib last night.  It clouds off before noon after light showers (02) and mostly clear PM. with SW.2.  I drive 3.30 P.M. E.going to timber Ashmore road returning by south road before 6 P.M. not a sign of fungi in woods.  Tue went church at night with Mrs. Brooks.  Roads not much muddy 8.30

Cloudy.  Uncomfortable night.  Mosquitoes are getting pretty bad.  Tue paid Mrs. Wentz, milk & cream bill from Apl 1 to  Sept. 1. Ca. 2.00.  I find this was all settled  yesterday, however.  Bim was down while eating dinner.  Says Uncle John's horse which was sick last Sunday died that night.  Rec. letter from Geo. Curriens offering to trade residence in Mattoon for timber.  Dr. J.C. Hall pay  up $1.75 says is going to California.  Will Hall , M.D. says will move to Washington (?) soon.  New Clock runs too fast , try to regulate it at night.  Buy Mutton at Mason's at night.  Looked like rain  today, but didn't.  Bring down Gal MVM for E. at night.  Go bed  10 P.M.

Part clear.  Didn't sleep well in night.  Phebe had spell of vomiting in night.  Drive down to see M. Comer fore noon.  Sictton went with me.  Get home before 1 P.M.  Comer thinks he will be up this week.  Thinks will not entirely lose use of eye..  Very dusty.  Many people going to camp meeting, this being  the last day.  Ed Eastin still sick.  Tue and children up there and to Davis' toward night.  Kate Davis over while evening.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Mostly clear.  Start for timber at 7.30.  Look over Decker's wood not very good.  Walk round over Timber on S. side.  Met Milt Drake who says he is going to move to town.  Went down when preparing for mill.  It will be some days before they get ready to  saw any.  Got a  letter from Rev Currans of Mattoon who wants to buy timber land.  Didn't eat any dinner today.  Took dinner but saved it for supper.  Got home before dark.  Comer has not yet found water for his mill.  Has dug two wills.  Warm night- gobed 8.30 PM.

31  Wednesday,  6.30  AM.  Ther.  67.  88.  70.
Mostly clear.  Walk down to new school house staying there most of forenoon.  Ed Eastins sick abed.  Clear day very dry and dusty.  Wind E. big whirlwind passed south of branch.  Talk with D. Stoddert P.M.  H.G. again wants to rent room.  Speak to G H Jeffries about selling timber land.  Comer said the other day he was willing I should sell.  Gobed 8.30 PM.

Write letter to Geo.Currens reguard to timber offer land offer $2800 , timber alone $2000.  Start up town about 10 AM.  Met Ray and Johnston.  Say Comer had his eye  put out this AM.  Find him at Dr. Steelles office.  He went home about noon feeling very badly.  Get clock at Ricketts for 15.00.  Mill Carman brought in -  down but did not get it fixed satisfactorily.  Gave City bill to Tooker  1237 ft = 18.55  Ruth Davis down in P.M.  Pacify Jo Dikob about clock trade.  Tue puts up some  grapes.  Go bed.  9.30 P.M.

Cloudy, N.W. wind.  Talk with Hibbard about taking out accident policy.  Went down to timber PM getting back 6.30.  Comer moving his engine.  Men have begun digging well with poor prospect for water.  Bob Brown has moved into house on North side.  This has been  cloudy and the coolest for many  months.  Buy chicken at Wrights.  Gobed.  10 PM

Partly Clear, rain with thunder till about 12 last night.  Start for  timber at about 7.30 with H.G.  Stayed round Mill till nearly noon.  Drake and Johnson working there.  Ate dinner in South Hollow near mill site.  Met Comer on way home (?) five mile house.  Get back at 5.30 P.M  John Fields paid Tue $2.00 being part on  a/c for cull lumber 90c still due.  Learn of R.R. accident at Chatework (Chatsworth).  Couldn't get paper.  Pay Wright in full grocery a/c $1.10.  Got pretty well tired out today.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Clear, S..  Old mare shows contact with barbed wire with deep scratch twelve inches long on rump.  Dr. it with spavin cure at once.  Things seem somewhat demoralized out in barnyard.  Think stray horse has been around at night.  Tue complaining gooddeal (sic.).  Think the hot weather.  Part cloudy with showers around.  .  Just sprinkle here.  Not many in for Sat.  Harve McNeel said would tighten up my furnace, but he didn't.  I try to find Ike Rogers but couldn't.  I drove SW late P.M.  finding no fungi.  Go bed 10 P.M.

P.M. signs of rain during day.  Thunder west at night but didn't rain any.  Buy cheese .15 and butter .40 all cr.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Clear N.E.1.  The rats have begun to use my trap again.  W.H. Taft was renominated for president last night at Chicago.  After getting R. Herald drove east to Timber.  Thought to find some mushrooms but nothing coming.  I got home about noon.  Parker called P.M. will fix Loxa floor in morning.  Mort and Kate came over P.M. first time for several weeks.  They have both been sick.  Later I drive W +S.W.  getting home before dark.  Mostly clear day.  Light N. E. winds .  Crops are looking well.  Corn small for time of season.  It has to cold for corn.  Gravel roads fine.  Dirt roads dry but pretty rough.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Clear N.W. wind.  Crass didn't come as promised.  Drove down to Young's after my scythe.  Hunt H.G. up to see about short lumber, says he will take it.John Rice re set mares shoes.  Pay him for it 80c.  Caren near setting premises on fire burning some  weeds on hillside.  Whole family out to fight it.  Mrs. Link called P.M.  Mrs. Davis helping Tue sew afternoon.  Drove with M. + P.round town after supper.  Chew tobacco yesterday and today: have quit  Gobed 10.15

Part cloudy S.W.3.  The rain last night measured one inch.  None fell after 9 P.m.  I was born seventy years ago today.  I have received a straw hat and a pocket knife.  I got the paper.  Tue and Phebe went to church.  I drove E to timber getting home about noon.  Toward night drive via J.B. Hills to town line returning by Watson's.  Dirt roads quite muddy.  Think more rain north.  I call at Emmetts.  Will work for me tomorrow.  Has lost my spade fork.  Saw Nick in passing.   Part cloudy day moderate W. wind, becoming light southerly at night.  Mrs. Knock here till 9 P.M.  Gobed 10.30

Thursday,  6.30 AM  Ther  60.  80.  64

Cloudy, was clear early.  Got a baquet  for breakfast this being my 45 birthday.  Buy 5 1/2 yards matting to put in hall, cr. at Chambers $1.92.  School committee go to Chicago  to see about new school house.  Delia concludes to quit  Saturday.  Council meet tonight, but did not act on the pitch for license.  Put in a/c against City for lumber to date $14.50.  Take a lot more silkworms up town.  They don't seem to be doing well.  Mostly clear day with N.W. wind.  Got letter from Mary Sayre mostly about Aunt C. & Geo.* Go bed 10 P.M.  Father** and self went after hedges to Anderson's.

*Aunt Charity and Uncle George Wade- Charity was my Gr-gr-grandmother's sister.  This couple was very dear to Charles and Keturah.
