November 1890

1.  Saturday 7 AM.  Ther  33  60  50

Clear SW wind.  Warren and John here before I got up.  Went right to work at hog house and got sided and roof on by 3 PM.  Uncle John here to dinner. Gang up from timber and settle with most of them   Good many in town   and politics main talk on streets.  Dem com - strikes for money at night but got none   Tue not very well.  Clear or mostly so with SW or W wind light sprinkle rain about 10 Pm  Buy load of corn of Harvey Brown 16 10/70 bu.  $6.75  Good many fellows loaded tonight  Go bed  11.30 P.M.

2.  Sunday  8 AM.   Ther 49.

Clear W wind fresh.  Children went to SS Turie to church start to Ranch after dinner getting there before supper, cool raw day  with NW wind.  gobs  8 PM.

3.  Monday.  6 AM.  Ther.

Cloudy morning with NW wind spitting hominy snow.  John and I try to to lookout N and W lair near NW corner.  Rile and Johnny  beginning clearing on west line NW of west field have decided to fence the Fritz hollow.  Warren finishes  hauling out lumber from old mill sites  Start home about 2 P.M.  Try to get some squirrels and quail on road home but fail  Gobed 1030 ~~ 

November 1901

1.  Friday I took a walk North east to South getting very tired AM.  I got a rig at livery stable in afternoon and Mary and I drove  over  to "North west" on west shore, returning before night.  Close cloudy muggy day but not very warm. Self felt badly all day.

2.  Saturday.  Maria called before noon and took self and Aunt Maria around town a while.  Maria and Fahys left for New York P.M.  Raw NW windy day   We drove to Whitney's and up near Stand Pipe

3.  Sunday.  Bright pleasant cool day.  Got a rig till noon driving east of SH and over on neck for last time as intend to leave for Geneva tomorrow morning.  Charley drove with me PM going to ocean at Bridgehampton and afterward to Fahy's house on the neck.  Charley with dog call at night.  C & I return Bricklyn road. 

April 2, 1913 in Charleston, Illinois

2.  Wednesday.  5.15.  AM.  Ther.  54.  78.  66.  = 66.
Most cloudy  wid S.4.  There was good deal lightning and thunder about 2.30 AM. No rain.  Ray came late doing chores and helping hitch up.  He went up town with me holding horse while I pay taxes at Courthouse.  Total for Charleston 110.06 Paid Larry Wright J/P Col.  Get letter of 31st. from Tue  per carrier 9 AM. was  intending to start home today under date of Monday.  Agent here says trains not running farther than Lawrenceville yet.  Gus brought us doz. eggs.  The election went entirely dem.  I drive west 4 P.M.  to Shannon cross road N. to N. Mat. road to Huffman Lane N. to  Tp line and back to town by lane E. of Stoddert place about nine miles.  Saw no muddy road but very rough dirt.  Gravel roads are good.  Stodderts have cut most of their timber. past winter.  Dr. Patton has also been thinning out timber and cutting back brush in his big pasture.  Harness broke near Cemetery Cottage but get her stopped without damage.  Mostly clear day with violent wind, southerly.  I ate supper which was pretty hard work lay down sleeping til 9.30 whew gobed.

31.  Saturday.  6.15 AM.  Ther.  42.  60.  54.

Clear, wind N.E.  Throat better after 2 AM.  Felt very bad in morning but seems to be improving. Seph finished hauling 200 posts to Mrs. Linder.  I was up town all day, and am told my prospects am as good as can expect.  Uncle John was in and is doing me good out in the country as is John Snider.  It is said the Dems. are pretty bad scared all round.  Cool morning but cooler  but warmer P.M.  Clear day and drying fast.  Milt Drake was up in afternoon and appeared to be drunk.  Bob Brown agrees to pay me $2.50 for house in timber from Mar. 1.  Go bed 9.30

April 1888

1.  Sunday, 6.30.  Ther.  54.  79.  64.

Clear, some smokey.  My throat was better last night.  Think  a few small doses of salacin taken yesterday helped it.  Pleasant warmer day with  fresh SW wind.  Went to town with intention of going down to timber but gave it up.  Trim up  groffaer(?) in garden.  Tue went out to country  after dinner.  The girls went walking and W.S.G. stayed with baby.   There is a good deal of politics on the street today if it is Sunday.  Clouds up toward night lightening in N.  Gobed 9.30 PM.

2.  Monday. 6 AM.  ther.  42.  57.  42.

Pleasant day mostly clear.  Northerly wind.  Trying  to electioneer all day.  Went down to broom factory* and railroad.  Think  prospects for election pretty good.  Got pretty well tired out.  Buy ham at Bill Meyers on Cr.  Gobed 10 P.M.

*I believe this was located on what is now W. Vine Street which is N of  town.  I understand in later years it was owned by the Vaughn family.  Thank you to Brenda Mills for this information.
