July 3-4, 1913 and 1888

1913

3.  Thursday,  5.30 AM.  Ther.  76.  92.  84.  =  84.
Clear. S.E.1.  gs.  Get start for Loxa before 8 AM.  Met Steam Threshing out near Jo Reats.  I drive through Loxa about 9.30.  Met Florence Gaines.  I took in whole farm.  Things looking better than average farm this year.  Paul with Cox and a hand were plowing corn S.E. of house.  Charley Jones paid 5.00 Oakley rent.  Charley will renew my sub. to R.H.  I get home 12.30.  Part cloudy, fresh south wind.  Get Ben Oats at I.B.M. at late P.M.  Tue over at Groves at night.  Jim Turner died last night.  No word from Emmett and letting work go for the present.  Gobed 9.30

4.  Friday.  5.30 AM.  Ther.  74.  92.  82.  =  82 2/3
Clear.  S.3.  Get shave at Browns after breakfast, paid 30 c.  So much  firing in vicinity that don't hitch up till about noon.  Old mare and Jack dog kind of crazy about fire crackers.  However I took them both out P.M. without accident.  I drove out by Al Latta's place return by Helen's in time for supper big crowds have gone to the park today and to Mattoon.  Phebe and Fern went over to Mattoon on 2.30 P.M. car.  Part cloudy with sp. rain about 3 P.M.  Emmett phones that will work tomorrow if I want him.  Gobed 10

1888

3.  Tuesday,  5.30 AM.  Ther.  75.  93.  78.
Clear.  Baby sick this AM.  Tue sends for Dr.   Bill Kelly works all day for me.  (?) out washes windows, &c.  (?) hauls down load of old lumber.  hat here P.M.  Give up keys to Miss Kemayer P.M., she signs lease dated July 4th.  Still have skylight and some other things to fix.  Myers came up in morning and makes lots of promises about rent, pays Tue $1.00.  Tomorrow he will owe balance 3.12 and rent for July 6.00.  Looks like rain at night.  Lightning in N.  Sultry day and night. Tue and baby sleep downstairs until after midnight.  Think baby better.  Gobed 10 PM.

4.  Wednesday,  5.30 AM.  Ther.  74.  94.  73.
Mostly clear.  Very few people in town today.  Kirk & Co.up with Tess say they are going to quit.   Have put out 120 the last time went down to H RR () Kirk & Co count them.  Paid them $11.00 in full.  Girls celebrate with fire crackers.  Baby better.  Rain storm at night with some wind N. about 9 P.M.  Cooler at night, gobed 9 PM.

October 10, 1912 in Charleston, Illinois

10, Thursday, 6 AM  Ther.  66.  74.  64. = 68.
Mostly cloudy.  S.2.  It began to rain 7 AM and continued to drizzle til P.M. (.45) meas. at 2 P.M.  Guy Anderson called AM and says will plaster the room tomorrow P.M.  I didn't hitch up til 3 P.M. drove out toward Al Latta's.  The roads are quite muddy and prospect of more rain.  There was much heavy thunder this morn with the rain.    Tue had  Alfred here P.M.  He did not do much.  John Parker called 5 P.M. and settle for P&P work at farm.  Pay check 60.40 in full and think quit.  Grace Sefton here to supper and Tue and Muggs went home with her until 10 P.M.    Took  mare to Nickles.  Gobed 9

18,   Wednesday, W.2.  Ther.  56.  68.  52.  =  58 2/3
Part Cloudy, W.2.  Tue makes arrangements with Helen by phone and starts for Mattoon on 9 car.  It began to rain light about 10.30 AM.  I had just got hitched up.  Let water in furnace and find it leaks badly.  Phone Fred.  I drive S.W. three  or four miles starting 2 P.M.  Saw several cutting B.C.  Drove round by J.W. Pierceys returning by Al Latta's getting home 4.30.  Tue came at 5.  She with Helen ate dinner at Louise's.  It clears off at night.  Tue attended prayer meet night gobed 9.

7,  Saturday  5.30  AM.  Ther.  70.  92.  76  =   79 1/3
Clear. S.1.  The authorities have made great improvement in 5th St. back of us.  Several men still working on Library lot cutting and hauling off the hay.Think there is about half a larn of it.  ~  I drove down to plant three times today getting ice last time.  Pay Geo Shriver yest. for repairing roof 32.25  think rather steep - the repairs.  Parker called and I  make payment on work at Loxa, 30.00 check.  Harman called a few moments  Wants to engage corn at 42c.  Today about as hot as usual    Clear A.M.  Threatens rain 4 to 5 P.M. with thunder N.  No rain here.  Tue got letter from Phebe at Chicago.  I drove S.W. by Johnstown road returning by Al Latta's before dark.  Gobed 9.30
