November 2 - 16, 1913 in Coles County Illinois

Readers, I have been so busy  that I have not been able to keep the journal up.  I have thought of abandoning this project, but I do enjoy sharing it.  In order to get it caught up I will only put in key points until I get caught up.  If you want to know more about something, please, just send me a message.

November 1913

2.  Sunday.    Maggie came about 2:30 P.M.  She passed through here on noon big four train got off at Loxa and made a crazy trip home mostly on foot.  Maggie has to leave for Jeff City at 3:40 so stayed up till nearly midnight.  

3.  Monday.  Tue and I  get up and help Muggs off on 3.40 train.  She expects to  arrive at Jeff City about noon.  We return to bed till 6 AM.

4.  Tuesday.  

5.  Wednesday.  Tue went to prayer meeting with Mrs. Brooks at night.

6.  Thursday.    Tue got letter from Muggs.  She arrived at J Cy (sic) all right.Tue over at Groves P.M.  Spends the evening after supper "playing out" some records brought down from Whites.  

7.  Friday.  Go to Interurban Station and pay light bill for Sept. and Oct  $3.80 and mdse. a/c 74 cents.  Take Tue to R.C. at Dr. Fulton's 2 P.M.  Sam Popham is dead today.

8.  Saturday.   

9.  Sunday.Tue went with Mrs. Brooks to hear Robert McIntyre at the Methodist Church who preached here many years ago.  

10.  Monday.

11.  Tuesday.I broke one of furnace doors AM. but think can make it do.  

12.  Wednesday.  The furnace makes big kick this morn at leaking:  try to investigate same with some slight success.

13.  Thursday.  

14.  Friday.  Tue  went to R.C. at Fulton's Polk and Eleventh.  Tue with Mrs. Curd called at Griffiths after R.C.

15.  Saturday.  6.30  AM.  Ther.  46.  54.  44.  = 48
Cloudy E.2.  This has been gloomy day:  Kind of a fog in the AM. with sprinkle rain several times.  Light easterly wind.  Tue got long letter from Phebe, she has loaned her money to one Geo B. Marvel and sent the note to Tue.    She expects to  finish at Havana in two weeks, is thinking of going out to  see Muggs before coming home.  Mrs. Bell was worse today and she  phoned Tue to come over.  Tue went uptown P.M. getting ham and eggs.  Eggs are 40 c. per doz.  I did not hitch up.  My lips and face some swollen and feeling much worse than usual.  Pay phone 313 for Oct. 1.50  Gobed  9.30

16.  Sunday.  6.30  AM.  Ther.  42.  46.  40. = 42 2/3
Cloudy N.2.  Light fog.  Furnace grate off again.  Dark and gloomy day.  Light northerly damp  (?) fog.  no rain.  Tue went to church AM with Mrs. Brooks and alone at night.  She was over to Bills P.M.  The old couple are no better.  I didn't hitch up let mare exercise in lot an hour or two.  The branch is up so it runs a good stream.  Clears off after dark.  Gobed 9.30

September 23-24, 1913 and 1888 in Coles County Illinois

1913

23.  Tuesday.  6 AM.  Ther.  44.  76.  66.  =  62.
Mostly clear. S.E.2.  A gouty tac on left kept me awake most  of night.  I get load small nut coal.  Tower Hill.  AM. 2960 lbs. am out and this is the first.  Tue gets letter from Buddy.  I get Winters to order hat for me. buy pair of Henson gloves 1.25 all Cr.  Talk with Harry Messeck.  He  has sownC.h. of phosphate borrowing drill of Max Gorffin.  I went P.M. out to Reeds for Peaches.  Mrs. R. says not ripe yet.  I continue on stopping at Sander's.  Get three chickens  of Mrs. S. paying 1.00  Think too much.  Got home 6 P.M.  Mostly clear day with strong southwind.  I made pot mush after supper.  Go bed 9.

24.  Wednesday.  5.30 AM  Ther.  56. 80.  64.  =  66 2/3
Clear S.2.  Rhoda came washing and ironing.  I drove down E. of Normal.  Get a few puff balls.  Helen Ferrish and George here to dinner.  John F.  is sick.  I did not see Ad. Miller except at long range.  Get shave Br. P.M.  After 3 P.M. I drove to town line.  There are few fungi coming.  I return by Watson road which they are plowing and scraping today.  Talk again with H. Missick.  He has sown car of rock Ph.  Get home  6 P.M.  Tue and Mrs. Brooks attend prayer meeting at night.  Most clear day S.4.  Go bed 9 PM

1888

23.  Sunday.  6.30 A.M.  Ther.  58.  73.  55.
Clear.  Cow refused to give us any  milk this morning and had probably been milked.  Clean out  part of bookcase and burn up lot of trash.  Talked of going out to Uncle John's with Tue after dinner but Mrs. Robinson came over after dinner and we gave it up.  Tue and I pick the peaches left in garden and balance of the grapes.  Mow grass for cow at night - father has lame leg.  Go bed 9 PM~~

24. Monday.  5.30 AM.  Ther.  49.  72.  55.
Clear.  Got started  at 8 oc.  took a saddle down today and after dinner rode all over south part of timber.  Four men at work AM. five P.M.  Enoch Johnson began again at noon.  Brown hauling rails in P.M.    Mrs. Brown rode home with me.  Mrs. Dickenson washed today.  Tue suffering from tooth ache.  Gobed 9.15 PM.

April 23-25, 1913 in Charleston, Illinois

23.  Wednesday.  5 AM  Ther.  58.  78.  64. = 66 2/3
Mostly clear. S.3.  Emmett came before 7 finished fence repairs trims berries and other jobs AM.  Tue  got card from Muggs.  She arrived all right at Jeff City 10.30 P.M.  Rhoda came and washed, did part of ironing is sick.  Emmett trims trees &c. working all day and settle to date 4.50 check.  Has got to plant his potatoes tomorrow, will come again.  I work much of  P.M. helping Emmett.  Tue attends  prayer meet at night with Mrs. Brooks.  Mostly clear day with very high Southerly winds.  Gobed 9

24.  Thursday.  5 A.M.  Ther.  64.  78.  68.  = 70.
Cloudy.S.3.  I got early to go to Loxa but couldn't do so.  Oil  buggy.  I  began light rain 6 AM.  Tue got up 6:30.  I start Loxa 8 AM Light rain Drove me back home.  One Rennells says will take most of my old brick today or tomorrow.   Pick out  28 of my stone tomato plants into paper boxes.  They are very small yet.  Harman phones that Paul sick and has not been able to take posts to Loxa.  Get shave and hair cut and wash at Brown's P.M. pd. 50 cts. after which I start E. for drive on Ashmore road.  Too windy for me and return.  Tue went to picture show at C. Hat night.  Part cloudy day with sprinkles rain and threatening.  We are needing some rain.  The roads are getting dusty.  Weather Bureau predicts rain soon.  Gobed. 9.30.  Look at buggies at Bell and Bells.  I look at Mercantile seeing nothing I care for.

25.  Friday.  5 AM.  Ther.  54.  50.  48.  = 50 2/3
Cloudy N.1.  Begins light rain 5.30 and continued to drizle(sic)  much of day.  Tue working for function of RC at Balwares.  She left home before noon.  Jack and I ate dinner alone.  Frank Rennells calls and will take old brick on Perkins lot at 4.00  Stopped raining 5 P.M. meas. 6 P.M. .61.  I order bale straw and fresh oats.  I.B. was out of feed.  Did not hitch up.  Gobed 9.  Cloudy day north wind 1.

12.  Wednesday.  6.15 AM.  Ther.  36.  64.  54.  =  51 1/3
Clear S.E.2.  Big white frost no ice.  Tue expected her roomers to leave today but Dr. has ordered him to stay another week.  Burn up the trash in basement A.M.  Tue got letter from  Phebe.  She had not recd. my letter of  Sunday.  Rhoda  came to wash about 11 AM. finishing  3 P.M.  Helen Ferrish came in after dinner.  She and Tue went uptown.  I hitch up 3 P.M. and later drove out to cemetery  for exercise.  Much cloudy day S.3.  The roads worse if possible.  Tue went prayer meet night good   10 PM

1888

12.  Monday.  6 AM.  Ther.  22.  37.  31.
About clear wind N.E. and fresh.  Tue made fire again this morning.  Chilly day with fresh easterly wind. clouds up at night and feels like rain.  Went uptown before dinner but felt bad all day and remained at home the rest of day.  Maggie has got through second reader and I bought her the third today.  Gobed 9 PM.

18.  Wednesday.  6.30 AM.  Ther. 34.  36.  32.  = 33 1/3
Mostly cloudy W.2. white frost;  thin ice; I had intended going to Loxa too inclement and did not hitch up.  Rhoda came  AM helping Tue till say 2 P.  Washed windows mostly and stayed to dinner.  Is sick.  Tue putting rubber strip on windows setting R. and Kitchen.  she went to prayer  meet with Mrs. Brooks.  I send 2.00 to Natl Geoa(sic) Soc for annual dues and the Magazine.  Cloudy with moderate westerly wind.  Alfred chored.  Go bed 10 P.M.

1887

18.  Sunday.  7 AM.  Ther.  35.  43.  37.
Cloudy, wind N.W.  Partly cloudy day with variable wind Southeasterly at night.  Tried to get pork out of the way but did not finish it.  Up town little while  afternoon.  Kate Davis over about dinner time.  Maggie, Phebe and father went out with the baby a while.  Pig made about 13# of sausage.  Gobed 10 PM ~

18,   Wednesday, W.2.  Ther.  56.  68.  52.  =  58 2/3
Part Cloudy, W.2.  Tue makes arrangements with Helen by phone and starts for Mattoon on 9 car.  It began to rain light about 10.30 AM.  I had just got hitched up.  Let water in furnace and find it leaks badly.  Phone Fred.  I drive S.W. three  or four miles starting 2 P.M.  Saw several cutting B.C.  Drove round by J.W. Pierceys returning by Al Latta's getting home 4.30.  Tue came at 5.  She with Helen ate dinner at Louise's.  It clears off at night.  Tue attended prayer meet night gobed 9.
