February 5-6, 1913 and 1888 in Charleston, IL

1913

5.  Wednesday.  5.30 AM.  Ther.  6.  20.  8. = 11 1/3
Most clear.  NW.2. W.C. again froze up.  We have to thaw out with lantern.  Rhoda came to wash 7.30.  Tue went up to Parker sale at store AM.  Rhoda does other work and stays the dinner.  This the coldest day this winter.  Light westerly wind all day.  Mostly cloudy  PM with snow flurries.  The weather forecasts predict same for several days.  I did not get out much.  The furnace "off" again early and had to work an hour before could build fire.  Ordered cobs Whalens for morn.  Self feel poorly.  Gobed 9.30.

6.  Thursday.  6 AM.  Ther.       0.  32.  18.  = 16 2/3.
Mostly Clear W.1.  Again trouble with W.C. freezing.  I did not let loose till noon.  Think I can fix it good tonight.  Attic tank ran dry last night.  We borrow lamp lanterns in coal room  might benifit W.C.  Could not see difference: it froze all same.  Load cobs from Whalens came 1.00 cr. per load P.M.  Tue works of PM on R.C.  lesson.  Think have WC fixed so  will stand cold night - will let it run all night.  Part cloudy  day: light SW wind.  Mrs. Fulton called to see  Tue P.M.  Tue got armful of books from library.  One of cold days.  Go bed 9.

1888

5.  Sunday.   7 AM.  Ther.    24.  29.  22.
Cloudy wind NW.  Baby slept well and think she is  all right.  Don't think she has the whooping cough.  It is very prevalent in town and several children have died from it quite recently.  W.L. Montecue died suddenly at Dr. Steele's office yesterday morning.  Maggie and Phebe got to S.S. in AM. and up to Davis after dinner.  Open Bbl of Baldwin apples, have just finished one of gradings.   Tue went over to Perrills a while toward night.  Called at Mrs. Shaw's she is not much better.  Have been smoking cigar since July 11 and have decided to quit for a while toward night.  Cloudy AM  clears off  and  clear night.  Go bed.  9.30 P.M.

6.  Monday,  6.30 AM.  Ther.  15.  34.  31.
Clear with S. wind.    Girls both go to school.  Mrs. is reported better today.  Get  John Savely to saw up  half cord wood.  Comer up town.  Order him to saw  me 2000 ft.  2 in. plank and 2000 ft. 2.3 and 4 by 5 such as city uses @ .70 on the yard in wood.   Pay him check $100.00  on balance due him.  A. Taylor working  for Winter was  found dead  in his bed this morning.  Jim Perrill  got some more sheeting and ordered 400 ft. 2 in elm plank 14 ft.  Baby had  a severe time with her bowels after supper.  Mostly  clear day, wind southerly.  Go bed 10.30 PM.

January 22-23, 1913 and 1888 in Charleston, Illinois

1913

22.  Wednesday.  6 AM.  ther.  26.  42.  38. = 35 1/2
Clear.  S.2.  White frost.  Tue complaining in night.  Rhoda came 7 AM. to  wash.  She stays to dinner.  Tue gets letter from Muggs.  Went up to Brown's for shave and hair cut for first time since the grip.  Paid .40  Tue and Phebe fix up box for each Muggs and Buddy.  Mailing  Muggs  at night.  It clouded up before noon continuing all day   It began to rain light showers 6 P.M. and kept it up much of the night.  Gobed 9 P.M.

23.  Thursday.  6.45 AM.  Ther.  46.  48.  42. = 45 1/3
Cloudy.  Mist.  S.3.  Light rains much of night and sprinkles this morn (.83)  Tue not feeling well but irons much AM.  She has tiff with roomer.They read light meter for month P.M. 684000.  The Dec. no of Geographic came today.  Tue over to Groves at night till late.  Phebe ate supper at Frances Stodderts.  They sent Buddy's box by express.  Cloudy day with moderate northerly winds.  The papers have been talking about a cold wave for two or three weeks but it has not come.  The mud roads are reported very bad.  Am out of cobs as well as corn.  Have coal enough to last till March with this  kind weather.  Gobed 9 P.M.

1888

22.  Sunday.  7 AM.  Ther.  15.  25.  25.
Cloudy wind S.E. light snow flying.  Maggie and self went up after newspaper.  Left word for Dr. Patton to come down and see baby, she (?) so much better after dinner.  Tue sent word that he needn't come.  Cloudy all day and thawing on south side.  Had duck for dinner.  Hung up meat in smoke house toward night.  Tue  went over to Wentz.  Girls up to  Davis before night.  Go bed 10~~

23.  Monday.  6.30 AM.  Ther.  25.  34.  21
Cloudy, wind light S.W.  A.H. Prevo  paid  (?) AM is going away tomorrow P.M.  Bue Dawsom pays up in afternoon.  Mrs. Rogers washes twoweeks(sic) wash.    Comer and two men at work stacking ties  was down to see them in afternoon.  Engage John Savely and Lem McKee help tomorrow.  Tue feeling badly today.  Left her things out all night.  Maggie went to school.  Clear off PM. wind NW  Gobed 10 PM.
