Cloudy NW wind some sleet and rain in night night  I did not wake till 6.30  Clara did not come on 5.37 as expected but arrived on local.  My supper disagreed with me last night and feel badly this  morning.  Light fine snow a while in morn.  Shirley called about 9 AM.  Paid me 5.00 borrowed last week.  Clara ironed  Tue attends R.C. at J.H. Marshalls.  Peel last of quinces.  Buy clock and oil cloth at Jenkins, paid.  Maggie over at Roman's at  night.  Clara went to see Daisy.  Tue and Marie at Groves.  Cloudy day with NW wind fine snow occasionally (?).  gobed 9.30 P.M.

Partly clear.  Westwind.  Jack Trobaugh works from 8 am till 4 P.M  Pay him 1.00 which is 16 cts over.  Clara uphosters her kitchen table.  Jack split and piled wood and clean out stable &c   Defenbaugh pays up and I release mortgage  Allowed him about 5.00 to pay for abstract I promised him.  Mrs. Gaines sent for some goods which I buy at Jenkins.  Hearty talking of a greenhouse and would like to lease bottom lot.  I went up town after supper and had accident with Queen on way up.  Harness came off in part and might have had serious runaway.  Tue and Marie went up town at night.  Buy chicken at Hutton's  Mostly clear day with westerly wind.  Defenbaughs bal. pd today 75.00  Gobed, 10.30 P.M.

Cloudy wind S.  Started out to Uncle Johns with Tue about 9 oc. AM.  Found him washing up his breakfast dishes.  Had not been very sick.  Snider and Ferd came before noon als (sic) Oscar Dryold.  We left at 3 P.M.  Roads very bad.  Heavy showers in afternoon and very heavy rain in night  Maggie and Phebe stay at home with baby and grandpa.  Grass and wheat are very green and buds on fruit trees are swelling some.  Gobed 9 ~~

Cloudy heavy rain in night.  Some rain AM.  Sleet P.M. and night.  Wind NW and N.  Trade very light.   No country folk in town.  Am worried about stock down at ranch as Milt  said he was nearly out of corn.  Pay Ginther $20.09 still owe him $20.00 (gave note).  Tue sent cards to Mary Sayre.  Gobed 11 P.M.

Repairs.  Clara general scubbing   Helen here to dinner.  Warren Decker up with gray horse says will clean up where am cutting for one crop.  Daisy Mitchell calls on Clara P.M.  Tue over at Shortess' after supper.    Clara went to Loxa to remain over Sunday on 9 P.M. train.    Mushroom (shorthand) book will not be ready till Jany 25.  Mostly cloudy day  Easterly wend gobed 10.30

Cloudy Southwind.    Self feeling badly  Pick up things at barn a while AM.  Didn't  hitch up till toward night.  Then drive round town a  while  Tue got letter from Phebe yesterday, first since she left Rob went through to Evanston with her.  Roads sloppy  Snow disappears today.  Tue and children go to  church at night.  I sat around a while ate too much cold supper and gobed.  9 P.M.

Cloudy wind S.E.  Kelly starts for  hay  8 AM intending to take small load down to woods taking over  half  a ton got back at 4 P.M. lead my mare down rode back leaving team.  Have talk with John Simons who proposes to work for me for 20.00 per month.  Milt up town says a black ram lamb was born yesterday  Milt gets full and gets in Calaboar at night.   Late rain forenoon heavy after dark with some thunder  Clear night with strong W  wind Uncle John down to dinner, self nearly sick all day  Gobed 12.30  Got Marie's photos 1 1/2 doz. 5.00

Cloudy with E. wind.  Pick out 6  old sheep and put in pen  Make trough for them.  Began to sleet about9 AM.  Start for home before 10 AM. snow and rain all way on road.  Raining fast when got home about noon.  H.G. arrived yesterday PM from hunting trip having been gone since Nov 5 with very poor success at hunting.  Rain all PM and in night-  Pay R. J. Stuckey note and int $287.59   Conclude to quit chewing tobacco which have been using since Aug.  Gobed 10.30 PM~

Cloudy and snowing about an inch fell which soon went  off.  Milt Drake was up horseback and started home 10 PM.  The river is said to be up swimming deep.  The Stanberry trial did not come up  Court adjourned at noon till after Thanksgiving  Trade pretty good.  Quit  chewing tobacco and began again.  Dark cloudy day with NW wind and snow flying most of time  Gobed 11.30 PM.

Thanksgiving.  Cloudy and snowing strong.  W. wind about 1 in. of snow on ground.  Start Tom and Jim at store  We have roast chicken for dinner no company.  Maggie ate dinner at Lattas  Most of stores closed in afternoon.  Banks and PO closed nearly all day.  Pay John McKee 1.55 on Lem McKee for sawing and split a cord of wood  Mostly Cloudy day with NW wind and light snow.  Brown and Stack drummers here.  Bought  some venison at Bill Myers at night.  Trade rather quiet

Cloudy but not raining  Ride down to river bottom  Cut L board tree in S. Hollow which wouldn't work.  Look for  more which couldn't find find boys cut one in little Fritz hollow P.M. which we think all right  Start home at 3.30 PM arriving at 6 P.M.  Roads very muddy and slow driving.  Mist and fine rain PM and night  Gobed at 10.30 PM~  Trade has been light this week.

Cloudy and rain at spells all day.  Interested going to woods.  Pay Popham per load of hay. 3.00 .  HG will start for Ark. next Tuesday, with hunting party.  Trade not very lively, am somewhat discouraged about my shed and feed for sheep.  Have done but little toward it for two weeks on account of  rain.  Gobed 11 PM

cloudy.  Southerly wind.  The other Mrs. Owens comes to wash.  Tue  and Lillie move Miss Ford into east room. (shorthand)  Learn at Gaines' that Irene was expected home today.  The roads excepting paved streets are very muddy this morning   Lend Deffenbaugh abstract for ranch.  They are  getting their pipes together in front of Perkins lot.  on way to square with steam heat.  Simons did not come up with corn as intended.  Hatton has not shown up this week.  Went out to Gaines' 2 P.M.  Jo. shucking shock corn.  Has got 14 loads in to  elevator.  They  have only paid 29 cents for past week.  Get a  basket full of vegetables and start home 5 P.M.  Partly clear day slightly cooler than yesterday.  Got pretty good mess of Caprinus comatus at Bill Hill's which which have for dinner.  Jo Gaines has shucked about 750 bush corn to date.  I did not visit Loxa today.  HOme in time  for supper  Gobed 8.30 P.M.

Drove up to Dicks AM and beyond No mushrooms in sight.  See Teo Sefton about coal.  Take Bill Campbell down to his place AM.  They are digging ditch for heat pipes in ally back of store.  Lilly ironing.  CD Mitchell gives me bill for 1200 feet more lumber.  Saw Hatton crossing overhead bridge AM.  They have had saw mill on Decker land north of spring a week or two.   T. Armstrong out of common corn.  P.M. load still in barnyard.  Got a letter from Charley Popham saying need not bring rest of his bill.  Showers P.M. with heavy rain toward night and after dark.  Take Marie over to Weyths after supper to Halloween party.  Corn 30 cts here am entirely out of corn except sweet.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Cr.  Sent draft $120.00 to Loan and Trust Co.  John Simon and Warren up with wood.  Says Ira does not intend to sow any more until after after the election.  Give Bob Chapman key to Perkins room for station purposes.  Charge no rent.  Harry Stoddert wants lot of 2x4 - 12 and 14.  Dun Evans for small bill due.  Tue  sends some shirts to Phebe in newspapers.  Bill Hill called with Caprinus comatus while we were at breakfast.  John Simons calls after dinner and give him bills amounting to some 3600 ft.  Saye Brown in town.  He called P.M. and we settled for all collected by both of us, self to pay hauling.  Give Ira ch for $19.04  Simons not very well satisfied with Tom's management.  Pick balance of quinces.  Had about  1 1/2 bu on three trees.  Fair day westerly wind.  Tue over at  Groves at night.  Gobed 9 PM.

Cloudy and  Damp, wind N.E got a lot of things for Milt and Jo Handly  Start at 9 getting  then before noon.  Milt hauling logs Warren helps in PM.  Henry and Frank saw lot of logs for  long posts.  Begins to rain fine before 10 AM. and kept it up  all day.  Mort began sawing logs.  Tom Spurgen started hauling in P.M.  Wind fresh from NE  Gobed 10 P.M.

Cloudy N. wind Old Mare lost her colt last night and Milt buried it.  She has not been well for sometime and what little we have worked has seemed to hurt her.  Started for home about 8  AM.  went to Wilbers on Fox Ridge, but no hay   Feed of all kinds is scarce on east side in the thin sod diet.  Warren and Milt want to 'work' on logs.  Got home about 11 AM.  Cold damp day.  Trade duller than usual  Mrs. Clark and Hat here at night.  Gobed 11 PM.

About clear wind S.E  Had fine lot of oatmeals for breakfast from Jack Colby.  Bill Hatton still working at wood.  Drive down to H.G.'s and to Rictus Elevator  Corn 30c today, here.  Richter will sell me Hillsborough nut coal @ 2.00.  Theodore Arnold unloading car.  T.A. speaks of buying out Ira Brown.  Simone and Warren went through with loads (2) of lumber for Popham.  Pay C. Wiley Calves check $10.00  He claims mistake in my favor of $5.00 and returned $5.00.  Pay S.H. Record check for tile 18.20  Pay Binkly bill at stable for clipping horse last spring, 1.75.  Walk down 5th St. where they are putting in heating pipes.   Fifth St has been blocked for a week or so with this  business.  Girl Lillie Beck Calls AM to hire.  Order 10 to 12 tons coal of Richter, Hillsborough nut.  Democratic rally at gospel tent tonight,  was up town till 10 P.M.  (A smudge?) 30 c at Loxa.  Al Newby tells me  Jo is at work shucking  Clear day southerly wind  Gobed 10.30

Mostly clear.  fast load coal comes before done breakfast.  I had to shut them off on the slack.  They then claimed to screen it.   7 loads running about 1 1/2 ton to load.  Bill sawed wood all day getting done with sawing.  Took Tue  over to Reading Circle at G.B, Griffins P.M.  Maggie gets ready  and starts for Chicago on excursion starting 2.40 AM (27)  She stayed at Mrs. Blairs till train time  Many went.  Fare only two dollars.  Tue feeling badly all day.  Clear day SW wind.  Repub rally at night.  I was up town till nine O's Mort and Kate over.  Tue drives down to Martha's but couldn't get her to work for her.  Monday.  Gobed 9.30 P.M.

Heavy fog.  Calm.  Alarm of fire in night, Starrs Restaurant.  Bill worked at wood getting Kindling into cellar settle with him P.M. 6.85  He will put in the wood Monday  Simons has been shucking corn this week.  He and I went to Briggs to count up fences  Met Ira Brown and we have a sort of settlement only partially and no money paid.  Pay Simon One Dollar on hauling from pocket.  I drove out SW of town looking for mushrooms.  Found nothing but Armillaria Melleus  or something resembling it.  Pay coal oil bill $1.55  John and Warren brought up lumber part going on yard.  Gave Ira Brown book for his accounts.  Clear day light southerly wind.  Gobed 9.30 PM~~  Take Tue to  Hats after supper and went after her 8 PM

Clear.  NE wind Rogers  R. Decker and Milt work all day setting blocks for shed.  Got 18 set. Did nothing (something to light to read)

24.  Thursday  6 AM.  Th at C

Mostly clear, light white frost.  Boys finish setting blocks get log wagon of Comer and Milt tries to haul a few logs but got along very slow.  Sent  for Warren but he could not come today  Rile and Henry cut logs for 20 ft posts, looking like rain.  I start home at 5 PM. getting there at 7 PM.  Alex Axtin ran into my buggy with lumber wagon on way home.  Mare acted badly.  Trade has been pretty fair this week considering weather.  10.30 PM.

Partly clear, southerly wind.  Bill came before 7 AM. and began at wood in barn working at that and kindling all day.  They are pay 30 c for corn in Charleston today.  Drive down and see Mrs. Rogers about working for Tue one day this week.  She couldn't come.  Sam Weyeth called AM to see about his lumber.  Simons did not come up today, but Brown called PM while I was away.  I drove up to Decker Spring and beyond finding some Armellana meleus and Pleunotus astreatus.  Colby brought me mess of latter about noon.  Mrs. Owens ironed and is going away tomorrow.  Clear day southerrly wind Gobed 8 PM  Ferd here sup.

Foggy.  Was about sick all night.  Write letter to Minnie Pyles Hindsboro asking her to come down and work for us. Bill came early.  Went with him to Mintons for a plank..  Stop at Martha Veach's for Pattern.  Go see Mrs. Rogers, she cant help Tue before Monday P.M.  Take Tue  to Fluhartys and to Schatzburger   Charley Popham kicking because lumber for cirbs has not come  Learn  from Jim Decker that Simons & Warmen are shucking corn  Send word for them to hurry up with the lumber.  Sell Gaiser per Barr 638 ft 12 & 14 ft fencing.  Tue gone much of P.M.  Girls call to hire at night.  Kate over.  Clear day westerly wind gobed 9.30 P.M.  ( short hand)

Began to rain slowly about 11 last night and continued without stopping till toward night today  The goats keep me awake in night, having no shelter.  We put them in corn crib today  Milt put  in day in house, and culling wood for present use.  Took gun and went up to Handlys corner toward night.  Saw nothing to shoot  Riley Decker and Henry Rogers burning logs in west f(?)   old man Decker cutting wood for himself.   Gobed 9.30  wind NW

Partly clear S.E. wind.  Tue feeling badly this morn.  She has no girl yet and is barely able to do the work.  Maggie not well still works in Jenkins store  Marie goes to school, although stayed away a day on last week.  Get letter from Phebe which open and it proved to be to Tue.  The weeds still lay on pasture in the hollow.  Spoke to T. Brooks about putting in telephone next week.  Also thinking of putting in E. light fixtures.  Promised to go to  Ranch today but pills disabled.  High southerly wind all day.  Part cloudy.  Kate Stoddert here P.M. also Mrs. Knock.  Drive round a while at night alone.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Partly cloudy.  There was light shower in night.  Hatton came about 7 AM.  Rain till 10 AM. beginning at 8.  Bill Hatton cut wood most of day.  Wall pays rent to 20th  Deposit same  with Wyeth & H check 30.00 to K.G. a/c at State 80.00  Bert ate dinner with us.  Is on jury but got off  I drove out to Gaines after dinner.  Jo hauling fodder  Has delivered to date at Linder's 104 buschel corn.  I drove through place to Loxa.  Get some things for Gaines'  Saw Mrs. Shirley.  Martha at Dr. Sommers Mattoon,  Mostly clear P.M. and slightly cooler SW wind get home about dark  Self feeling badly all day.  Mrs Owens washed and will iron tomorrow.  She is going away  this week to be gone two months.  Charley Marshall was married last night.  Tom and Hannah called at night.  Gobed 8 PM  Bert says Jesse Lietch dead.  He started for Oklahoma with his Uncle Andy.  Jo Bill has shucked out less than 5 acres of corn near farm getting 10 loads or about 340 bush.  This indicates yield of about 70 bushels ot the acres.  Shirley's  men are cribbing 80 per day each  This shows heavy yield for him.  Elavators had  them stop a/c rain today but will begin tomorrow.  Corn 29 c at Loxa.  Hen is shucking for Smith wants to rent some ground.

16.  Wednesday.  5.30 AM.  Mostly clear.  white frost.  Milt helped  about logs today with horse and we get nearly two thousand feet cut and down hills.  Milt loads wood so as to start early tomorrow .  Riley Decker and old man have been burning brush this week and have nearly finished.  Gobed 9.30 PM.

Cloudy and signs of rain.  Decide to have Milt help today.  Cut walnut blocks and head up to house  boys cut red oak tops getting several good logs  Settle on site for  shed after dinner.  Leave Milt to put in gate posts west of house  start home about 4 PM with Frank Drake arriving about 6 P.M.  Find that Maggie has been sick all the week with  hives  Hat here to supper.  Business has been dull since I left on Monday morning.  Mostly cloudy day and warm  Gobed 10.30 PM ~

Clear heavy white frost.  Stove(?) came at 6 AM.  Took all caws and calves except one  Frank went with him to help  Frank and Milt got in about 7 P.M.    Riley & Rogers cut red oaks and cut load of stove wood for me P.M.  Had better luck with logs than yesterday.  Clear day and warmer.  Very dry down in timber pasture short  but plenty of water for stock.  Gobed 9 PM

Cloudy NW wind  Intended on going to ran(?) today whole family, but too cool and  windy.  Maggie not very well, she had the hives at night.  I start at 9 AM for ranch, cold and windy and  thick with smoke and mist.  Cleared off P.M.  Comer has been cutting the timber along road to Handly ford.  White sow had pigs yesterday.  Milt  and family after walnuts P.M. and not there when left.  Clear night, light going for good  gibed 9.30 P.M.

Clear heavy  white frost.  Took mare to Dr. Montgomerys house but man not at home  Start for timber before noon getting there before 1 P.M.  Rogers and Riley cut logs in P.M. with good deal of hard luck, cut big sycamore in Fritz hollow but not sound.  Milt got in about 8 PM with hay and Frank Mote.  Clear cool day go bed about 10 P.M.    St(?) called at night saying wood take cattle up to Uncle John in Morn.

Mostly clear.  Tue feeling badly.  Simon was up yesterday and took out bitts for lumber  Tue and Ferd decide to go to Mattoon with Mort and Kate on 2.45 train.  Marie also went.  I drove out to Gaines and find them gone away so I went to Mattoon  Couldn't find any of my folks but Gaines and wife found me and she and children rode out with  me getting to farm about  10 P.M.  Jo came soon after on train stay all night  - Go bed 10.30 PM

Rose says told fellow to pay me 200 amt of bill he owes me for lumber  I got home at 11 P.M. and ate hearty sup at that time  gobed 11.11 PM

Clear  Maggie Devone washed.  Pete Drake came but only hitched up for me.  John Simons brought up load of lumber for self and Charley Mitchell.  606 feet.  Today a shade cooler than past week.  Tue and I drive out to Gaines about 5 P.M.Jo helping Shirley in his Haungarian.  McCall at Hens a while seeing Shirley and gt home about 10 P.M.  McDonald little girl spends night with Marie.  Go bed 10.30 P.M.

Mitchell and some fencing which pile back of barn.  Cass and Ocelius Shaver call P.M. until 5 oclock.  Tue  attends Pricilla Club meet with Mrs. Grove and Knock.  Heat very oppressive  clear S.W. wind.  Lulu Dorsch stays all night.  Gobed 10 PM.

Partly cloudy hazy mostly clear day somewhat smoky   Uncle John was up to dinner says  will bring in bull tomorrow for Milt to take down to timber.  Stores closed in PM a while and most people went out to races.  Attendance very slim for Friday very few country people in   gobed  10.30 PM.

Clear smokey.  Went to depot to telegraph for beer, Uncle John brought bull in and ate dinner with us.  Milt went out late taking bull.  Paid up R. Decker and E. Johnson to date and more.  the crowd is better today than here to fair.  Pretty busy all day.  The horse fair  however was hardly a success this year, farmers being busy and being behind with all work.  Nick walked down home with me at night.  AM sun pretty "full" all day.  Go bed  10.30

Fair.  SE wind.  Jim Warren began mowing yard yesterday and continued today. @ 1.50 per day.  Maggie Devone finishes ironing.  Tue , Maggie and Marie eat supper at Groves.  Self invited but didn't want any supper.  Take two sacks back to W. D. Smith.  This one of the hottest days this summer.  Mostly  clear variable wind mostly northerly.  I could do little more than keep quiet today.  Gobed 10 PM.

Mostly clear.  Light cloudy.  Tue went away with Mrs. Shontias P.M.  Jim Warren worked at hay in yard till about 3 P.M.  $2.75  C.D. Mitchell gives me bill for lumber which he needs right away, about 2000.  Very sultry  Clear  with easterly wind   gobed  10 PM.

Cloudy Misty ` wind N.E. was at Knocks shop AM & PM.  Tommy says will build one chicken fence tomorrow if pleasant.  Try to  borrow counter for Miss Kemayer, without success.  clears off PM. wind W.  Girls went to school, last week was vacation.  Troutman drummer in town.  saw lot of posts & c for wood toward  night girls spend evening at Mrs. Davis.  Tue feeling badly cough not so bad as usual.  Gobed 9.30 PM

Clear, wind W.  Tommy not feeling well enough  to  work at fence.  Electors day - township.  big vote over 1,000.  Dem. ticket all elected except  L. Dunbar Justice.  I accidentally let cow out about noon and hunted for her all PM  got somebody else's cow.  Uncle John down to dinner.  Think they some chance of getting a team of him.  Milt went with me  to find cow.  Get ready so as to start  for Diona early tomorrow.  T(?) sp. of rain after dark.  Mrs.  D & children over at night.  9.30

Cloudy with strong N. wind.  Milt didn't come early and decide not to go.  He went to D alone   Tommy works at fence an hour or two forenoon, Made rake.Abbott works P.M. spading and scatters ashes in front.  Tue went over to Mrs. Knocks a while PM.  John Kink calls PM.  Pay him 5.00.  Mostly cloudy day with strong NW wind.  Abbot will help me tomorrow.  Hugh Perrill  is home on visit.  Gobed 9.30 PM~

Clear.  White frost.  Tom Knock and Abbot work most of day on chicken fence getting nearly  done.  Tue feeling better.  Loan H.G. small c.c. saw.  Borrow counter for Miss K.  Rent due today, but she can't pay till Saturday.  Speak to Jay about  getting money to move ties.  Pleasant day Northerly wind, partly clear.  Go bed  Go bed 10.30 PM.

Tommy finishes fence time - 1 1/2 days.  Got two men and moved counter from Hinald office.  Abbot sawed wood AM.  After dinner we went out to Uncle John's and got the white cow.   She has been there since Tuesday.  Uncle John gave me a jar of lard.  Abbott put wood in shed after getting back.  Pleasant Day wind variable getting in N. P.M. and growing much colder  Ther fell 12 deg in 3 hours.  City R . convention didn't go.  10 PM.
