Mostly clear N.W. wind some cooler.  Nick still remains at home  sent up word that he thought he would be able for duty next Monday.  I remain at store all day in fact have not been able to write up this record this week.  gobed 1030

Mostly cloudy went down to RR to see Sefton about Bbl of whiskey which came last Monday with only 12 gals in it.  Walked down to tie pile count 149.  18 of them are John Whites.  Have heard from Woods once or twice this week.  Warren brought up load of 11 ties.  Chut load  70 posts  Report John Simon pull onions  Monday dig potatoes Wednesday cut sprouts other days and probably work at ties rest of the time.  Uncle John brought basket of Poocerus mushrooms which prove to be good eating.  Say at store all day.  Trade good  Hat was down to supper.  31 silk worms have began to to spin.  Had on hand in all this AM 124.  Change 23 on hillside to another limb  Part cloudy day  N wind and growing cooler.  Gobed  10 30 PM

23.  Sunday.  7 AM.  Ther 54,

Mostly cloudy.  Was sick in the night but don't lay it to mushrooms rather to watermelon eaten yesterday P.M.  Starts to ranch at 2.30 P.M. getting there before night and went over to east field boys have not made much headway sp...ding this week.  Clover looks fine.  Warren decided he can't break my wheat ground.  Had 22 BushVictor potatos [sic.] and about 25 bush onions all in barn.  Sp Rain about dark  Gobed 8 P.M.

Mostly clear.  I had sore throat keeping me awake most of night and lay in bed till long after breakfast.  Drove east of town A.M.   Get lot of young Leoiota procerus which gave to Mrs. Dr. Patton also several other kinds clitoeybi  and Trichicholoma. Very close and warm  Sold Sam Weyth 10 1x6 - Paid $1.25  I drove out to Fairground toward night getting back just in time to escape thunder shower with light rain from 5 P.M. till after dark.  Feeling very badly self today  Tue and girls sewing.  Florence Moore went away tonight.  Gobed 8.30 P.M.

Mostly cloudy.  Phebe up early to go on excursion to Marion, IN.  Tue wants to allow Marie to go to Indianapolis Sunday on excursion.  Start to Gaines 9 AM.  Jo mowing weeds along branch.  I did not stay to dinner but went to Loxa calling on Mrs. Bridges for rent which didn't get.  Return Gaines through place.  Mash of corn looking well.  I didn't eat any dinner today.  Very sultry somewhat cloudy day.  Stay at Gaines till about 4 P.M.  Stop at Talbotts.  He gave me about 1/2 bush fine potatoes.  Got home before 6.  Oran Pierey rode part way too  town with me,   Took home a lot of corn beans cabbage tomatoes &c from Joe's.  Pay Jo check  18.00 on month wages.  Self feeling badly all day.  Roads good.  The rain on Monday morning was heavy at Loxa.  Met Shirley hauling BC[broom corn] for Downey  Gobed 8 PM.

Clear N.E. wind.  Tue had toothache all night.  Helen and Maggie got breakfast.  Phebe did not  come home last night, staid [sic] at Montgomery's.  Get Reasor to put in new  hydrant at barn which they finish 2 P.M. but pump in cellar does not work.  Tue feeling badly went back to bed in P.M.  I drove down south of town P.M. getting big lot of ?Psalliota two kinds, also a lot of puff balls.  I   left mess of PBs at Dr. Pattons.  Mrs. Patton sick.  Warm  AM but cooler and cloudy P.M.  There was a fall of 10 degrees in temperature between 1 P.M. and 2 P.M.  I went up after dark talk while with Garrison but didn't get   rent.  Gobed  9.30 PM

23. Saturday.  6.15 A.M.  Ther.  52.  80.  56  =  62 2/3

Partly cloudy.  Tue felt badly all night with tooth ache &c.  Thinks she ate too much for supper.  Fix her up some bitters after breakfast.  Drive up by  Dice's woods but didn't find any  mushrooms worth saving.  Jim Decker up and  I go on his note for 100.00 for 90 days to harvest B.C. [broom corn]  Marie and Helen went to party at Straley's at night.  I drove uptown for some grub so many buggies I couldn't tie up, so didn't stay long.  The Salvation Army are still preaching at 3rd and Monroe.  Couple fellows rode down there with me.  Partly cloudy day with easterly wind.  Jim thinks will begin cutting B.C. Monday.  Tue kept her bed all day today.  Gobed 9.30 PM

Part clear N.W. 1.  Tue and girls ironing.  Get shave at Browns AM.  We hear no more from Kate Bacon.  Mort Grove has gotten well and has gone to work.  Mrs. G still feeling poorly.  I drove SW PM and round Hen's* bottom road.  Nobody working fields today.  Saw no fungi.  I stop at J H Parker's leave word for him to go to Loxa to repair floor.  He called later in evening, will go Monday.  Folks all went to band concert an Square leaving me with Charles.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Cloudy, wind N.  Decided change in the air since last night.  Crass came to work before I was up.  Clean out weeds in garden and bottom.  Set stakes for pile of wood up on lot.  After dinner clean out  ice box at store.  Drive after supper with Tue and girls.  Cloudy most of forenoon mostly clear P.M.  Ruth brought down cocoons of black silk worms which I put on string.  Go to bed 10 P.M  Remit checks to Hillerman Bros. 31.20, K.B. Cracker Co. 2.20.

Clear. W.2.  They put bronze figure on Monument today. Had supposed it finished.  Corn is looking well N. of town but saw nobody plowing.  There seems to be no fungi anywhere.  I drove round by Stoddert's farm 8 AM.  They are enlarging their hay shed and  shingle new roof.  I drove PM out to Helen's for bmilk.  Geo has measles but seems pretty well.  Rhoda washed A.M. didn't  dine.  Mostly clear till toward night.  I got back from Helen's just before heavy rain bet. 6 and 7 P.M.  .55 in.  Go bed 9 P.M.

Clear.  Another  very hot night.  Mrs. Laird washes.  Crass came early to say he couldn't help me today.  Gather what good cocoons I had; only about 1 1/2 lbs.  This was the hottest day in several years but a good breeze blowing all day from the west.  ship all the empties I had 25 cases 1 empty to PhB. 2 Bx & 1 Bbl. 192 Gas 15 chB at W. 2 cases pts. to Ashmemien 1 case cent 5 doz. pc to JWalker & Co.  rode down to depot with Young, Tue and children.  Slept on floor down stairs.  Learn they have appointed Lag Harris Sep. 7. of waterworks.  There was a light sprinkle of rain about 1 P.M. today.  Go bed10 P.M.

Cloudy N.2. light rain.  Walter left at 2 A.M.  Some light showers in night measure 8 A.M. .20.  Left mare in barn last night.  Darling called 10 A.M. and pay him 2.00 for 8 loads manure hauled out on farm.  Says big rain Loxa S. at night.  I drove to look at Telephonepoles(sic.) near  Griffin Elevator AM.  Did not decide to buy any.  Kate and Stella came AM.  Skinner called twice AM. and PM.  I drove to timber E. 4 P.M.  No fungi appearing.  Get some red root for meddy.  The roads are good especially gravel.  Some mud on other roads.  Stranger (plastner) road town.There was no sign og any fungi in woods. Kate and Stella went to Mattoon at 5 P.M. to meet her sister Alice.  Cool part cloudy day.  Moderate northerly wind and sprinkle rain several times also in night.  Gobed 9.30 P.M.

Friday, June 17, 1887  6.30  ther.  76.  95.  79.  Some clouds.  Crass comes about 7.  Tue cleaned up ice box and will take ice from now on.  Got  first today.  Crass finishes whitewashing cellar and we clean out silk worms at store as they have failed to do anything, Clean out smoke house afternoon and pack some bottles.  Drive with girls, after supper and with Tue later.  This has been the hottest day  so far & signs of rain about 4 P.M.  Getting very dry here.  Buy eel of Bill Neece.  Gobed at 9.30 PM

Part Cloudy S.3.  The storm that was brewing at bedtime last night reached us about 1 A.M. and until 2 A.M. we had all the rain, wind and thunder we could handle.  The electrical display was great.  1.05 inches rain fell non after 2 AM.   The wind stripped many small limbs off our trees.  I did not sleep more than an hour.  Tue answered the door bell 5 A.M.for Marie, Walter and baby.  They were quite unexpected.  They left Mt. Carmel at 9 P.M. last night and met the storm at Paris.  Andy Sisk injured recently in runaway was buried today.  Kate did not stay to dinner.  I felt badly all day.  Drove round town a little and E a mile or two P.M.  The storm trimmed trees all over town.  Mostly cloudy day withwith high S.W. wind threatening with sprinkles rain and thunder lightening at night.  Go bed 9 P.M.

Clear.  Crass comes to work at 7 A.M., cleans out cellar &c.  A few more worms begin spinning today.  Decker brought up load of wood making in all to date 4 cord. @1.75 all measured up and  neat.  Silk worms seem to be determined to die  quit feeding them up town.  Crass whitewashed cellar P.M.  Tue went up town about supper time.  Drive after supper with Tue, took baby.  Good many worms up store spinning  many dying.  Gobed, 10 P.M.

Part cloudy thunder showers S. wind S.W.2.  Emmett came finishing 2 P.M. Paid him up in full ck. $1.65  Parker came AM amd pay him for shingle barn. 12.90  Will get him to repair B.C. shed soon and we discuss plans for same.  I look  I look for Simons but think not in.  They finish Soldiers Monument AM.  Kate came A.M.  staying the night.  All except self  visit shows at night.  Emmett raked yard and cleaned up good deal.  This warm day of season to date.  Moderate southerly wind with showers around.  Emmett says rainbow.  It sprinkels several times and threatens rain with lightening NW with lightening NW night.  Parker brought Tue Egg Plants which she set.  there is big mix up at Chicago R. Presidential Conv. which will be  held 18th (?).  Gobed 10.30 P.M.

Father met with accediting (?) H.G. down second time time to see about lumber.  Had to go right down to mill to see about it.  Start at 8 AM get back at noon.  Hottest day of June.  Mrs. Laird irons.    The silk worms at house and store both dying fast.  Fast one spun yesterday, others began today.  Took a lot from upstairs down up to store.  Father and I went up to Chiltern after osage.  Gobed  9.30.

Mostly cloudy S.E>2.  Tue did  not  get out till 7 AM.  Tue ironing.  She persists in doing this herself or with Phebe's help.  I drove uptown and watch work on The Soldier's Monument a while.  They are about to lift the statue in place.  Meet Geo. Heistand  He has recently renewed insurance on Loxa House.  There was good rain N. yest. but little at Loxa.  Get Emmett to come after dinner.  Mows yard, hoes garden.  Kate came A.M. but left before night.  Will return later.  Somewhat sultry day with thunder and sprinkles of rain. at times.  What looked like heavy showers around us, very little here.  Strong lightening S. and S.W. at night sp. 2.  after midnight.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Clear, N.E.1.  Kate and Stella came about  9 AM and decide to hire a horse to take them over to Ashmore.  I drove to Andrews and order material to repair  barn at farm.  PM I drove over and saw Parker.  Will begin roofing barn Monday morning.  BPA ship lumber to Loxa paying freight.  I drove SW returning by Woodson Road getting home after six.  Kate was here when I got home and stayed the night.  In evening Kate relates some experience in Cal.  She has divorced from Mr.  Bacon.  The pump in cellar is our of commish P.M.  Most clear day go bed 9.30

About clear, wind NW.  Stopped to look at Ruth's silk worms.  They look larger then mine did last year.  Father and I went out to G. Linder's after hedge after dinner.  Learn that his affairs for pension has been rejected.  Appearance of heavy rain with much thunder about 2 P.M., but little fell here.  Jake Linder died this morning Had not been sick long.  First two loads of lumber came up from the timber today.  Drove with Tue down to Depot to take Mapes girls valises.  Went with Ruth and Maggie up to Anderson's after hedge.  Gobed 9,30 P.M.  Oldest worms are preparing for their exit molt.  Mice still at them.

Partly cloudy. N,N,W,  The  "shower" in night might just laid the dust.  Phebe and Ora occompany (sic) friend Mrs. Campbell to Paris and left on 6.22 train.  Fix up some paint and give porch floor one first coat.  Mort is reported better this morn.  Mrs. G. not so well.  Start Loxa 10 return with cherries and start again after dinner.  Fred Harman mowing and plowing 1/2 piece of clover.  Slict helping him.  Thane have about half broken and include it with piece on west in B.C.

I went out to measure old barn &c so we  can shingle.  It is 26ft. square with one third pitch to roof. Harman says can get material same in Mattoon delivered.  Did not visit house.  Drove west part of place.  Oats looking better.  Seem to have good stand young clover with oats.  Go home through Loxa and S. road.  Stop Hedkens for buttermilk.  this has been busy day in country.  The roads are good.  Go home 6 P.M.  Kate B. called after supper.  Have promised take her over river tom.  All hands to show at night.  Gobed 9.30

Davis accepting bill of 38000 ft. bridge lumber to be delivered Aug.  "Our son" says city must have 500 ft 2" x 8" - 6' at once. Write to  Deunway sending 62.00 and order case beer.  Drive while at night with Tue.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Clear.  Delia thinks she has the measles this morning and I took her home before noon.  Maggie going with me.  Father and self went after osage in morning and again in night.  The silk worms which have not been doing very well seem better today but the ants are after them again.  Uncle John was down to dinner.  Comer came up toward night.   Has ill ready to go to work Monday morning .  I recd. letter from ED Doire with bill for  38,000 ft.  Drove with comer down to Winston's.  Go bed at 10.30

Part cloudy S.W.3.  The rain last night measured one inch.  None fell after 9 P.m.  I was born seventy years ago today.  I have received a straw hat and a pocket knife.  I got the paper.  Tue and Phebe went to church.  I drove E to timber getting home about noon.  Toward night drive via J.B. Hills to town line returning by Watson's.  Dirt roads quite muddy.  Think more rain north.  I call at Emmetts.  Will work for me tomorrow.  Has lost my spade fork.  Saw Nick in passing.   Part cloudy day moderate W. wind, becoming light southerly at night.  Mrs. Knock here till 9 P.M.  Gobed 10.30

Cloudy, was clear early.  Got a baquet  for breakfast this being my 45 birthday.  Buy 5 1/2 yards matting to put in hall, cr. at Chambers $1.92.  School committee go to Chicago  to see about new school house.  Delia concludes to quit  Saturday.  Council meet tonight, but did not act on the pitch for license.  Put in a/c against City for lumber to date $14.50.  Take a lot more silkworms up town.  They don't seem to be doing well.  Mostly clear day with N.W. wind.  Got letter from Mary Sayre mostly about Aunt C. & Geo.* Go bed 10 P.M.  Father** and self went after hedges to Anderson's.

*Aunt Charity and Uncle George Wade- Charity was my Gr-gr-grandmother's sister.  This couple was very dear to Charles and Keturah.

Clear, S.E.1. light fog early.  Get letter from Andy Moore to come over and look over line fence where he wants to put flood gate.  I let him do it his own way and I pay half.  Drove over to Sexton corner where Paul  and Curtis were hunting crows in the corner locust.  The are breaking  26 A for B.C. will finish in a day or two.  They had just done planting.  Cliff had just gone home, I didn't see him.Went round by BC shed and south to Loxa.  Cliff's corn where up looks pretty well- good stand.  Clover meadows only fair.  Return South road getting home 6.30.  Didn't get tired as usual.  S road very rough generally dry Mostly clear day S.3.  Tue and Phebe town at night.  Not many people on road today.  Gobed 9 P.M.

Mean temp 67.7 Max. 88 on 23d.  Min 38 on 13th light frost 13th only one.  Precipitation, 3.12in on twelve days. .96 on 5th .40 on 10th .45 on 11th .50 on 15th and 16th.67 on28th other days light or trace.  Clouds 34%. Thunder 5th, 10th, 11th, 24th 26th and 28th.  The winds for May were N 4 3/5, NE2, E 2/3, SE 4 2/3, S 11 1/3, SW 4 1/3, W 1 1/3 and NW 2 days.  The roads are dry but rough.  Oats generally looking well also meadows.  There is still much water in ground.  Corn 7(?) at Loxa Butter 25 to 35.  Eggs 15.  The biggest corn have seen say  in.  Half the corn is 6(?).

Cloudy damp day occasional light rain.  Bad weather for the worms which which don't seem to be doing very well.  Tue not very well satisfied with Delia and they have a few words.  Got paper and begin to paper hall, but get only half done.  Snider** brings butter and lard and take home jug.  Went up to Anderson's before supper after osage.  Father* went with me.  Go bed 9.30 PM  Got sack  flour at Hills 1.30 cr.

Clear S.S.W.3. Emmett came, was sick yest.  He mows yard A.M.  The machine worked fine.  Cut weeds in pasture.  In P.M. we went to cemetery and worked an hour or two cleaning off lots.  Kate and Stella call about 11 A.M.  They are back on a visit from California where they went four years ago.  Emmett went to cutting weeds on Perkins lot after we got back.  Tue washed A.M. and was over to Grove's by request several times today.  Mr. G does not seem well today.  Tue visits Mrs. LeReck at night.  Clear day strong southwind (sic).  K&S went over to Frank's to dine Phebe and Ora Webb arrive 11P.M.  Phebe lost her trunk on trip home.  Go bed 10.30 P.M.

 Hot day and mostly clear.  Drive with Tue, Phebe and baby up N. of town and also down to water works after dinner.  Kate Davis over while  P.M.  Went with Ruth and Maggie after Osage.  Thunder shower with wind and heavy rain after 10 P.M.  Caught a large gray moth last night, she deposited after I caught her about 100 eggs.  The  roads are getting very good.  The silk worms are getting to be very much in the way.  There are some 10,000 or 15,000 of them and they occupy more room every day.  Gobed 10 P.M.

Saturday, May 11, 1912 - 5.30 AM.  Ther 64, 78,62 =68Cloudy S.3.  the rain in night amounted to .40 in.  This is serious for the field-meet here today.  A great day was anticipated.  Emmett came working till noon.  Paid to date 1.50 ch.  He left mower at  McNeals going with me to Interurban for package yest.  Tue puts wire in WK screen door.  This was to have been a big day for Charleston with lots of visitors from all over state, but threatening much with light rain at times and thunder.  The cars seem to be doing good but  country people not numerous as ordinary Saturday.  I put on "new" suit  in full this AM.  have had it for year or two,  T &E went up town at night.  Go bed 9 P.M.

Wednesday  7 A.M.  Ther. 68, 85, 64  Clear.  About 1200 hatched out this morning.  Open the store a while in the morning for air.  Went down to Snider's after dinner to to take some beer.  Got can of buttermilk and two dozen eggs.  Got Mr. Young in afternoon to help about the carpets.  Tue and Delia cleaning house.  Mr. Russell drummer in town.  Baby had bad time about supper time and after.  Started Father for the Doctor but she got better and was called him.  Took Young home about 5 P.M.  Light shower came up from E. toward night.  Go bed 10 PM

Clear S.E.3.  Buy hoe W.E.H. pd.  Get shave and hair cut at Browns A.M. Pd. 40c.  Emmett called 1 P.M. and set him at work mowing yard.  There is a big field -meet at the Normal and people are sprucing up.  Tue over to G.G. Lee's P.M. on R.C.* biz..  I drove down by Nick's and order "sauce" but did not go for it.  Emmett will come in morn to finish.  Tue over to Grove's at night .  Helen brings Tue some butter and eggs~ Somewhat threatening P.M. with lightening S.E. at night and heavy showers later.  I pay Frank Ricketts 2.00 ck for bill last winter.  Tue decides to keep Ellen another week.  Gobed 10 P.M  R. 4.0 in

Tuesday,   May 10, 1887  7 A.M.  Ther. 70,81,68.  Clear.  Geo and Chanceller help til about 10. A.M. putting away things at store.  Take Tue and baby for drive in afternoon east of town.  Roads pretty rough but dry.  After we got home drove around town with father awhile.  The silk worm eggs which I raised began to hatch today.  Eastin folks have completed their summer kitchen which they have been working on for several days.  Go bed 9.30

Monday, April 29, 1912  Monday 5.45 P.M.  Ther. 60, 66, 46 + 57
cloudy and raining S.E.2.  The mare was out in pasture night.  I sort and burn old papers AM.  The rain continued much of the day.   Mostly in P.M.  Total rain .93  I did not hitch up.  Ellen went up town toward night and at night they attended a musicle(sic.) entertainment at the Normal* at night getting home 10.30.  Bill Hill called showing me large avensis** and a few Morels.  It is too cold for morel.  The  wind shifted from S to N about noon Then falling several degrees.  Gobed 11 PM

**http://www.imageflora.com/image/agaricus-avensis2/  Charles Gramesly studied the mushrooms in the Charleston area.  He corresponded with others about his finds.  Charles left his family many sketches of the mushrooms he found.  His beautiful mushroom and fungi books were donated to Eastern Illinois University after my Grandmother Marie Sayre Gramesly Reasor died in 1981.

Clear. Mr. Young comes early.  worked a while in the garden and then went down in bottom and began ditch which have decided to put in.  Went up town after dinner and order seven rods of tile of Record.  Phebe did not sleep well last night and kept ne awake a good deal .  She is better  today.  Young at ditch all (?).  Delia washing bed clothes.  (?) going home to stay next week but has decided not to go.  Pleasant day very bright and clean wind N.W.  Rec 1/2 oz. silk worm eggs from Ag Dep. *
 Go bed midnight

* My Grandmother was born in 1887, so I know Charles continues raising silk worms for years to come since she told me of having to check her shoes in the morning for cocoons.
