June 1914

15.   Monday.  Pay Myers in full on painting.  Rec.  package from  G.G. Tienery of Terre Haute which ordered Friday Recd. 10 AM. Ex prepaid.

15.  Monday   Mercantile has second lot of ratchets and all for one side.   Put in much time trying to sell old newspapers.    J.O. Linder  funeral at 10 AM.  I was not able to go.  Learn that Warmans are going to move to farm. S.E. near river.  Tue and I drive out to Helen's late P.M.

16.  Tuesday.   Mrs. Bitlidoux cakked while P.M. called while in P.M.  I drove W. of town late PM.  They putting in concrete culvert this side C.H. high bridge.  A bad place and after crossing I kept on coming back by Sam Walters getting home 7 P.M.  Mostly clear day and continues cool  with moderate with N.E. wind.  The Normal Summer School began today with 600 in attendance.

17.  Wednesday.  

18.  Thursday.  get straw hat Winters which don't like.  Buy  pens at W.S.H. P.M.

19.  Friday.  The Mexican "A.B.C. "  Mediation  plan has failed and President Wilson finds himself "up a stump."  Junk Cooper pays for old papers.  I drove down on Seventh St. to see where yesterdays fire was, couldn't find it.  

20.  Saturday.    Phebe writes from Jeff Cy that will be home first of next week.  

21.  Sunday.

22.  Monday. 5 AM.  Ther.  78.  98.  82.  =  86.

Part cloudy.  SW.3.  Emma worked AM for Tue.  Cleans up buggy in  part.  Think have felt the heat wave more today than at any time this season.  Part cloudy with thunder and sprinkle rain 4 P.M.  .01 in variable winds.  Lightning all round at night.  Tue over at night.  City is putting in meter on our waterline.  Sprinkle rain 3 P.M.

Note:  This is the last June entry.  Written on this page in pencil it says:  The Charleston Theater on Sixth St Burned December 13th between 9 and 10 oc P.M. 1914.  This record missing from June 12 1914 until May 1, 1915.  I have no idea what happened to the near year of Journal.  I will continue to post the 1889 entries.

27.  Monday.  5.30 AM.  Ther.  66.  82.  70.  =  72 2/3
Cloudy. S.1.  Miller calls but decides not to paint.  Fritz borrows spading fork.   Emma Warman helps  Tue wash.  Hitch up before noon Robert Hill reports record Morels in Anderson  orchard.  Light showers with thunder AM .30 in at 11 AM.  Call at Siberts and will get mare shod soon.  The Mexican war news is only moderate.  Hurta has agreed to accept mediation as offered by Brazil  Argentina and Chili preparations for war continue however.  Mrs. Curd over P.M.  I drive S. before 4 PM.  Went down on Kickapoo road, Continued S at school house and past Mt. Zion on Zacks.  Got home 6.30 P.M.  Buy onions of Dick Wright as I passed.  There has been much work done down that way in two weeks.  Saw no corn planting done.  The river seems pretty high.  They have been catching good many fish.  Kate Grove came over after supper, Morty later.  I found one morel today, the first for two or three years.  Part cloudy day gobed 8.30

28.  Tuesday.  5.30  AM.  Ther.  66.  78.  64.  =  69 1/3
Most cloudy and threatening.  Miller called but decides not to paint today, too damp.  Emma helping Tue. A.M.  H.G. calls to renew note due May 1. wants to go fishing.  Helen came in AM staying to dinner.  Tue got letter from Muggs P.M.  The last record biz is all cleared up.  I started out 11 AM to find some morels but struck big lot Copriness conatuss at Harrison  and 4th Sts. and took home to dinner.  I went  out again for morels  4 P.M. and came near good wetting in shower I tried to dodge SW of town.  I got home pretty damp at 5 P.M. Much cloudy day with many  light showers say .15 meas. at 6 P.M.  WE Hill says he got  "60" morels this morn.  Very threatening at sunset.  Rainbow 4.30 P.M. Go bed 9.30

Cloudy N.W. 3.  We slept late.  Tues stomach troubles her good deal time last night.  Wonder if the  C.comatus had anything to do with it.  This the coolest morn for a week or two.  I drove S.W. befor(sic) noon thinking to find morels: didn't see one.  I drove out by Lattas returning by Sam Walters.  The roads are good just moist.  They have been dragging them in many places.  Everybody getting ready to plant: didn't see any planted.  Tue  went up town PM and to church or elsewhere at night getting home 10.30  Mostly cloudy day with N.W. wind.  Gobed 9

cloudy N.E.2.  Sibert takes mare and shoes her first time since last fall.  Seeds from Harris came A.M.  Build good fire in furnace but was chilly all day.  Tue  cleaning in pantry A.M.  Hitch up after dinner and drive up to 2nd Bank to consult with Felix.  Get shave at Brown's.  WE Hill reports lots of morels yesterday.  I take rummage basket to Mrs. Shatsbergers late P.M.  Buy bu. corn and bale threshed timothy at Ryan;s 1.45  Tue and self both complaining with our stomach.  Think have been eating too much Mostly cloudy with moderate NE wind Clearing at night.  Gobed 9.30 P

The Weather &c for Apl. 1914 at Charleston, Ill.

Mean temperature 54.37.  Maximum 86 on 22d Minimum 22 on 9th clouds 51 +% Precipitation mostly rain on 11 days 2.52  the heaviest 1.26 on night of 6th Snow flying on the 8th  Ice about 3/4 on 8: 1/2 in on 9th:  1/5 on 10th:  1/8 on 30th  There has been much complaint of dry weather.  Grass has not grown much for past two weeks.  Farmers are getting well along with their work.  Oats were sown late but ate looking well.  Clover meadows much damage by freezing &c.  Wheat looks well.  There is prospect of good fruit crop.  Have seen no corn planted.  They retail corn at stores at 80 to 90 cts.  Hay about 20.00  they charge 60 cts for oats.  There have been many fish caught at river, bass &c.  Geo. Knocks says thing are more numerous than for 30.

Clear E.2.  near frost.  Very heavy dew.  Miller came 7 AM thinks too cold to paint before noon.  He has a partner who will assist him - Jake Myers, This ward  Alderman.  Hitch up 10.30 and take Tue to Dr. Fultons where R.C. has a function today.  Miller and Myers begin work 1 P.M. working till 5.  Tue got home 5 P.  Mrs. Harman phoned for Mrs. Shrieves wanting to see about wallpaper at farm.  They will be in tomorrow.  I drove round by Kickapoo and Wrightsville getting home 7 P.M. made pat mush.  Clear day.  light variable easterly winds  go bed 9.30.

21.  Tuesday.  6 AM. Ther.  36.  76.  62.  = 58.
Clear. S.3.  repair harness.  Hitch up and go up to vote.  City Election.  They vote only on alderman and City Court.  Miller here fixing ladders and talking of finishing job soon.  I saw Simmons up town.  Mr. Harry Bell died this morning.  Had been sick a long time.  I drove south of town returning by Wrightsville and cutoff.  Had to wait for steam boiler on Finch hill.  The roads are good.  Service blooming, also red bud sugar maple and some other trees.  Sally Campbell called on Tue.  Mrs. Grove was over while at night.  Mostly clear day strong southwind.  Go bed 8.30


22.  Wednesday.  6 AM.  Ther. 56.  86.  66.  =  69 1/3
Clear S.W.2.  Harman phones early and wants me to come out today if possible.  Miller went to work painting - first here since last Oct.  Gets 1 gal oil at Briggs.  I drove down to Buck Berts AM  but did not see him.  Helen came AM and was here to dinner.  Grace S. brought notice "Keep out" home.  Tue went to Mr. Bell's funeral 2 P.M.  The Mexican.   That war situation gets serious.  The first fighting occurred yesterday at Vera Cruz.  Tue gets letter from each Bud and Ph.  Make list seeds from Harris. Tue down to Hats P.M.  I went after her 5 P.M.  She and Hat  had gone to Carmichael's.  I did not find them.  Big show September Morn at Opera house at night.  Tue did not go but went to prayer meet.  There is a small frame building being erected back of opera house.  Part cloudy day with south to W winds.  Looks like rain.  go bed 10.  Miller paints on front porch.


23.  Thursday.  6 AM.  Ther.  54.  78.  66.  =  66.
Part cloudy E.2.  Miller came 7.  Miller working.  Hitch up 10 A.M.  Mare continues to act worse if anything.  Tue ironing AM.  Drive to Briggs and get gal. of porch paint.  Pay O.J. Ryan 85 cts. for corn bought Monday.  Miller paints all day on porch and south side.  He begins on porch floor we don't like the color of porch and will try to improve it on next coat.  Tue went up town P.M. mails letter for seeds.  Miller quit about 5 P.M.  Mare still vicious and came near getting my left hand while harnessing.  Late PM U drove down to consult Buck Best about her but he  was not at home.  Much cloudy today E. to southerly winds.  Mrs. Toops  calls late P.M.  There has not been much fighting in Mexico yet.  The situation is not encouraging.  Gob 9

Part cloudy. S.3.  Miller came about 7 and we fix up shade of color for  which suites it better.  Rain stops him 9.  Emmet came 9.30 A, set him to work mowing yard but  rain stops him.  P.O. authorities investing record sent us by Muggs 10th ist.  We have not received it.  Mrs. Grove calls AM Tue still ironing.  Emmett works till 5 AM. mowing yard &c. will come tomorrow.  Mrs. Reasor and Margurite called about noon.  They are down on visit from  Hindsboro.  Speak to Dr. Kincade about mare.  He says can't help her.  Tue went to R.C. P.M. at Chenowith's.   today last R.C. meet this season.  I buy peas at Crims - poor stuff.  Part cloudy and threatening.  Lightening night Sps several  Gob 9.30  R. .15 in

Partly clear.  Abbott works most of P.M. cleaning up stable.  Buy 3640 lbs. hay of Eley @  8.50.  Mrs. Rogers washed.  Quit smoking tobacco.  Cloudy toward night look like rain lightning N.E. rain with thunder about 11 P.M.  Trade fair  Paid Abbott 25 in full.  Go bed 11 P.M.




22.  Wednesday 6.45 AM.   Ther.  40.  60.  44.  = 48.
Part clear, brisk N.E. wind very chilly.  Start for timber 10 AM.  Milt hauling out lumber.  Will work out my tax and his over on roads next week.  John Handly has moved his (?) about a rod west.  I got home about 7 PM.  Mrs. Faegan helping Tue sew carpet which I bought this AM.  Clear day  Chilly day said to have been light frost this morn.  Gob 12.30

Cloudy strong S.E. winds.  Cloudy all day sprinkles rain several times.  heavy rain about dark and till in night much  lightning, wind S all day.  Trade  dull.  John Kink up with  tow loads of ties says there are but two more in woods.  Mrs.Rogers helping Tue make carpet.  Tue buys a rug of peddler.  Go bed  11 P.M.

Part cloudy Mrs. Rogers helping clean front room.  Self not feeling very well.  Dullest trade we have had.  Went down to  R.R. and  counted ties P.M. 229 out.  Kink says there are about  two more loads in woods.  Set out a few tomato plants at night.  Fellows singing and selling books on P. Becton  corner at night.  Order Blackberry Sherry and dry Catauibbor(?) of B.B.& U.  Go bed 11.30 PM.
