May 3 & 4, 1912 & May 4, 1887 in Charleston, Illinois

Apparently, yesterday I posted from April instead of May for the 1912 entry . . .  sorry!


100 Years Ago

Friday, May 3, 1912   6 AM  Ther. 62,84,70 =72  Mostly clear S.E. 2.  Emmett did not come but I get start for farm 8.30.  Take can paint out for Mrs. Binge.  Stop at Cliffs and he rides over place with me.  We visit Darling ditching west of house and settle in full to date 65 3/4 rods 19.70.  He owed me for corn 9.10 and hay 4.00 leaving bal 6.55 which give him check for.  Harmans men breaking clover sod, say to wet.  Few people along road working.  Ross Hampton & Co are preparing to put in cement bridge.  Stop and talk at Harmans and start  home at about noon.  I didn't visit Loxa.  Mrs. Grove over most of P.M.  Morty came for her 5.30.  I pay Nickles bill for horse in winter 2.50 1/23 to 2/17.  Pay Sol McCravy 7.50 for survey last Oct. 17th.  G.B. Davis Bill for CS sent to Harman 50.70.  I have not paid it.  Some cloudy with light S.E. winds.  Thunder E 3 and 4 P.M.  Go bed 10 P.M.

Saturday, May 4, 1912   5.30 AM.  Ther 64, 84, 70=72 2/3  Part cloudy S.1.  Emett (sic) came 7 hitches up and goes to mowing yard.  Mail check 50.70 to C.H. Jones Loxa for G.B. Davis C.S.  Emmett cut weeds a while having finished the yard and  went with me to Cemetery and fix up the lot.  We could do but little for want of tools.  Sow grass seed and cut briars and sprouts getting home 4 P.M.  Pay him up to date 1.20 ck.  Ellen ironing P.M.  Mrs. Eagleston called AM.  Tue gets letter from Buddy.  Tue called at  Jack Jefferies office P.M.  I slept on couch from supper till 10 P.M.  Mostly clear southerly moderate winds.  Lightening  W. at night.  Go bed 10 P.M.


125 Years Ago

Wednesday, May 4, 1887     6.30 A.M.  Ther. 53, 70, 60, cloudy early Dash of rain about 6 AM.  Pay Hulbing 40 cents for repairing buggy.  Went  with F. Knock down to Blakeman place after mushrooms, got a few.  Bought half gallon of Parker at night.  He got about half bushel again today says he finds them under sycamore trees mostly.  The crab apples and white storne (?) are in blossom.  White oak leaving out.  Roads a little muddy.  John Handley says he will sign petition to have road woverl (?).  Pay S.M. Wied & CO draft 312.34.  Some more berries arrived today from Sterrs Harrison Co.  Young says he will  set them out tomorrow.  Heavy rains at night with thunder.  11 P.M.
