April 18-20, 1914 and 1889 in Charleston, IL

April 1914

18.  Saturday.  6 AM.  Ther.  64 S3.  78 S.6.  66.S.5  =  69 1/3
Clear or  hazy S.3.  Tue cleaning  and sweeping our room by self.  I phone J.E.M. early getting 4 PM. same.  License expires at Mattoon May 7th  C.W. Bill leveling up N. opera house.  Children are running over us and I put up some notices to "Keepout" (sic). Tue brings big rug downstairs and takes it back.  Much cloudy P.M.  with fierce Southwind.  Self feeling unusually poorly.  I can't perceive but that I get worse all time.  Was barely able to hitch up this morn.  I went up to Brown's at Hotel getting sh &  hair cut first time for many weeks.  The Tampico incident is closed or will be soon as Huerta salutes flag which he may do soon.  Tue at request of Mrs. G. went over there for evening getting home 9 oc.  The city has passed a new water ordinance and expect large revenue from W. US. It will raise cost of our some.  Part cloudy day with great wind from S.W. lightning 8 P.M. and later after 9 to  11 P.M. light Thunder showers.  The wind continued the night but no rain after midnight. gobed 9 P


19.  Sunday.  6 AM.  Ther.  52.  56.  38.  =  48 2/3
Most cloudy.  W.5.  Seems to be growing colder.  Get fire in furnace 9 AM.  Tue goes church AM.  Had thought to drive good ways today but too cold A.M.  Ther. falls all P.M. with light rain say 5 P.M. only a trace.  Mort and Kate were here late P.M. until after 7 when Tue went to church  I decide not to hitch up - too cold and windy.  Mostly cloudy day and night.  Strong west and NW winds  Gobed 10 P.M.


20.  Monday. 6 AM.  Ther.  32.50.  40.  =  40 2/3
Mostly cloudy.  N.3.  Tue killed her while here.  She wrote Buddy AM.  Send Couriers to each of the girls.  Tue  went down to see Ollie P.M.  I hitch up  late P.M.  The mare more vicious than ever saw her : broke  bridle which I tie it up and drive out by cemetery and home by south road by 5.30.  Tue spent evening at Mrs. Brooks' getting home 9  Go bed. 9.30

18.  Thursday.  6.30. AM.  Ther.    64.  77.  68.  =  69 2/3
Part clear smoky.  Mostly clear day, clouds up and rains just a little at about sunset.  See Miss Kemayor says she can't find room to move into.  Davis Brown drummer in town, also other drummers very numerous.  Get everything ready to start for woods early tomorrow morning.  Buy a pair of shoes at Mitchell  on Cr. 5.50.  Tue not feeling very well.  Nor self.  Quit chewing tobacco yesterday smoking some.  Have short talk with H.G. about business.  Buy meat and some garden seeds at Mitchell's at night.  Gobed 10 P.M.


19.  Friday.  5.50 A.M.  Ther.  65.  68.  58.  =  63 2/3
Cloudy N.w. last night and both th and lightning in night rain about 7 AM.  Nice shower.  More rain during day and at night.  got letter from Mr. Hymen saying had sent us some samples.  Maggie did not go to school.  Hat was up in P.M.  I nailed strips on top of barnyard fence to keep chickens in.  One of Tue's hens died a day or two ago.  Mrs. Dickenson ironed today - took washing home.  Cloudy all day, wind from S. to west.  Tue feeling badly.  Gobed 10 PM. 


20.  Saturday. 6 AM.  Ther.  52.  68.  58.  =  59 1/3
Cloudy and damp, rained some in night.  Card from WH White saying would receive ties next  Tuesday.  Arrange to down to timber tomorrow.  Milt up town gave him two old chains and old stovepipe.  School election- somewhat exciting- elect Walter Briggs and TJ Murch.  Cleared off, pleasant day.  10 PM.
