Charles Gramesly's Journal was written from 1878 to 1925. I am his Great-granddaughter and I post entries from the journal from 114 and 125 years ago. The journal is about everyday living in Charleston & Coles County Illinois. It is not just about the Gramesly family, it is about the community, the region and the issues on all levels that touch their lives. Many people are mentioned in this journal. Join me as I explore history written by my Great-grandfather . . .

love seeing the pictures. is the first one of the house south of town. and the next picture near 6th street with boards going over town branch?
ReplyDeleteThe first picture is house that was located where the Elks Club later was built. That house was somewhat dismantled and from the entries it sounds like the frame might have been used for a barn. They built a new house at the front of the lot and the house in the picture was at the back of the lot and would have been a good place for a barn. You might read back in the 1887 entries. The vine on the side was a huge trumpeter vine.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct about the boards crossing the Town Branch. The picture says "looking North from the bridge crossing the Town Branch on Sixth Street."
