April 30, 1912 & 1887 in Charleston, Coles, Illinois

Tuesday, April 30, 1912  5.40 AM  Ther. 40, 62, 54 = 52
Clear N.2.. near frost.  Tue and E. washing bedding A.M.  I took clothes to Mrs. Warman 10 A.M. Head pretty hard time hitching alone.  Drove west of town and up by John B. Hill's.  Don't think things looking very well.  Pears have been in full bloom for several days.  Redbuds out full.  Apples coming out- some varieties.  Creeks are high.  I look for mushrooms on Stoddert find nothing.  Got  home about noon.  Jack* got left.  The roads are quite muddy both dirt and gravel.  Ellen is over to Loxa on 2 P.M. returning on 7.  I get wisp of hay J.D's and order bale for the morrow.  Tue over at Groves at night til 10.  Ellen retired early and I lay on couch..  A dose of castoria taken last night made me uncomfortable all day.  I met Harman driving N. at Monroe & 7th.  He did not stop.  I think Mrs. Grove is better.  Gobed 10.30 P.

The Weather for April 1912
Mean daily temperature for Apl 1912= 55.14 Max 78, on 12th. Min. 30 on 3rd.  Precipitation 5.22 in. on days.  Heavier rains were on 1, 2nd, 6th, 12th, 17th, 25th, 26th, 28th and 29th.  Other days light or only trace.  Snow flying 7th & 18th.  No violent thunder or wind storms.  Clouds 45 1/2%. thin ice formed in open vessel 3rd and 19.  The roads dry up early in month and have been fair until late rain.  Farmers have hardly finished sowing oats and breaking for corn not extensive.  Gardens are way behind.  Corn sell at 85cts. at stores oats 65.  Chicago prices are say Corn 8(?) Oats .58.  Clover seed here 13.00 to 15.00 per bu.  Have sown about 60 acres.  Hogs Chicago say 8.00  Prevailing winds for Apl. N.4.  NE2. E 1 1/3, SE2, S 9. SW 5 2/3, W3. and NE and NW 3 days.  Have seen no fungi except some small morels  Bill Hill had.  Have not been to farm for over week.  Think Harman has bout 20 acres broken.  There are no peach blooms  Plums and Cherries Pears and Apples full.  Many peach trees intirely (sic) killed.

125 Years Ago

Saturday, April 30, 1887    7 A.M.  Ther.  55, 70, 63  Hazy, wind S.  Mr. Young began before 7 was up finished ditch and fixed platform at front gate and quit about 9 AM. having worked 4 1/4 days full time this week.  Maggie and Phebe went up to Davis' to make "May basket".  Delia goes home after dinner to stay til Sunday night.  Went with F.M. Parker down to Kickapoo. He thought he could catch some first but didn't.  Pleasant day S. wind.  Roads dry but pretty rough.  Crab apples ready to bloom.  Go bed 11 P.M.  Tue very sore throat.
