Marie's Broken Leg 1892 - 1893

Dear Readers it has been a difficult year to keep the Journal going.  I am back reading and sharing and hope to bring Charles' history back into your weekly reads.  Here are a few entries I did not want missed.

November 1892

19.  Saturday, 7AM.  Ther  26.  36.  27.
Clear, N.N.W. wind strong.  Measure Maggie for a new truss.  The other one is too small.  Sold old lumber at store for 4.50  Uncle John was down to dinner.  After dinner father fell down stairs on Marie who was following him up hurting himself some and her pretty badly.  Feared her leg was broken but Dr. Starr says not.    Mrs. Latta was over P.M.  Stella's folks are going to move Monday and she thinks she will have to leave us.  Clear day NW wind very few people in for Saturday.  trade dull.  go bed 11 P.M. 
 [My Grandmother Marie said they were coming up the cellar stairs.]

20.  Sunday,  7 AM.  Ther  27.  50.  50.
Mostly clear.  Strong SSE wind.  Intended to go to Ranch but thought too cold.  Father and Marie both feeling badly from the effects of their fall.  Marie got her leg hurt again today   Mrs. Latta, Eastin and Mary Davis were over toward night.  Windy day S.E. to W.  Mostly clear till night  clouds over becoming quite warm  Gobed 9 P.M.

22.  Tuesday,  6 A.M.  Ther.  20.  38.  29.
Clear.  N.E.  wind  Jo Kline was buried today 2.30 P.M.  Marie fell on her broken leg this morn early and it made her sick all day.  Johnny brought up 64 posts  Warren with two teams brought in 82   They are making them too small  Maggie and Phebe went to show show at night.  We brought small bed stairs tonight and Tue slept there with Marie   I slept upstairs  Hat was down P.M.  Mr. Sledtimer (?) clover leaf engineer has moved into the Eastin House. . . .

23.  Wednesday,  6.30 A.M.  ther.14,  25,  18.
Clear brought up 55 posts not up to the mark in sign.  Mary Decker comes to sew for Tue getting here before breakfast,  Marie slept well and feels better today.  Father feeling very bad from his fall Saturday.  Clear cool day with northerly wind Meteoric shower at night.  gobed at midnight sleeping alone in east room upstairs.

24.  Thursday, 6 AM.  Ther  10  35  18
Clear. W. wind  Thanksgiving day.  Most of stores close from 11 AM till 2 P.M.  Kill one of the youngest ducks but didn't  get it picked in time for dinner.  Maggie and Phebe ate dinner at Davis'  Johnny brought up 60 posts and  chut 47.  Have on hand now 628.  Hat was down toward night.   Mrs. Eastin was over  Father feeling some better today.  Trade very light.  Some cloudy day with light variable wind settling into  southeast.  gobed 12.30

25.  Friday  . . . Marie feels pretty well but still keeps her bed.

26.  Saturday . . .  Maggie went to a party at Ote Davis' at night.  Marie still refuses to use her foot.

27.  Sunday . . .  Marie got off her bed and hurt her leg again about noon.

28.  Monday . . . Dr. Starr put splint on Marie's leg.

December 1893


1. Thursday . . .  Marie still keeps her bed but think she is improving.

7.  Wednesday . . . Marie has not tried to use her broken leg any yet.  .. . . . make a stay for Marie's leg at night sitting up until 1 oc 
 [My Grandmother told me her Dad made her a little crutch.  Perhaps the "stay"refers to that crutch.]

17.  Saturday . . . Marie is beginning to stand a little on her rightfoot [sic], her leg was fractured 4 weeks ago today.  She took several trips in the baby carriage today.  Tue went to Mrs Perrill P.M. taking Marie in baby wagon.  Mostly cloudy day.

18.  Sunday . . . Marie improves slowly in walking on her broken leg.

September 3 -4, 1892 and 1903.

September 1892

3.  Saturday, 6 AM.  Ther  55.  84.  68.
Mostly clear southerly wind.  Self and girls got breakfast  Mrs. Norfolk paid me for 9 cords wood 27.00  Warren hauling 4 cord's to Albert Anderson.  Chut Bennett finished Fluhartys Received 80.15 from W. H. White for ties and culls  Uncle John was down to dinner  Warmer day clouds and more signs of rain than lately  Get some hay of Uncle John which Oliver Frisbie will deliver next week.  Trade only moderate.  The dust is immense.  Tue finished her first lot of plums today.  occulation [sic] of Mars and Moon to night go bed  11 P.M. ~

4.  Sunday,  6.30  AM.  Ther 64.  84.  55
Some clouds wind southerly  Intended to start for timber early but as hot and dusty postpone till towards night.  Sign of rain all day, sprinkle a little at 4 PM  Go to ranch about 6 P.M.  JW and wife had been over the river just got home. Began raining about 7 AM and rained lightly about 2 or 3 hours.  Gobed 9 PM

September 1903

3.  Thursday.  6.30 AM,  Ther  55.  85.
Clear calm.  Mrs. Owens ironed.  Drive up and tell "Mercantile" Smith that will keep buggy.  Get bu of corn at Griffins for which I owe him 55c.  Have talk with A Richter about coal.    He will report price Hillsborough in day or two.  Tighten up wheels on new buggy.  Putting on washers.  Kellogg did not show up this morning.  They are putting a new metal roof on the Theater.  The old house is to be sold Oct. 1.  People are at work decorating the Public Square for the Street Fair which will begin Sep 14.  Nest Monday there will be great Labor day celebration Mattoon and Charleston combined.  Buy buggy jack at Mercantile Cr 50c.  Look at timothy seed.  I.B. Mitchell's.  It will cost me 2.00 per bu for the best.  take Maggie for for drive about 3 PM getting back 6 P.M.  Went down by Woodson place and across and across River.  No incident.  No mushrooms.  Today is Maggie's birthday. 25.  At night drove around town alone a while with new buggy.  Helen here at night first time in good while  Heard that N.M. got in Calabrasi today.  Clear day Southeasterly wind 2  Gobed 10 PM~

4.  Friday.  5.30 AM.  Ther. 60.  84.  71.  =  71 2/3
about clear southerly wind 1.  I drove out to Gaines AM getting home 1 P.M.  New buggy.  Old mare very clumsy.  Old Sorrel better and Sam Owens began plowing with him today.  think they will finish this evening.  Jo is out of old corn and is feeding new.  Will begin harrowing down piece tomorrow - may bring me load of hay (baled) and take out timothy seed.  Roads dry and smooth  New buggy all right but springs too stiff.  Geo. Kellogg says will saw eaves off shed for me in morn.  Drove down to Hen's.  He talked somewhat abusive and I left.  Edith Bates there.  After supper drove round with Tue. E and south.  Mostly clear day, light variable wind.  Jim Pugh will fix old buggy Monday.  Gobed 10.30 P.M.

16.  Tuesday.  6 AM Ther 63.  87.  68.
Clear wind N.E.  Tue has been thinking some of buying or renting Mrs. Eastin place.  Mrs. R.  washed this morning.  Settle in full with Warren Decker.  Chut Bennett bought load of 61 posts.    Sell Burgner two  94 posts.  Clear Day with NE wind  gobed  1030

August 1903

16.  Sunday,  6 AM. Ther. 64.  79.  68.  =  70 1/3
Clear N.E. wind 2.  I hunt up Pugh and he gets me plows from shop for which I owe him 50cts.  I drove down to Woodson place and around by Wrightsville.  Find nice lot of  A abreption on Stoddert land.  Arriving home to dinner.  All sorts of fungi- are growing, some A Cuepestries in front yard.  After dinner toward night Drove with Nick to Dice Woods where we gather the finest lot of A abrupties  I ever saw.  We quit because we could not bring them home.  I give Bacon a mes and put some in my ketchup jar,  He thinks he will have to set his house back about  20 feet on account of street in front.  Montz and Kate over at a/c water melon.  Mostly clear - some cumuli-  with northerly wind self not feeling pretty well.  Gobed, 9.30 P.M.

August 15, 1892 and 1903 in Coles County Illinois

August 1892

15.  Monday 6 AM.  ther  63,  87,  69
Clear NE wind.  Drove with Tue and Marie out to Emmett Glasco place  getting a basket of  large lepiota,  L. Morgani Poison same as I thought made me sick several weeks ago.    Try some for dinner and no bad effects.  Father also ate more than self with no unpleasant effect  To day has been rather warm  The last lots of cecropias are spinning    Nine of the lots began Sat.  Trade rather quiet for Monday, clouds up toward night with some signs of rain but clear off.  Wind N.E.  Maggie spent night with Maunie Lang.  Gobed 1030

August 1903

15.  Saturday 6:40 AM.  Ther  62.  77.  66.  =  68 1/3
Mostly cloudy. E. wind.  Over slept ourselves this A..M.  Drive up to timber getting fine mess of  A. abruplus.  Gave some to Bill Hill some to Nick   Jack Colby thinks Bill Decker will get money of home party to buy my land next week.  Saw Bill and he seems hopeful.  Very heavy thunder shower and rain 1 PM till 3 P.M.  I slept through most of it and did not get up town to get plows  left at Pugho for sharpen.   It cleared off toward night.  Jo Walton pays 50.00 rent up to Sept 10 check.  Drove with Tue around town awhile after dark.  Gobed  11.30 P.M.     [shorthand]

At the side of page:  Tue got card from Maggie  Says she and Hannah will go to Geneva Sunday.  They were at Niagara on Friday.

14.  Sunday, 6.30 AM.   Ther  59.  82.  65
Clear  N.E. wind.  Start for ranch 10.30 with old Kit.  Get there 2 P.M.  Nobody at home  Johnny and wife went up to John Simmons yesterday  I rode over to south side and to clover field  Clover not nearly ripe enough to cut for seed.  Fungi of all kinds very scarce.  Think it has been too warm The crops are looking as well as can be expected  Get home 8 oclock  The river is too high yet to ford.   Gobed  10 P.M.~~

August 1903

14.  Friday, 6 AM.   Ther,   58.79. 66.  = 67 2/3
Clear easterly wind 2.  Went up town before breakfast getting Pesto  Tue not feeling very well.  C. Talbott calls AM tying team in lot.  He got hurt a day or two ago.  Says D. Anderson has sold pony for 85.00  I decide to start to Loxa after dinner.  Get shoes at Gray's.  Start Gaines 2.00 P.M.  Jo out in cornfield cutting weeds.  Mrs. G still talking of their leaving in the fall.  She and Nell Owens went to Mattoon AM.  I took Mrs. G   out another setting of  Wyandotte eggs.   Drove down to Loxa Clarence and I investigate straw stack and I leave to him to half the good straw dividing it himself.  Tell him will charge 1.00 per mo for use of shed.  I took down two plow shares to get sharpened but McChevon closed.  the rain was general although heavy did not wash much.  Mostly clear day with easterly wind.  Roads somewhat muddy in spots.  Jack went but didnt return with me  Home 7 PM go bed 9 P,M__

24. Sunday, 6,30 AM.  Ther.  80.  98.  80.
Clear, wind Southerly, A duplicate of yesterday.  Self felt some better but don't move around much.  A shade cooler at night and more wind than yesterday.   go bed 9 P.M.

July 1903

24.  Friday 5.30 AM.  Ther.  60.  90.  70.  =  73 1/3
Clear.  I went up town before breakfast.  Jim Pugh takes up mare to shoe front and back & brought her home owe him for it.  I start to Loxa 10 AM get home before dinner which ate.  They are putting up hay and have what they call a two ton at north end.  Reatha's ear is all right since morning  I had cramps most of the P.M. and lay  on floor till about 4 PM  Downeys girls over and with Gaines'  pick berries much of P.M.  I went over to seed plot but too hot to do anything.  All corn is doing is looking well.  I got home 7 P.M.  Mostly clear and very warm day  Talbott will cut 5 A piece next Monday unless I sell it on ground.  The gang will stack tomorrow on north pierce  Gobed 830 PM

July 1892

22.  Friday.  5.30 AM.  Ther.  75 92. 76.
Cloudy southwind, Mary Davis stayed all night last night with Maggie.  Get 25 sacks of McCarty and start for ranch getting there before  noon.  Riley cutting sprouts.  John helping somebody thresh.  I look round in Bennett Hollow for fungi a white and start home at 5.30 used up with  the heat.  Went to bed without going to store too tired to sleep.  9.30

23.  Saturday 6 AM ~ ther.  78. 98. 82.
Clear S. wind, Lay round house all day.  Hottest day for several years.  Clear and blazing hot all day.  Can't stand this kind of weather  Gobed 9 PM  Uncle John were in to dinner.  Settle with E Fritz 1 day too much.

July 1903

22.  Wednesday.  5.40 AM.  Ther.  59, 83 72 = 71 1/3
 Clear northerly wind.   I notify E light people that dont want them to put up pole in front.  They refer me to whom I didn't see.  Talk with Charley  Ricketts about it at Post Office  Start to Loxa 9 AM.  Talbott finished cutting oats at noon  I went down to see Gilbert about hay  He offers me 30.00 for north piece, and I decide to cut and put up whole thing.    Talbott will begin in morning on north piece.  Retha still sick with earache  Jo and May took her to Charleston early this morning.  I took Jo over to his hedge cutting and start home about 2 P.M. didn't eat any dinner.  Gobed 9 P.M.  It didn't rain at Loxa last night.

23.  Thursday 5.30 A.M.  Ther  56.  84.  70= 70
Clear N. 1.  Talk with Colby at office before starting to  Loxa get to  Gaines noon and eat dinner.  Talbott cutting north hay Harry and Sam Owens helping also Jo.  Downey and Talbott kids there while P.M.  Reatha still crying with her ears.  Talbott and I drove whole meadow and I decide to sell it if I can at 8.00 and pitch it on the wagon.  I went up with him on his way home  to Morris Bungnens and beyond, and  got home at 7 P.M.  I was up town a while at night.  Clear day with light northerly wind   Blackberries are very plentiful and selling at 20 cts per gallon
